Registry Fixing Software, Missing Shortcuts And Shared Files
Jun 29, 2008
I tried nortons WinDoctor to help fix any problems with missing shortcuts, missing shared files, etc etc and my pc wouldnt startup the next time! It used to work really well with XP and never did XP not start after WinDoctor,it only speeded the pc up,in my experience.Im reluctant to "try" any other registry fixing software, unless there are some well known Vista registry fixing software that someone can recommend in here?

I have an Dell XPS 420 which is overclocked (Q6700, 3,33 GHz) and lately vista has crashed all the times and I think it might be because of a corrupted file in windows. I tried to do a sfc /scannow however when it tries to repair the error, it gave me this message:
Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.
Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix
some of them.
Details are included in the CBS.Log windirLogsCBSCBS.log. For
example

I have also attached my reliability monitor graph and the scores aren't pretty good.

Under the adminstrator log in, all the shortcut images are showing under "all Programs" under the start menu. Under all other user log in's, there is a blank file image(white square) with an arrow. I can not access the program when click on the white square. Also, the shortcut tab is missing under properties. I recently used wipedrive(lost restore cd) to restore the system to original factory condition.
Some items require me to find the file location to reinstall. I tried the rebuild icon tutorial, the file associations, retore vista shortcuts/icons & the default program options. Nothing has worked. Also, I noticed when I try to open another window in internet explorer it says "can not display page". It use to say something to the effect "open tab tutorial".

Instead of the usual icons/pictures there are white boxes for some of the shorcuts on my desktop. I was able to fix some by using the "change icon" option under properties. But I cannot access this option for some, like Outlook.

I turned on my computer this morning, put in my password in the log-in screen as usual. Then when windows started I noticed that my wallpaper was the original vista wallpaper, all my sidebar gadgets were just the starting ones, and that about half my desktop shortcuts were missing. On top of that, all my documents, pictures, music, and even my bookmarks on mozilla firefox were gone!! But oddly enough when I go into C:/users/Matt everything is where it should be. But if i use the links from the start bar, it takes me to Users/Temp folder.

as a software developer I find it very hard to use Vista just using the keyboard. One of the things I'm missing is the option to create new folders from within the Vista Common Dialogs for loading and saving files. Usually on Windows this is "+, , ". Did I perhaps misconfigure Vista to not support keyboard shortcuts? Or are they missing indeed?

I have set up a Network based on a Desktop Vista based, which includes a wireless to a laptop Vista based and a hard wired XP desktop. This was done to acquire old data files of the XP desktop and transfer to the Vista desktop. That has all been accomplished. Those files have since been removed from the XP but the shared folders still show up on the Vista Desktop and Laptop network. Is there a way to remove these folders from the Network since they no longer exist on the original XP desktop?

Network fully operational - Public Folder on Vista can be shared on XP - no problem BUT when I attempt to share another folder on Vista it requests username. Options include username on Vista, Guest, Everyone or Add name. It appears that Vista cannot see usernames on XP. Do I have to add these usernames to the Vista computer? I think the 'everyone' option applies only to 'Domains' which are not recognised on XP.

I just recieved my new desktop from CyberPowerPC last Thursday. On Monday morning, Windows could not start up due to a missing or corrupt registry. However, Sunday night when I shut off the PC, it was still working perfectly fine. When I turn on the PC, this is the screen I get: The only options given to me afterwards are 3 safe modes, attempt to reboot with the last known good setting, or start Windows normally. Choosing any of those options just gives me the missing/corrupt registry screen again and sends me back to those 5 choices, OR screen just goes black and nothing happens.
I've tried to use the CyberPowerPC Windows recovery disk that came with the PC, setting boot priority in the BIOS to CD/DVD drive to the top. Screen tells me to press any key to boot from CD, then this screen appears: Once it finishes loading, this appears: But afterwards, the screen becomes blank, and I see the monitor actually darkening. The numlock light on my keyboard darkens, meaning that turned off or something too. Here is what CyberPower has told me to do: "The error message you are seeing is a corrupted Windows system file that would require the operating system to be reinstalled. This can be done by booting directly from the Cyberpower Recovery disc. Make sure theoptical drive is set as the first boot device in the BIOS and tap the ENTER key as the computer starts to boot the computer off the disc rather than the hard drive." But of course, that isn't working...The PC is still new, so I have no problem with losing any data if it comes to that.

I am also facing a similiar issue, like given in the thread - Cannot delete shortcut file
I cant deleted some invalid paths and shortcuts in the system....
Here when I open any application and try to insert or open a file for that application, I am facing the problem.
For Example,
In VLC Player, I click on Media --> Open File
This gives you the Box to select the file you want and in the bottom of that small window in the " File name " box, you will be having a drop down box to select the file.
Here all the deleted files are listed with the file name and path, which was deleted months ago...
When you select the file it says, "Path does not exist, try again"
So, I think all the invalid shortcuts are stored some where in the system, which displays there.
So we need to deleted that particular cache.
I found out that there is something called " Indexed Cache " in Vista, which saves all the shortcuts as the files are stored.
I need to find out how to delete the file shortcuts from that location.
Similiar issue is there in Outlook 2007, when I compose a new message and insert file.
It gives the drop down box like the above issue with all the deleted files path.
I tried rebuilding the Indexing Options as advised before.
It didnt work.
I performed all the basic steps, like deleting cookies, temp files from system, ran chkdsk, disk cleanup, and also used some popular and unpopular cleaning software and nothing worked.

