Moving File Folders To New HD

Mar 11, 2009

Is it possible without screwing windows Vista 64 up, to move a folder from one spot to another. Explenation: I added a second HD to my laptop(it holds 2). Iwant to move all my Games to that drive, I moved one and edit the shortcuts in Star menu. Now I was wondering is this going to screw up the registry or anything? I just Dragged the folder from Programs Folder to new Game folder on other HD. I do not want to have to reload it all. I mean i Have LotRo and Age of Conan bothe with at least an Hour of patchs I'd have to do again!

Moving Desktop Files & Folders...

Mar 6, 2010

I have googled this to death and I have also search here and I have not found an answer. I am ready to migrate to Windows 7 and I am trying to move my wife's desktop items to another folder on another drive but I am finding this simple task annoying and impossible since all it wants to do is place shortcuts on the target folder.

I am trying to do this as an Administrator but no matter what I try, I get the same results. I am sure there is a simpler way to go about doing this but... I am also sure I can't find it!

Moving User Folders To A Portable Drive

May 21, 2008

I'm going to send my laptop to HP for repair. So I thought I should remove all my documents and other data before that. I did a Ctrl-X on all the folders under User (such as Documents, Pictures, etc) and a Ctrl-V on my portable harddrive. I suppose that was a mistake for now, Vista always looks for that drive. How do I undo my stupid mistake?

Moving To 64, Program File Directories

Sep 2, 2008

About a week or so ago, I decided to upgrade my PC to Windows Vista. I gave it awhile, mostly didn't want to deal with an upgrade and all that. System has been fine on XP for years...why mess with it. But having gotten a new video card, I just wanted to be current on my OS again. As it turns out, I like Vista alot and have had little to no trouble with it. If you look at my system config, nothing is more than a year old at most, so my computer, at least for my needs is still "current." Having tried and like Vista 32bit (Home Premium) I have decided to take the next step into 64bit and that's why I am here. My system is 64 bit compatible, so I figure it's time to take full advantage of it. I have important apps I use for school for 3D that have 64bit versions I've been wanting to try, and I have 2 Gigs of RAM coming today which will make my total 4 and 64bit is the only way I can utilize it all!

I'll probably be doing the format install sometime tonight, which finally brings me to why I posted. In my research of Vista 64, I have read some blurbs about it giving youo 2 program files, Program Files and Program Files x86 (Or something.) I've also read that in some cases it can be important to make sure you install a certain program to the right one. My system has 3 physical Hard drive, that I partitioned in several total for storage, windows, programs, games, and so on. My current Program Files is a 80GB Partition all by itself. It's a different physical drive than Windows is on. Will installing applications to this drive like I have always did cause me any trouble in this new Vista 64 bit I'm about to dive into? My system will definately have a mix of 32bit and 64bit apps, with more by far probably being 32bit. Also while I think to ask, will the Vista 64 install procedure allow me to just wipe the partition my OS is currently on? Or will going to 64 bit require me to wipe the entire physical HDD? The other partitions that share the Windows INstall Partition are just storage so I don't want to format them unless I need to.

Issue With Moving Files : File Stays Shaded

Sep 4, 2008

I have a bit of a problem with moving files around...instead of trying to explain it Ill just list the things that is wrong:

ctrl+C, ctrl-V, ctrl+X does not work

trying to cut/copy/paste from right clicking does not work

drag/drop does not work

I CAN open the file and Save As.. to put the file where I want it. This is exclusively with files, I can do whatever I want with text without a problem. everything is available to use in the right-click menu, and when I cut a file it shades the file, but if I try to paste it somewhere else it does nothing, the file stays shaded where it originally was.

Moving A Few Files Around And Organising My Folders When I Lost A Few Files From A Folder

Sep 16, 2009

I was working on my laptop earlier this evening moving a few files around and organising my folders when I lost a few files from a folder. I don't know exactly what happened, I probably mashed the touch pad. Anyway, now I can't find the files anymore. I've tried running a search but it has come to no avail. How do I find my files? If it makes any difference the files were on a memory stick.

Changing Folders View When Opening A File

I'm working in InDesign. I prefer for all my windows to come up in Detail view. When I "Open a File," the window comes up in List view. I can change that specific window to Detail, and it will stay that way, but I can't figure out how to universally change all such windows to open in Detail. Anybody know?

Change Default Email In File Folders

Feb 14, 2010

I have two versions of Eudora on my PC but only one (Eudora 8 beta) is recognized in file folders that contain *.jpg files (as of today).

Before today, I would highlight a JPG and click on Email at the top of the open folder. Eudora 7.1 would come up and all I had to do was put in an email address. I should say that I use Eudora 7.1 with two sets of data - one for me and one for my wife.

However, my wife's version would come up which is what I want. As of today, Eudora 8 beta comes up when I click on Email. I have no idea how the association changed.

I also don't know why my wife's version of Eudora 7.1 used to come up instead of mine.

There must be a way to reset the association. I tried resetting the association in Internet Explorer - but only Eudora 8 beta is available as a choice. That's another problem. Why isn't Eudora 7.1 a choice in file associations in Internet Explorer 8?

Delete File And Folders UAC Messages "administrator Rights"

Nov 12, 2009

I restored my vista OS using a system image utility provided by Alienware. It created a backup folder on the c drive with all the old files in it, including user profiles. I changed the owner of all files and folders back to my account and tried to delete it, but got the UAC messages that I need to allow administrator rights to do so. After clicking yes, I got a message that permission was denied with the only options of "Try Again" or "Cancel". After making visible all hidden files and folders, I was able to drill down to the one file I could not delete. I've used the "take ownership" steps in Vista explorer properties, and also the "takeown" dos commands, which report success that the Administrators group or my account which belongs to the administrators group, is the owner of the file, and that I have full control of it. Even so, I cannot delete this file. In DOS, I get access denied. In Explorer, I get the "you need permission to perform this action" message, with "try again" or "cancel", and it shows that my account (or administrators group, doing it that way) is the owner. It's just this one file. I was able to delete all other files and folders around this file, but just not this one.

