a solution to the "multiple select" problem in Vista? I'm referring to the inability to use "Shift-Select" and "Control-Select" on groups of names or files in Vista without loosing some of the selections.
I have a network share setup b/w a Vista Ultimate x32 and XP machines. Using the XP machine, I open the Vista hosted share but found some files "missing", ie. even though they physically exist in the Vista machine, I simply cannot see them from XP. Turns out that these files are missing the EVERYONE in the File Permissions (right click file, properties, security).
These are files downloaded using Firefox, and whether they are JPG, AVI, TXT, DOC, XLS they are all missing the EVERYONE permission. If I download the same files using Internet Explorer, the files get created with the EVERYONE permission. My current workarounds ... which none are desirable are this: - Use Internet Explorer- Add EVERYONE permission for each file manually (you have to do this one by one, can't select multiple files and perform bulk operation) - Use CMD line utilities like takeown and icacls. Note this is a secure home network, and while file sharing using EVEYRONE isn't the safest way to do this, I can finetune this later. The key problem at hand is what I've described above. FireFox create files with the full permissions, same way IE does.
Although solved I cannot explain. I have a new Dell desktop with Vista Home Premium SP1 (64) with Workgroups changed to MSHOME to match my older Dell running XP-HOme. Vista Networking and Sharing Control configured as Private and all Sharing 'On\\" except Password. No problem mapping to my XP's C, D and E partitions. Although Documents and Setting would open, not the \\"myfile\\" sub folder where I wanted to view Favorites and move some to my new computer.
After much trial and error found that if I specifically selected the Favorites folder and under properties chose Sharing and selected option to share, I then was successful at least in mapping this folder and transferring necessary files although I still could not open if attempted through the mapped C drive where I could not get beneath the Documents and Setting folder...
Not strictly Vista related but....Has anyone noticed problems using Facebook since IE8? (the problem may be their end but it seemed to coincide with IE8) things spring to mind. 1. Inability to use the upload a file (photo) feature 2. Clicking on "chat" which shows friends currently online does nothing.
I have set up a network but I can't expand either my computer's folder or the other computer on the network in order to access files that are in the public folders. I get the following error message "You might not have permission to use this network. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permission. The specified network provider name is invalid. In additon to this issue I have tried to share my C drive which when I go into computer and then right click on my C drive and then try to share the files through advanced, the box is check to share, but it remains showing unshared after I have done so.
Before SP1 was installed, whenever I created a new folder, and then clicked on the folder icon while I was changing the name from "New Folder" to whatever (or pressed <ENTER>), I would immediately go into that folder, so that I would not have to double-click it to go in. Since I installed SP1, this is not happening. Is there any way of re-enabling this feature?
Is there an easy way to select more than one item when trying to copy picture files to an email or website for sending over the internet? I remember I used to be able to select the first item and hold down the ctl or shift key select the end item and all the items inbetween would be highlighted for copy? Now, with windows vista, I have to click each one and sometimes it won't even let me do that, I have to do one at a time, depending on what I am doing.
I have bought a Vista x64 approximately one week ago. Actually I had no problem with the WinXP Professional however the Dx10 and the 64-bit issue caught me and here I am with my problems. I have Samsung 931nwplus monitor and my video card is Palit 9600 GT SONIC. The native resolution of my monitor is 1440x900. On Winxp I had no problems and was able to set the native resolution. However, after I installed Vista x64 I am not able to select the native resolution. I tried it from nvidia panel (custom resolution) power-strip and so on but I the max resolution I can select is 1280x1024. I have installed the final drivers of nvidia. However, I am not sure I have the latest drivers for my monitor. On the web page it says that the said driver is for vista but not sure if it is also ok for x64?
i dont suppose anyone else has had vista mouse issues? It's only in certain programs and it's only when attempting to left-click drag.80% of the time i can not select text in Wordpad. And some other programs have behaved bad with left-click drag too. I have a Logitech MX510 mouse. I do not think they give drivers away online for x64 because they are assumed to come with Vista.
Windows Vista includes a new method to select files when using explorer. Instead of holding down CTRL and then clicking on all the files you want to select, Vista includes the option to check boxes to select items instead. This new feature can be a little hard to get used to at first, but after you use it for a little while, it will be helpful if you were a big user of the CTRL method.
This feature has helped me in situations where I had to select dozens of files or folders and would accidentally click in the wrong area and then I would loose all of my selections, forcing me to start over selecting folders. With the check box feature enabled, accidental clicks that lead to mass de-selection are no longer possible.
Enabling the new feature is very easy, just about anyone could do it. To get started, follow the steps below:
In order to begin, you will need to use the Tools menu. In Windows Vista the menu-bar is hidden by default in most windows. Just hit ALT on your keyboard to bring it back. Now that you can see it again, click on Tools and then select Folder Options. Once the Folder Options dialog is displayed, click on the View tab....
