Mar 29, 2010There must be a way to be sure all Vista and W7 system files are signed (not corrupted). I've researched and have not found a way.

View 8 RepliesI have two 0(General Tab) byte or 82(Detail tab) byte files, depending on what tab of properties is chosen. The files are not found in DOS or renameable, deletable, shredable, and no program or method suggested in a 1.5 hour discussion with Dell has worked. DOS says the file does not exist, and any operation on the file in Vista can't find the file to change, delete, rename, etc. It is not "running" and us not used by any other process. They only show up on the desktop. Every type of method tried(Many), the message is always the same. File not found. I have SP1 installed. My Windows Explorer is up to date.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI looked at the CBS.log and found that doing a search this has been going on since 1/2008 and my system runs fine. I just rebooted yesterday with 1252 hours of processor idle time so I think the system is stable. I looked at repairing the dll file from the vista disk but I think I could learn Chinese sooner than follow all these steps to take ownership and get the files from the disk.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have an hp g6032ea laptop with vista home premium. it was recently dropped and now on start up all we get is a black screen with operating system not found. I suspect that the hard drive is either scratched or cracked as it makes a rather ominous clicking sound. I have a brand new 160gb hard drive which i have fitted and a recovery disc which i purchased from HP as the machine did not come with one. when the new drive is inserted if I boot from the recovery cd it starts the process then puts up a message stating that the laptop is not supported by the recovery disc and switches itself off.

As a sidenote, how do I post a screen of something that shows straight away instead of an attachment that you must click on?

View 7 Replies View RelatedOne day my laptop was open and someone came in and SLAMMED the cover closed, and that messed something up. It will not start up correctly, if my computer is off, and then turned on, this is what happens: It starts successfully to the screen where you have to enter the boot password, after you enter the boot password, the following message just keeps being displayed: Quote: For Realtek RTL8111B/8111C gigabit Ethernet Controller v2.06 (070425) PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM. Intel UNDI, PXE-2.1 (build 082) Copyright (C) 1997-2000 Intel Corporation It just keeps showing that over and over. I have a "Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 32-Bit Operating System Disk" which says "Use this disk to re-install your operating system". If I use this disk will it completely wipe all my old files?
I am running Windows Vista Ultimate with Windows Defender Disabled and Norton Internet Security 2009 installed. Someone who is completely trusted sent me an email with an attachment. The attachment was defined as a ZIPP file. I copied the file to my desktop and renamed it to a ZIP file to access the enclosed files. Within the ZIP are four OCX files which I need to copy to my System32 directory.
When I attempt to copy the files to any location in my computer, I get "Windows has found this file is potentially harmful. To help protect your computer, Windows has blocked access to this file." When I click on the "How does this help protect my computer." link it takes me to Windows Mail help. This has nothing to do with Windows Mail. Where can I adjust the Security settings in Windows to fix this problem
I wanted to install a new theme onto my computer the other day, rather than use Glazz or whatever it's called i found instructions on how to edit some files within the System32 folder on the C drive. It told me to re-name the UxTheme.dll and two other files that i cant remember (ibelieve they were called something like svchost.dll and hmui.dll, total guesses)First i had to take ownership of all 3 files, then i had to change the permissions to full permision on all three to full control, and then i had to re-name all the files rom.dll to.old and then the part that i think i screwed up was that it said to copy something and i missed that,so i re-started the computer and then the problems arose. It will come up to the login screen, then i log in,it comes up with a message that UxTheme.dll cannot be found, i click ok and then two screenes come up saying that the Windows Explorer and Desktop Manager are not working and windows cannot find a solution. It then finishes loging in and brings to to a black screen where only the mouse pointer is visible, and that's it.If i ctrl-alt-delete it brings up the screene showing me my options, logout, switch users, task manager, etc.I can log out, switch etc,but if i click task manager it also brings up a window saying the task manageris not working.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI bought a new laptop with Vista already installed on it. I want to install XP in a multi boot configuration but get stuck in Disk Management and am unable to proceed from there. I'd like to keep Vista on my laptop, but if it comes down to it I'll need to take it off and put on XP because our work computers run with XP and we do a lot of work on reports and presentations from home and network from home. I can't find the New Partition Wizard to make a space for XP.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've heard conflicting reports as to whether Office 2000 will run successfully under Vista. In the hope that they are compatible, I installed Office 2000 and then installed (from the Microsoft site) updates SR-1a and SP-2. Then I downloaded SP3, but when I attempted to install it, I got the message "The expected version of the product was not found on your system." Is there some reason for this, or should I just try again? I looked for, but could not find, a newsgroup that deals with Office 2000 -- is there an alternative newsgroup that would be better for these questions?
View 9 Replies View RelatedWhile dealing with tech support from a peripherals company regarding a mouse problem, they had me check for certain system files, and we determined that several appeared to missing, including input.inf, msmouse.inf, and hidusd.sys. Someone suggested I use System File Checker (sfc / scannow), but this did not restore the files, and give error messages telling me that there were corrupted files but they could not be repaired. what might have happened to these files (and any others that might also be missing) and more importantly, how can I get them back.

