UAC Corrupted In SP1?
Apr 2, 2008
After installing SP1, my user account was changed to standard user and many of the programs (including IE7) would not work properly AFTER I changed my user account back to Administrator. The other accounts that were Administrator and a new Administrator account would still not allow IE7 to work properly unless "run as Administrator". When I turn UAC off, the problems go away.

Don't download the latest updates from AVG, it will corrupt your AVG until they release a fixed version.

Windows Vista Home Premium I receive a message when attempting to delete any file or any action regading the Recycle Bin that reads: "The Recycle Bin on C: is corrupted. Do you want to empty the Recycle Bin for this drive?" There is a choice for Yes and No. When I choose "Yes" the notice posted that it is "Deleting 1 item (2.28 KB)" and the progress bar indicates activity. When I click on the "More information" button, I find it is indicating: Time remaining: Calculating...Items remaining: Discovered 1 item (2.28 KB)... Speed: Calculating...This morning I started the process and went out for breakfast. On my return an hour and one-half later it was still running. When I open the Recycle Bin, no items show, but the the dreaded messsages appears. I will close only when clicking the "No" button twice.

do not appear on the NG in Windows Live Mail on my computer. It was OK previously. I have unsubscribed the NG and then subscribed again. But still the same problem. But I see the msgs in the Sent Items folder. Tried sending thru:microsoft.public.windows.vista.mail
but still the same thing. I do not see the post in the NG, but it is there in the Sent Items folder. In both above cases, the posts can be seen in Google Groups from whereI have no choice but to post from. MY NGs may be corrupted.

I saw this problem addressed last year by Gary, but I didn't see it actually get corrected. My computer keeps giving me this prompt every few days,"THE MESSAGE STORE HAS BEEN CORRUPTED BY AN APPLICATION EXTERNAL TO WINDOWS MAIL. WINDOWS MAIL HAS BEEN ABLE TO SUCCESSFULLY RECOVER FROM THIS CORRUPTION.(0x00000000) Then it proceeds to restore all my deleted emails from the past few day, (at least 100) and starts adding new folders and dates. When they are recovered, they're headers only, no content in them. I had the Confiker Virus about 6 weeks ago and this seemed to start around the same time. This is really a pain having to delete all these messages...

Whenever i download a file such as .msi installer, .exe executable, or .zip archive with IE and run it, it crashes (not IE but the file that was downloaded.) This recently started happening on my Home Premium 64-bit Vista installation, and the problem remains after reinstalling Vista two times from scratch. If the file was downloaded on another PC and saved to a flash drive, it runs fine on Vista. I have tried the sfc /scannow command, as well as disabling any firewall, antivirus, etc. and changing the IE settings. This occurs on a clean installation of Windows Vista also. Here is the crash report, for example this time I was trying to install the FireFox installer after downloading it with IE:

have vista home basic x32 and have been having recycle bin problems for 2wks now. i have tried things listed here on links i found to fix recycle bin, dont work. i was told it could be my mcafee virus protection because its known to cause problems. i had some trojans and virus, but have since then gotten rid of it all completely, and at that time thats when the bin started acting up wont empty, shows its full on desktop and pic of it IN the bin folder shows its full/empty click to empty and hear the sound but nothing happens. i send stuff to the bin then i open the bin and nothing SHOWS that its there. yet if i click empty recycle bin box comes up and says are you sure you want to perm delete etc etc, so that shows there are files in there but nothing shows in the folder like i said its all a mess and there has to be a way to fix it cant i completely delete it and all that goes with it and start over with creating a new one?

I have an Dell XPS 420 which is overclocked (Q6700, 3,33 GHz) and lately vista has crashed all the times and I think it might be because of a corrupted file in windows. I tried to do a sfc /scannow however when it tries to repair the error, it gave me this message:
Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.
Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix
some of them.
Details are included in the CBS.Log windirLogsCBSCBS.log. For

I have also attached my reliability monitor graph and the scores aren't pretty good.

My laptop (Hp Pavilion dv6500 Notebook Pc) had a crash yesterday but after shutting it down and restarting it, all seemd to be normal. But today when I wanted to play some Generals I got a nasty suprise. I started up the game and I got a message saying I didn't have the right directx version. This is weird since I've been playing the game for almost a year now on this laptop. Anyway, I thought maybe something got corrupted after the crash. I startend another game just to make sure and it too gave me an error that I didn't had a proper directx version.
So I checked dxdiag and it said I had directx 10 as my latest version, which is what I had before the crash. I've updated all my drivers, reinstalled directx and reinstalled my games but nothing seems to work. I hope someone could point me out a direction that might help me fix this problem. I'm a student I seriously need my games for some relaxation .

I have Windows Mail, and Vista Home Premium. I send out a regular newsletter, in which there are many items, each having a title that is a hyperlink, with a bit of text below - so anyone wanting to read more on a particular topic can click on the link to get the whole story.
I copy the whole email many times, to send out in batches of perhaps 15 addresses (as I have been told this is better than sending out to hundreds at a time, to avoid being spam). In the first email, or even the first several, all the hyperlinks worked fine. I tested them using my own email, and another account I have on a different system.

