Folders With File Named "afw"?
Apr 3, 2009I have two new folders in my user folder. I don't know how they appeared. Here is a screenshot:
inside both I have a file named "afw".
Do you know what it means?

May 8, 2008I know this has probably been discussed thousands of times, but i would like to know if there is any way that I can set up Vista to ask me if I want to name a file the same name as an existing file. I just did some experiments and Vista will allow me to name a file the same name as another existing file.

Mar 23, 2008My XP computers have a workgroup called: GROUP. I have just installed Vista Home Premium on a new computer I am building and, although I worked slowly and carefully (2nd instal because of this problem), I was not given any opportunity to name the workgroup on the new Vista computer. Instead it has been called: WORKGROUP, which is obviously the default, but as I said, I was not given any power to name the workgroup, whereas with XP the option to over-ride the default is always given.
The new install of Vista has picked up the XP workgroup (GROUP) and can see it alright, but this is untidy: I want one workgroup for all my computers. What I want simply is to delete WORKGROUP and have the new Vista computer to be part of the existing workgroup, i.e. GROUP.
Moving File Folders To New HD
Mar 11, 2009Is it possible without screwing windows Vista 64 up, to move a folder from one spot to another. Explenation: I added a second HD to my laptop(it holds 2). Iwant to move all my Games to that drive, I moved one and edit the shortcuts in Star menu. Now I was wondering is this going to screw up the registry or anything? I just Dragged the folder from Programs Folder to new Game folder on other HD. I do not want to have to reload it all. I mean i Have LotRo and Age of Conan bothe with at least an Hour of patchs I'd have to do again!

Jun 10, 2009I'm working in InDesign. I prefer for all my windows to come up in Detail view. When I "Open a File," the window comes up in List view. I can change that specific window to Detail, and it will stay that way, but I can't figure out how to universally change all such windows to open in Detail. Anybody know?

Feb 14, 2010I have two versions of Eudora on my PC but only one (Eudora 8 beta) is recognized in file folders that contain *.jpg files (as of today).
Before today, I would highlight a JPG and click on Email at the top of the open folder. Eudora 7.1 would come up and all I had to do was put in an email address. I should say that I use Eudora 7.1 with two sets of data - one for me and one for my wife.
However, my wife's version would come up which is what I want. As of today, Eudora 8 beta comes up when I click on Email. I have no idea how the association changed.
I also don't know why my wife's version of Eudora 7.1 used to come up instead of mine.
There must be a way to reset the association. I tried resetting the association in Internet Explorer - but only Eudora 8 beta is available as a choice. That's another problem. Why isn't Eudora 7.1 a choice in file associations in Internet Explorer 8?
Infected Files With Virus Named Trojan-Downloader.Win32.VB.dck
Jan 10, 2009I turned on my computer the other day and an automatic download started to update my Verizon Internet Security Suiter (FIOS). I started a scan of my computer with the update. The new Security Suite update supposedly found 29,000+ infected files with a virus named Trojan-Downloader.Win32.VB.dck? The weird thing is - When I look for the files that are supposedly infected - or the folder that these files supposedly exist in I can't find it. The virus appears to have created a folder named " ' " on my hard drive - but when I look for this folder I can't find it. Even if I view hidden folders. My computer doesn't appear to be running strangly like it is infected. But the virus scan says it is.

Feb 20, 2009I wanted to install a new theme onto my computer the other day,rather than use Glazz or whatever it's called i found instructions on how to edit some files within the System32 folder on the C drive.It told me to re-name the UxTheme.dll and two other files that i cant remember (ibelieve they were called something like svchost.dll and hmui.dll,total guesses)First i had to take ownership of all 3 files,then i had to change the permissions to full permision on all three to full control,and then i had to re-name all the files rom.dll to.old and then the part that i think i screwed up was that it said to copy something and i missed that,so i re-started the computer and then the problems arose.It will come up to the login screen,then i log in,it comes up with a message that UxTheme.dll cannot be found, i click ok and then two screenes come up saying that the Windows Explorer and Desktop Manager are not working and windows cannot find a solution.It then finishes loging in and brings to to a black screen where only the mouse pointer is visible, and that's it.If i ctrl-alt-delete it brings up the screene showing me my options,logout,switch users, task manager,etc.I can log out,switch etc,but if i click task manager it also brings up a window saying the task manageris not working.

