Installing Programs: Registry Mess
Jul 4, 2008Possibly I should have read a few forums and tutorials when I first got my new Vista computer before downloading and installing a bunch of programs, but alas I didn't and now I have something of a mess. I have some program files installed to my user account, I have some installed to the Admin account because I couldn't install them to my user account, and now I have some programs that absolutely must be installed to the user account in order to work properly but can't be because of the whole Denial of Administrator Privileges that has been brought into the picture with Vista.
I also strongly suspect some program files got installed twice also. Maybe not, but when I configure a program in my user account (like iTunes or Microsoft Outlook) those changes are not evident on the admin account. And an outrageous amount of the space on my C drive has eaten up already, much more than I suspect I've actually installed. Basically, I would really, really love to get all of the program files onto one account, preferably the Admin account, make sure any duplicates are taken care of, and otherwise clean it up because i don't want a big sluggish registry mess within a month of owning this computer. Something like that?
Registry Entry Files Will Only Open With Notepad
Apr 2, 2009Went here and tried all the suggestions but the last one: Listed under "Registry Export Not Inserting Into Registry" dated 9/12/08. I need help with this - have tried all the suggestions here with the same results as James. I got as far as "Open Regedit.exe, from the File menu, choose Import and select the REG association fix." and cannot figure out how to do this.

Aug 6, 2009I backup up data to a remote Western Digital drive using the Vista Backup verything seems fine. I selected to backup all files on the "Back Up Files" menu except TV Shows, Compressed Files and Additional Files. My question is, If this hard drive dies and no longer lets me access it (which is what happened to my last XP computer) can I save registry and all other files that will let me restore to another hard drive with the least amount of hassle? Also is there anyway I can save profiles and passwords and the like. Ideally, I'd like to backup my entire hard drive and be able reinstall it to a new hard drive if this one dies. When my XP hard drive died I had my documents saved but had a real problem with this other information.

Jun 29, 2008I tried nortons WinDoctor to help fix any problems with missing shortcuts, missing shared files, etc etc and my pc wouldnt startup the next time! It used to work really well with XP and never did XP not start after WinDoctor,it only speeded the pc up,in my experience.Im reluctant to "try" any other registry fixing software,unless there are some well known Vista registry fixing software that someone can recommend in here?

Feb 7, 2009i am a novice at this and would apreciate any advise you could give,i have a hp vista home premium 32 bit pc.i backed up my files onto an external hardrive as i have read was the proper thing to do.i think one of my downloads was infected with a trojan horse so i tried a system restore,that did not help,so i did a system recovery back to factory settings i would now like to install my files from the external hardrive but i dont know where to begin as i understand when they get backed up on the hardrive they are in a compressed state

Mar 10, 2010I was using Windows XP on my desktop before. There was some changes I had to make with the hardware. I am currently on my laptop with Windows Vista 64-bit. I plan on installing XP or Windows 7 hopefully this weekend. But since it may take longer than expected: I do have certain files I transfered from my old hard-drive in an external hard-drive enclosure through my laptop onto an external hard-drive.
I was wondering if I edit the files, the rtf files (rich text files) or the mp3 metadata for instance: Will it be a problem when those files get re-introduced into a 32-bit environment or another OS? I doubt it since a file is a file. If I download or view a file from myspace or soundcloud, or microsofts site I am pretty sure it is irrelevant what operating system was used to make the program. As long as I have the right player, program, viewer, application, etc. I know if a file is 64-bit it won't work in 32-bit.
Installing, Loading Files And Then Screen Goes Black Forever
Jun 11, 2006I reboot the computer, boot from DVD.
I get the screen that says "Windows is loading files", and then I get the screen with the loading bar at the bottom (the one that looks a bit like the standard Windows XP loading bar) and then the screen goes black and nothing happens. I've tried leaving it for a good half hour, still to no avail.
Installing Blackberry Software, Failed To Install ISKernal Files
Apr 28, 2008I have Windows Vista Home Premium edition. I just purchased a Sprint World Edition Blackberry 8830. I am trying to install the disk on my laptop and at the end of the install I get this message: "1. Failed to install ISKernal Files. Make sure you have appropriate privileges on this machine."
My machine is not networked. I am the only one who uses it. Sprint and Blackberry support do not have this error message and say it must be Microsoft. And of course I am a month beyond my 90-day free support.

