Can Delete The System Folders/files

Feb 6, 2009

I am not trying to move system files or folders. I am trying to move folders/files I created and copied over from my XP machine. When I check the properties they are read only. So I unswitch them get warned and as soon as I look at them again they are back to read-only. I have admin permissions so not sure what the problem is. I can delete the folders/files but I want to reorganize them. Is there a "Not a Newbie" version of Vista or maybe a tweak?

How To Delete A System File In Windows

Mar 26, 2008

If you need to delete or overwrite a system file in Windows Vista, you'll quickly notice that you cannot delete system files, even as administrator. This is because Windows Vista's system files are owned by the TrustedInstaller service by default, and Windows File Protection will keep them from being overwritten. You need to take ownership of the files, and then assign yourself rights to delete or modify the file. For this, we'll use the command line.

Open an administrator command prompt by typing cmd into the start menu search box, and hit the Ctrl+Shift+Enter key combination. To take ownership of the file, you'll need to use the takeown command. Here's an example: takeown /f C:WindowsSystem32en-USwinload.exe.mui That will give you ownership of the file, but you still have no rights to delete it. Now you can run the cacls command to give yourself full control rights to the file: cacls C:WindowsSystem32en-USwinload.exe.mui /G geek:F Note that my username is geek, so you will substitute your username there. At this point, you should be able to delete the file. If you still can't do so, you may need to reboot into Safe Mode and try it again. For the filename in the example, I was able to overwrite it without safe mode, but your mileage may vary.

System Configuration : Delete The Statrup Tab

How To Delete / Replace A System File

Feb 11, 2007

In many of the tweaks on this site I have directed you to delete or replace a system file. In Windows Vista this is not always as easy as it sounds since the system files are protected better by the file system than in XP. There are two steps that you need to do in order to be able to replace or delete a system file:First you need to take ownership of the file. Run takeown /f  "path and file name" to take ownership from a command prompt.Next, you need to give your account full control permissions on the file. Run cacls "path and file name" /G <your username>:F to get full control from a command prompt....

Delete System Restore Points Except Recent

Feb 13, 2009

I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop that has about 20 System Restore points and I am trying to delete all but the most recent to free up disk space.

When I go to Disk Cleanup and select the option to do so, everything seems to work OK, but when it's finished there is no recovered disk space and the 20 Restore points still appear when I go to System Restore. I have tried starting the computer in Safe Mode and attempting the cleanup, but the same thing happens - the Disk Cleanup routine runs without error, but there is no recovered disk space and the 20 restore points still appear in System Restore.

Since I was getting nowhere with Disk Cleanup, I decided to go to System protection and turn off the system restore on the hard drive, which is supposed to delete all the restore points. I removed the checkmark next to the drive to remove System Restore, got the warning that I was about to remove System Restore and delete all the restore points and told it to go ahead and it finished. The same thing however, no recovered disk space and all the restore points still exist in System Restore. I turned System Restore back on by re-checking the box.

2. Delete C.
3. Rename F "C".
4. Expand F (the new "C") to include the old C.

Visat Delete Specific System Restore Points

Jun 8, 2008

New pc, Vista Home premium + SP1 reload, close to final set-up. There's a user-labelled System Restore point dated 1st June (which I want to keep) plus a series of daily restore points, system generated (presumably during/after installation of new progs or updates) then a further user-labelled restore point, 6th June (user-labelled, i.e. "SP1 loaded"). QUESTION how to delete the "daily restore points" in-between? Reason - 1st June is a "clean" system with SP1. The latest is a "clean" system with other progs loaded. I don't need the "in-between" ones, keeping them will eventually wipe the original from memory ("fifo" when space becomes critical).

Access User Controls Delete A Folder Not Allowed System Rolled Back

I am so tired of all of the, what appear to be, bugs with this new system. The irritating pop-ups everytime I want to do something (like access user controls, delete a folder, etc.) that want confirmation. Unfortunately I purchased this comptuer with Vista Home installed. Is there a way to just install XP Home back on this thing? I have tried with the XP Home CD and it appears that it will not allow the system to be rolled back.