i was in a process of removing virus on a customer's computer. I ran MBAM and superantispyware to remove lots of trojans and spywares and then i ran a boot scan from avast and it removed lots of infected system files like msconfig, cmd.exe, notepad, taskmgr.exe, etc. Now the scan is complete and there's no virus left on the computer. But now when i type cmd.exe in RUN, i get an error saying that Windows cannot find RUN & so on. Is there a way to get those missing system files?

the files still exist in my system32 folder, just under a backup filename now whenever i start my system (i tried safe mood and command prompt),it will always end up in a black screen with my white mouse pointer.I can go into the system recovery options fine, but there no system restore points exists.
I have had a Windows 2000 system connected to a Vista system thru a router. I have several shares defined on the Windows 2000 system. No shares are defined on the Vista system. On 28 April 2009, I replaced NIS 2008 with KIS 2008 on the Vista system. On 23 June 2009, I noticed that the Vista system could no longer COPY files from the Windows 2000 sysyem to the Vista system, tho I could still open the files.
I know that, on 19/20 June 2009, the Vista system copied files from the Windows 2000 system. So something broke after that. As I recall, there was a Windows update installed on 23 June 2009. Perhaps, that update changed some settings? What do I need to look for

System restore removed that extension.

I can delete the folders/files but I want to reorganize them. Is there a "Not a Newbie" version of Vista or maybe a tweak?

View 5 Replies View RelatedSystem Restore images are eating my HD space alive! With XP it was easy to limit the percentage of HD space it could gobble up, but with Vista Home Premium I can't seem to find where to change it. Has MS in it's wisdom taken that control away from us or have they just hidden it somewhere new? If the later, somebody please clue me in as to where. I've got less "stuff" on my new Vista Home Premium PC than my older XP PC yet Vista has gobbled up 75 gig for what I'm doing on my XP machine in 24 gig. I know Vista is bigger to start with, but when I installed 3 gig worth of apps, I suddenly ended up with 24 gig less C: drive space!
View 8 Replies View RelatedI am new to Vista having just purchased a laptop with Vista Home Premium running on it. As a long time user of Windows XP, I have encounterd a Vista issue that perpelexes me. From my days with XP, I am quite used to access files in most system folders, to check on them or occasionly even modify them - for example changing the Startup layout. However, in Vista, I am unable to access such directories as "Application data" or "Local Settings" even while using my administrator account. These aand other inaccessible directories have a unique icon with an arrow running through it, as if they were shortcut files. This suggests that they are somehow special to Vista. My question is whether these files are really unacessable to all users with even the highest security privleges, or have I configured something wrong in Vista's rather "curious" security system?

If I go to my "favorites" folder in my "downloads" folder the favorites I have saved show up in there, but I cannot open them?