Win 7 compatible - have used this and deleted all 1200 entries it found. It makes a backup - been running for several hours and reboots with no probs. Also working fine so far on my Vista x64 and Win 7 x86 installs. After cleaning you need to shut the app. and reopen it for it to find it's backups. (Easy to find them by hand - it can compress them to.7z files, too ). Have used their regdefrag a lot - identical scans and results to the Auslogics and Glary versions- so use whichever defragger you already have. WARNING: not recommended to defrag registry across drives.

Nov 13, 2009I am using this program to clean up my registry and it seems to work fine except the errors keep coming back. I can do a scan, clean up all the errors and then shut down and start up and I have a new 20 registry error list and most or all of the errors relate to "bad path for the value" and its windows files that seem to be at fault. I don't understand why Microsoft operating system would create registry errors on a startup, before anything has been installed etc. is RegistryBooster misleading me or what. I am running win7 but it did the same thing on vista home premium so I think the question is valid for this group.

Jun 30, 2008I really don't know if the problem is with Verizon, Vista, MS, or something else, but hopefully someone has seen it: Friday, everything was fine. Monday afternoon, big problem. The only major difference was the Vista Service Pack 1 I ran this morning, so maybe that's it. I run the service pack on my Toshiba Satellite laptop (takes an hour or so). The next time I try to use the Verizon Versalink Gateway, it does connect my laptop to my Dell desktop (running XP), and I click on "access shared files". I open the C: directory on my desktop, and in a few seconds the status bar reads "179 items (Disk free space: 91.7 GB)." The problem is that a file showed up about every 15-30 seconds - for 179 files, it took 30 minutes until all files were visible in the panel on the right.
It "sees" that there are 179 files in the directory immediately, but the the dark gray bar CREEPS across the top of the screen, taking forever. If I want a file that starts with "w", I'd be waiting a half an hour for it. I'd be faster driving somewhere and getting two 5.25" floppy drives and installing one on each computer.
Hangs When "installing Files"
Feb 21, 2008Having a bit of trouble with a new build HTPC. When I run Vista to install it goes through the "installing files" part and I get to the blue/green screen but then that's it. The HDD light stays on and the CD-ROM drive spins up but no activity and spins down. Then it spins up again but still nothing.

How To Repair Registry
May 25, 2008I installed a new registry cleaner, RegCure I think, ran it, cleaned like 12k errors, more than I thought I should have, turned off my computer and went to bed. I come back and its acting like windows 2000!
None of the services are working, I can't access the backups I made, and I can't use the system restore because the host program wont respond, or something I ran safe mode and got SOME of the drivers working again, as I thought I would, so it sort of seems my computer has amnesia Does anyone know how I can get more services to work without
reformatting my computer?
Registry Cleaner
Aug 6, 2009I've read in some posts that a registry cleaner isn't recommended for Vista,primarily because some can install malware instead of getting rid of it.
But I've got some issues with Vista and I swear it's from leftover software installations - such as SQL 2008 beta. I don't want to reinstall Vista because it's a pain in the butt. Are there any registry cleaners that are recommended as safe?

Sep 1, 2009A friend of mine has his Vista PC automatically installing an update, then reboots with no prompt before login any user. And that's looped forever. What's strange is it does the same in safe mode.
At present no session can be opened, nor even reached. Nothing seems to be possible.
I'm thinking I could alter/delete the RunOnce entry in the registry but I would either need
- an XP tool that can read a Vista registry from a file on a separate HD (yes, I would take the HD to my PC)
- or a Linux live CD tool (but I'm asking this question on a Linux forum) that could do the same
- or of course any other brilliant idea.

Mar 2, 2008I have downloaded several menu tweaks from this site (copy/move to folder for one). The extension shown on the link is .reg. When I download they are saved as .efw. When I right click there is no merge option, just open. I haven't done these things before. Only used the old pwr. toys and pwr. tweaks from the old days.
