Running Batch File
Sep 25, 2009
I am trying to run a batch file in vista as an administrator. I know I can use the RUNAS command, but this prompts me for a password. (and what password is a mystery to me as it's a non domain machine and there isn't a user called administrator, but that's besides the point). What I am looking to do is to replicate the behaviour of Right Clicking on the batch file and clicking 'Run as administrator', then the security box comes up - this is fine, that is EXACTLY what I want to happen. The user already has adminitrator privilages and I understand that I'll never get around the security box coming up - I don't mind this, but I can't seem to find a way of replicating this.

Whenever I write a batch script that provides options using 'if' statements, and input a semicolon, it terminates unexpectedly. Is there a way to prevent this? ~Is there a way I can write the batch file so that it doesn't terminate when I have a semicolon in the input?

To rename a file, you do not need to open the file in a program.
Right-click the file that you want to rename, and then click Rename.
Type the new name, and then press ENTER. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
Tip
You can also rename several files at once. If you give files of the same type the same name, each file will have the same name followed by a different sequential number (such as Renamed File (2), Renamed File (3), and so on). This can be useful for grouping related items. To do this, select all the files you want to rename, and then follow the same steps as you would for renaming an individual file. Each of the files will be saved with the new name, and a different sequential number will be appended automatically to the end of each file name.

I'm trying to create a batch file so that I can bring up 2 sites at one time when I open my browser. I use Firefox & IE8. What I have done so far to no avail is created a file as follows and sent to desktop from notepad named test.bat:
without parenthesis in the above. I can get these to open consecutively, same browser window if I have a browser already open. But, not without browser open. How do I connect the 2 sites to open in 2 tabs, same window? I also added them as multi home pages, then sent shortcut to browser to desktop. This does work, but, not what I want.
Is there anyway to create a batch file and have these 2 sites open at start up, by-passing the desktop without clicking to open the browser? Also, I know that clicking on the shortcut to the browser that's on the desktop does slow down the launching process. If there is another way upon start up, will it be slower as well?

how to make a batch file where you could start, disable, stop and manual for a service from the command prompt? for example instead of going to services.msc and right clicking on a service then clicking on properties then making the startup to be manual, automatic or disable. I could do with a batch file where i would just launch the batch file and it would make the startup to manual and then disable the service that i want to disable.

I have an Acer Travelmate 6292 running Vista. When I connect a monitor and close the lid of the notebook, the CPU jupms to 100% utilisation and the notebook becomes extremley slow. I have changed the power settings for Lid Closed to "Do nothing" If I leave the lid a little open, it operates ok. Only when the lid is virtualy closed does the problem occur.

Had to format my hard drive and I used Windows to save my files on an external hard drive. Now I have Windows up and running again but cannot select files that I need to reload on my computer because they are in VHD format. I can do a complete restore, again using Windows, but all that will do will put the corrupt file back on my machine. Does anybody know how I can access these files another way?

It looks like my Media PC restarted while Media Centre was still running and somehow it has corrupted a couple of DLL files.
OLEACC.DLL
WINTRUST.DLL
I have tried running System File Checker, while confirmed that some files were corrupted, but it couldn't fix them. Eventually I worked out how to change the permissions on those files so that I can manually replace them, but can't find a fresh file to replace them with, either on the Vista DVD or on the Net.

I've been reading a lot on the internet about vista problems, errors, etc. and one of the first checks someone tells the OP is run sfc. Well more than likely if they are posting in a forum asking for help, they don't know how to do it, or what it does. That's the main batch file I made, I also made one to show wireless signal strength, one to defrag the hard drive, and one to clear the dns cache. I know its not much but I'm just trying to help some of the folks that dont know vista so well and are having a hard time... I'm working on some finishing touches so they look nice then I'm zipping them up and posting them here

My company installs our software on about 50 computers a day. Included with that install is a remote-login software. In order for everything to work properly, we have to make a user, elevate that user to administrator, hide the user, and set power settings correctly. In xp, this is no problem, and up until now, we've required our clients have 2000 or xp. As vista is now over a year old, we're adding support for it too.
My problem is that the batch file I've written to handle adding a user and setting the computer properly requires administrative rights (see 'add user'). Everything I've read says something along the lines of 'right click, run as administrator' or 'to turn off uac, do this.' These are not options for me. The people installing this software are usually about computer savy as my grandmother, so I can't have them performing extra steps beyond 'click here. this pops up. click here. this happens. click here.' I'm ok with with boxes popping up asking for permission, but I can't assume they'll understand right-click. I need to know how to raise my permission level from the command line. I need to be able to do this on any computer, no matter the computer name, administrator name, etc.

I've got a Dell D830 with Vista Ultimate 32-bit pre-installed. It's got the max 4GB of RAM installed. I do not yet own any software or hardware which claims it can benefit from 64-bit so what are the advantages? I will not be doing any gaming but I will be doing a lot of batch processing of camera RAW files with Photoshop CS3. The guys in the Photoshop forum said there is no benefit really unless I was able to load more RAM.

