Re-named Files Now Comp Wont Work: UxTheme.dll Cannot Be Found
Feb 20, 2009
I wanted to install a new theme onto my computer the other day, rather than use Glazz or whatever it's called i found instructions on how to edit some files within the System32 folder on the C drive. It told me to re-name the UxTheme.dll and two other files that i cant remember (ibelieve they were called something like svchost.dll and hmui.dll, total guesses)First i had to take ownership of all 3 files, then i had to change the permissions to full permision on all three to full control, and then i had to re-name all the files rom.dll to.old and then the part that i think i screwed up was that it said to copy something and i missed that,so i re-started the computer and then the problems arose. It will come up to the login screen, then i log in,it comes up with a message that UxTheme.dll cannot be found, i click ok and then two screenes come up saying that the Windows Explorer and Desktop Manager are not working and windows cannot find a solution. It then finishes loging in and brings to to a black screen where only the mouse pointer is visible, and that's it.If i ctrl-alt-delete it brings up the screene showing me my options, logout, switch users, task manager, etc.I can log out, switch etc,but if i click task manager it also brings up a window saying the task manageris not working.

I know this has probably been discussed thousands of times, but i would like to know if there is any way that I can set up Vista to ask me if I want to name a file the same name as an existing file. I just did some experiments and Vista will allow me to name a file the same name as another existing file.

I turned on my computer the other day and an automatic download started to update my Verizon Internet Security Suiter (FIOS). I started a scan of my computer with the update. The new Security Suite update supposedly found 29,000+ infected files with a virus named Trojan-Downloader.Win32.VB.dck? The weird thing is - When I look for the files that are supposedly infected - or the folder that these files supposedly exist in I can't find it. The virus appears to have created a folder named " ' " on my hard drive - but when I look for this folder I can't find it. Even if I view hidden folders. My computer doesn't appear to be running strangly like it is infected. But the virus scan says it is.

I created a backup from uxtheme.dll in system32 folder and patched it afterwards. Now i want to unpatch it because my vista theme is only grey. I cannot delete, rename or do anything other with that dll because there is only written: access denied because i haven't got the access authorisation for it. I already tried following method and it failed: How to Delete a System File in Windows Vista :: the How-To Geek (Run cmd in administator mode)

Any advise on how I can speed up my laptop again? It used to be faster 2 months ago. No idea what happened.
I used to play Insurgency mod on medium settings (sometimes bloom, no music/shadows).
I'm looking for a FREE option. I've already done the "how to speed up my computer" tweaks a LONG time ago (before this happened).

Throughout the beta process Microsoft received a lot of feedback on how the taskbar and the window border changes to black when you maximize a window. Before the final release they altered the behavior slightly so the window and taskbar would still turn opaque and black, but with a very slight tint of color that matches the color of your glass. This change satisfied some users but left others still in the dark. Many users wanted a maximized window to remain transparent as well as the taskbar. Once the final build of Windows Vista shipped, all hope was gone that we would have transparent maximized windows, until today.
Using a very cool and free utility called VistaGlazz by CodeGazer.com you can easily make your maximized windows and taskbar transparent. Additionally, this utility allows you to easily patch your uxtheme system files so that you can use hacked visual styles with just the click of a button, instead of the multiple step manual procedure.
Let's get started: ...

I have two 0(General Tab) byte or 82(Detail tab) byte files, depending on what tab of properties is chosen. The files are not found in DOS or renameable, deletable, shredable, and no program or method suggested in a 1.5 hour discussion with Dell has worked. DOS says the file does not exist, and any operation on the file in Vista can't find the file to change, delete, rename, etc. It is not "running" and us not used by any other process. They only show up on the desktop. Every type of method tried(Many), the message is always the same. File not found. I have SP1 installed. My Windows Explorer is up to date.

I looked at the CBS.log and found that doing a search this has been going on since 1/2008 and my system runs fine. I just rebooted yesterday with 1252 hours of processor idle time so I think the system is stable. I looked at repairing the dll file from the vista disk but I think I could learn Chinese sooner than follow all these steps to take ownership and get the files from the disk.

