Registry Cleaners?

Aug 17, 2009

On my recently deceased computer, I had downloaded a registry cleaner many years ago. It was simply called "Registry Cleaner" and it was freeware.

Looking around the modern internet all the newer registry cleaners are for sale only.

The one had was terrific:

cleaned the registry, uninstalled programs, etc.

Why Do Not Touch Registry Cleaners

Dec 12, 2008

I've just re-imaged my hp lappy because of the problems outlined in this post. I'm hoping that the problems were software rather than hardware related, and if that's the case, it might be malware related. However, it occurred to me that there might be another way that I could have messed up my system. I use Ccleaner pretty regularly to clean up the registry, mostly a habit I developed on XP machines, and I've never had a problem. But I was listening to Leo LaPorte the other day and he said he doesn't touch his registry with cleaners because of the problems it causes.

Registry Cleaners - Hp Or Microsoft ?

Apr 14, 2010

i see lots of doubts expressed about using register cleaners. on the other hand this site recommends cleaning. in fact: i believe a computer-generated recommendation on this very site is hawking cleansers to be used before and after installing / reinstalling software / hardware. i don't know what to believe. does hp / microsoft have a registry cleaner ? they have other tools and recommendations to speed up computers.

Registry Cleaners Messing Things Up On Vista

May 19, 2009

I read quite often about the possibility of "registry cleaners" messing things up on Vista. Is it recommended not to use a registry cleaner at all? Are there good/bad ones? My computer is almost brand new so I don't believe I have any problems. I used a registry cleaner on my old XP computer.....it found lots of problems.....fixed them and the machine ran better than ever!

Rebooting System Registry Cleaners Doen't Work

Jul 9, 2009

I used a program (Flashget) to download a wmv tutorial onto my desktop. When files like these are downloading they have two icons, the actual file icon and a white 'in process' file which disappears when the actual file has finished. For some reason in this case the white icon remained (believe the file download failed to activate) I have tried many things and nothing deletes it. The file has no bytes and Windows tells me "This is no longer located in C:UsersMeDesktop. Verify the item’s location and try again."

I have tried refreshing the desktop, rebooting, using various system registry cleaners, used Move on Boot, MalwareBytes, R Wipe and Clean, Wise Disk Cleaner, Unlocker etc etc. I have also tried renaming the file (not found), renaming another file with the same name and popping it onto the desktop (this doesn't work because its called "filename.wmv." and the period/full stop at the end keeps getting corrected when I try to change another file to the same name). Actually I have now managed to rename an icon with the same name and Vista allows both of them to exist at the same time. I've therefafter retried deleting and renaming the troublesome file all these options have failed.

Cannot Save, Open, Download Or Upload!

Jun 29, 2008

I cannot save as on any (ANY!) program that I have. This includes programs that came pre-installed when I picked up the notebook (like Wordpad, for christ's sake). Now, I cannot upload or download anything at all. The dialogue box opens and the hour glass appears. After about five minutes, it informs me that such and such is not responding and the program will have to restart. I recognize that MS has put added percautions in order to prevent piracy. But I cannot even use Wordpad, let alone upload a frickin' video.

I am surprised that someone at MS hasn't been assassinated because of Vista. It is the single worse computer product I have ever (EVER!) used. Send me an email if you want. Just someone please, shed a light on this.

Can Save Registry And Files For Restore To Another Hard Drive

Aug 6, 2009

I backup up data to a remote Western Digital drive using the Vista Backup verything seems fine. I selected to backup all files on the "Back Up Files" menu except TV Shows, Compressed Files and Additional Files. My question is, If this hard drive dies and no longer lets me access it (which is what happened to my last XP computer) can I save registry and all other files that will let me restore to another hard drive with the least amount of hassle? Also is there anyway I can save profiles and passwords and the like. Ideally, I'd like to backup my entire hard drive and be able reinstall it to a new hard drive if this one dies. When my XP hard drive died I had my documents saved but had a real problem with this other information.

Blocked Programs And Download Files

Apr 2, 2008

I have disabled some start up programs I do not want to sart up in Vista. I keep getting this annoying message reminding me of this when Windows start and when it is open. In XP there was a check box to keep this from showing, how do I turn this off in Vista.

Also I sometimes get files by e-mail such as Access programs that I am working on for a customer. Windows Vista will not let me open these. Message: This file is located outside your intranet or on an untrusted site. Microsoft Access will not open this file due to potential security problems. To open the file, copy it to your machine or an accessible network location. I copied it to my D partition but still Vista will not let me open it. I had to copy it to my zip drive and then open it on my XP computer.

