I am about to run recover on my HP m8100y computer-Vista Ultimate 32 bit. This on the advice of HP tech people...I have corrupted files in the operating system. I need info on backing up a ton of things related to windows. Let's start with the Mail address book.
View 7 RepliesWhenever i download a file such as .msi installer, .exe executable, or .zip archive with IE and run it, it crashes (not IE but the file that was downloaded.) This recently started happening on my Home Premium 64-bit Vista installation, and the problem remains after reinstalling Vista two times from scratch. If the file was downloaded on another PC and saved to a flash drive, it runs fine on Vista. I have tried the sfc /scannow command, as well as disabling any firewall, antivirus, etc. and changing the IE settings. This occurs on a clean installation of Windows Vista also. Here is the crash report, for example this time I was trying to install the FireFox installer after downloading it with IE:

I'm trying to reinstall SP2 on my vista PC, I got a hold of some bad memory and I think some of my files are corrupted. anyone know how to do that?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have an Dell XPS 420 which is overclocked (Q6700, 3,33 GHz) and lately vista has crashed all the times and I think it might be because of a corrupted file in windows. I tried to do a sfc /scannow however when it tries to repair the error, it gave me this message:

some of them.

I was doing nothing other than typing up a word document when my laptop froze. I restarted it, and it froze at an earlier stage (after entering my password). In the top left corner of the screen a red rectange was appearing. It was bad. I tried restarting several more times and it would freeze at varying stages - mostly at pasword input and sometimes on making it to the windows desktop..................

Many downloaded raw files (*.cr2) from my Canon camera are corrupted when browsing them in the destination folder, but if I check them browsing the card they are not (and it's not a camera problem: no corrupted files when viewing images in camera). This happens with different cards and using different programs -viewers or editors. I suppose it's a Vista problem, perhaps a driver or codec issue, or perhaps connected to downloading (although I've also tried to copy them from the card and paste them in a desktop folder without using a downloader - Zoombrowser, Lightroom, ACDSee)

It created a = CBS log file which I also managed to open. After that, I am totally at = sea. I do not understand anything in the log file. How do I effect = repairs? Do I do a repair install? If I do, will it disengage the = programs that I have installed as XP does?.....
View 7 Replies View RelatedMy son has done some college work at home and saved it directly to a brand new 4GB FAT32 USB flash drive, which he Ejected before removal. Now he is at college, and can't open the files. The directory structure is visible, but when he tries to open a file (for example a PNG), Windows reports the file is corrupted. He has emailed on of the files to me, and I get the same result. All the utilities I can find seem to focus on lost or deleted files, not corrupted ones.

If I copy a file from another PC to my USB memory stick, then open it on my Vista laptop, make some changes and click save I get an error message saying the file is now G:~[134].tmp and is corrupted. I cannot recover the document, and it disappears entirely from the memory stick.If I copy the document directly to my laptop hard drive, I work as a teacher in a small school and 3 of my colleagues have reported the same issue. All use Vista, Word 2003, but different makes of laptop. We have tried using new/different memory sticks but the problem continues. Our XP desktops are unaffected.
There must be a way to be sure all Vista and W7 system files are signed (not corrupted). I've researched and have not found a way.

BTW the folders name on the flash disk is (MINWINPC) but their is no nmae on the files or exetentions .

View 7 Replies View RelatedI've had for the last 2-3 days: There's an FTP that I need access to to move files back and forth between co-workers. I use Windows Explorer to access this, normally with no issues.....just type in the ftp address, and there it is. Now whenever I do this, I get an error: This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel.
I went into the Set Associations control panel, but don't know what extension to change, as it's not really a "file", and there's no mention anywhere of FTP. Everyone else that uses the FTP doesn't have an issue, so it's not a problem with the ftp itself.
The Windows Vista Home Premium on my new ASUS laptop has aquired a new form of weirdness lately. I keep it updated as the updates from Microsoft come in, and for about three weeks now, I see the following two erratic behaviours: Files I delete from my desktop return from oblivion upon the next reboot. Doesn't matter if I throw them in the bin, clear out the bin afterwards, or even use shift-delete to bypass the bin altogether: next reboot I have about a 50-50 change of seeing them pop up on my desktop again. And it seems to happen somewhere around the time the boot process is complete. I have not tested this in other directories, but will do so if you think it is relevant.

How auto back up my documents, pictures & music to the external hard drive. On my old laptop (running XP), I used to have a "briefcase" in my external hard drive. Every time that was connected, it would automatically add any new files in the briefcase (in this case, music). I am constantly downloading new music & etc. so it's a tedious task to manually back up these files.

I also can see the hidden file, its size, and the name of the file but the warning states it cannot be opened because the path has been changed or altered. I still see that the user has many files, and I do not seem to have gained any disk space...is it still possible to get these back.

and if i want it back is there any option of getting it..and to keep the size of it to a limited one bcoz im having just 30 GB to my C drive ...
After installing SP1, my user account was changed to standard user and many of the programs (including IE7) would not work properly AFTER I changed my user account back to Administrator. The other accounts that were Administrator and a new Administrator account would still not allow IE7 to work properly unless "run as Administrator". When I turn UAC off, the problems go away.

Do you want to empty the Recycle Bin for this drive?" There is a choice for Yes and No. When I choose "Yes" the notice posted that it is "Deleting 1 item (2.28 KB)" and the progress bar indicates activity. When I click on the "More information" button, I find it is indicating: Time remaining: Calculating...Items remaining: Discovered 1 item (2.28 KB)... Speed: Calculating...This morning I started the process and went out for breakfast. On my return an hour and one-half later it was still running. When I open the Recycle Bin, no items show, but the the dreaded messsages appears. I will close only when clicking the "No" button twice.

but still the same thing. I do not see the post in the NG, but it is there in the Sent Items folder. In both above cases, the posts can be seen in Google Groups from whereI have no choice but to post from. MY NGs may be corrupted.
I saw this problem addressed last year by Gary, but I didn't see it actually get corrected. My computer keeps giving me this prompt every few days,"THE MESSAGE STORE HAS BEEN CORRUPTED BY AN APPLICATION EXTERNAL TO WINDOWS MAIL. WINDOWS MAIL HAS BEEN ABLE TO SUCCESSFULLY RECOVER FROM THIS CORRUPTION.(0x00000000) Then it proceeds to restore all my deleted emails from the past few day, (at least 100) and starts adding new folders and dates. When they are recovered, they're headers only, no content in them. I had the Confiker Virus about 6 weeks ago and this seemed to start around the same time. This is really a pain having to delete all these messages...