I have an HP dv6000. I was using the computer today and it was fine and I did not download anything today. When I went to turn it on tonight it goes to the HP screen where in the bottom right hand corner I can pressesc for boot order settings for F10 for setup. Than it shuts off and does the same thing again. I try to press F8 but it's like it wont allow it, I can press F10 to get into setup but when I press F8 there is a
loud beep. It seems like there is a light ticking coming from the bottom part of the lap top, about every 5 seconds i hear a light tick. I tried to reset to the default settings. take the battery out, and all of that.

I am running Windows Vista Ultimate with Windows Defender Disabled and Norton Internet Security 2009 installed. Someone who is completely trusted sent me an email with an attachment. The attachment was defined as a ZIPP file. I copied the file to my desktop and renamed it to a ZIP file to access the enclosed files. Within the ZIP are four OCX files which I need to copy to my System32 directory.
When I attempt to copy the files to any location in my computer, I get "Windows has found this file is potentially harmful. To help protect your computer, Windows has blocked access to this file." When I click on the "How does this help protect my computer." link it takes me to Windows Mail help. This has nothing to do with Windows Mail. Where can I adjust the Security settings in Windows to fix this problem

My XP computers have a workgroup called: GROUP. I have just installed Vista Home Premium on a new computer I am building and, although I worked slowly and carefully (2nd instal because of this problem), I was not given any opportunity to name the workgroup on the new Vista computer. Instead it has been called: WORKGROUP, which is obviously the default, but as I said, I was not given any power to name the workgroup, whereas with XP the option to over-ride the default is always given.
The new install of Vista has picked up the XP workgroup (GROUP) and can see it alright, but this is untidy: I want one workgroup for all my computers. What I want simply is to delete WORKGROUP and have the new Vista computer to be part of the existing workgroup, i.e. GROUP.

While installing a program, the process was interrupted and the install created 62000 files using 160gig in my syswow64 folder virtually using all my hd space. However when you go into the syswow64 folder, there is only about 2000 files and 1 gig of space used. I have set the folders to show all hidden files. When I go into the ms dos prompt and do a directory, the files match the 1 gig data.
I can't delete these 62000 files and free up the 160 gig space because I don't believe they are actually there on the hard drive but explorer thinks they are there. Is there any way to rebuild, sync, or otherwise get windows explorer to recognize the correct amount of files that are actually in my syswow64 folder.(2000files 1gig and not 62000files 160gig)

I just bought a brand new computer less than a month ago. A Dell with over 3 ghz processor, 3 g of RAM, and 300 g hard drive. I made sure it had the best video card, etc for playing games. I bought this computer to play Spore, which is a pretty big game. I just want to say that I hate Vista. I have had nothing but problems with it! I fixed most of the problems with Spore and moving files, etc. But I can't get Civilization 4 to work on it.
I bought Civ 4 for my husband for Christmas, but it won't work. While loading, An error pops up that says "Sid Meier's Civiliaztion 4 has stopped working. Windows is checking for a solution to the problem." Then "A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." Of course, it never has. We've tried everything. We even tried running it in Windows NT compatibility mode. I am so angry with Vista. I regret buying this computer now, because in a few years when a better operating system comes out, this computer will be worthless.

I'm sure I'm not the first one to wonder about this, but I can't find an answer anywhere. Maybe someone here can enlighten me: Why is the new Windows OS named Windows 7? It's not the seventh version of the Windows desktop family:
Windows 3
Windows 95 = Windows 4
Windows 98 = Windows 5
Windows Me = Windows 6 (or maybe 5.5, or maybe 0 ... but still ...)
Windows 2000 desktop = Windows 7
Windows XP = Windows 8
Windows Vista = Windows 9 (or maybe another 0 ... but still ...)
That would make Windows 7 the 10th desktop version of Windows. Even eliminating Windows Me and Windows Vista from the list would make Windows 7 the 8th desktop version of Windows ... So what's the reason for this name?
