Windows Update Failure: The File Or Directory Is Corrupted And Unreadable
Jun 18, 2008
I am running Vista Home Premium 32 bit without service pack 1 and have been trying to download windows updates for about a month now. I get a Windows Update error message 8007000b. I ran the command prompt as administrator, typed in fsutil resource setautoreset true C:. And I get a message saying “The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable”
I have tried to download updates 1 at a time, turned off my anti virus And tried manual updates as well. My Error checking is not working “windows can’t check the disk while it’s in use” And schedule disk check does not work. The System File Checker tool gives the message “windows resource protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them”. The windows memory diagnostic tool runs, reboots and does not display any results
I did exactly the following steps to get this error:
Pre-requisites: 1) Windows XP Pro (installed on Hard drive C) 2) Two hard drives (C and D)
Steps: 1) Bootup computer with Vistax64 DVD 2) Choose Install Now option 3) Select C Drive 4) Format C Drive 5) Complete installation on C Drive 6) Install drivers from Gigabyte CD for LAN, Sound, SATA drivers, etc 7) Attempt to access hard drive D
Can't access hard drive D, even though it was never touched by anyone. Everytime I double click I get the error message: "D: is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable." Note: The HDD is not dying, its brand new and was accessed literally an hour ago without any problems. All my important documents are in there, I need to recover them. I have an external HDD ready, but cannot access the drive!
i have a dell xps m1530 with vista home premium 32 bit (SP1). i recently tried to update to SP2 and ran into problems multiple times. i have tried installing both from windows update and from a separate file downloaded from the internet, and both times the installation aborted itself, saying either "error code B7" or "the file or directory is corrupted and unreadable". i've tried both re-downloading the file and turning off my security software, but neither has had any effect. has anyone else had this problem/know what i should do? i'd really like to update to SP2.
- I keep getting an error notification every second : autoit v3 regsvr.exe - Corrupt File The file or directory /FOUND.000 is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility. Its very distracting and I ran the check disk utility and still no change.
HI i posted a problem that I have with explorer.exe not with iexplorer Bill, please help because i can not open a file in any directory that explorer.exe restarts ant it close me all the windows.
I have a corrupted System32 file on windows Vista. I tried to boot from the windows 7 disk and also from the windows XP disk to do a clean install. This doesn't work however, I set the boot in BIOS to cddrive so I don't see the problem. does someone know how I can instal windows 7 or windows XP on my corrupted Vista?
when I try and log into my laptop, at the first screen where you see your user name and then you are asked to type your password, I type my password and get the following message: The file or directoryWindowsAppPatch is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility.
From looking at other threads they say go into the start menu etc... however I cant even get that far. The message for me appears at the initial startup screen when I select my user name and where i type in my password. I dont have a disc for Vista so i can't reinstall it.
On my laptop I triple boot: Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit, Windows XP Professional 32-bit and Ubuntu 8.10 64-bit. Recently, I had problems booting WIndows XP so I wanted to fix it by using VistaBootPRO but I ended by losing both WIndows Vista & XP. Now, only Ubuntu works so I can still access Vista & XP drives. On VistaBootPRO I installed Legancy Bootloader over Windows Vista Bootloader then I was not able to boot Vista. I got this error message:
Code: Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupted: <WIndows root>system32 toskrnl.exe Please re-install a copy of the above file.
My computer was working properly, then I had a power problem, my computer turned off and turned on again. Now my windows doesn't open. When I try to open I receive this message: Windows failed to start. File:windowssystem32configsystem Status:0xc000014c Info: Windows failed to load because the system registry file is missing or corrupted.
Need to fix it without losing my files.I have a restore cd, but I dont want to use it, because I can't lose my files. The cd doesnt has the choice to repair windows.Just restore it. I am using Windows vista premium and my computer is Aspire E380 (Acer) It has C: and D: partition, but I dont know if it is 32 or 64 I already use all steps in F8 screen, safe mode....last configuration...anything didn't work.
