Transparent Popup Appear Briefly And Disappear

Oct 21, 2009

Dell Inspiron 1545 notebook running Vista Home Premium. Automatic Updates is "on". I suspect this is not strictly a Vista problem, but the user base may know of a solution. I also suspect the problem is with a Dell-specific service or application but that may be supported by underlying Vista services. I find references to a similar service for HP notebooks. When I got my computer about 6 weeks ago, a transparent popup would appear briefly and then disappear when the caps lock key was toggled. It indicated the new state of the key and an icon was also placed in the Notification Area when the state was "locked". A similar action took place if I toggled the "radio" button (F2) and a battery information window appeared it the "battery" key (F3) was pressed.

That worked for a week or so, then stopped working. I did many searches on The Internet and in the Dell Community Forums for a solution. No joy. Then one day, it mysteriously started working again. It worked for 3 days which spanned several times when the computer went into standby and when it went into hibernation each evening. A series of security updates came down from Microsoft which required reboot. The popups went away and in many more hours of research, I have been unable to find a solution....

X64 - Window Shows Briefly At Shutdown

Jun 21, 2009

I've been using my Vista x64 ultimate for a little over a year now - For a few months now, I've noticed that when I click the "shut down" from the start menu (after shutting down all running applications), a small window flashes on the screen (as though the OS brought an app from the background to the foreground to close it). In just about a second, that window vanishes and the PC shuts down normally.

I'm not sure what that window is and while it is not causing any apparent problem, I'm curious to know what that application is. I've ruled out NIS 2009 & Logitech mouse application - by shutting these down before trying to shut down and by looking at the processes, I am unable to figure out what this might be

Command Prompt Ordinary Or Administrator It Flashes Up Briefly And Then Vanishes

Sep 24, 2008

Vista Business + SP1. Very recently on opening Command Prompt ordinary or Administrator it flashes up briefly and then vanishes. THis happens whatever mode I use to open it. Start/Run/system32 etc.
I tried system restore but no joy. I can in fact get round this as I have put into System 32 the Cmd file from XP and this works as does the similar from W2000 but I would like to get my Vista one back. I cant see anything except it flashes up for two seconds so its there . Is this a corrupt registry entry. I did run SFC but no joy.

How Can I Change A GIF Image Background To Transparent?

Jan 25, 2009

I didn't know anything about GIF images until today when I discovered I had to change a JPEG's image background to transparent. I downloaded an image editing program (Coral Paint Shop Pro) and after about two hours of trial and error I only got to changing the background to a solid colour (light red), after which I deleted the program because ALL my image files were redirected there when I clicked on them (instead of Windows Photo Viewer and such).

Now I want to know if and how I can make the background transparent without image editing software. I followed one online suggestion which was to:

- Open MO Excel
- Under the "Insert" tab click "Picture" and upload image
- Under the "Format" tab click "Recolor" and choose "Set Transparent Color", then choose the color you want transparent and click on it...but that only gave me an image I wanted in an Excel spreadsheet which I couldn't save as a GIF in any program I tried.

Unchecking Transparent Glass, Shadows Under Menu

Apr 29, 2008

I have had my computer for a little over a year now and I run Windows Vista Ultimate edition. All of a sudden a couple days ago I noticed that everything now has an annoying shadow on it. Desktop icons, tool bar, web browser text, microsoft word text, every little bit of text and icons. I have tried going to control panel, under the visual
effects tab and unchecking transparent glass, shadows under menu, shadows under mouse pointer, and use drop shadows for desktop icons. I have also tried changing my desktop theme and wallpaper. So far nothing has worked.

Transparent Start Menu Windows Blinds From Stradock

Aug 15, 2009

Is the Start Menu in Vista Premium 64-bit supposed to be transparent? If so, mine is not, and I would prefer that it was. Is there some tweak that I am missing? I am running the Aero Glass desktop, but my Start Menu is still opaque. I have tried a dozen 3rd party programs, to no avail. WindowBlinds from Stardock wreaks havoc on my desktop settings. Does anyone have a clue as to how to make and desktop (and perhaps the right-click context menu) transparent?