Recycle Bin On C: Is Corrupted

Feb 22, 2009

Windows Vista Home Premium I receive a message when attempting to delete any file or any action regading the Recycle Bin that reads: "The Recycle Bin on C: is corrupted. Do you want to empty the Recycle Bin for this drive?" There is a choice for Yes and No. When I choose "Yes" the notice posted that it is "Deleting 1 item (2.28 KB)" and the progress bar indicates activity. When I click on the "More information" button, I find it is indicating: Time remaining: Calculating...Items remaining: Discovered 1 item (2.28 KB)... Speed: Calculating...This morning I started the process and went out for breakfast. On my return an hour and one-half later it was still running. When I open the Recycle Bin, no items show, but the the dreaded messsages appears. I will close only when clicking the "No" button twice.

Corrupted Windows Mail

I saw this problem addressed last year by Gary, but I didn't see it actually get corrected. My computer keeps giving me this prompt every few days,"THE MESSAGE STORE HAS BEEN CORRUPTED BY AN APPLICATION EXTERNAL TO WINDOWS MAIL. WINDOWS MAIL HAS BEEN ABLE TO SUCCESSFULLY RECOVER FROM THIS CORRUPTION.(0x00000000) Then it proceeds to restore all my deleted emails from the past few day, (at least 100) and starts adding new folders and dates. When they are recovered, they're headers only, no content in them. I had the Confiker Virus about 6 weeks ago and this seemed to start around the same time. This is really a pain having to delete all these messages...

Downloaded Files Are Corrupted

Feb 1, 2008

Whenever i download a file such as .msi installer, .exe executable, or .zip archive with IE and run it, it crashes (not IE but the file that was downloaded.) This recently started happening on my Home Premium 64-bit Vista installation, and the problem remains after reinstalling Vista two times from scratch. If the file was downloaded on another PC and saved to a flash drive, it runs fine on Vista. I have tried the sfc /scannow command, as well as disabling any firewall, antivirus, etc. and changing the IE settings. This occurs on a clean installation of Windows Vista also. Here is the crash report, for example this time I was trying to install the FireFox installer after downloading it with IE:

Corrupted Directx And Crash

Oct 12, 2008

My laptop (Hp Pavilion dv6500 Notebook Pc) had a crash yesterday but after shutting it down and restarting it, all seemd to be normal. But today when I wanted to play some Generals I got a nasty suprise. I started up the game and I got a message saying I didn't have the right directx version. This is weird since I've been playing the game for almost a year now on this laptop. Anyway, I thought maybe something got corrupted after the crash. I startend another game just to make sure and it too gave me an error that I didn't had a proper directx version.

So I checked dxdiag and it said I had directx 10 as my latest version, which is what I had before the crash. I've updated all my drivers, reinstalled directx and reinstalled my games but nothing seems to work. I hope someone could point me out a direction that might help me fix this problem. I'm a student I seriously need my games for some relaxation .

Hyperlinks Being Corrupted In Emails

Feb 26, 2010

I have Windows Mail, and Vista Home Premium. I send out a regular newsletter, in which there are many items, each having a title that is a hyperlink, with a bit of text below - so anyone wanting to read more on a particular topic can click on the link to get the whole story.

I copy the whole email many times, to send out in batches of perhaps 15 addresses (as I have been told this is better than sending out to hundreds at a time, to avoid being spam). In the first email, or even the first several, all the hyperlinks worked fine. I tested them using my own email, and another account I have on a different system.

Windows Updates Corrupted

Sep 10, 2008

Wondering if you guys can offer up some good advice. I have had my pcfor about 8 months, all was working fine until a couple of months ago when after some automatic updates and a reboot, windows failed to load. I got a black screen with the following message

file name : NTOSKRNL.exe
status : 0XC0000098

Windows failed to load because a required file is missing or corrupt: Then it advised me to reboot from the cd and repair the program. Which i did, and then instantly turned off automatic updates, as i didnt want to risk the same thing happening again. And it seemed to be working fine, for about 2 months i guess............