My Confusions : 1.) A week ago Brink said SP1 was not available through Windows Update( WU ), while at the same time .Joe indicated it was available in website and WU. ( I read those threads .) 2.) Someone said something about driver not upgraded and therefore it was not offered in the WU for those users. Does that mean I'm one of those? 3.) .Joe said that there are 2 prequisites for installing SP1 (it's from the same thread I mentioned .) a) First prerequsite includes updates to the servicing stack, which I never saw it in WU. b) 2nd includes updates required to reliably install or uninstall the service pack, which I never saw in WU either. 4.) We all saw the " horror stories " posted in this forum regarding problems during installing and after installing SP1. It got me worried. 5.) I still do not see SP1 offered in WU, optional or otherwise.
I had tried to move a file from another folder to my desktop. File move was taking forever and I had cancelled out. But it created a file on my desktop which is corrupted and the original file is corrupted (neither will open). I cannot delete this file from my desktop or other location now and it has seemed to slow down my PC. When I try to delete, I get a popup box that says "Recycling 1 item... from Desktop, Discovered 0 items (0 bytes)" and it just stays in an neverending do loop. After looking on internet, I have seen that Vista has issues deleting or even moving files.
I was contacted by a admin 4 a program after i said i had problems with there product and they told me 2 contact a tec. 2 fix my corrupted or altered file.

I ran the critical update (Vista) and it wiped out the desktop, leaving a blank slate. Each time I restart there is a lenghty message in Chinese with "ok" as the only option. I ran system restore to get back to the time just before this update, which restored my desktop. I am convinced that this update is buggy and should not be installed without a deep backup in place. It works fine with XP but not with Vista in my set of machines. How can this be reported to Microsoft? Or am I doing something wrong? The system is completely legal and registered.
my computer is a Toshiba Satellite, and it will not install updates or shutdown properly. When I try to shut it down properly it says configuring updates I left it like this for a couple of hours and it made no difference. I am writing this thread on it now, and it runs perfectly other than the updates. It has flashed me a Blue Screen twice, and has never had this problem before. I need to know any Solutions before I completely wipe this partition and install XP.
I had to reinstall all of my software due to a corrupted system file. After re-installing Microsoft Office, I am having difficulty with getting my Microsoft Frontpage re-installed. How do I get this program re-installed?
When I downloaded the Windows Easy Transfer utility for a 32 bit version of Windows Vista (Windows6.0-KB928635-x86) for file transfers to Windows 7 it will not install. I receive an error message that says, "The update does not apply to your system." But my system is a 32 bit version of Vista. I am trying to get prepared for my Windows 7 version that will arrive in October. Does anyone have any idea why I would be getting this error message?
I installed the vista 64 system updates. I found that this caused my system update to fail. upon using these forums I found that others with this issue, could not get this to be fixed, without reinstalling/repairing of the operating system..
what I found was microsoft office SP2 was the cause of the problem..the trusted installer was missing in the windows servicing folder....
There is what looks to be a November 08 update to DirectX, but on three different machines I have not been able to get the dxwebsetup.exe to work. Every time I run the executable I get “Installing components: Initializing…”, then “Setup could not download the file. Please retry later or check network connection”. The redistributable is still showing Aug. 08.
I have done a "clean" reinstall of Vista Ultimate two days ago and everything is running exceptionally well on this machine. So I feel a little guilty nit-picking about one update that continues to fail. It is KB947562 that fails with an error code of 8024200D.
I have a brand new clean install of Vista Ultimate running on a machine. Every day it tries and fails to load KB947562. It throws error code:8024200D. Anyone know what is going wrong?
So today I'm enjoying my 2 day old Vista. I've had a crappy 2003 Compaq XP for EVER now, and I was happy to get a new computer, completely crappy OS or not. (Yes, I've heard the rumors about Vista, so I was prepared for lots and lots of hours of troubleshooting!) I want to look around and explore, so I click on my start menu. Nothing. The My Computer, Control Panel, etc etc etc is on there. But nothing. I click 'all programs', and it's all there. I tried to modify the settings on my start menu, I pressed OK and out of curiosity went back into my Start Menu settings to check-- And they were back to what they were before!!
My easy way out has always been, since my XP was crap, to completely restore my computer, suck it up, reinstall everything and start fresh. So I decided to add a new WinRAR .rar folder thing, put all my pictures in there, put it on Megaupload.com and download the file after I restore Vista. I right clicked. Went under 'New > (Empty)'.
