Did Not Start System

Mar 24, 2009

when I put vista on sleep, it goes dark, then restarts without sleeping. did not start doing this until yesterday, no probs with it before. I have not changed anything or added anything previous to this non-sleep issue. btw took cds out of the drives and that changed nothing, nor did it cause the prob before.

Cannot Start Because I Messed Around With System Files

Mar 22, 2009

I did something stupid with my system, and I really want to get it fixed basically I followed this instruction to install the new theme files.

'VistaOSX '09 Uninstall by =patrickgs on deviantART'

I restarted my system after the 3rd step
now my system is missing
authui.dll
browseui.dll
imageres.dll
shsvcs.dll
themeui.dll
uxtheme.dll

the files still exist in my system32 folder, just under a backup filename now whenever i start my system (i tried safe mood and command prompt),it will always end up in a black screen with my white mouse pointer.I can go into the system recovery options fine, but there no system restore points exists.

After having my computer crashing - for whatever reason - i took it in to have all important documents (work stuff) that i needed transfered to an external hard drive.

I was informed to re install Vista, and that all my information will be lost.

When i did this, i did not reformat the drive, so it saved all the other stuff in a folder titlled windows.old.

I respoke to the person who assisted me, and told him of the issue that i am having which is:

Windows Failed To Start, System Restore

Dec 29, 2008

My laptop (Advent 8117 running Vista if that helps) has been working fine, then this morning things went pear-shaped. To begin with things worked as usual - Everything seemed to load up as normal, I left the room for maybe 5-10 minutes and when I returned there was a black screen. I waited a while and nothing happened so I restarted. It comes up with 'Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.' From there I can either start normally or run a repair. It doesn't seem to matter what I click here because I get a 'Techguys' support thing come up either way but now nothing on it works. To begin with I ran the Repair Environment, but it couldn't fix it. I also got to try a System Restore but I seem to have no points to restore to. Now I can't get the Techguys page to do anything. So I tried running in Safe Mode but once again I'm faced with the unmoving Techguys page, and the same goes for when I try and load from the Last Know Good Configuration. I desperatly don't want to have to lose everything.

System Not Start: Backup Of Non-boot Drive

Apr 9, 2008

I have a Vista Home Premium system that will not start. It gets as far as the system bootup progress bar, tries to start then suddenly the system shuts down. I have tried every possible recovery/repair technique I could find and still no luck. The system is using a Intel motherboard with Matrix Storage RAID which I have configured as RAID 1. In the repair console (from Vista DVD) I can read the drive from a prompt window so I assume the data is safe. I would like to back up the user data (photos, docs, email) and do a reinstall without the RAID 1 configuration. I have heard there are problems with Vista and the Matrix Storage controller.

Question is: How would I go about backing up a non-bootable Vista drive? I have another system running XP pro that I could mount the Vista drive to and copy the data to a portable USB drive. Is this a possibility? Will I run into any "access denied" issues when saving the data off to a backup drive? Also, the system was using Outlook 03 for email. What is the best way to recover the Outlook email data (messages, addresses, etc.) from a non-bootable disk? Is this email data in the same location as it is with XP?

Switch To System Tough Can Not Start Vista

Aug 29, 2009

The switch to Vista has been tough for me. Lost my computer when I was doing an online college test and a storm came up. Our well pump got hit and fried my XP. I MISS my XP! It's been a real hassle trying to get things to work with Vista. Which leads me to my current dilemma...I don't know if my computer caught a bug - Kaspersky and TrendMicro Housecall don't find anything - or what, but for some reason, I lost the Windows Installer. Finally got that back, but I then "lost" my Office 2000 Pro program.

All the icons for all those files were the "generic" icons. I uninstalled Office, then reinstalled it. It seemed like things were working until I went to open my Goodsol Solitaire program. The Office installer opened and said the program was not installed and did I want to install it now? It then automatically went into the install mode. But, it would do that, then start all over.

So, I uninstalled it, then reinstalled it again. Same thing. Also, now when I want to open a Word doc, it does the same thing. When I did the install, I told the program to install all to run from my computer. I also went to open my Picture Viewer this morning and the same thing came up - Office is not installed...What can I do?

