Fixing Corrupted Files In
Feb 7, 2009
I have an Dell XPS 420 which is overclocked (Q6700, 3,33 GHz) and lately vista has crashed all the times and I think it might be because of a corrupted file in windows. I tried to do a sfc /scannow however when it tries to repair the error, it gave me this message:
Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.
Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix
some of them.
Details are included in the CBS.Log windirLogsCBSCBS.log. For
example
C:WindowsLogsCBSCBS.log
I have also attached my reliability monitor graph and the scores aren't pretty good.

I tried nortons WinDoctor to help fix any problems with missing shortcuts, missing shared files, etc etc and my pc wouldnt startup the next time! It used to work really well with XP and never did XP not start after WinDoctor,it only speeded the pc up,in my experience.Im reluctant to "try" any other registry fixing software, unless there are some well known Vista registry fixing software that someone can recommend in here?

Whenever i download a file such as .msi installer, .exe executable, or .zip archive with IE and run it, it crashes (not IE but the file that was downloaded.) This recently started happening on my Home Premium 64-bit Vista installation, and the problem remains after reinstalling Vista two times from scratch. If the file was downloaded on another PC and saved to a flash drive, it runs fine on Vista. I have tried the sfc /scannow command, as well as disabling any firewall, antivirus, etc. and changing the IE settings. This occurs on a clean installation of Windows Vista also. Here is the crash report, for example this time I was trying to install the FireFox installer after downloading it with IE:

I was doing nothing other than typing up a word document when my laptop froze. I restarted it, and it froze at an earlier stage (after entering my password). In the top left corner of the screen a red rectange was appearing. It was bad. I tried restarting several more times and it would freeze at varying stages - mostly at pasword input and sometimes on making it to the windows desktop..................

Please obtain a new copy of the program With Auslogics Start Up Manager, tried to remove the entry with Start Up Management to no avail. It just props up again. since having installed 64 bit version, I'm experiencing a weird behaviour. Many downloaded raw files (*.cr2) from my Canon camera are corrupted when browsing them in the destination folder, but if I check them browsing the card they are not (and it's not a camera problem: no corrupted files when viewing images in camera). This happens with different cards and using different programs -viewers or editors. I suppose it's a Vista problem, perhaps a driver or codec issue, or perhaps connected to downloading (although I've also tried to copy them from the card and paste them in a desktop folder without using a downloader - Zoombrowser, Lightroom, ACDSee)

I figured out how to run a sfc /scannow from the command prompt which showed corrupted system files which it could not repair. It created a = CBS log file which I also managed to open. After that, I am totally at = sea. I do not understand anything in the log file. How do I effect = repairs? Do I do a repair install? If I do, will it disengage the = programs that I have installed as XP does?.....

My son has done some college work at home and saved it directly to a brand new 4GB FAT32 USB flash drive, which he Ejected before removal. Now he is at college, and can't open the files. The directory structure is visible, but when he tries to open a file (for example a PNG), Windows reports the file is corrupted. He has emailed on of the files to me, and I get the same result. All the utilities I can find seem to focus on lost or deleted files, not corrupted ones.

Vista SP1, Word 2003
If I copy a file from another PC to my USB memory stick, then open it on my Vista laptop, make some changes and click save I get an error message saying the file is now G:~[134].tmp and is corrupted. I cannot recover the document, and it disappears entirely from the memory stick. If I copy the document directly to my laptop hard drive, I work as a teacher in a small school and 3 of my colleagues have reported the same issue. All use Vista, Word 2003, but different makes of laptop. We have tried using new/different memory sticks but the problem continues. Our XP desktops are unaffected.

There must be a way to be sure all Vista and W7 system files are signed (not corrupted). I've researched and have not found a way.

Vista evidently has serious USB issues on many computers (including my own). What concerns me most is that these problems have plagued Vista since launch and Microsoft still have not fixed them. Googling around to try to find solutions to my own problems, I come across people with BRAND NEW computers who are struggling with failing USB ports. So these problems are persisting nearly a year since Vista public release, and many years since the beta release. I am therefore left wondering if Microsoft have completely no idea what the problem is and are completely unable to resolve the problem?

#1 - Links points to My Pictures Location
I unwittingly set my Links shortcut to point to the same folder as My Pictures and for some reason I cannot undo it. If I open my Links, instead of just showing my shortcut, it also shows the folders in My Pictures. Although not crucial to ops, it is rather annoying to see duplicates on my folders in My Pictures.
I found the tutorial on resetting Personal Folders useful but it did not have anything on fixing this type of "merge." The registry entry for Links is just "&Links" which tell me nothing much.
Using regedit, I have managed to fix my personal folder including My Pictures. Only this Links problem persists.
#2 - Wrong icon for C:UsersMy_Name
Second problem --
When I go to the C:Users folders, instead of seeing the folder with my log-on name, I see the folder called DOCUMENTS.
I checked the registry entry for Personal and it points to the correct folder in an E: drive.