I wonder if the folder path is so long or so nested that UAC fails to figure it out? It was in users\appdata
oamingetc. Or is the file corrupt? The file is a tempory file created by one of those biometric devices when logged on with your fingerprint, and is supposed to disappear when you log off, but it seems to have remained there because of a hard boot. Is there a utility I can use that can nuke this one lone file?

File Sharing And Print Does "Public Folders."

May 13, 2008

I have a small LAN with a Vista desktop (called Osiris) and a few XP laptops (one of which is called Snowdancer. Last week I did a "clean" install of Vista on Osiris. Before this clean install I had two way communications between Snowdancer and Osiris. I use Windows Explorer to move files between the two. After the clean install Osiris could still manipulate files on Snowdancer, but the reverse is not happening. BTW, print sharing works and so does "Public Folders." From this I conclude that I do not have a connection issue, right? I do not have a Domain.

My C: drive is "Shared." I log into Snowdancer with my full name Robert Schuldenfrei and a password. I log into Osiris with my nickname Bob and no password. I am an administrator on both systems. I have searched through this NG for similar problems and there are lots of posts. I have come up short with every repair I have looked into, so I must be missing something. Remember, before my clean install I had this working just fine.

GUI Boot: No Moving Bar

May 31, 2009

I wanted to see what kinda the other vista boot screen would be if you untick the "No GUI boot" thing from msconfig. However, when I booted Vista loads that picture (there is no moving bar or anything) and suddenly gives me this error code: 0xc0000225: NLS data is missing or corrupt, vista cannot boot, contact system administrator, blah blah blah.

is Vista really this kinda OS? You disable GUI boot and you need to reinstall the whole OS? I really need to know how I can fix this. I also have ubuntu on this same pc and I can fully access vista files with it. Safe mode also gives that error.

Copying And Moving : 2mb Per Second?

Jun 8, 2008

However, I now cannot backup my email. Before I would copy the dbx files and it would take about 10 minutes to do 5gb. Now however - I have 400,000 eml files (I have a lot of email from my web businesses). These eml files are all small. So my problem is that windows first of all takes approx. 2 hours just to calculate the damn size. Then when it eventually starts to copy the files from one location to another (Either on the same RAIDed sata drives, or to another) it estimates days of transfer time left. And I know the calculations are never right, so I left my PC on for 9 hours one night and it wasn't even half way through! It was transferring at 2mb per second! I can upload the data to the internet and back faster than that!

I mean - what the hell? If 98 can do it, me, 2000, xp... what's gone wrong with Vista? So far it's been a pile of junk and it's driving me mad! I'm really trying to like it and make it work, but it's about to be sent back to the shop. So folks - can you tell me why this nonsense? How do i get around it? How can I backup these thousands of tiny files without leaving my PC on for days (I want to do a 10 min backup each day to another sata drive, simple task).

Moving ANY From One Machine To Another.

Apr 20, 2008

I had my own motherboard start playing up on a machine I use with Vista Business on it.I upgraded it from XP Pro Feb 2007. When it started playing up I changed the motherboard and CPU and thought that I would have to do a repair install, then install motherboard drivers and possibly have to activate all over again the same as you do with XP in this situation.Nope.I could NOT do a repair install on it and in fact had to lose the whole thing and install fresh!I have my own image backup using True Image 10 Home version so can get data back from there but it isnt the ideal setup. What happens, in the future, when a business with Vista has the motherboard go bang? They have to lose everything the way I did and start again? Talk about a BIG problem for Microsoft if so.So, after I quietened down I thought - no it must just be my mistake. I looked around and I cannot prove I was wrong. If there is a way to repair install so you can move everything to a new machine the same as you could for XP.

Moving Certain Fonts

Feb 1, 2009

The huge number of fonts supplied with my version of Vista (don't know if they're all the same) makes for a very long list in the font box of most of my programs. In there are a WHOLE bunch of international fonts for languages I'll never need. But the system doesn't want to let me move them out of there into some other storage folder and/or delete them - it says I need permission. I looked at the security settings for those files and they are currently owned by "trusted installer". Administrators can't move or delete these files. As administrator, I can grant myself the permissions to let me move them. there is a warning message about possibly making harmful changes to the system. Is there any danger in doing this? Otherwise, any way to mask these fonts without uninstalling them?

Moving Data From The Xp Machine

Feb 6, 2009

I replaced it with a Vista pc. I thought that I would have no problem moving my data because on my other setup, I had kept all of my 'stuff' on a separate HDD (partitioned into 4 parts). Once I had gotten my Vista up & running, I felt ready to move-in my data drive from the xp machine. When I cracked open the case, I found that it was a sata setup -- my data drive was ide.

I got this Addonics IDE to Serial ATA Converter to 'make it work'. This converter is a small circuit board that plugs into the ide connection on the hard drive. You use all leads from a Y power plug to power the ide hard drive & the circuit board (the circuit board uses the small floppy) a sata wire plugs into the circuit board & into your motherboard. I changed the mode select from cable to master. (as directed in the feeble instructions) On my motherboard there are 4 sata plugins. 1 is my primary HDD. 2 was my DVD. I plugged the converted ide drive into 3. When I started up Vista. I got a black screen. I let it set for about 3-4 minutes........

Now that I sometimes have 10 or 12 apps open at any given time, I'm finding that the muscles of my hand often get strained.