System Start Loading Problem Occurs

Apr 14, 2010

Regularly when I launch my computer, the fans start working loudly, and I hear a few "beeps", and the white font appears on the screen. Then, after a few seconds, I hear 2 more beeps or so, the fans go back to to normal and the system starts loading. When the problem "occurs", I only hear those first beeps and the loud fan work, the screen shows nothing (it writes "No signal"), and the fans continue spinning loudly. To stop this I need to shut the system down with a button. But wait, if I launch the PC again, this all repeats! SO I usually turn the overall power supply off (0/I), and wait fr about an hour. This happens from time to time, as I've said. About once - twice a month.

Now what I think, is that this is BIOS, since my computer doesn't even load this one. I'm pretty sure that this isn't normal... Anyway, turning my PC off with a button harms my Hard Drive ^^ Do you know how to stop this? Please that would be great I tried to provide you with all the information I had, though I could forget something..

Start Up Repair Restore System Update

May 15, 2010

A while ago on my desktop Vista I was installing some updates. After I restarted the computer, it went straight to startup repair. I used system restore to restore to a point before I installed the updates. My computer worked fine. Thinking it hadn't been the updates that had caused the problem, I updated again but with the same results. This has also happned on other computers of mine. Ever since then, I have never installed a single update. I am wondering if this is a good idea or not.

Start Menu Add-on: Start++

May 15, 2007

Every Windows power user knows the command line is “the place” to get serious work done.  The new Start Menu search box in Windows Vista opens the door to a whole new level of command line possibilities.  One utility called Start++ extends the Start Menu search box to add even more features allowing you to use shortcuts to launch web sites and processes.

Would you like to search Google from your start menu search box? Just type g followed by your query such as “g tweak vista”. How about doing a quick search on Wikipedia? Type w and your query in the search box.  The possibilities are endless because you can create custom shortcuts just like the examples above.

On top of web shortcuts, you can also create application links that will launch an app and open a file.  Almost anything is possible with a little customization of the Start++ utility shown below....

System Optimizer Registry Cleaner Reeked Havok System

Feb 17, 2009

I have several utility software programs. I am afraid to use any of them. I am using Vista home premium 64 bit. I bought this computer back in april. after I bought it I purchased a new program called Advanced System Optimizer. When I google for information on a quality utility program this program had very high recommendations. I also have Fit-It utilities 7 and an older version of System Mechanic. My computer is running slower now and I know it needs cleaning up. The last time months ago right after I purchase Advance System Optimizer I ran the registry cleaner and it reeked havok on my system. I called the company and they told me their program I purchased was not designed for 64bit systems. Of course they didn't refund my money. Question is: My computer needs cleaning up I can tell it is running slower than it used to. What utility program is out there that will work on my system. My system is Vista Home Premium 64 bit Intel core 2 Duo 2.6 GHZ.

Anti Virus System Pro And Can't Get System Restore To Work

Tried putting the Windows XP disk in to do a repair and was unable to get it to start. I think the only thing to do is reformat the HD and start over but her PC ignores the A drive and the dvd drives. I cannot get into it in order to re format it.

Black Screen: System Crash And Rebooted System

Mar 30, 2008

I have a problem currently with Windows Vista Ultimate(Integrale), this occurred last Friday evening. I was finishing off a word document when suddenly all went black. As an end user I assumed this was a system crash and so rebooted my system, then ran registry repair, then checked for viruses etc with Live OneCare, eventually reloaded Vista all to no avail. Each time I rebooted I was greeted by a black screen after logging in.

I called my tech support who could not help but I did manage to gain access to the internet and after a short while found an item entitled Black Screen Death. This reported that all my problems where due to Microsoft thinking I had a non genuine copy of Vista it went on to explain how you could circum-navigate the problem (this I did and even though I have to repeat this process each time I log on I can use Windows normally). I purchased my copy of Vista Ulitimate from a large chain store at the not give away price of over 400 Euros and registered the same online on the day of installation and have been running for sometime with other Microsoft products including Live OneCare. Why then am I suddenly crippled for an entire weekend by Microsoft security and how can I rectify the situation perminently

System Restore Shadow Copies: System Error

Apr 25, 2008

I am trying to get rid of system restore shadow copies on my Vista home premium. I keep getting system error when I try to reduce the room used on my C drive as I only have 28gb of 145gb left. I have tried typing in:vssadmin list shadowstorage For the above command to run you must use elevated privileges:

1.. Click on the Start menu then click All Programs / Accessories
2.. Right Click on the Command Prompt option and from the drop down menu click on the Run as Administrator option
3.. At the command prompt type vssadmin list shadowstorage and Press Enter
(NOTE: if the command does not run change directories to c:windowssystem32) After the vssadmin has executed you will see results similar to the following:.....

