File Sharing And Print Does "Public Folders."

May 13, 2008

I have a small LAN with a Vista desktop (called Osiris) and a few XP laptops (one of which is called Snowdancer. Last week I did a "clean" install of Vista on Osiris. Before this clean install I had two way communications between Snowdancer and Osiris. I use Windows Explorer to move files between the two. After the clean install Osiris could still manipulate files on Snowdancer, but the reverse is not happening. BTW, print sharing works and so does "Public Folders." From this I conclude that I do not have a connection issue, right? I do not have a Domain.

My C: drive is "Shared." I log into Snowdancer with my full name Robert Schuldenfrei and a password. I log into Osiris with my nickname Bob and no password. I am an administrator on both systems. I have searched through this NG for similar problems and there are lots of posts. I have come up short with every repair I have looked into, so I must be missing something. Remember, before my clean install I had this working just fine.

Public Folder File Sharing

Apr 13, 2009

Two machines on my network, Mine is Vista 64 and my wifes is Vista 32.
My wife machine has Network descovery on File sharing on (does NOT say a password is required) Public folder sharing on (anyone with network access can open, change
and create).

The public folder share property confirms "everyone" has access write delete access.and If I ask her machine to show me all shared folders - it shows the "public" one.

When look in network places on my machine - I see hers, but when I tray and access I am prompted for password. If I give her machines Admin password (it used to be my machine) I get in to see and access the public folder.

Why is the public folder on her machine not accessible without a password?

Sorry for such a noob question - but it does not seem sensible behaviour.

Visa File/Print Sharing Requires Username

Mar 25, 2009

This is regarding a desktop using Vista Home Premium and a laptop using Vista Home Premium. A shared printer is attached to the desktop. I've spent more than a few hours of researching on the internet, including the technet information for Vista file/print sharing. I have enabled file and print sharing without using a password on a private network. I have Xp machines on my home network. I am able to access them with no issues.

My issue is that when I access my Vista Home Premium desktop from the Vista Home Premium laptop (or vice versa), I have to enter a username. Any letter of the alphabet works, a password is not required. My desktop is a dual boot system. The other OS is XP Home. It does not require a username for file/print sharing................

Junction Points Public Folders

Jul 29, 2009

I am running vista business sp2. Malware is identifying problem files in my public folders but is inable to delete them. When I run "dir /AL" in the comand prompt in the publicdocuments directory I get the following:

Volume in drive C is Server 1TB1_P1 (VU_C)
Volume Serial Number is CF4C-9E98

Directory of C:UsersPublicDocuments

02/11/2006 08:41 AM My Music [E:UsersPublicMusic]
02/11/2006 08:41 AM My Pictures [E:UsersPublicPictures]
02/11/2006 08:41 AM My Videos [E:UsersPublicVideos]
0 File(s) 0 bytes
3 Dir(s) 280,166,969,344 bytes free

This is obviously not correct since E: is my CD/DVD drive. On my other computer, the redirection is to C: and not E: How do I restore these junction points to the correct locations?

Documents Folder Hidden In Public Folders, But Cannot Unhide

May 17, 2008

I have what appears to be an odd issue, and I can't find reference to it on the web anywhere. Under the Public folder on my Vista machine, I can see the folders Public Downloads, Public Music etc. BUT Public Documents is missing.

If I use the cmd shell, I get the same effect:
Directory of C:UsersPublic
11/05/2008 16:54 .
11/05/2008 16:54 ..
13/04/2008 08:37 Downloads

12/02/2008 19:15 Pictures
26/04/2008 08:25 Recorded TV
05/04/2008 11:11 Videos

HOWEVER the documents folder does exist. I can CD into it and see my files. From within explorer, I can enter C:UsersPublicDocuments explicitly and get to the folder, but is does not show up under C:usersPublic.....

