For many years I have been using a batch file to back up files later than a
specific date to a temporary directory. I then copy them to an external hard
drive. My new computer has Vista business. I am unable to get the batch file
to work. Would someone please help?

I've been reading a lot on the internet about vista problems, errors, etc. and one of the first checks someone tells the OP is run sfc. Well more than likely if they are posting in a forum asking for help, they don't know how to do it, or what it does. That's the main batch file I made, I also made one to show wireless signal strength, one to defrag the hard drive, and one to clear the dns cache. I know its not much but I'm just trying to help some of the folks that dont know vista so well and are having a hard time... I'm working on some finishing touches so they look nice then I'm zipping them up and posting them here
View 9 Replies View RelatedMy company installs our software on about 50 computers a day. Included with that install is a remote-login software. In order for everything to work properly, we have to make a user, elevate that user to administrator, hide the user, and set power settings correctly. In xp, this is no problem, and up until now, we've required our clients have 2000 or xp. As vista is now over a year old, we're adding support for it too.
My problem is that the batch file I've written to handle adding a user and setting the computer properly requires administrative rights (see 'add user'). Everything I've read says something along the lines of 'right click, run as administrator' or 'to turn off uac, do this.' These are not options for me. The people installing this software are usually about computer savy as my grandmother, so I can't have them performing extra steps beyond 'click here. this pops up. click here. this happens. click here.' I'm ok with with boxes popping up asking for permission, but I can't assume they'll understand right-click. I need to know how to raise my permission level from the command line. I need to be able to do this on any computer, no matter the computer name, administrator name, etc.
To rename a file, you do not need to open the file in a program.
Right-click the file that you want to rename, and then click Rename.
Type the new name, and then press ENTER. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
Tip
You can also rename several files at once. If you give files of the same type the same name, each file will have the same name followed by a different sequential number (such as Renamed File (2), Renamed File (3), and so on). This can be useful for grouping related items. To do this, select all the files you want to rename, and then follow the same steps as you would for renaming an individual file. Each of the files will be saved with the new name, and a different sequential number will be appended automatically to the end of each file name.
I've got a Dell D830 with Vista Ultimate 32-bit pre-installed. It's got the max 4GB of RAM installed. I do not yet own any software or hardware which claims it can benefit from 64-bit so what are the advantages? I will not be doing any gaming but I will be doing a lot of batch processing of camera RAW files with Photoshop CS3. The guys in the Photoshop forum said there is no benefit really unless I was able to load more RAM.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am running Vista Ultimate 32 bit. I have a folder on my desktop named Downloads that I use for, shockingly, downloads. Anyway, there are a couple of files in the folder that are, apparently, not really there. They are like ghost files. They used to exist but now they are still visible but not recognized by any program. Also, they have a size of 0 kb!
I'd like to get rid of them but they refuse to be deleted. When I try to delete them, I get this:

While installing a program, the process was interrupted and the install created 62000 files using 160gig in my syswow64 folder virtually using all my hd space. However when you go into the syswow64 folder, there is only about 2000 files and 1 gig of space used. I have set the folders to show all hidden files. When I go into the ms dos prompt and do a directory, the files match the 1 gig data.
I can't delete these 62000 files and free up the 160 gig space because I don't believe they are actually there on the hard drive but explorer thinks they are there. Is there any way to rebuild, sync, or otherwise get windows explorer to recognize the correct amount of files that are actually in my syswow64 folder.(2000files 1gig and not 62000files 160gig)
I am unable to get the Screensaver to work on my laptop that has Vista. Any thoughts on how I can get it to work? I have taken it back for service and no one can figure it out.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI am trying to run a batch file in vista as an administrator. I know I can use the RUNAS command, but this prompts me for a password. (and what password is a mystery to me as it's a non domain machine and there isn't a user called administrator, but that's besides the point). What I am looking to do is to replicate the behaviour of Right Clicking on the batch file and clicking 'Run as administrator', then the security box comes up - this is fine, that is EXACTLY what I want to happen. The user already has adminitrator privilages and I understand that I'll never get around the security box coming up - I don't mind this, but I can't seem to find a way of replicating this.

When I click on any of the icons, it says that the 'certificate is invalid or corrupted' and wants me to reinstall it. Is there some way of repairing this short of a complete reinstall? I have the Roxio disk supplied by Dell and I was hoping to get away with not having to completely reinstall the program. I have no luck with that stuff.

