Because of a mistake I made while installing Vista, I wound up with the system files (about 1.6 Gig) on one small D: drive while all of the remaining Windows files (over 50 Gig) on the large C: drive. I now want to remove the D: drive and replace it with a large one. How do I move the system files to the C: drive?
I have a brand new HP Pavilion desktop and the first two days it gave me blue screens of death. Subsequently I had an expert look at the .dmp files and Windows/System logs that show the unrecoverable events and he said that it clearly shows a -hardware -problem and that I should tell HP and get a new computer. (I have had it just 4 days longer than Best Buy's return policy was in effect because I did not figure out how serious the problem was until 2 days ago. I had been thinking it was just a conflict with my monitor or something but this guy says the .dmp files show that it is a memory or processor problem and cannot be fixed.)
I spent 3 and 1/2 hours online in a chat session with an IDIOT supervisor in India and he did not fully understand the problem and kept preaching "System Restore". I kept saying that -System Restore will not fix a Hardware problem- so there was no point to it. He finally came up with this: "sir, the processor sends some IRQ requests etc to other hardware devices, and the log suggests me that theres a conflick in such IRQ requests." Even so, how is System Restore going to FIX a hardware problem that already exists???..........
While dealing with tech support from a peripherals company regarding a mouse problem, they had me check for certain system files, and we determined that several appeared to missing, including input.inf, msmouse.inf, and hidusd.sys. Someone suggested I use System File Checker (sfc / scannow), but this did not restore the files, and give error messages telling me that there were corrupted files but they could not be repaired. what might have happened to these files (and any others that might also be missing) and more importantly, how can I get them back.
I have tons of pictures, schools papers, etc. on my computer, and I want to keep the files, but reformat my system aka get it back to factory condition. What are my best options? Anything goes, except I dont have an external harddrive which Is what i would like to do. I do have dvds, and cds, and 4gb flash drive, and 4gb and 1gb sd cards... Maybe partition my hardrive or something... I don't know I'm asking the experts!
i was in a process of removing virus on a customer's computer. I ran MBAM and superantispyware to remove lots of trojans and spywares and then i ran a boot scan from avast and it removed lots of infected system files like msconfig, cmd.exe, notepad, taskmgr.exe, etc. Now the scan is complete and there's no virus left on the computer. But now when i type cmd.exe in RUN, i get an error saying that Windows cannot find RUN & so on. Is there a way to get those missing system files?

I did something stupid with my system, and I really want to get it fixed basically I followed this instruction to install the new theme files.
'VistaOSX '09 Uninstall by =patrickgs on deviantART' (http://patrickgs.deviantart.com/art/VistaOSX-09-Uninstall-100318778)
I restarted my system after the 3rd step now my system is missing authui.dll browseui.dll imageres.dll shsvcs.dll themeui.dll uxtheme.dll
the files still exist in my system32 folder, just under a backup filename now whenever i start my system (i tried safe mood and command prompt),it will always end up in a black screen with my white mouse pointer.I can go into the system recovery options fine, but there no system restore points exists.
I have had a Windows 2000 system connected to a Vista system thru a router. I have several shares defined on the Windows 2000 system. No shares are defined on the Vista system. On 28 April 2009, I replaced NIS 2008 with KIS 2008 on the Vista system. On 23 June 2009, I noticed that the Vista system could no longer COPY files from the Windows 2000 sysyem to the Vista system, tho I could still open the files.
I know that, on 19/20 June 2009, the Vista system copied files from the Windows 2000 system. So something broke after that. As I recall, there was a Windows update installed on 23 June 2009. Perhaps, that update changed some settings? What do I need to look for
I cannot do System Restore, every time I do it, it goes thro the rutine, but when the computer reboots I get message saying Sustem restore unspecified error, no files changed...I have Window Vista. 2 months ago I did not have this problem
I did a system restore on my vista home premium, now all my .exe files are empty. I undid the restore but the files are still empty. Is there a way to get those files back? Why does a system restore in vista remove files with an .exe extension? I do not want to know about system restore, I want to know how to get my .exe files back. System restore removed that extension.
I figured out how to run a sfc /scannow from the command prompt which showed corrupted system files which it could not repair. It created a = CBS log file which I also managed to open. After that, I am totally at = sea. I do not understand anything in the log file. How do I effect = repairs? Do I do a repair install? If I do, will it disengage the = programs that I have installed as XP does?.....
I am not trying to move system files or folders. I am trying to move folders/files I created and copied over from my XP machine. When I check the properties they are read only. So I unswitch them get warned and as soon as I look at them again they are back to read-only. I have admin permissions so not sure what the problem is. I can delete the folders/files but I want to reorganize them. Is there a "Not a Newbie" version of Vista or maybe a tweak?
I was working on my laptop earlier this evening moving a few files around and organising my folders when I lost a few files from a folder. I don't know exactly what happened, I probably mashed the touch pad. Anyway, now I can't find the files anymore. I've tried running a search but it has come to no avail. How do I find my files? If it makes any difference the files were on a memory stick.
It was suggested to do a system restore to correct the problem of my computer restarting itself, which started after an update. I'm concerned if I will lose my files since that time if I do a system restore. Or what does it restore? Can someone explain it a little more to me....