File Sharing Is 'on', Password Protected Sharing Is 'off'

File sharing is 'on', password protected sharing is 'off', and I have shared the 'documents' folder on both machines

When I view my network I see both computers "PAUL-PC" and PAUL-LAPTOP", when I select the one I'm not working on I see "Users", "Documents" and "Printers". When I select "Documents" I see "\PAUL-LAPTOPDocuments is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource....... etc."

Sharing With Business: Can't Print To The Printer On MAIN

Oct 10, 2008

I'm having a problem with Vista business that's driving me crazy. At work I have Vista business on a main machine (called MAIN). It's a Dell Vostro and it came pre-installed with Vista Business, 4 GB RAM, 200 GB hard drive. I have patient management and imaging software on it and I have up to 7 computers that connect to MAIN to access this software. I have all the sharing and security settings for "Everyone" and I can connect with all seven computers most of the time. But everyday, one or two of the workstation computers (running Vista basic), will be kicked off and I get an error message when I try to reconnect to MAIN "No more connections can be made at this remote computer at this time because there are already as many connections as this computer can accept."

So I can't access the software on MAIN, I can't print to the printer on MAIN, I can't do anything until I reboot MAIN. Then everything can connect again. This happens randomly and I know the maximum connections is 10 computers, so why am I having this problem with 7? Connection to the router is fine and I have internet connections on all seven. 2 of the seven are wired to the router and the other 5 are wireless connections.

Sharing Folders Cannot Be Accessed

I'm trying to set up a wireless network between my Vista x64 PC and an XP laptop. Both running the latest service packs and updates etc. Nothing fancy, just trying to share my collection of music and videos with the laptop. Now, on both machines I can see each shared folder, but can't access them all for some reason. On the Vista pc I'm sharing "Videos" and "Music", and both appear on the XP laptop; however, while Music is brows-able and working fine, for some reason Videos cannot be accessed. I've checked and both Videos and Music have the exact same permissions etc., so I can't figure out why one is accessible and not the other.

Access Denied When Sharing Folders

Aug 18, 2008

I have a HTPC running vista ultimate 32bit, 250gb OS drive and 1tb mirror storage drive (need some fault tolerance since my pics and music will be stored here.) I would like to have this machine also act as a mini server and be able to share out the folders housing my music and my pictures. ( makes it easier for me to dump off my recently taken pics from vacations that i may have dumped onto my laptop, and now that i am back home would like to dump back to the vista machine.) This machine is also part of a domain (a whole other nightmare to get vista to join my domain) My server is running windows 2003 standard.

I set folder permissions and and i just can't seem to get passed the access denied. when trying to open up one of the vista shared folders. from the domain controller i mapped the folders that i need and i can open them but can not make any changes or create new directories. what am i doing wrong? I know i am no expert when it comes to networking but xp has never given me this much of a headache. *the reason it is on a domain and not a workgroup - is to broaden my skill and familiarity with working with servers, Domain controllers and Active Directory*

On my vista machine I have password protection off , discovery on, public folder on and file sharing on. Printer Sharing XP:unable To Print To The Host Printer Wirelessly

I recently installed a router so I can use laptop wirelessly. That works fine. However, I am unable to print to the host printer wirelessly. Do I have to make the Workgroup names the same and if so do I change the Dell with XP or the HP with Vista? I changed the Dell once to no avail so I changed back. Do computer names have to be same? Odd File Sharing

Apr 25, 2008

i have a couple of problems now, both very annoying:

1) my pc does not connect to the internet when i wake it from sleep. It requires me to shut down and turn off power completely, then reboot. My previous install of windows was fine

2) my pc is set up (as far as i can tell) to file share. to see other computers AND share. I cannot see other XP machines on my network, they cannot see me. Before i reinstalled it was also fine. I have tried so many different things now to rectify the problem but nothing seems to solve it

I'm a little annoyed at microsoft to be honest. I've put up with so many problems and worked aorund them, but sleeping and file sharing - two features which they used to sell vista have given me such problems recently.