I have been unzipping files in Vista with no problem, after the download of AVG 9 I am unable to open them.
When I right click on the file I do not get Extract all in the list.
I do not know which is the program that opens zip files within Vista and so I am unable to tell it which program to Open with.
I own a Toshiba Qosmio x300(running on Vista home premium x64) and recently my oldest laptop, HP (windows XP pro x32), died from overheating.
Lucky for me, the hdd is still alive as I have some VERY important files on it (Work related)
The problem is that I cannot retrieve them:

I inserted my HP's hdd into my Toshiba.
(tried booting from XP but could not start windows since it seems to crash after the loading screen with the XP logo) (Also tried booting in safe mode, but same result)
So, I booted successfully from vista.
when I try to access the "My Documents" folder of the windows XP administrator account from windows vista, it says: Access denied.
I tried also making an administrator account from vista(exact name, case sensitive and same password) hoping to achieve success but no such luck.. I tried various software unlockers but none of them worked.
Computer is just a year old, came with Works installed. For some unknown reason the problem began: could not open document files with Works. This worked in the past, but suddenly I could not open these files.

Every few days i try to open various emails via the paperclip with attchments such as .jpg files and the window opens up " Windows cannot find"xxxxxxxx.jpg". Kake sure you have typed the name correctly and then try again."
I can only open them if i save the attachment this happens to all emails in my inbox.
I have cured this in the past by doing a system restore going back a couple of days and things are good for 2 or 3 days then the same thing happens.
Ive just installed Vista Ultimate 64 bit on my comp and im having trouble sharing files with another computer that has WinXP 32bit installed. Ive checked that the workgroup names are the same and that file sharing is enabled, but it wont allow me to access files on my vista machine FROM the winxp machine. I have no trouble accessing files on the winxp machine from my vista machine, but it wont work the other way around. It gives me an access denied error due to permissions, even though I let it have full control. Could this be because the 32bit is clashing with the 64 bit? Because I previously have winxp installed on both machines and file sharing was working fine.

I'm trying to create a batch file so that I can bring up 2 sites at one time when I open my browser. I use Firefox & IE8. What I have done so far to no avail is created a file as follows and sent to desktop from notepad named test.bat:
without parenthesis in the above. I can get these to open consecutively, same browser window if I have a browser already open. But, not without browser open. How do I connect the 2 sites to open in 2 tabs, same window? I also added them as multi home pages, then sent shortcut to browser to desktop. This does work, but, not what I want.
Is there anyway to create a batch file and have these 2 sites open at start up, by-passing the desktop without clicking to open the browser? Also, I know that clicking on the shortcut to the browser that's on the desktop does slow down the launching process. If there is another way upon start up, will it be slower as well?
I have recently bought a new laptop which runs Vista Business, the problem I am getting is with Access. With my work I use Access databases which have the following files (please be aware I am an absolute novice when it comes to Access I literally fill in the blanks) "rpt.mdb" and "rpt_be.mdb". To start the database I double click rpt.mdb to bring up the front end of my report writing software. When I do this now the screen I usually get isn't complete and I can't access any data or input anything. The files were originally created in Access 2003 and they don't seemed to have converted over well.
View 0 Replies View RelatedI have a home office network with one new Dell laptop with Windows Vista Home Basic which I bought a couple of weeks ago, one desktop with Windows XP Pro and one older laptop with Windows XP Pro. The laptops are connected wirelessly, the desktop is using a wired Ethernet connection.
Obviously, there have been never a problem with XP machines. Initially, the Vista machine was also able to connect to everybody else. I didn't even bother to look at the settings because everything worked. Then I went to a business trip, and connected to other networks, including wireless public ones in the airports. When I came back, I was unable to share files or even see other computers on the LAN. The internet connection is working fine though. Oh yes, and I also installed a couple of updates, probably some of those constituting Service Pack 1 as well.
When I checked the network, to my surprise, it turned out that it became "Public" (could this be "guilt by association" - the airport wireless networks are public, so my home network is public, too?). I changed it to "Private". Didn't help. Checked shares, made sure that the users have the same passwords. Ditto. I deleted the history of the airport networks. Still the same.........
5 days ago I posted a problem about not being able to download exe files and not being able to install programs from CD's. The problem had been addressed a couple of years ago and none of those solutions worked, along with no recent listings of the problem. What did I do wrong on my post that I had no comments, suggestions or assistance offered at all?

I have been unable to view these. Seems like there isn't an application on the new machine that will open the files in photo parade format.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI can't seem to Un zip my zipped files. What I am trying to do is unzip brushes for GIMP (it's like photoshop) and the brushes need to be unzipped and placed in a folder in GIMPS brush folder for them to work.
I download the files and go to unzip them but the icon has changed (to a firefox symbol). My comp tells me that its a zip file but the option for unzipping just isn't there and I can't figure out what program they need to be opend with in order to get them to unzip. If thats even what the solution is. What am I to do?
