Had to format my hard drive and I used Windows to save my files on an external hard drive. Now I have Windows up and running again but cannot select files that I need to reload on my computer because they are in VHD format. I can do a complete restore, again using Windows, but all that will do will put the corrupt file back on my machine. Does anybody know how I can access these files another way?

When I check the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties it shows as greyed but deselected and I have not found a way to enable this option. Similarly under Notification Area Tab the Power option inder System Icons also is greyed and deselected. Can anyone tell me how to select this 'Show Window previews (thumbnails)' and 'Power' options.
View 6 Replies View RelatedMy "Windows Contact" file has different addresses in it than the list that comes up when I "Select Recipients". There are folders in the contact file that I use to be able to access. For example, with Outlook in XP you could have your main identies contacts and then other contacts or shared contacts. This use to be the case in my Windows Mail until recently. I don't know why but they're no longer there. When I choose "Windows Contacts" the correct list shows up with all the folders but I can't load them into an email without retyping the address manually. If I click on "To" or "Select Recipients" the list that comes up appears to be an old WAB file and not the correct addresses.
View 5 Replies View RelatedOne annoyance that I've found in Vista is that unlike all previous Windows versions that I've used, when I get a file selection menu, such as for opening a file within an application or 'save as...', if the list is a multicolumn one, as is usually the case, the ordering of the files is NOT vertical as it always had been before, but is horizontal.
Although I can see a logic in this, the fact is that when I'm faced with columns, my eye naturally reads down each column, and therefore I need the vertical sort arrangement as had always previously been the case.
Please, therefore, does anyone know of a fix for this, so that I can restore vertical sort arrangement in those lists?
Running Vista Home Prem 32bit Normally when working with Windows when you do something that opens a new Window, that new Window opens in the forefront. However that is not so in my case, the new Window opens behind and at times I don't even know the new Window has opened because it is behind and hidden from view. Is there a setting that you set to make the new Window open in front of all others?

Last night, I decided to connect my HDMI cord to the laptop and watch a few episodes of Lost with my friends. Now, the HDMI button ('F8') wasn't working properly after my little mishap a few months earlier. When I pressed it, the usual, nice little pictures of different laptop-tv settings did not appear. Instead, I tried FN+ALT+F8. This seemed to work. But after we finished, I couldn't get the screen to return to normal again. It's all fuzzy and big, as if I was still connected to the tv.
** I tried personlization, and fizing screen resolution and stuff. It made things a little better, but the screen STILL isn't the same. Funny thing though. When I use print screen, the screen looks NORMAL. This morning, I rebooted my laptop. (Probably the stupidest thing I've ever done) I thought everything would be back to normal, but the screen is still the same, the nice little extras about Vista I was missing before have not returned, and my internet connection is gone.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am trying to run a batch file in vista as an administrator. I know I can use the RUNAS command, but this prompts me for a password. (and what password is a mystery to me as it's a non domain machine and there isn't a user called administrator, but that's besides the point). What I am looking to do is to replicate the behaviour of Right Clicking on the batch file and clicking 'Run as administrator', then the security box comes up - this is fine, that is EXACTLY what I want to happen. The user already has adminitrator privilages and I understand that I'll never get around the security box coming up - I don't mind this, but I can't seem to find a way of replicating this.

When I connect a monitor and close the lid of the notebook, the CPU jupms to 100% utilisation and the notebook becomes extremley slow. I have changed the power settings for Lid Closed to "Do nothing" If I leave the lid a little open, it operates ok. Only when the lid is virtualy closed does the problem occur.

I'm currently using Vista and Office 2007 and everytime I click on an Excel file in Microsoft Internet Explorer it opens in Explorer. How can I change this so it opens in Excel. This was fairly easy to do in XP, I just can't seem to figure out how to do it in Vista.

I have tried running System File Checker, while confirmed that some files were corrupted, but it couldn't fix them. Eventually I worked out how to change the permissions on those files so that I can manually replace them, but can't find a fresh file to replace them with, either on the Vista DVD or on the Net.
Just reinstalled Vista (32) Untimate. Was haveing trouble installing SP1 and needed to get rid of a lot of junk so did a complete new install. Now WMP 11 will not play. Get a msg that says the following "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file." Get this msg when trying to play MP3, WMA and WMV's. Worked fine before reinstall. I tried ripping a track and it worked fine but after ripping would not play the file - rip both to MP3 and WMA. Downloaded Winamp and it works fine and plays all the files.

