Make Maximized Windows & Taskbar Transparent + Automated UXtheme Patcher
Apr 13, 2007
Throughout the beta process Microsoft received a lot of feedback on how the taskbar and the window border changes to black when you maximize a window. Before the final release they altered the behavior slightly so the window and taskbar would still turn opaque and black, but with a very slight tint of color that matches the color of your glass. This change satisfied some users but left others still in the dark. Many users wanted a maximized window to remain transparent as well as the taskbar. Once the final build of Windows Vista shipped, all hope was gone that we would have transparent maximized windows, until today.Â
Using a very cool and free utility called VistaGlazz by CodeGazer.com you can easily make your maximized windows and taskbar transparent. Additionally, this utility allows you to easily patch your uxtheme system files so that you can use hacked visual styles with just the click of a button, instead of the multiple step manual procedure.
Let's get started: ...

I think I've found a bug with the way Vista handles dual screens and wallpapers. I'm sure there are PLENTY of us who have dual monitors. For those of you who do, try this:
1. Make sure Aero is enabled, and that your taskbar is always transparent.
2. Download any dual screen capable wallpaper program. For instance, Ultramon, DisplayFusion, etc.
3. Set a DIFFERENT WALLPAPER PER MONITOR. Make sure to do this.
4. Observe?
You'll see THROUGH the transparency of the taskbar that the wallpaper schema is screwed up. There is a small part of the wallpaper that is cut off at the bottom right, around the system tray icons, and looks like the wallpaper repeating, or is confused with the wallpaper on the secondary monitor............

when I window, whether it be Firefox, any other program, or a Windows Explorer window isn't maximized, the transparent features work fine, and look nice. But when I make anything full screen (maximized), the title bar goes black and ugly.

Is the Start Menu in Vista Premium 64-bit supposed to be transparent? If so, mine is not, and I would prefer that it was. Is there some tweak that I am missing? I am running the Aero Glass desktop, but my Start Menu is still opaque. I have tried a dozen 3rd party programs, to no avail. WindowBlinds from Stardock wreaks havoc on my desktop settings. Does anyone have a clue as to how to make and desktop (and perhaps the right-click context menu) transparent?

I created a backup from uxtheme.dll in system32 folder and patched it afterwards. Now i want to unpatch it because my vista theme is only grey. I cannot delete, rename or do anything other with that dll because there is only written: access denied because i haven't got the access authorisation for it. I already tried following method and it failed: How to Delete a System File in Windows Vista :: the How-To Geek (Run cmd in administator mode)

I calculated that to migrate to Vista or Windows 7 will cost close to =A32000. not including my time - It will take around 100 hours. This is because many of my existing software / tools / utilities does not work on Vista and the vendors expect me to buy a new license because it is a "new product" even though it does exactly what it did before - just on a different OS. Even the products that do work have problems and glitches that have to be worked around. All this takes time MY VALUABLE time. In other words I am suffering because Microsoft want money. In the past some versions of windows were worth migrating to Windows 2000 and Windows XP were great
But most of the improvements to Vista / Windows 7 are mostly transparent to normal users - even monster power users like me. I believe Microsoft have a serious attitude problem. just wait until they take full advantage of TPM to screw even more money out of us. If I am wrong please point out a real tangible benefit that Vista or Windows 7 brings to a large percentage of users or to me. I also I can no longer buy a laptop because they only come with Vista GPU drivers (some come with buggy unsupported XP GPU drivers - great)

I wanted to install a new theme onto my computer the other day, rather than use Glazz or whatever it's called i found instructions on how to edit some files within the System32 folder on the C drive. It told me to re-name the UxTheme.dll and two other files that i cant remember (ibelieve they were called something like svchost.dll and hmui.dll, total guesses)First i had to take ownership of all 3 files, then i had to change the permissions to full permision on all three to full control, and then i had to re-name all the files rom.dll to.old and then the part that i think i screwed up was that it said to copy something and i missed that,so i re-started the computer and then the problems arose. It will come up to the login screen, then i log in,it comes up with a message that UxTheme.dll cannot be found, i click ok and then two screenes come up saying that the Windows Explorer and Desktop Manager are not working and windows cannot find a solution. It then finishes loging in and brings to to a black screen where only the mouse pointer is visible, and that's it.If i ctrl-alt-delete it brings up the screene showing me my options, logout, switch users, task manager, etc.I can log out, switch etc,but if i click task manager it also brings up a window saying the task manageris not working.

