i was just about to think of backing up my files to save everything in case of some disaster so i inserted a blank disk then i was wondering how big the back up files would be on a disk i have a 584GB hard drive with about 116 GB used could you roughly guess how big the back up file would be? because if i know , i will know how much CD-RW's i will need for this.

I had made a format for my computer and i followed all the instructions and i made backup for my files and everything (the users files ) and when i tryed to reput them on my computer it didnt open i tryed to use easy transfar and restore back up but it didnt work so if anyone can help me i will be greatfull to all
BTW the folders name on the flash disk is (MINWINPC) but their is no nmae on the files or exetentions .

View 7 Replies View RelatedI've had for the last 2-3 days: There's an FTP that I need access to to move files back and forth between co-workers. I use Windows Explorer to access this, normally with no issues.....just type in the ftp address, and there it is. Now whenever I do this, I get an error: This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel.
I went into the Set Associations control panel, but don't know what extension to change, as it's not really a "file", and there's no mention anywhere of FTP. Everyone else that uses the FTP doesn't have an issue, so it's not a problem with the ftp itself.
The Windows Vista Home Premium on my new ASUS laptop has aquired a new form of weirdness lately. I keep it updated as the updates from Microsoft come in, and for about three weeks now, I see the following two erratic behaviours: Files I delete from my desktop return from oblivion upon the next reboot. Doesn't matter if I throw them in the bin, clear out the bin afterwards, or even use shift-delete to bypass the bin altogether: next reboot I have about a 50-50 change of seeing them pop up on my desktop again. And it seems to happen somewhere around the time the boot process is complete. I have not tested this in other directories, but will do so if you think it is relevant.

How auto back up my documents, pictures & music to the external hard drive. On my old laptop (running XP), I used to have a "briefcase" in my external hard drive. Every time that was connected, it would automatically add any new files in the briefcase (in this case, music). I am constantly downloading new music & etc. so it's a tedious task to manually back up these files.

I also can see the hidden file, its size, and the name of the file but the warning states it cannot be opened because the path has been changed or altered. I still see that the user has many files, and I do not seem to have gained any disk space...is it still possible to get these back.

I was working on my laptop earlier this evening moving a few files around and organising my folders when I lost a few files from a folder. I don't know exactly what happened, I probably mashed the touch pad. Anyway, now I can't find the files anymore. I've tried running a search but it has come to no avail. How do I find my files? If it makes any difference the files were on a memory stick.
View 9 Replies View RelatedWhile installing a program, the process was interrupted and the install created 62000 files using 160gig in my syswow64 folder virtually using all my hd space. However when you go into the syswow64 folder, there is only about 2000 files and 1 gig of space used. I have set the folders to show all hidden files. When I go into the ms dos prompt and do a directory, the files match the 1 gig data.
I can't delete these 62000 files and free up the 160 gig space because I don't believe they are actually there on the hard drive but explorer thinks they are there. Is there any way to rebuild, sync, or otherwise get windows explorer to recognize the correct amount of files that are actually in my syswow64 folder.(2000files 1gig and not 62000files 160gig)

I have XP installed with SP3 and everything runs so well, my CPU runs so cooler for some reason, all my games, even Crysis run so better! AND, what? All my music and everything was on my xp partition, and when i tried to access them from vista it wouldnt let me because of permission rights. I enabled vista to read them by enabling me as an admin under the security tab. After than it was fine. Then after getting pretty frustrated with vista I just deleted the partition in XP. Thinking everthing would be fine, I booted my comp. and it still wants to boot to vista, but theres nothing there. I want it to just go straight to XP. And also, since I made it to where I could read my files in vista, I cant read My Documents in XP, it says I dont have the right to read it, but I am the one and only admin on XP. .

Anyway, there are a couple of files in the folder that are, apparently, not really there. They are like ghost files. They used to exist but now they are still visible but not recognized by any program. Also, they have a size of 0 kb!
I'd like to get rid of them but they refuse to be deleted. When I try to delete them, I get this:

Miscellaneous sub-folders within folders have disappeared, while other sub-folders remain intact. At first I was completely lost, as the files were there not 30 minutes prior... After assuming the worst and thinking that they had corrupted or been deleted due to a virus, I:
- Made sure my folder options were set properly (I can view all hidden files)
- Thoroughly checked the recycle bin
- Did numerous searches
- Downloaded Google Desktop and searched some more
- Ran various "undelete" and "recovery" programs with no results
- Did a system restore...........
I bought a new computer for college recently and I cannot download limewire. Everytime I try I get an error message that says "....can't open input files because of splittet files." I have no idea how to circumvent this.

Also if a file backup completes successfully and is backed up on a network drive will I be able to restore from a new install of window vista premium on the same laptop that was backed up to the network drive? Is there a better way using vista premium? I have Norton Ghost 12.0 on my desktop but not on the laptop with vista premium. Don't what to have to buy a license for laptop if there is another way to make sure in case of a failure of the operating system that I could recover by an full backup or image ? View 9 Replies View RelatedI turned it off to install a program because it required the UAC to be off, not I try and turn it on by going Control Panel > User Accounts > Turn User Account Control on or off > Continue > then ticking the box and pressing OK. I pressed Turn User Account Control on or off > Continue and find that it is not ticked and UAC is NOT on. I keep ticking the box and going OK but it just doesn't turn on.

The Backup did not complete succesfully
CATASTROPHIC FAILURE (0x8000FFFF).
So then if i try and do a a back up from control panel. a green bar appears and then go's red completely.
Finaly i get the same message on the bottom right hand side.
After 4 months of fighting Vista Home Premium, I am done. Have you gone back to XP and do you have any regrets?