Download Files Onto Jump Drive

Apr 24, 2010

I have a train collection and have a program called TrainTracker that I use to keep track of the pieces in my collection. I have the program on my home PC, which runs Widows XP, but when I bought my laptop about a year ago with Windows Vista Home Premium, I copied the program from my PC (Windws XP) onto a jump drive and pasted it onto my laptop (Vista). Everything was going according to plan.

Now I take my laptop where my trains are and I add a bunch of pieces and I want to copy the file from my laptop (Windows Vista) onto a jump drive, so I can then paste it onto my PC (Windows XP) and have the updated TrainTracker, with all the additions I've made. Well, when I copy it from Vista onto a jumpdrive, all it will copy is the original program which I transferred from my PC onto my laptop. It won't copy the new items I've added onto the program.

System Restore Applet Fails To Open / Windows Updates Download But Fail To Install

Jul 29, 2009

A friend's Vista SP1 PC is failing to install Windows Updates and also some other updates such as those for Itunes. The symptom is that the updates get downloaded but the installation phase never finishes (he's left it for 12 hours!). In the case of the Windows Updates, there are several updates that try to install themselves as the PC is shutdown or even restarted, but the message "Installing 1 of 6" never advances: the only recourse is to switch the PC off.

As I was looking at the PC, I noticed one thing which may have a bearing on this and may even be the cause: the System Restore applet (windowssystem32 strui.exe) fails to run. It displays an initial User Account Control window but the "Restore System Files and Settings - choose a restore point" window never appears. No error message is displayed and there are no entries in any of the Event Log logs.

It occurred to me that if System Restore is buggered, this might prevent any updates working if the first thing they try to do is to create a restore point before installation begins. I can't find any reference to System Restore failing to open its initial Window - I've looked on support.microsoft.com and done a general Google search for "Vista System Restore fails". All the info seems to describe possible problems if you get slightly further and select a restore point which then fails to install properly.

Firefox 3.0 Assertion Failed When Trying To Download Files

Jul 26, 2008

Lately whenever I try to download any file from anywhere I get the following "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library" error: Assertion Failed!

Program: C:WindowsSysWOW64verclsid.ex
File: D:
tmdssecurityproductsantim...dynami...ues.cpp
Line: 979
Expression: false

For information on how your program can cause an assertion failure, see the Visual C++ documentation on asserts (Press Retry to debug the application - JIT must be enabled) The thought just occurred to me that there might be conflicting mozilla settings, since I'm using a hard drive (d that previously had mozilla on it, but I didn't remove the data.

Exe Files Open As Text Files

Sep 26, 2009

I have encountered a very strange problem. I have downloaded two exe files recently. When I doubleclick on the exe file, instead of the application installing, what should happen but Word of all things opens with, in the case of one of them a box headed 'File Conversion - arw5setup.msi', and a similar wording in the second, asking me to select the encoding that makes my document readable. Whatever I select, the exe file then opens as a text file.

(The reference to an msi file is baffling as both files were exe files.) When it happened the first time I thought it was a corrupt file, but when it happened again it has to be that there is something wrong with my system. Is this a virus? Spybot has just come up with a clean slate ...

Quicksys Registry Cleaner: Not Recommended To Defragment Registry Across Drives

Feb 27, 2009

WARNING: only for advanced users who like to clean the registry. Quicksys regcleaner normally $25 free - only 4hrs left from here: http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/

Win 7 compatible - have used this and deleted all 1200 entries it found. It makes a backup - been running for several hours and reboots with no probs. Also working fine so far on my Vista x64 and Win 7 x86 installs. After cleaning you need to shut the app. and reopen it for it to find it's backups. (Easy to find them by hand - it can compress them to.7z files, too ). Have used their regdefrag a lot - identical scans and results to the Auslogics and Glary versions- so use whichever defragger you already have. WARNING: not recommended to defrag registry across drives.

"Confirm Open After Download" Missing

Jun 5, 2008

It seems that, in their haste to make Windows Vista easier to use, Microsoft has weeded out quite a few useful features -- including the capability where you could choose whether certain files opened automatically once they were downloaded, or whether you wanted to save a permanent copy onto your hard drive. I am talking about a check box called "Confirm open after download" that appeared in file type property pages in previous versions of Windows. It seems in Windows Vista that this option has disappeared. What I wish to ask is, is there anything that can be done about this issue?