I have Vista x64 Ultimate on my desktop and Vista x64 Home Premium on my wireless laptop. I’m trying to share files and folders. I believe I’ve done everything I needed to enable file sharing on both computers. All my Sharing and Discovery buttons are turned on except Password Protect Sharing. I added “Everyone” to my sharing list on both computers. Both computers have the same Workgroup name.
I don’t know how to access the shared files/folders from either computer. All the web sites I’ve visited tell me how to enable sharing but none of them tell me how to access them. It’s probably a simple process but I can’t figure it out.

After months of diddling in an effort to access shared files on my XP computer from my Vista computer I was finally able to access the files using Windows Explorer after the final reboot after installing SP1. My glee was short lived however because after turning my Vista computer off and then on again I still cannot access the shared files on my XP computer. I can see the XP computer in "Network and Sharing Center" > "View Full Map", but I can't view the shared files by double clicking on the XP computer icon.
Network discovery - on
File sharing - on
Public folder sharing - on
Printer sharing - on
Workgroup is WORKGROUP on both computers I am able to access a shared printer on the XP computer I am able to access the shared files on my XP computer by using Internet Explorer and entering \Computername in the address bar. I am able to access a NAS drive on my network using Windows Explorer.

I have been having serious difficulty getting my laptop to start in the last few months but have usually been able to solve the problems for a while until they come back but now I am faced with a new boot issue that I cannot fix.
When I turn on the laptop, after about 5 minutes I get the message "windows failed to start because the system registry file is missing or corrupt" and gives this location windowssystem32configsystem and also status: oxc000000f. I am instructed to boot from the vista dvd and repair windows, startup problems or whatever but when I try this I get the exact same message described above.
I have had a lot of startup problems recently but they have always been solved either by booting from the dvd and reparing startup problems, or more commonly, by running the chkdisk which would generally have my laptop running well for a week or so before new problems occurred. I've searched the web but people keep suggesting booting from the vista dvd which as I said isnt working. No matter what I try I get the same message, safe mode etc will also not work.

using the laptop through wireless I can see other computer and even list their shared folders but when I try to actually list files the connection timesout and gives an error os dennied access to the shared folder. If I try to use VNC for instance, the client connects, asks for pass and then after the remote screen starts to appear.. it hangs... no response after that . The strange part of the problem is that if I connect the laptop through a wired connection everything works ok I access shared folders, I print remotely, no problems. I tried a number of things , the most obvious, like firewalls diferent settings on the network etc. What I can't figure out is what can be so different in the PC for the wired to work but not the wireless.

I need help with this - have tried all the suggestions here with the same results as James. I got as far as "Open Regedit.exe, from the File menu, choose Import and select the REG association fix." and cannot figure out how to do this.

I backup up data to a remote Western Digital drive using the Vista Backup verything seems fine. I selected to backup all files on the "Back Up Files" menu except TV Shows, Compressed Files and Additional Files. My question is, If this hard drive dies and no longer lets me access it (which is what happened to my last XP computer) can I save registry and all other files that will let me restore to another hard drive with the least amount of hassle? Also is there anyway I can save profiles and passwords and the like. Ideally, I'd like to backup my entire hard drive and be able reinstall it to a new hard drive if this one dies. When my XP hard drive died I had my documents saved but had a real problem with this other information.

I really don't know if the problem is with Verizon, Vista, MS, or something else, but hopefully someone has seen it: Friday, everything was fine. Monday afternoon, big problem. The only major difference was the Vista Service Pack 1 I ran this morning, so maybe that's it. I run the service pack on my Toshiba Satellite laptop (takes an hour or so). The next time I try to use the Verizon Versalink Gateway, it does connect my laptop to my Dell desktop (running XP), and I click on "access shared files". I open the C: directory on my desktop, and in a few seconds the status bar reads "179 items (Disk free space: 91.7 GB)." The problem is that a file showed up about every 15-30 seconds - for 179 files, it took 30 minutes until all files were visible in the panel on the right.
It "sees" that there are 179 files in the directory immediately, but the the dark gray bar CREEPS across the top of the screen, taking forever. If I want a file that starts with "w", I'd be waiting a half an hour for it. I'd be faster driving somewhere and getting two 5.25" floppy drives and installing one on each computer.

Is it possible to create a new personal user folder (i.e. I want to name it "Shortcuts" or "X-Files")? I tried renaming one of the existing personal user folder (i.e. Downloads renamed to Shortcuts) and changing the location it points to another folder. However, if you execute the shell command "Shell: Downloads", it will still go to the folder being pointed to now by the "Shortcuts" folder. Is there a way to change this via registery?

After two days of trying to recover my vista installation I've got a new version of vista and it it's still telling me i've got missing or corrupt files. Where can get the correct files/ a good recovery disk/ a bootable virus cd (tried bit defender - didn't work). I've read soooo many pages about this and nothing works. Startup repair - doesn't work; complete system recovery - doesn't work; formatting during the vista installation - doesn't work.

While dealing with tech support from a peripherals company regarding a mouse problem, they had me check for certain system files, and we determined that several appeared to missing, including input.inf, msmouse.inf, and hidusd.sys. Someone suggested I use System File Checker (sfc / scannow), but this did not restore the files, and give error messages telling me that there were corrupted files but they could not be repaired. what might have happened to these files (and any others that might also be missing) and more importantly, how can I get them back.