1) Open a folder with some files.
2) Click on a file. Pressing the arrow keys should move the file selection around (I call this the cursor).
3) Minimize the window.
4) Restore the window.
5) The cursor isn't on the file anymore. The current selected file has a gray background. Pressing arrow keys have no effect on the file selection. Does anyone know how to fix this?
I ran sfc/scannow in administrator mode and it said it had found some corrupt files that it was unable to fix. I opened the C:WindowsLogsCBS directory and it contained 5 files: CBS,CBS.persist,CheckSUR,CheckSUR.persist and Filterlist. I attempted to open CBS but a message says " Access is denied ". The same applied to CBS.persist. I am able to open CheckSUR, CheckSUR.persist and Filterlist. Upon opening properties on these three files the date created, modified and accessed is May-28-09. The dates for CBS are as follows: Created: November-27-08; Modified: June-15-09; Accessed: May-31-09. The dates for CBS.persist are: Created: November-27-08; Modified May-31-09; Accessed:November-27-08. The CBS file is apparently 15.7 MB and the CBS.persist file is 50.2 MB. access the relevant CBS file?

Why is the Explorer window showing different filenames than the command line window? It's not so much of an issue, as I'm currently completing a scheduled backup of this drive using Nero Burning ROM, and will be formatting it soon.
View 5 Replies View RelatedBefore SP1 was installed, whenever I created a new folder, and then clicked on the folder icon while I was changing the name from "New Folder" to whatever (or pressed <ENTER>), I would immediately go into that folder, so that I would not have to double-click it to go in. I remember I used to be able to select the first item and hold down the ctl or shift key select the end item and all the items inbetween would be highlighted for copy? Actually I had no problem with the WinXP Professional however the Dx10 and the 64-bit issue caught me and here I am with my problems. I have Samsung 931nwplus monitor and my video card is Palit 9600 GT SONIC. The native resolution of my monitor is 1440x900. On Winxp I had no problems and was able to set the native resolution. However, after I installed Vista x64 I am not able to select the native resolution. I tried it from nvidia panel (custom resolution) power-strip and so on but I the max resolution I can select is 1280x1024. I have installed the final drivers of nvidia. However, I am not sure I have the latest drivers for my monitor. On the web page it says that the said driver is for vista but not sure if it is also ok for x64?

It's only in certain programs and it's only when attempting to left-click drag.80% of the time i can not select text in Wordpad. And some other programs have behaved bad with left-click drag too. I have a Logitech MX510 mouse. I do not think they give drivers away online for x64 because they are assumed to come with Vista.

Instead of holding down CTRL and then clicking on all the files you want to select, Vista includes the option to check boxes to select items instead. This new feature can be a little hard to get used to at first, but after you use it for a little while, it will be helpful if you were a big user of the CTRL method.
This feature has helped me in situations where I had to select dozens of files or folders and would accidentally click in the wrong area and then I would loose all of my selections, forcing me to start over selecting folders. With the check box feature enabled, accidental clicks that lead to mass de-selection are no longer possible.

View 4 Replies View RelatedRunning Vista32 Home Prem, SP1. I run as administrator. I do NOT use any registry cleaners. I am not able to rename or move select folders. Even though they have been shared (as described below), the renaming and moving attempts have been only from the computer and account that initially created them. Have a folder (with many sub-folders) that I have been sharing without problem across my home network (don't know if the sharing is related to the renaming issue). A few weeks ago I found that the root shared folder and one of its sub-folders could not be renamed or moved, though I can still rename sub-sub-folders and create and modify files contained in any. I don't know if this is a recent development; it may be that that was the first time I felt the need to rename of more them.
I applied the "Take Ownership" merge from this forum to add take ownership to the context menu. I then applied the 'take ownership' at the root of the share. Even though the command window showed activity (and I could see 'success' or 'successful' repeatedly), afterward I still was not able to rename the root share or that one sub-folder. I then did 'take ownership' again for just the sub-folder; again the command window showed activity, but afterward still could not rename the sub-folder. And just to repeat, I was and am still ABLE to rename the sub-sub-folder. Thinking that maybe the network sharing was impacting this, I then removed the share capability AND the security settings from the shared root. Repeated take ownership; but no change. I then downloaded from this forum the "Fix_Rename_32_Bit_ Vista" registry merge and applied it. Tried again to rename the root share and the its sub-folder; again failed.
in XP i used to drag a box to select multipe files. now in vista when i click the mouse in windows explorer, it creates a horizontal line highlighting the file, and all its attributes going to the right. so when i click the mouse and drag (to get the box that selects multiple files) instead of the box coming up, it selects that one file and drags that one file. i'm not sure i explained my self clearly, but if anyone knows what i'm talking about

I've tried everything I could think of. I went into the sound properties, keep tryin to configure it to play a 5.1 sound system ( i recently got a hold of a Altec Lansing ADA995) and it shows the option to set it to a 5.1 surround sound but for some reason vista wont let me select that option?

When I move the pointer/arrow over an "X" I have noticed that if I try to click on the "X" (or whatever the button may be for that matter) I have to actually move the pointer so that it is above what I want to select. The odd thing is though, that this is not always the case. Sometimes the poiner works just fine. I have noticed that this does not happen on just certain applications; for the most part it just randomly happens. It does consistently happen howver with the items shown in the tray at the lower right portion of my screen.
