recently however i have just built my first pc and obvioulsy dont want to do anything that may cause issues with my system, what im wondering is what exactly am i getting rid of when i delete the registery. will it get rid of game patches that i want to keep etc. or can i clear it all with no problems.
I was installing a 3rd party software called "ccleaner" and the install went good. Then it asked if I want to reboot now or do it later..I chose to reboot now. The computer started to reboot! When it came up the screen to press f2 for setup, esc for boot menu, etc. it hung! I waited about 5 minutes and still no go!
I decided to power it down and have it restarted..that is when the problem started!
It got hung on the same black screen as I mentioned above. I press the esc key and it took about 5 minutes before any action. Did the same with the f2 key..again about 5 minutes before any action. Both the boot and setup looks ok and I tried to reboot again..nothing! Went in to change boot sequence to the CD. The boot took to the CD, but it not do nothing after it mentioned that do I want to reinstall windows, etc.
Closed that out and went to the C prompt..NO C drive!! Powered it down and when it tried to reboot it came up something like..cable is not connected or there is no fixed drives! I can not get either fdisk or format to work!
This computer is my wife's laptop and she has some important files on there and she does not have a backup!!

I was wondering why Vista Forums, suggests not to install CCleaner? It is in your Speed Up Vista Tutorial. Is their a reason for this?
View 9 Replies View RelatedMy wife was on the internet and suddenly System Pro popped up and started scanning warning my wife of a virus attack on her computer and wanted her to buy the AV Pgm for $49.95. She just clicked all the exits and got off of the internet and now she is locked out of her computer. We can't get system restore to work, Can't get safe mode to work, She has AVG 8 installed but cannot start it. Tried SFC /scannow but was denied access. Tried putting the Windows XP disk in to do a repair and was unable to get it to start. I think the only thing to do is reformat the HD and start over but her PC ignores the A drive and the dvd drives. I cannot get into it in order to re format it.

I have that file system on that for some reason so I don’t need to upgrade on that….but recently I had some files deleted and now I need to get them back. They are important for my official use and hold great importance. I know that there is software for recovery but since I have a FAT16 file system I guess that all won’t work on that.

I have the latest version of CCleaner Version v2.19.900. When ever i do clean the registry with the application its hang after 21 % . But when I clean the cookies its cleaning with no issue. i never had this issue in the office system which Windows XP.
Has anyone used CCleaner with 64 bit Vista? What has your experience been? The reveiws seem to be mixed. Vista is new to me and I'm trying to set up a new machine with the utilities I need before loading any software.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a corrupted system on my boot drive (C) I do not wish to format this large drive and start over. I am wondering if I copy the registry to an external drive, install and format a new system drive, and then copy the saved registry and my programs from the old C drive (The drive is okay, it simply has some bad system files on it) to the new C drive would this work?? I would save the registry from the new drive before copying the old one over in case this does not work. I ask this as a way to get around reinstalling all my software from CD's again or many which are not on CD's but are downloaded from the internet....