I almost cried! My baby, my brand new vista, already encountering problems! I installed daemon tools, PHotoshop CS2, poweriso, AIM, itunes, basically my necessities, within the two day period. I turned my computer on, no problems. My norton preformed its scheduled scan this morning at 6am, and I had a trojan horse and it can't be repaired. I've had thousands of those on my old computer and it ran at full speed with no problems, but could this be the reason? I restarted it two, three hours ago so my daemon tools can finish installing, and that's when I realized my start menu and things were messed up. Also, when I went into my computer after I restarted, the theme was set on 'windows classic', my background was left untouched. I cannot drag and drop anything into the start menu. It says I can, but I can't. Desktop icons are fine. I also installed 16 or so updates because I guess my Vista isn't up to date-- It did it automatically. Also, links, pictures, etc, like 'My Computer', My 'C:' drive, 'My Pictures', pictures, music, etc in Folders, have a check mark beside them.
My vista desktop did an auto restart on its on last night and began 'updating' I left it on and went to bed. This morning it was stuck on 'shutting down' I did a hard reset and restarted in save network mode. After the normal dos info on safe mode setup I got a screen saying 'configuring updates'. After about 15 minutes it went to shutting down and its been over 2 hours shutting down. I have no idea what 'updates' it is trying to install. My guess is whatever came out on Tuesday as I use auto update/download. I am using an older xp machine to write this question. The vista machine was bought with vista ultimate installed in March of 07. It is a dual core intel 2.4. I have had no problems with update until today.
Windows Vista includes a great little utility that allows users to finally make soft and hard file system links in the file system. This can be very useful from a software compatibility standpoint as well as a great way to organize your computer. Unlike a shortcut, a link is at the file system level and can be used to create an alias for a file or folder that is in a different location. For example, you can create a hard link (Directory junction) called c:win that points to c:windowssystem32. After the link is created, you can open up command prompt or explorer and browse to c:win and you will see the contents of c:windowssystem32. This is not a new technology, it has actually been a core Linux and Unix feature for as far as I can remember but it is nice to finally have it in Windows Vista....
I have been trying to upgrade from Windows XP Tablet Edition to Vista Ultimate on my Travelmate C300 laptop. I have found the following error file after the install fails in the location: C:$WINDOWS.~BTSourcesPanther The file is called: setuperr.log The content is quite long but i will post it here -decipher it and advise how i can upgrade to Vista?

Under Unix a logged in user can print to a printer with the lpr command. What happens is that the print job goes to a special directory on the Unix operating system's filesystem such directory known as a spool directory. From the spool directory the job goes into the printer's memory from which it is printed. When a printer is turned off its RAM is cleared so that it does looses knowledge of such jobs when it is turned on. However, under Unix whatever was in the spool directory remains there and if you power off the computer and then back on it keeps sending it to the printer. Now, I don't know what the equivalent of a spool directory under Unix is called under Windows, but I would like to clear it by cancelling all print jobs from the user I am logged into. So how do I cancel print jobs under Windows Vista Home Premium SP1? This would save me lots of wasted ink and paper,
I saw this problem addressed last year by Gary, but I didn't see it actually get corrected. My computer keeps giving me this prompt every few days,"THE MESSAGE STORE HAS BEEN CORRUPTED BY AN APPLICATION EXTERNAL TO WINDOWS MAIL. WINDOWS MAIL HAS BEEN ABLE TO SUCCESSFULLY RECOVER FROM THIS CORRUPTION.(0x00000000) Then it proceeds to restore all my deleted emails from the past few day, (at least 100) and starts adding new folders and dates. When they are recovered, they're headers only, no content in them. I had the Confiker Virus about 6 weeks ago and this seemed to start around the same time. This is really a pain having to delete all these messages...
Wondering if you guys can offer up some good advice. I have had my pcfor about 8 months, all was working fine until a couple of months ago when after some automatic updates and a reboot, windows failed to load. I got a black screen with the following message
file name : NTOSKRNL.exe status : 0XC0000098
Windows failed to load because a required file is missing or corrupt: Then it advised me to reboot from the cd and repair the program. Which i did, and then instantly turned off automatic updates, as i didnt want to risk the same thing happening again. And it seemed to be working fine, for about 2 months i guess............