I use Vista Home Premium. I have an open source app that I want to be maximized when launched. How can I do this?
I've tried maximizing in 2 ways:
- Using the small square at the top right.
- Dragging the corners of the window to fill the screen.
In both cases, if I close and then re-open, the window has its default size.

In XP I was able to get my windows to remember to open maximized or at least full size. Is there a way to get them to open full size or maximized in Vista? Every time I open a new window (don't like the tabs) it opens small (about the size of this Post Message box!). While it's not a major deal to make it full screen, I'm getting tired of it!
I did download (free version) TweakVI to get rid of the shortcut arrows on my desktop icons - don't know if that is a feature for that in there like in the TweakUI program or not. I did try to search for this, but wasn't sure what it's actually called to produce good results (I got a lot of blue screen responses, so I know my search string was WAY off.)

how to I reset the default window size and position of Vista Media Center? I somehow managed to either re-size it or move it off of the reachable portion of the desktop. If I go non-maximized the window shrinks off up towards the top and disappears. If I try and select move or size it takes me to the top of the screen and shows the arrows to move and size, but I cannot find or move / size the window. Is there a way to reset the default window position?

when I open Windows mail from the command bar it goes straight to the taskbar and I have to click it to open in a normal window. How can I get it to open in a normal window like it's supposed to do? This is in IE7 64bit, it opens normally in the 32bit version. When it is minimized in the taskbar any left or right click will open it so I cannot just right click it and use a command. I've tried all the obvious stuff and nothing seems to work.

I didn't know anything about GIF images until today when I discovered I had to change a JPEG's image background to transparent. I downloaded an image editing program (Coral Paint Shop Pro) and after about two hours of trial and error I only got to changing the background to a solid colour (light red), after which I deleted the program because ALL my image files were redirected there when I clicked on them (instead of Windows Photo Viewer and such).
Now I want to know if and how I can make the background transparent without image editing software. I followed one online suggestion which was to:
- Open MO Excel
- Under the "Insert" tab click "Picture" and upload image
- Under the "Format" tab click "Recolor" and choose "Set Transparent Color", then choose the color you want transparent and click on it...but that only gave me an image I wanted in an Excel spreadsheet which I couldn't save as a GIF in any program I tried.

Dell Inspiron 1545 notebook running Vista Home Premium. Automatic Updates is "on". I suspect this is not strictly a Vista problem, but the user base may know of a solution. I also suspect the problem is with a Dell-specific service or application but that may be supported by underlying Vista services. I find references to a similar service for HP notebooks. When I got my computer about 6 weeks ago, a transparent popup would appear briefly and then disappear when the caps lock key was toggled. It indicated the new state of the key and an icon was also placed in the Notification Area when the state was "locked". A similar action took place if I toggled the "radio" button (F2) and a battery information window appeared it the "battery" key (F3) was pressed.
That worked for a week or so, then stopped working. I did many searches on The Internet and in the Dell Community Forums for a solution. No joy. Then one day, it mysteriously started working again. It worked for 3 days which spanned several times when the computer went into standby and when it went into hibernation each evening. A series of security updates came down from Microsoft which required reboot. The popups went away and in many more hours of research, I have been unable to find a solution....

Want to bring the look of the Windows 7 taskbar and interface to Windows Vista? Thanks to the hard work of a dedicated Vista user, everyone can download a special visual style for Windows Vista that will transform your pc. Â
Before you can install the new visual style the visual style engine must be patched to allow non-Microsoft visual styles. Check out my article on using VistaGlazz to do that...