View 5 Replies View RelatedMy OS is Vista Home Premium 64 bit. On a couple of occasions I've tried to action "System Restore". So far I've met with NO success. It seems to go through the motions OK ( if you believe what you see on the moniter) but when the comp restarts I am bluntly informed that restoration has NOT taken place. Doesn't seem a lot of point having a facility like this when it simply will NOT work! Is this some sort of glitch with Vista 64 bit?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI came home only to find out that I get a blue screen on startup. But my definition of "startup" is different I think, I get the bluescreen the second I am logged into windows and the hear the "Be-bo-be-bop". I don't think this isn't your usual bsod case because I don't get any kind of error code, perhaps it's my monitor's way of saying it isn't getting a signal. And I'm really scared it's a problem with my video card. Right now I have an HD 4890 but I bought it 3-4 months ago after my 4870 "died". Back then when I turned the pc on the fans would blare at high speeds and I would be left with a blue screen. And since the card lasted a good 7 months I didn't pursue it and just bought a new one. Anyways today I tried a couple things but got thwarted. I wanted to uninstall my video driver in case it really is a driver problem and reinstall an update, but apparently you can't uninstall display drivers in safe mode. System restore also didn't work in safe mode. I also tried "enable low resolution video" and "Last known good configuration" from advanced boot options (F8). And lastly I tried to do a startup repair from my installation disc and to great surprise the menu didn't even appear, just the vista background and a movable cursor. So as you can see i've had horrible luck .This has to be some kind of driver/video card issue, no? My pc is a power house, it's specs are really high so I really don't know what to think. I'm also a newb to this.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have Vista Home Basic. A few weeks ago I updated to IE 8, as my updates recommended it as an important update. Since that day I have not been able to use IE 8. The page doesn't even load all the way, and I get the message that DEP has shut down IE 8, and then I can't access it to try to fix anything. One time I was able to follow the link to the DEP info, and there is no option to shut it off. It is very frustrating to have your system tell you to upgrade and then have it not work. This is not the first problem I've had with Vista and IE. The last time I loaded another browser, and I'm glad I left it loaded or I wouldn't be able to use my computer at all. My computer wasn't even able to go back to a previous restore point. Microsoft, Vista, and IE 8 need to be more user friendly, not all people who rely on computers are computer heads. It would take me ages to figure out to fix the problem even with directions and helpful links. Recommended upgrades should work without having to jump through all kinds of hoops to get them to work.

Other (factory) stuff is: Emachines MCP61PM-GM Motherboard.....I hope it does cause I've already ordered an XFX HD477AYDFC Radeon HD 4770 Video Card - 512MB DDR5, PCI Express 2.0, along with a Diablotek DA Series 500w ATX Power Supply (D15-1205). Will these new (in transit from tiger direct) items get along well with my system? I'm not expecting miracles, but I am expecting large improvements.

Vista is still virgin and not other programs are installed, so changing it location from D to C drive will not influance any applications. I know how to create hard drive image. My question is how to make that new c drive with Vista on it bootable again.

After the restore everything worked fine except that Mc Afee Security would no longer function, with the exception of the Firewall. Mc Afee indicated that the secuerity center was more than 30 days out of date. My system restore was set for less than 24 hours. Is this a normal situation and is there any way to prevent it in the future?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI used a program (Flashget) to download a wmv tutorial onto my desktop. When files like these are downloading they have two icons, the actual file icon and a white 'in process' file which disappears when the actual file has finished. For some reason in this case the white icon remained (believe the file download failed to activate) I have tried many things and nothing deletes it. The file has no bytes and Windows tells me "This is no longer located in C:UsersMeDesktop. Verify the item’s location and try again."
I have tried refreshing the desktop, rebooting, using various system registry cleaners, used Move on Boot, MalwareBytes, R Wipe and Clean, Wise Disk Cleaner, Unlocker etc etc. I have also tried renaming the file (not found), renaming another file with the same name and popping it onto the desktop (this doesn't work because its called "filename.wmv." and the period/full stop at the end keeps getting corrected when I try to change another file to the same name). Actually I have now managed to rename an icon with the same name and Vista allows both of them to exist at the same time. I've therefafter retried deleting and renaming the troublesome file all these options have failed.
System would only boot up in safe mode, now there is a "unmountable boot volume" 0x000000ED. I just want the pictures off that drive. how should I get them if the operating system doesn't work? Can i plug the SATA drive into my Vista machine?
View 5 Replies View RelatedThis is a tough one for me to explain but I will try very hard. I guess this started around late summer 09. I turned on my computer and it would run chkdsk over and over again. I let it go over night once and it was still scanning the hard drive over and over. Around Christmas time I reinstalled vista and still it would run chkdsk on every boot. Only this time, it ran once and then vista loaded fine. It would stop responding often and run slow but it was better. I manually turned off chkdsk but it made the computer run worse over time.
It would just not do anything so i would have to hold on the power button and turn it back on. The hard drive light will just stay on and the drive will sound a little different than usual. No clicking or metal on metal noise, just a different type of busy noise until you open something. Also you could use the disk clean up but not the defrag. It will say you should defrag volume so i would click defrag now. It would just show you the spinning blue circle and say analyzing but then say you should degrag volume again. So it won't defrag either. System restore also does not work.........
