how do u tell if a file is corrupted or altered?
I was contacted by a admin 4 a program after i said i had problems with there product and they told me 2 contact a tec. 2 fix my corrupted or altered file.
I am trying to change my hosts file so I don't allow access to a particular site. In the process I accidentally changed the extension of the orignal HOSTS file, it is now a .org file and I cannot find a way to get rid of the extension. There are no previous versions to restore to, and renaming no longer changes the file type. How can I either create a new HOSTS file, or restore the orginal one?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI had tried to move a file from another folder to my desktop. File move was taking forever and I had cancelled out. But it created a file on my desktop which is corrupted and the original file is corrupted (neither will open). I cannot delete this file from my desktop or other location now and it has seemed to slow down my PC. When I try to delete, I get a popup box that says "Recycling 1 item... from Desktop, Discovered 0 items (0 bytes)" and it just stays in an neverending do loop. After looking on internet, I have seen that Vista has issues deleting or even moving files.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a corrupted System32 file on windows Vista. I tried to boot from the windows 7 disk and also from the windows XP disk to do a clean install. This doesn't work however, I set the boot in BIOS to cddrive so I don't see the problem. does someone know how I can instal windows 7 or windows XP on my corrupted Vista?

Pre-requisites:
1) Windows XP Pro (installed on Hard drive C)
2) Two hard drives (C and D)
Steps:
1) Bootup computer with Vistax64 DVD
2) Choose Install Now option
3) Select C Drive
4) Format C Drive
5) Complete installation on C Drive
6) Install drivers from Gigabyte CD for LAN, Sound, SATA drivers, etc
7) Attempt to access hard drive D
Can't access hard drive D, even though it was never touched by anyone. Everytime I double click I get the error message: "D: is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable." Note: The HDD is not dying, its brand new and was accessed literally an hour ago without any problems. All my important documents are in there, I need to recover them. I have an external HDD ready, but cannot access the drive!
On my laptop I triple boot: Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit, Windows XP Professional 32-bit and Ubuntu 8.10 64-bit. Recently, I had problems booting WIndows XP so I wanted to fix it by using VistaBootPRO but I ended by losing both WIndows Vista & XP. Now, only Ubuntu works so I can still access Vista & XP drives. On VistaBootPRO I installed Legancy Bootloader over Windows Vista Bootloader then I was not able to boot Vista. I got this error message:

I have been using my Windows Mail for a little while now and am pretty much there in terms of understanding it. However, at work I use Outlook Express and there are a few things that I like from it that I am unsure whether Windows Mail has or if I am just not finding them. The main thing is:
I colour code messages (categorise them) by descriptions I have altered them to, for example, if I select pink, this is known as 'awaiting others actions' and if I select blue this is 'Needs further attention by me' or purple meaning 'completed'. Does Windows Mail have this option anywhere at all so that I can colour my inbox messages until I have dealt with them all fully. I would be greatful for any advice about this.
i have a dell xps m1530 with vista home premium 32 bit (SP1). i recently tried to update to SP2 and ran into problems multiple times. i have tried installing both from windows update and from a separate file downloaded from the internet, and both times the installation aborted itself, saying either "error code B7" or "the file or directory is corrupted and unreadable". i've tried both re-downloading the file and turning off my security software, but neither has had any effect. has anyone else had this problem/know what i should do? i'd really like to update to SP2.
View 6 Replies View RelatedAfter installing SP1, my user account was changed to standard user and many of the programs (including IE7) would not work properly AFTER I changed my user account back to Administrator. The other accounts that were Administrator and a new Administrator account would still not allow IE7 to work properly unless "run as Administrator". When I turn UAC off, the problems go away.