I ran sfc/scannow in administrator mode and it said it had found some corrupt files that it was unable to fix. I opened the C:WindowsLogsCBS directory and it contained 5 files: CBS,CBS.persist,CheckSUR,CheckSUR.persist and Filterlist. I attempted to open CBS but a message says " Access is denied ". The same applied to CBS.persist. I am able to open CheckSUR, CheckSUR.persist and Filterlist. Upon opening properties on these three files the date created, modified and accessed is May-28-09. The dates for CBS are as follows: Created: November-27-08; Modified: June-15-09; Accessed: May-31-09. The dates for CBS.persist are: Created: November-27-08; Modified May-31-09; Accessed:November-27-08. The CBS file is apparently 15.7 MB and the CBS.persist file is 50.2 MB. access the relevant CBS file?

when i turn on my computer, an error message comes saying "Windows failed to load because a file is missing or corrupt File: Netio.sys Status: 0xc0000221" This started when i was clearing my computer of useless programs, and after i deleted Realtime player or Quicktime player, (can't remember which) an error message jumped from the taskbar saying something about Network device driver. After that every time i start the computer, the "Windows failed to load" message pops up. The first half a year, it was solved by pressing enter, to "Choose an operating system to start: Windows Vista" and then to "Windows error recovery (start windows normally, safe mode etc)" and back to "Windows failed to start", repeating it 3-20 times. Then i had a familiar "Unexpected shutdown" during a game, and now, the "Enter spamming technique" doesn't work anymore. All i can access at the moment is Windows memory diagnostic tool, and Bios setup utility. Is there any way to fix this through the setup utility or some other manner?

I can't find a way to search for file types in Vista without entering part of a file name. For example, if I want to search my C drive for all PDF files or all photos, the search function won't work without entering text from a file name (which doesn't work, because all files of a particular type don't necessarily share letters or characteristics in their names). Has anyone else experienced this problem, or am I missing something?

Whenever I request a "File|Open" or "File|Save" from any application, the mini-Windows-Explorer dialog box that opens freezes and hangs the entire application. Happens with almost all applications. Not limited to just Microsoft programs. It does not matter if I like change the download folder or if I rt click always the same.
Back when it was under warranty Hp tells me to just restore to original settings. I hate to do that. But I am about to see that this might be the only fix for it. (But I am hoping not.) I think it started a long time ago when I was changing the USB ports I used for my external Hard drive and it changed drive letter. (maybe maybe not.. just seems I remember that being something that had happened when I first recall things hanging...) anyway I have all drives in the place I want them now and this issue still happens even if I dont have that external drive plugged in.

When I open a folder with a list of files for all View Options, the files are not listed in proper ascending sequence. I indexed the files to make sure that indexing may not be the factor in the Sort By Name not working properly. After the files were indexed, clicked the Sort By Name item in the View menu item, and the files are stilled not sorted porperly. Has anyone encountered this similar problem ? I suspect this may be a bug in Windows Vista File System. The folder had 87 files in it.

When I open a folder of files anywhere in Vista Ultimate, the file icons appear all white (blank) with the file name underneath. If I switch the View to medium or extra large file icons they appear normal and when I switch the view back to large, they again appear normal. However, after a few minutes, when I open the same folder, they are again all white (blank).

I had tried to move a file from another folder to my desktop. File move was taking forever and I had cancelled out. But it created a file on my desktop which is corrupted and the original file is corrupted (neither will open). I cannot delete this file from my desktop or other location now and it has seemed to slow down my PC. When I try to delete, I get a popup box that says "Recycling 1 item... from Desktop, Discovered 0 items (0 bytes)" and it just stays in an neverending do loop. After looking on internet, I have seen that Vista has issues deleting or even moving files.

Microsoft removed the legacy Windows Help .hlp file viewer, winhlp32.exe, from Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 and 2008 R2. Dating back to Windows 3.1, Microsoft says the Windows Help components have not been updated in years and no longer meets internal standards. If you have an older application that still uses .hlp files and must be able to view .hlp files Microsoft has released an add-on that will restore the viewer...

My elderly Mother's Vista PC isn't working, and as she relies on this for shopping etc I need to get it working (I am several hundred miles from her). The PC tried to install the latest Vista updates (20/2/2008) but upon restart she gets the message "Windows failed to restart - a recent hardware/software change may be the cause - File windowssystem32winload.exe "The selected file could not be loaded". She doesn't have a start in "normal mode" option. I have walked her through trying system repair/restore using the Vista installation Cd, but after trying to restore she gets the message; "system restore failed due to an unspecified error; "cannot create a file when that file already exists" (0x800700b7) We have tried 3 different restore points with the same result.

I have a problem that appears in the MS Office 2007 applications but I suspect it is a Vista issue.....hence my post here. I am saving a new Excel file to a directory and I want to give it a similar name as a text file that already resides in that directory. However, when I "Save As" the Excel file in the selected directory, the only other files I see in that directory are other Excel files. I don't see any of the other files that I know are in there (Word, Powerpoint, pdf, etc.). In prior versions of Excel, I have been able to see all of the files in a
destination directory....is that still possible with Office 2007 with Windows Vista?
