Spyware And Adware: Gets Popup When IE Starts

May 1, 2009

Running Windows XP my cousin ended up with an infestation of spyware and adware after AVG ran out and it stopped updating.I installed AVG 8.5 ran a scan, it disinfected winlogon.exe and then blue screened. After a reboot and another scan winlogon.exe was no longer infected but other files were. It seems to have disinfected them. The only thing left is a popup that comes up everytime IE is started. I can't figure out what is causing it. I ran ad aware - it disposed of a few things but he still gets that popup when IE starts.

Adware

Dec 20, 2008

I am using the 2008 free version of Adaware. (My computer has Vista) I did a full scan and after 13 seconds found over 5000 infections. I right clicked and selected the entire list to delete. A window came up that asked me to confirm I wanted to delete the files. I selected delete, but the window still showed the same number infections. It recommended a second scan, but the program crashed when I hit scan. I have restarted my computer several times, repeating the process, but I get the same results every time. I'd really appreciate help on this because this is an abnormally high amount of infections (most of them being malware).

Reinstall IE7 To Remove Adware?

Mar 23, 2008

My daughter managed to download some malware onto her computer (she doesn't know how she did it). The various anti-virus, firewall, and anti-malware (including Defender, Spybot, ZoneAlarm Pro and AdAware) do not catch this malware. The malware opens Internet Explorer windows with ads. Investigating the computer with Sypbot and others, the malware seems to be "1 mags 16 more" and "BEND BOLT". I've disabled these programs with Spybot, but of course have no way to uninstall these programs.

Unfortunately, a side-effect is that this has prevented IE from running at all. When attempting to start IE7, nothing happens (no error message; it just doesn't start). Would it help to uninstall IE7 and then reinstall it from scratch? If so, how do I go about it (and where do I find the IE7 download -- I don't seem to be able to find it on the Microsoft website)? I'd like to avoid a full hard drive reformat, if possible.

Not Run ActiveX Due To A Corruption From The Adware/virus

Mar 23, 2008

I had some infected files removed from my system last night. The tech informed me that because my system will not run ActiveX due to a corruption from the adware/virus that I needed to contact my vendor to do a system file scan and repair. What are my options at this point? Do I need to re-install or repair Vista? Will that correct the problem?

Flash Player And Get The Popup From UAC

Mar 23, 2008

Adobe Flash is not working in any of the programs that use it unless I run the program as administrator, then it works fine. However, I do not want to be forever having to run all my programs as administrator because either I have to right click and do it, or set it to run as administrator which means I get the popup from UAC. I didn't have flash installed. I have tried all the solutions offered on the adobe site several times and none of them will work.

Is there a way to set constant UAC popup window positions? It appears in different places on the screen depending on application, for example while starting Total Commander with administrator's right the UAC window appears at the left low corner, Symantec Endpoint Protection - at the middle of the screen's bottom. It's not a big problem of course, but maybe it is possible to fix such behavior?

How To Remove Spyware?

Apr 6, 2009

I have a Vista computer with the following Antivirus / spyware removal programs

- Eset NOD32 v2.7
- Spy bot search and destry
- SuperAntispyware
- Ad aware
- Windows defender

All the software is updated with the latest "definitions"

2 firewalls (1 windows firewall, 1.with the router)

Do I need more software like that to be safe?

I think this is too much software installed to just take care of virus and spyware threats. For it seems like virus is not soo big problem any more. Soo I am wondering isnt it possible to for Microsoft to make something "supersmart" to get rid of spy ware??

IE7 Update: Switched On Popup Blocker

Feb 25, 2009

I run a little website which has a popup survey on it. one of my colleagues was just testing it and said that the popup is no longer appearing. On further investigation, her Popup Blocker was on (despite her never changing the settings herself) and the popup was fine. However, our statistics show a dramatic fall in the number of people filling out the survey over the last week, and a high percentage of our customers are IE7 users. My theory is that Microsoft have recently released an IE7 update that resets your Popup Blocker to "on", meaning that no-one can see my survey any more.

Transparent Popup Appear Briefly And Disappear

Oct 21, 2009

Dell Inspiron 1545 notebook running Vista Home Premium. Automatic Updates is "on". I suspect this is not strictly a Vista problem, but the user base may know of a solution. I also suspect the problem is with a Dell-specific service or application but that may be supported by underlying Vista services. I find references to a similar service for HP notebooks. When I got my computer about 6 weeks ago, a transparent popup would appear briefly and then disappear when the caps lock key was toggled. It indicated the new state of the key and an icon was also placed in the Notification Area when the state was "locked". A similar action took place if I toggled the "radio" button (F2) and a battery information window appeared it the "battery" key (F3) was pressed.

That worked for a week or so, then stopped working. I did many searches on The Internet and in the Dell Community Forums for a solution. No joy. Then one day, it mysteriously started working again. It worked for 3 days which spanned several times when the computer went into standby and when it went into hibernation each evening. A series of security updates came down from Microsoft which required reboot. The popups went away and in many more hours of research, I have been unable to find a solution....

I reinstalled my Windows Vista Home Premium, but now it says my key isn't valid. So I kind of ignored it for a while, but now I get that tiny text in the lower-right corner, and the Aero theme is gone. I tried to solve it with that pop up I got. I had to type 9 keys of 6 numbers in my telephone, and I got a key back. That 'woman' on the telephone said we were going to activate my XP?) After that it said my Windows was activated. So I clicked on Close, and I kept getting that popup and messages.
