Rebooting System Registry Cleaners Doen't Work

Jul 9, 2009

I used a program (Flashget) to download a wmv tutorial onto my desktop. When files like these are downloading they have two icons, the actual file icon and a white 'in process' file which disappears when the actual file has finished. For some reason in this case the white icon remained (believe the file download failed to activate) I have tried many things and nothing deletes it. The file has no bytes and Windows tells me "This is no longer located in C:UsersMeDesktop. Verify the item’s location and try again."

I have tried refreshing the desktop, rebooting, using various system registry cleaners, used Move on Boot, MalwareBytes, R Wipe and Clean, Wise Disk Cleaner, Unlocker etc etc. I have also tried renaming the file (not found), renaming another file with the same name and popping it onto the desktop (this doesn't work because its called "filename.wmv." and the period/full stop at the end keeps getting corrected when I try to change another file to the same name). Actually I have now managed to rename an icon with the same name and Vista allows both of them to exist at the same time. I've therefafter retried deleting and renaming the troublesome file all these options have failed.

Registry Cleaners?

Aug 17, 2009

On my recently deceased computer, I had downloaded a registry cleaner many years ago. It was simply called "Registry Cleaner" and it was freeware.

Looking around the modern internet all the newer registry cleaners are for sale only.

The one had was terrific:

cleaned the registry, uninstalled programs, etc.

Why Do Not Touch Registry Cleaners

Dec 12, 2008

I've just re-imaged my hp lappy because of the problems outlined in this post. I'm hoping that the problems were software rather than hardware related, and if that's the case, it might be malware related. However, it occurred to me that there might be another way that I could have messed up my system. I use Ccleaner pretty regularly to clean up the registry, mostly a habit I developed on XP machines, and I've never had a problem. But I was listening to Leo LaPorte the other day and he said he doesn't touch his registry with cleaners because of the problems it causes.

Registry Cleaners Messing Things Up On Vista

May 19, 2009

I read quite often about the possibility of "registry cleaners" messing things up on Vista. Is it recommended not to use a registry cleaner at all? Are there good/bad ones? My computer is almost brand new so I don't believe I have any problems. I used a registry cleaner on my old XP computer.....it found lots of problems.....fixed them and the machine ran better than ever!

CD/DVD Drive Doen't Work

Jul 12, 2009

The CD/DVD drive used to work, but now doesn't. I don't know of anything changed since them. No drive is recognized and I can't open the drive once Vista takes over. I can open it while it's booting. I searched the forums and found something about deleting the upper and lower filters in the registry and followed that. My registry had three "Control Sets", ControlSet001, ControlSet003, and CurrentControlSet. I was able to delete the upper filters in sets 1 and 3, but there was no upper filter in CurrentControlSet. None had lower filters.

That slightly changed the problem. Previously the CD activity LED stayed off, but now it's always on. However, the drive still doesn't open, and nothing is recognized. I went to the device manager and I didn't see any optical drive. And one other interesting thing - When the laptop wakes up from screensaver, the CD/DVD drive starts spinning and won't stop. Still can't open the drive, and it's still not recognized.

Second Monitor Setting Doen't Work

Mar 30, 2009

Vista 32 & Nvidia Is there anyway to set "Horizontal Span" across two monitors? Burnout Paradise has the option to run 1,2 or 3 monitors but requires the Horizontal Span feature. The Extending the desktop to a second monitor setting does not work. Basically I need something that will allow me to set a 3300x1050 desktop resolution across both monitors. I've tried creating a custom resolution in the Nvidia control panel but that didn't work. For those that will suggest Ultramon there isn't a Horizontal span feature that I could find anyways. Browsing Google for an hour or so just came up with others looking for an answer as well. Just thought I'd come to where the smart people are and ask.

Will Not Work Without Rebooting

Mar 22, 2009

Every time I start thinking Vista is not so bad I make the mistake of trying to connect to another Vista computer. Although all sharing/permissions are properly set and it worked the last time it will not work when needed again without rebooting one or more computers. This is why mine and nearly every business on the face of the Earth has not adapted Vista: it is totally unsuitable for mission critical networks of any size. XP is far from perfect but it is orders of magnitude more stable for networking. Vista SP3 or whatever name Microsoft thinks they can peddle the same schlock under is a deader than dead issue already because it is nothing but Vista with a marginally different GUI and with the economy the way it is who gives a rat's behind about it anyway?