Nov 12, 2009I restored my vista OS using a system image utility provided by Alienware. It created a backup folder on the c drive with all the old files in it, including user profiles. I changed the owner of all files and folders back to my account and tried to delete it, but got the UAC messages that I need to allow administrator rights to do so. After clicking yes, I got a message that permission was denied with the only options of "Try Again" or "Cancel". After making visible all hidden files and folders, I was able to drill down to the one file I could not delete. I've used the "take ownership" steps in Vista explorer properties, and also the "takeown" dos commands, which report success that the Administrators group or my account which belongs to the administrators group, is the owner of the file, and that I have full control of it. Even so, I cannot delete this file. In DOS, I get access denied. In Explorer, I get the "you need permission to perform this action" message, with "try again" or "cancel", and it shows that my account (or administrators group, doing it that way) is the owner. It's just this one file. I was able to delete all other files and folders around this file, but just not this one.
I wonder if the folder path is so long or so nested that UAC fails to figure it out? It was in users\appdata
oamingetc. Or is the file corrupt? The file is a tempory file created by one of those biometric devices when logged on with your fingerprint, and is supposed to disappear when you log off, but it seems to have remained there because of a hard boot. Is there a utility I can use that can nuke this one lone file?
File Sharing And Print Does "Public Folders."
May 13, 2008I have a small LAN with a Vista desktop (called Osiris) and a few XP laptops (one of which is called Snowdancer. Last week I did a "clean" install of Vista on Osiris. Before this clean install I had two way communications between Snowdancer and Osiris. I use Windows Explorer to move files between the two. After the clean install Osiris could still manipulate files on Snowdancer, but the reverse is not happening. BTW, print sharing works and so does "Public Folders." From this I conclude that I do not have a connection issue, right? I do not have a Domain.
My C: drive is "Shared." I log into Snowdancer with my full name Robert Schuldenfrei and a password. I log into Osiris with my nickname Bob and no password. I am an administrator on both systems. I have searched through this NG for similar problems and there are lots of posts. I have come up short with every repair I have looked into, so I must be missing something. Remember, before my clean install I had this working just fine.

Why Is The New Windows OS Named Windows 7
Oct 22, 2009I'm sure I'm not the first one to wonder about this, but I can't find an answer anywhere. Maybe someone here can enlighten me: Why is the new Windows OS named Windows 7? It's not the seventh version of the Windows desktop family:
Windows 3
Windows 95 = Windows 4
Windows 98 = Windows 5
Windows Me = Windows 6 (or maybe 5.5, or maybe 0 ... but still ...)
Windows 2000 desktop = Windows 7
Windows XP = Windows 8
Windows Vista = Windows 9 (or maybe another 0 ... but still ...)
That would make Windows 7 the 10th desktop version of Windows. Even eliminating Windows Me and Windows Vista from the list would make Windows 7 the 8th desktop version of Windows ... So what's the reason for this name?

Jul 29, 2009I am just configuring Windows Mail in Vista. In Outlook (on XP), I had multiple email accounts linked to different folder structures. Each account had a different set of folders. In Windows Mail, it seems everything is being downloaded into one Inbox. Can I re-create the separate folders for each email account in WinMail?
Also, my gmail accounts folder structure was synchronized with the folder structure on the web using IMAP. Can I do that in WinMail, too? If so, how (or point me to directions)?

Oct 15, 2009when i turn on my computer, an error message comes saying "Windows failed to load because a file is missing or corrupt File: Netio.sys Status: 0xc0000221" This started when i was clearing my computer of useless programs, and after i deleted Realtime player or Quicktime player, (can't remember which) an error message jumped from the taskbar saying something about Network device driver. After that every time i start the computer, the "Windows failed to load" message pops up. The first half a year, it was solved by pressing enter, to "Choose an operating system to start: Windows Vista" and then to "Windows error recovery (start windows normally, safe mode etc)" and back to "Windows failed to start", repeating it 3-20 times. Then i had a familiar "Unexpected shutdown" during a game, and now, the "Enter spamming technique" doesn't work anymore. All i can access at the moment is Windows memory diagnostic tool, and Bios setup utility. Is there any way to fix this through the setup utility or some other manner?

For example, if I want to search my C drive for all PDF files or all photos, the search function won't work without entering text from a file name (which doesn't work, because all files of a particular type don't necessarily share letters or characteristics in their names). May 15, 2010Whenever I request a "File|Open" or "File|Save" from any application, the mini-Windows-Explorer dialog box that opens freezes and hangs the entire application. Happens with almost all applications. Not limited to just Microsoft programs. It does not matter if I like change the download folder or if I rt click always the same.
Back when it was under warranty Hp tells me to just restore to original settings. I hate to do that. But I am about to see that this might be the only fix for it. (But I am hoping not.) I think it started a long time ago when I was changing the USB ports I used for my external Hard drive and it changed drive letter. (maybe maybe not.. just seems I remember that being something that had happened when I first recall things hanging...) anyway I have all drives in the place I want them now and this issue still happens even if I dont have that external drive plugged in.
File Names Not Sorted Properly In File List
Mar 23, 2008When I open a folder with a list of files for all View Options, the files are not listed in proper ascending sequence. I indexed the files to make sure that indexing may not be the factor in the Sort By Name not working properly. After the files were indexed, clicked the Sort By Name item in the View menu item, and the files are stilled not sorted porperly. Has anyone encountered this similar problem ? I suspect this may be a bug in Windows Vista File System. The folder had 87 files in it.

But it created a file on my desktop which is corrupted and the original file is corrupted (neither will open). I am saving a new Excel file to a directory and I want to give it a similar name as a text file that already resides in that directory. However, when I "Save As" the Excel file in the selected directory, the only other files I see in that directory are other Excel files. I don't see any of the other files that I know are in there (Word, Powerpoint, pdf, etc.). In prior versions of Excel, I have been able to see all of the files in a