Do you want to empty the Recycle Bin for this drive?" There is a choice for Yes and No. When I choose "Yes" the notice posted that it is "Deleting 1 item (2.28 KB)" and the progress bar indicates activity. When I click on the "More information" button, I find it is indicating: Time remaining: Calculating...Items remaining: Discovered 1 item (2.28 KB)... Speed: Calculating...This morning I started the process and went out for breakfast. On my return an hour and one-half later it was still running. When I open the Recycle Bin, no items show, but the the dreaded messsages appears. I will close only when clicking the "No" button twice.

but still the same thing. I do not see the post in the NG, but it is there in the Sent Items folder. In both above cases, the posts can be seen in Google Groups from whereI have no choice but to post from. MY NGs may be corrupted.
I saw this problem addressed last year by Gary, but I didn't see it actually get corrected. My computer keeps giving me this prompt every few days,"THE MESSAGE STORE HAS BEEN CORRUPTED BY AN APPLICATION EXTERNAL TO WINDOWS MAIL. WINDOWS MAIL HAS BEEN ABLE TO SUCCESSFULLY RECOVER FROM THIS CORRUPTION.(0x00000000) Then it proceeds to restore all my deleted emails from the past few day, (at least 100) and starts adding new folders and dates. When they are recovered, they're headers only, no content in them. I had the Confiker Virus about 6 weeks ago and this seemed to start around the same time. View 9 Replies View RelatedWhenever i download a file such as .msi installer, .exe executable, or .zip archive with IE and run it, it crashes (not IE but the file that was downloaded.) This recently started happening on my Home Premium 64-bit Vista installation, and the problem remains after reinstalling Vista two times from scratch. If the file was downloaded on another PC and saved to a flash drive, it runs fine on Vista. I have tried the sfc /scannow command, as well as disabling any firewall, antivirus, etc. and changing the IE settings. This occurs on a clean installation of Windows Vista also. View 9 Replies View Relatedhave vista home basic x32 and have been having recycle bin problems for 2wks now. i have tried things listed here on links i found to fix recycle bin, dont work. i was told it could be my mcafee virus protection because its known to cause problems. i had some trojans and virus, but have since then gotten rid of it all completely, and at that time thats when the bin started acting up wont empty, shows its full on desktop and pic of it IN the bin folder shows its full/empty click to empty and hear the sound but nothing happens. i send stuff to the bin then i open the bin and nothing SHOWS that its there. yet if i click empty recycle bin box comes up and says are you sure you want to perm delete etc etc, so that shows there are files in there but nothing shows in the folder like i said its all a mess and there has to be a way to fix it cant i completely delete it and all that goes with it and start over with creating a new one?

My laptop (Hp Pavilion dv6500 Notebook Pc) had a crash yesterday but after shutting it down and restarting it, all seemd to be normal. But today when I wanted to play some Generals I got a nasty suprise. I started up the game and I got a message saying I didn't have the right directx version. This is weird since I've been playing the game for almost a year now on this laptop. Anyway, I thought maybe something got corrupted after the crash. I startend another game just to make sure and it too gave me an error that I didn't had a proper directx version.
So I checked dxdiag and it said I had directx 10 as my latest version, which is what I had before the crash. I've updated all my drivers, reinstalled directx and reinstalled my games but nothing seems to work. I hope someone could point me out a direction that might help me fix this problem. I'm a student I seriously need my games for some relaxation .
My IE has some how been corrupted and now will not work no matter what i do, is there a way i can delete it and re install it? I have admin access and it still would not let me delete ie from my pc?

I send out a regular newsletter, in which there are many items, each having a title that is a hyperlink, with a bit of text below - so anyone wanting to read more on a particular topic can click on the link to get the whole story.
I copy the whole email many times, to send out in batches of perhaps 15 addresses (as I have been told this is better than sending out to hundreds at a time, to avoid being spam). In the first email, or even the first several, all the hyperlinks worked fine. I tested them using my own email, and another account I have on a different system.
Wondering if you guys can offer up some good advice. I have had my pcfor about 8 months, all was working fine until a couple of months ago when after some automatic updates and a reboot, windows failed to load. I got a black screen with the following message

I have been having problems with things just changing themselves I have run avira antivirus with latest updates and spybot pc tools with latest update and found nothing. I go to product reviews on a couple different sites and there seems to be somewhat of a divide with users saying to go with Ghost and vice versa. I have never used Ghost before. So I can't personally say anything on it from experience. As for True Image, I am 1 for 1 on it. I managed to restore an image without any problems on one computer, but had a corrupted backup image on the other. So I'm not sure what buy now.