Garbled Screen Then Pop, After Rebooting A Few Registry Modifications Come Up On Screen

Sep 29, 2008

Something very odd happened today. I was as usual loading a large file ( 5.4gb ) in to Photoshop and as PS was doing it's business I noticed everything jumped over to my second monitor and the main monitor went blank. Moments later the image on the second monitor turned into a garbled fragmented mess before going into power save mode from which I couldn't get out of. Very strange.....Forced a warm boot. As the system had just been turned on so I can sort of rule out a heat issue - possibly & ram test OK. My workstation is mainly off line but two days ago I had to ftp something and I do remember vista installing an automatic update for windows update (without my permission) which I was very annoyed about, shame on you MS.....and after rebooting I saw a few reg. modifications come up on screen. Could this be the cause of this odd behavior. It's been fine since I had the warm boot - any ideas as to what's going on.

Turning Off All The Startup Programs In System Config, Upon Rebooting

Oct 7, 2009

A friend had issues with his laptop, the system (Vista Home Premium)came with lots of preinstalled acer software, he had tried getting rid of them but had no luck, anyhow, he ended up turning off all the startup programs in system config, upon rebooting, he had the error no os found, i have since managed to get passed htis, however i cannot get any further.

The HD is recognised in Bios. The repair from a disc was completed Now it will boot into windows but nothing, no user, no task bar, nothing just an arrow on the screen with a background. I have tried removing memory and starting up repair for a second time bootsect via cmd nothing, i cant boot into safe mode, it just loops back to normal boot, it has no restore points.

I only have vista basic and vista business discs, and he does not have a disc, it came with a partition, i have tried recovery but it tells me there is not backup, yet i can get the task manager up and into cmd, this shows me all the files, so i know there is no issue there. I am assuming that the boot file in boot.ini is up the duff. Is there any way i can get this thing to boot up with his user and all back to normal?

System Optimizer Registry Cleaner Reeked Havok System

Feb 17, 2009

I have several utility software programs. I am afraid to use any of them. I am using Vista home premium 64 bit. I bought this computer back in april. after I bought it I purchased a new program called Advanced System Optimizer. When I google for information on a quality utility program this program had very high recommendations. I also have Fit-It utilities 7 and an older version of System Mechanic. My computer is running slower now and I know it needs cleaning up. The last time months ago right after I purchase Advance System Optimizer I ran the registry cleaner and it reeked havok on my system. I called the company and they told me their program I purchased was not designed for 64bit systems. Of course they didn't refund my money. Question is: My computer needs cleaning up I can tell it is running slower than it used to. What utility program is out there that will work on my system. My system is Vista Home Premium 64 bit Intel core 2 Duo 2.6 GHZ.

Will XP's Registry Entries Work With Vista?

I'm fine with that. I have a dual HD laptop. I will take out my C drive with XP and put another identical one in to install Vista on. I have reformatted many times. There are certain registry entries I keep to help get my programs back the way I like them. Will XP's registry entries work with Vista?

Registry Entry Creative Webcam Will Not Work

I shall start from the beginning of why i need someones key for a registry entry, i have a creative webcam that will not work with vista, so after using it with XP, i got sick of having it on my hard drive, so i bought a cheap camera so i can use webcam on vista, unfortunately, when i came to install it, the camera installed but kept getting a code 10 driver could not load. So after a few trolling sessions to find a resolution, i found i had to edit a key in the registry, in this case : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlClass{6BDD1FC6-810F-11D0-BEC7-08002BE2092F} and delete the upper and lower values to allow driver load. after a restart, everything looked good, my camera is now loading up and drivers are working, but everytime i try and use it, i get this

System Mechanic To Kept The Registry

Mar 20, 2008

Has anyone heard from IOLO about a 64bit vista version (beta or otherwise) of system mech? I like the "all in one" job it does. And although i don't allow it to run in the backgroud I ran it about every 2 weeks in XP. It kept the registry clean and did a nice defrag job. I am not very good with registries so I like to use software that I feel confident with. I also like the tweaking features, they are understandable. This isn't a commercial for them, but does anyone know of a substitute for SM that will do a similar job?