What is the difference between a 'Manual: Restore Point' and a 'System: Scheduled Checkpoint' if any? Because I just had to tinker with the task in Task Scheduler to make it more to my liking I no longer get scheduled checkpoints after midnight if the computer is on--I don't get any scheduled checkpoint. Before I get into more detail of what I recall changing--I know I deleted the default multiple task to also create a scheduled checkpoint at boot or logon--I want to test whether anyone will tackle this problem with me or if it has been handled so many times over the years that the post will just be ignored?

Background info: vista installed on drive 1 xp installed on drive 2 dual booted just fine. A week ago my main drive stopped working - a manufacturer fault. I lost everything on the drive. I replaced the main drive 1, installed vista 64 again. Drive 2 was unaffected. I would like to dual boot so that I can run xp again, but don't know exactly how to set that up again. XP is already (I assume) on drive 2. There is no boot.ini on Drive 1 now. I know there are tutorials on how to set up dual booting, but I don't want to re-install xp if it's not necessary. The files on drive 2 are there and unaffected.

If you change the name of your computer (under Control PanelSystem and MaintenanceSystem), then the scheduled task that Windows Calendar has will NOT be updated with the new name of the computer. The result is that this scheduled task does not run properly when it is supposed to, and when you open up the Task Scheduler, you get an error popping up in Task Scheduler:
"An error has ocurred for the task Reminders - {User Name}. Error message: The specified account name is not valid."
Where {User Name} is your user name.

I see lots and lots of discussions. This is EASY to fix. I have Vista & IE8, BTW. click on Start (or the circle thingy for Vista), All Programs and right click Windows Mail (under All Programs, not on the start menu). Select Properties. The value "Start in:" is set to %UserProfile%. This does not work because opening an attachment cannot save the attachment to a temporary file on that folder. I changed it to "%UserProfile%Local SettingsTemp" and that fixes the problem. You can also just clear the field "Start in:" (remove the value) and that fixes it also.

After installing SP1, my user account was changed to standard user and many of the programs (including IE7) would not work properly AFTER I changed my user account back to Administrator. The other accounts that were Administrator and a new Administrator account would still not allow IE7 to work properly unless "run as Administrator". When I turn UAC off, the problems go away.

Windows Vista Home Premium I receive a message when attempting to delete any file or any action regading the Recycle Bin that reads: "The Recycle Bin on C: is corrupted. Do you want to empty the Recycle Bin for this drive?" There is a choice for Yes and No. When I choose "Yes" the notice posted that it is "Deleting 1 item (2.28 KB)" and the progress bar indicates activity. When I click on the "More information" button, I find it is indicating: Time remaining: Calculating...Items remaining: Discovered 1 item (2.28 KB)... Speed: Calculating...This morning I started the process and went out for breakfast. On my return an hour and one-half later it was still running. When I open the Recycle Bin, no items show, but the the dreaded messsages appears. I will close only when clicking the "No" button twice.

do not appear on the NG in Windows Live Mail on my computer. It was OK previously. I have unsubscribed the NG and then subscribed again. But still the same problem. But I see the msgs in the Sent Items folder. Tried sending thru:microsoft.public.windows.vista.mail
but still the same thing. I do not see the post in the NG, but it is there in the Sent Items folder. In both above cases, the posts can be seen in Google Groups from whereI have no choice but to post from. MY NGs may be corrupted.

I saw this problem addressed last year by Gary, but I didn't see it actually get corrected. My computer keeps giving me this prompt every few days,"THE MESSAGE STORE HAS BEEN CORRUPTED BY AN APPLICATION EXTERNAL TO WINDOWS MAIL. WINDOWS MAIL HAS BEEN ABLE TO SUCCESSFULLY RECOVER FROM THIS CORRUPTION.(0x00000000) Then it proceeds to restore all my deleted emails from the past few day, (at least 100) and starts adding new folders and dates. When they are recovered, they're headers only, no content in them. I had the Confiker Virus about 6 weeks ago and this seemed to start around the same time. This is really a pain having to delete all these messages...

have vista home basic x32 and have been having recycle bin problems for 2wks now. i have tried things listed here on links i found to fix recycle bin, dont work. i was told it could be my mcafee virus protection because its known to cause problems. i had some trojans and virus, but have since then gotten rid of it all completely, and at that time thats when the bin started acting up wont empty, shows its full on desktop and pic of it IN the bin folder shows its full/empty click to empty and hear the sound but nothing happens. i send stuff to the bin then i open the bin and nothing SHOWS that its there. yet if i click empty recycle bin box comes up and says are you sure you want to perm delete etc etc, so that shows there are files in there but nothing shows in the folder like i said its all a mess and there has to be a way to fix it cant i completely delete it and all that goes with it and start over with creating a new one?