System Restore images are eating my HD space alive! With XP it was easy to limit the percentage of HD space it could gobble up, but with Vista Home Premium I can't seem to find where to change it. Has MS in it's wisdom taken that control away from us or have they just hidden it somewhere new? If the later, somebody please clue me in as to where. I've got less "stuff" on my new Vista Home Premium PC than my older XP PC yet Vista has gobbled up 75 gig for what I'm doing on my XP machine in 24 gig. I know Vista is bigger to start with, but when I installed 3 gig worth of apps, I suddenly ended up with 24 gig less C: drive space!
I am new to Vista having just purchased a laptop with Vista Home Premium running on it. As a long time user of Windows XP, I have encounterd a Vista issue that perpelexes me. From my days with XP, I am quite used to access files in most system folders, to check on them or occasionly even modify them - for example changing the Startup layout. However, in Vista, I am unable to access such directories as "Application data" or "Local Settings" even while using my administrator account. These aand other inaccessible directories have a unique icon with an arrow running through it, as if they were shortcut files. This suggests that they are somehow special to Vista. My question is whether these files are really unacessable to all users with even the highest security privleges, or have I configured something wrong in Vista's rather "curious" security system?
I used the wrong system application to open php files and I need to change it, but when I try to, I am not given the option to "open this file with..." because I erroneoulsy checked "always use this program to open this type of file." What can I do to override this?
I currently am using vista 64 bit premium operating system. I have completed a system restore and when I try to save or view my favorites folder it does not work? After the restore I found my "favorites" folder in my "downloads" folder. When I try to use the "favorites" shortcut I can view my history, but my favorites are blank? If I go to my "favorites" folder in my "downloads" folder the favorites I have saved show up in there, but I cannot open them?
While installing a program, the process was interrupted and the install created 62000 files using 160gig in my syswow64 folder virtually using all my hd space. However when you go into the syswow64 folder, there is only about 2000 files and 1 gig of space used. I have set the folders to show all hidden files. When I go into the ms dos prompt and do a directory, the files match the 1 gig data.
I can't delete these 62000 files and free up the 160 gig space because I don't believe they are actually there on the hard drive but explorer thinks they are there. Is there any way to rebuild, sync, or otherwise get windows explorer to recognize the correct amount of files that are actually in my syswow64 folder.(2000files 1gig and not 62000files 160gig)
This is the second time this happen with me with Windows Vista, its a shame Microsoft release such trash. I just try to move or delete a file from a folder, Windows says that is not possible (!) I press OK and all files on that folder just desapear. I use search and the files are still there (even if windows explorer do not show them). But if I try to open the file from search window: file not found. The missing files cant be found at the trash or any other place.
I have a dual boot system with WinXP on HD1 and Vista on HD2 - HD1 is partitioned in 2 - I would like my files to be available to either operating system and would like to know if this is ok - I plan on storing my files on the second partition of the first harddrive (HD1)
Changing the visual style of Windows is something that has become very popular over the years with Windows XP. In Windows Vista, this is just starting to gain momentum with the release of a few cool hacked visual styles. These alternative visual styles are replacements for the default Aero glass style and offer slight tweaks on the design. Over time there will be more and more higher quality visual styles released for Windows Vista.
If you want to get started, you will need to download the hacked visual style skinning engine files from Rafael Rivera’s site. Rafael has both x86 and x64 versions available. These modified system files remove the requirement for visual style files to be digitally signed by Microsoft. If you need help replacing the system files with the modified files, check out my article on working with system files in Windows Vista.
UPDATE: There is now an automated utility that allows you to patch your visual style skinning engine files with just one click. Click here to check it out.
Make sure you replace all three hacked system files:...
I am running Vista Ultimate 32 bit. I have a folder on my desktop named Downloads that I use for, shockingly, downloads. Anyway, there are a couple of files in the folder that are, apparently, not really there. They are like ghost files. They used to exist but now they are still visible but not recognized by any program. Also, they have a size of 0 kb!
I'd like to get rid of them but they refuse to be deleted. When I try to delete them, I get this:
So I figured that I'd delete the whole folder........or not:
A multitude of files, folders and sub-folders have disappeared (all from my "Documents"). Miscellaneous sub-folders within folders have disappeared, while other sub-folders remain intact. At first I was completely lost, as the files were there not 30 minutes prior... After assuming the worst and thinking that they had corrupted or been deleted due to a virus, I:
- Made sure my folder options were set properly (I can view all hidden files) - Thoroughly checked the recycle bin - Did numerous searches - Downloaded Google Desktop and searched some more - Ran various "undelete" and "recovery" programs with no results - Did a system restore...........
I bought a new computer for college recently and I cannot download limewire. Everytime I try I get an error message that says "....can't open input files because of splittet files." I have no idea how to circumvent this.
When i download Files using Firefox or IE once they have downloaded they vanish from the files i save them too. I cannot find them anywhere on the computer i have even tried opening the files rather than saving them using IE. still no luck it jsut wont open.
When I go to C:Users I see "mine", public, and the other I deleted named "test" ....I'm positive that deleted the account and all files but I could be mistaken. Is there a fix for this? I want it deleted.