System Starts Registry Cleaner Program

Jun 10, 2010

Vista Home Premium 64-bit Since I started using a registry cleaner program (Advanced SystemCare Professional), I've noticed that every once in a while the system will go through two startups. The first startup begins normally, but then after the Welcome screen there's a pause of several seconds. Then a window pops up in the upper left corner of my screen that says "setting up personalized settings" followed by "msiexec /fuo {product ID} /qn". There's a second window that appears right after that but it disappears before I can read it. The system then goes through what appears to be a normal shutdown, and then immediately restarts a second time, and from that point on everything seems fine.

This doesn't happen at every startup. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with Advanced SystemCare, but I can't pinpoint the cause. The anomaly disappears if I disable all of ASC's automated functions. It's not a critical problem, but it has aroused my curiosity. I'd welcome any insights anyone can offer.

Auslogics Registry Defragment And System Restore Just Don't Play Well Together

Apr 22, 2008

I know that few of you bother with Restore Points. It's something I play around with for the experience. But I have found out through two reinstalls and more BSODs than I can count that on "my" machine SP1, Auslogics reg. defrag and System Restore just don't play well together! The only way I could get my system to not crash on boot today was to start in safe, uninstall A.R.D. and restore to the only point I had left.

UAC Doen't Allow Without Admin Password

Sep 21, 2009

I have two highschool daughters with laptops they use at school running Vista Home Premium. I have them running on user accounts and I don't want them to have the admin password because if they know what it is they will simply start typing it in all the time, which defeats the whole purpose of running as a user account. There are only two things they need to do that Vista Home Premium UAC doesn't seem to allow without the admin password - connect thumbdrives and connect printers. They need to do both of these things at school.

Is there any way to disable the admin account security only on these two tasks? Also I can easily upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate. If Vista Home Premium can't do it, would upgrading to W7 Ultimate enable me to potentially resolve this security problem? Thumbdrives are the new CD/DVD so it seems really shortsighted not to have a CD/DVD-style security model for them.

Anti Virus System Pro And Can't Get System Restore To Work

My wife was on the internet and suddenly System Pro popped up and started scanning warning my wife of a virus attack on her computer and wanted her to buy the AV Pgm for $49.95. She just clicked all the exits and got off of the internet and now she is locked out of her computer. We can't get system restore to work, Can't get safe mode to work, She has AVG 8 installed but cannot start it. Tried SFC /scannow but was denied access. Tried putting the Windows XP disk in to do a repair and was unable to get it to start. I think the only thing to do is reformat the HD and start over but her PC ignores the A drive and the dvd drives. I cannot get into it in order to re format it.

User Doen't Check Email Updates

Jul 29, 2009

Would be VERY useful if under the "show" drop down window, include "My threads" so user doesn't have to check email for updates. Yes, I could do a search for for my posts, but that requires additional steps for something that may result in no changes or if I just wanted to check quickly. If there are instructions someplace on how to do this, then another suggestion would be to put the Q&A in the FAQs. Its so hard to find info on many MS & related sites, that you have to prepare yourself that you won't find the answer on the first try and expect it to be a time sink, therefore unless its stopping you from completing an important task, some may not want to takes the time and keep getting frustrated until they are ready to take the time.

Quicksys Registry Cleaner: Not Recommended To Defragment Registry Across Drives

Feb 27, 2009

WARNING: only for advanced users who like to clean the registry. Quicksys regcleaner normally $25 free - only 4hrs left from here: http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/

Win 7 compatible - have used this and deleted all 1200 entries it found. It makes a backup - been running for several hours and reboots with no probs. Also working fine so far on my Vista x64 and Win 7 x86 installs. After cleaning you need to shut the app. and reopen it for it to find it's backups. (Easy to find them by hand - it can compress them to.7z files, too ). Have used their regdefrag a lot - identical scans and results to the Auslogics and Glary versions- so use whichever defragger you already have. WARNING: not recommended to defrag registry across drives.