Multi Monitor Bug: Make Sure Aero Is Enabled, And That Your Taskbar Is Always Transparent

Jun 23, 2008

I think I've found a bug with the way Vista handles dual screens and wallpapers. I'm sure there are PLENTY of us who have dual monitors. For those of you who do, try this:

1. Make sure Aero is enabled, and that your taskbar is always transparent.
2. Download any dual screen capable wallpaper program. For instance, Ultramon, DisplayFusion, etc.
3. Set a DIFFERENT WALLPAPER PER MONITOR. Make sure to do this.
4. Observe?

You'll see THROUGH the transparency of the taskbar that the wallpaper schema is screwed up. There is a small part of the wallpaper that is cut off at the bottom right, around the system tray icons, and looks like the wallpaper repeating, or is confused with the wallpaper on the secondary monitor............

Flash Player And Get The Popup From UAC

Adobe Flash is not working in any of the programs that use it unless I run the program as administrator, then it works fine. However, I do not want to be forever having to run all my programs as administrator because either I have to right click and do it, or set it to run as administrator which means I get the popup from UAC. I didn't have flash installed. I have tried all the solutions offered on the adobe site several times and none of them will work.

Downloads Disappear & Or Not Run

Mar 6, 2009

I am trying to help with windows Vista basic IE 8 (had IE7) with problem downloading files which then just do not get saved to disk where it should be (or anywhere for that matter). The user account is has administrator privilages but it seems as if for downloads they do not or at least it acts that way. It is not even running the programs when told to in the download choices. It goes through the normal appearance of downloading and saving the file from the temp folder but then poof is not saved to disk at designated store point.

I have used a work around for now by using the Administrator account and can download through that but do not want to expose that account for long. Is there some permission or registry fix for this problem. I have checked all IE settings in control panel but they are all good for downloads. I did install IE 8 to ssee if that would fix problem but still the same.

Make Maximized Windows & Taskbar Transparent + Automated UXtheme Patcher

Apr 13, 2007

Throughout the beta process Microsoft received a lot of feedback on how the taskbar and the window border changes to black when you maximize a window.  Before the final release they altered the behavior slightly so the window and taskbar would still turn opaque and black, but with a very slight tint of color that matches the color of your glass. This change satisfied some users but left others still in the dark. Many users wanted a maximized window to remain transparent as well as the taskbar. Once the final build of Windows Vista shipped, all hope was gone that we would have transparent maximized windows, until today.

Using a very cool and free utility called VistaGlazz by CodeGazer.com you can easily make your maximized windows and taskbar transparent.  Additionally, this utility allows you to easily patch your uxtheme system files so that you can use hacked visual styles with just the click of a button, instead of the multiple step manual procedure.

Spyware And Adware: Gets Popup When IE Starts

May 1, 2009

Running Windows XP my cousin ended up with an infestation of spyware and adware after AVG ran out and it stopped updating.I installed AVG 8.5 ran a scan, it disinfected winlogon.exe and then blue screened. After a reboot and another scan winlogon.exe was no longer infected but other files were. It seems to have disinfected them. The only thing left is a popup that comes up everytime IE is started. I can't figure out what is causing it. I ran ad aware - it disposed of a few things but he still gets that popup when IE starts.

IE7 Update: Switched On Popup Blocker

Feb 25, 2009

I run a little website which has a popup survey on it. one of my colleagues was just testing it and said that the popup is no longer appearing. On further investigation, her Popup Blocker was on (despite her never changing the settings herself) and the popup was fine. However, our statistics show a dramatic fall in the number of people filling out the survey over the last week, and a high percentage of our customers are IE7 users. My theory is that Microsoft have recently released an IE7 update that resets your Popup Blocker to "on", meaning that no-one can see my survey any more.

Desktop Icons Disappear

Sep 21, 2009

I been having this problem with my Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit. Basically it has been happening over the past 2-3 days. What the problem is that when I start up my laptop it boots up and loads everything on start-up then about 10 - 15 seconds after my desktop icons disappear. I have googled the problem and read some solutions but none have worked.

I have tried to go into regedit and make sure the shell was set to explorer.exe, ran scans with Webroot Anti-virus with Anti-spyware, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, also SuperAnti-Spyware. I ran these both in regular Windows start up and in safe mode. Also when I go to processes I will end the explorer process and then create a new task "explorer.exe" it appears with the desktop than again 10 - 15 seconds it disappears. My computer is new only about two weeks old now.