Wondering if you guys can offer up some good advice. I have had my pcfor about 8 months, all was working fine until a couple of months ago when after some automatic updates and a reboot, windows failed to load. I got a black screen with the following message
file name : NTOSKRNL.exe
status : 0XC0000098
Windows failed to load because a required file is missing or corrupt: Then it advised me to reboot from the cd and repair the program. Which i did, and then instantly turned off automatic updates, as i didnt want to risk the same thing happening again. And it seemed to be working fine, for about 2 months i guess............

This is for Windows 64bit.. I can't decide which one to get. I go to product reviews on a couple different sites and there seems to be somewhat of a divide with users saying to go with Ghost and vice versa. I have never used Ghost before. So I can't personally say anything on it from experience. As for True Image, I am 1 for 1 on it. I managed to restore an image without any problems on one computer, but had a corrupted backup image on the other. So I'm not sure what buy now.

I was doing nothing other than typing up a word document when my laptop froze. I restarted it, and it froze at an earlier stage (after entering my password). In the top left corner of the screen a red rectange was appearing. It was bad. I tried restarting several more times and it would freeze at varying stages - mostly at pasword input and sometimes on making it to the windows desktop..................

since having installed 64 bit version, I'm experiencing a weird behaviour. Many downloaded raw files (*.cr2) from my Canon camera are corrupted when browsing them in the destination folder, but if I check them browsing the card they are not (and it's not a camera problem: no corrupted files when viewing images in camera). This happens with different cards and using different programs -viewers or editors. I suppose it's a Vista problem, perhaps a driver or codec issue, or perhaps connected to downloading (although I've also tried to copy them from the card and paste them in a desktop folder without using a downloader - Zoombrowser, Lightroom, ACDSee)

I am new to windows Vista, but have allready looked around a good bit and am certainly not a newbie on a computer. I have encountered an installation problem that just baffles me and I can't find any information on it. I want to install the Live Essential package with the wlsetup-web.exe from the download page for windows live. That would be as simple as to run the installer and done. Only this one pops up a small window. I have installed a lot of other programs, so it is not with every installer. I have this only with this installer. Does anybody know what the installation executable is looking for. I would like to add that the full package download also shows the same behavior. I have two installations of Windows Vista Home Premium x64 and on the second machine I have no problem installing the live applications. The simple conclusion is that the concerning Vista installation is corrupted in some way.

If you use Vista's built-in partition tool, do you risk deleting files? I used Easeus partition manager with an XP system. When I tried to restart, windows gave me "system32 hal.dll is missing or corrupted". I re-installed XP but I want to create a new partition on my Vista system so I can use Window 7 beta. Does this happen much when creating new partitions? I have had good luck with Easeus with two other systems. Am I better off using Vista's tool? Is there a chance I will loose a system file?

I recently purchased a Gateway laptop M-6888U that had no software disc provided. I was told by Bestbuy to simply backup my entire drive. I wish to know is there a way to make a recovery disc that WILL install a fresh copy of vista64 or am I screwed since everyone is trying to cut corners? I know I can make a recovery disc that works IF I have a working installation of my OS. My concern is if the drive gets corrupted and my OS needs to be reinstalled I'm screwed, with my only option being to purchase a new copy of Vista.

I receive automatic notification from the MSRC for upcoming Security Bulletin releases via their Windows Live Alert Service. I subscribe to the service with two different email accounts - Windows Mail and Windows Live Mail. This is the text content from the most recent MSRC advisory as received via Windows Mail; .....and this is the latest text content for the same advisory as received via Windows Live Mail [Hotmail]; As is clearly obvious, the text in the latter email is quite corrupted and unreadable. Is this an email account settings problem? It's got me beat. Incidentally, get ready for a load of Security updates, some critical, set for release Tuesday 8 June 2010 and affecting Windows, Windows Office and Internet Explorer.

I tried to install postgresql-8.4.0. I didn't turn off User Account Control before doing that, which seems to be recommended. I think Postgres tried to create a user account called 'postgres', but it failed (I suspect because of UAC). Postgres installation could not finish normally. When I look in the Control PanelUser Accounts, no 'postgres' user is visible. When I try to create a new user called 'postgres' however, I get the following error message:
Quote: The specified account name is not valid, because account names cannot contain the following characters: /[]":'|< >+=,?* Please type a different name. It looks like I'm stuck with a corrupted 'postgres' user. Is there a way to clean this up?

My computer freezes a couple of times a day and I have to manually restart. I have cleaned the fan and inside the pc but it still happens, Acer assures me that is not a memory problem. I believe the vista image is corrupted and there a lot of programs installed that I have to uninstall eg. Norton antivirus, Esobi and CD burning software. I have recently upgraded to windows 7 from Vista but it's still freezing, I haven't got a Vista disc as it was preinstalled by Acer.
I decided to upgrade as I didn't lose my settings maybe that wasn't the way to go! It could be the fan as it seemed a lot better in winter (I'm in Australia) but I didn't want to go to the expense of buying a new power supply if that didn't fix the problem. My computer is an Acer T690, Intel Dual core, 2.2 ghz. It is not under warranty any more as I voided that by installing '7'

I currently have XP installed however it seems to be a corrupted install as software, i.e. Internet Explorer, downloaded software, etc, gets uninstalled and won't work everytime I turn off the PC. I was wondering do I need to purchase the full version of Vista Basic or can I use the upgrade. I have read on one website that the upgrade won't work but on another website it states that corruptions will be repaired with the upgrade.