The output above shows space used on the C: drive by System Restore is 237.419 MB. The maximum space allocated for System restore is 2.092 GB To view the number of restore points you currently have on your Computer run the following command vssadmin list shadows Next, to reduce the allocated space used by Vista's System Restore, use the following command: vssadmin resize shadowstorage /on=[OnVolumeSpec:] /for=[ForVolumeSpec:] /maxsize=[MaxSizeSpec] Where example: vssadmin resize shadowstorage /On=C: /For=C: /Maxsize=1GB When decreasing the space allocated to System Restore, you will loose the earlier system restore points. The advantage is gaining extra free space. If you are concerned with losing the previous restore points, wait until you do not need them anymore before reducing the allocated space. If you plan on upgrading to Windows Vista or running a clean install and will need extra space, consider reducing the space after installation has completed. It is not recommended to disable System Restore. The capability to restore to a previous point in time or having the new Shadow Copy feature available can be a time saver if something goes wrong or if you delete a file. source: John Barnett Windows Vista Support I keep getting an error message. I seem to remember doing this before with my XP but can't remember how. Is there an easier way?

How To Increase System System Performance

Jun 10, 2009

I thought I would share this with you all, a few little tricks to boost Windows performance. If you have a spare USB flash drive or you are willing to get a cheap say 1GB flash drive. First we plug in the flash drive. Go to Disk Manager and assign it a drive letter, like Z: (this is just to get it out of the way and optional). Go to Advanced system settings, Evironment variables. Change the Temp variable under User to Z: (I didn't see any point creating folders, but that's optional). Change the Temp variable under System variable to Z:

This will cut down on I/O traffic to the hard drive. Starting an app like Word, would cause the HD to read the program into memory while at the same time writing into the drive, temporary files. This causes an I/O queue to form and degrade Windows performance. By off loading some of the I/O traffic to another storage device, the hard drive read/write head doesn't have to move around as much either. All performance gains.

Another trick I tried was moving Windows Search Index to a flash drive, but it won't let me select even a 16GB flash drive. Even though the Index doesn't grow beyond 1GB. It's max size seems to be just under 1GB. You can move to it to a removable drive, though. I rebuilt the Index on an external 500GB USB drive. Again, this cuts down I/O traffic to the internal hard drive..........

System Restore / System Checkpoint

May 11, 2008

I remember with WinXP that if I had my computer turned on and was not using it for a certain length of time (maybe 30 minutes), it would 'automatically' create a 'System Checkpoint' in the System Restore area. I could also 'manually' create a 'System Checkpoint.' What I would like to know is - doees Vista (Home Premium) create such an 'automatic' System Checkpoint if I have notebook turned on, but don't use if for about 30 minutes?

(I believe there is a way to turn on an Automatic 'System Checkpoint' that you can schedule to be done at a certain time. That is not what I am talking about. I am talking about an 'automatic' System Checkpoint' that is done if the computer is turned on, but not used for 30 minutes or more (approximately).

No Operating System On System Recovery

I recently have managed to gain a corrupt file on my computer this basically means my computer does not startup. I have a boot disk available for my system (Windows vista x64 ultimate). However when it comes to trying to select a operating system
in the system recovery options the box is blank and i have no operating system to select. I have a feeling the fact i have sata raid setup on my computer is the reason as to why i cannot see my C: drive. I know this will fix my computer if i can only locate an operating system to detect. I have already carried out all the usual suspects of what is wrong like system restore etc but i cannot find a hard drive to restore.

After that, the computer would not load up the opening page with the user accounts and stuff. All it showed was a black screen with a mouse (which i could move). Even more surprising is that the recovery hard drive won't boot up either and the recovery disks don't work either. I tried system restore and it told me that there were no recovery points made.