Running Vista32 Home Prem, SP1. I run as administrator. I do NOT use any registry cleaners. I am not able to rename or move select folders. Even though they have been shared (as described below), the renaming and moving attempts have been only from the computer and account that initially created them. Have a folder (with many sub-folders) that I have been sharing without problem across my home network (don't know if the sharing is related to the renaming issue). A few weeks ago I found that the root shared folder and one of its sub-folders could not be renamed or moved, though I can still rename sub-sub-folders and create and modify files contained in any. I don't know if this is a recent development; it may be that that was the first time I felt the need to rename of more them.
I applied the "Take Ownership" merge from this forum to add take ownership to the context menu. I then applied the 'take ownership' at the root of the share. Even though the command window showed activity (and I could see 'success' or 'successful' repeatedly), afterward I still was not able to rename the root share or that one sub-folder. I then did 'take ownership' again for just the sub-folder; again the command window showed activity, but afterward still could not rename the sub-folder. And just to repeat, I was and am still ABLE to rename the sub-sub-folder. Thinking that maybe the network sharing was impacting this, I then removed the share capability AND the security settings from the shared root. Repeated take ownership; but no change. I then downloaded from this forum the "Fix_Rename_32_Bit_ Vista" registry merge and applied it. Tried again to rename the root share and the its sub-folder; again failed.
in XP i used to drag a box to select multipe files. now in vista when i click the mouse in windows explorer, it creates a horizontal line highlighting the file, and all its attributes going to the right. so when i click the mouse and drag (to get the box that selects multiple files) instead of the box coming up, it selects that one file and drags that one file. i'm not sure i explained my self clearly, but if anyone knows what i'm talking about
My "Windows Contact" file has different addresses in it than the list that comes up when I "Select Recipients". There are folders in the contact file that I use to be able to access. For example, with Outlook in XP you could have your main identies contacts and then other contacts or shared contacts. This use to be the case in my Windows Mail until recently. I don't know why but they're no longer there. When I choose "Windows Contacts" the correct list shows up with all the folders but I can't load them into an email without retyping the address manually. If I click on "To" or "Select Recipients" the list that comes up appears to be an old WAB file and not the correct addresses.
What does this mean and how do i fix it?? Header download for the '[Gmail]' folder did not complete. Could not select '[Gmail]' on the IMAP server. You might try refreshing your folder list to synchronize with the IMAP server. Account: 'imap.gmail.com', Server: 'imap.gmail.com', Protocol: IMAP, Server Response: 'Unknown Mailbox: [Gmail] (Failure)', Port: 993, Secure(SSL): Yes, Error Number: 0x800CCCD2
Had to format my hard drive and I used Windows to save my files on an external hard drive. Now I have Windows up and running again but cannot select files that I need to reload on my computer because they are in VHD format. I can do a complete restore, again using Windows, but all that will do will put the corrupt file back on my machine. Does anybody know how I can access these files another way?
I've read as much posts as I could before my eyes started to cross. I have a Vista Home Premium, 32 bit. I have a Realtek HD sound card. I've tried everything I could think of. I went into the sound properties, keep tryin to configure it to play a 5.1 sound system ( i recently got a hold of a Altec Lansing ADA995) and it shows the option to set it to a 5.1 surround sound but for some reason vista wont let me select that option?
I am having a problem with my mouse pointer. When I move the pointer/arrow over an "X" I have noticed that if I try to click on the "X" (or whatever the button may be for that matter) I have to actually move the pointer so that it is above what I want to select. The odd thing is though, that this is not always the case. Sometimes the poiner works just fine. I have noticed that this does not happen on just certain applications; for the most part it just randomly happens. It does consistently happen howver with the items shown in the tray at the lower right portion of my screen.
1. Do you have Print Preview that allows you to select which pages are printed and cancel the pages you do not want printed? 2. Do you have the ability to select double sided printing -- print all the odd pages and then print all the even pages? 3. Select the print quality, no matter what is selected in the Control Panel?
I have a Epson CX6400 and had the features listed above with Windows XP, but lost them with Vista, so I'm thinking about buying a new CX8400, because Epson is not going to write code for a new Print Preferences Window for my CX6400.
select email addresses i can neither send or receive to/from. no error messages are given on either end. outgoing messages do appear in my 'sent items,' but are never received by the recipient. this only happens with a few email addresses. not sure what to unblock or whatever. i have Vista and Road Runner internet service.
i am having trying to make Age of Empires 3 play on my new vista premium computer. The game has worked perfectly well on my previous computer with windows XP. The game appears to load ok and actually goes through the video introduction with no problems but as soon as it gets to the screen where you select play options it shuts down and a meassage appears saying windows will try and find a solution.
One annoyance that I've found in Vista is that unlike all previous Windows versions that I've used, when I get a file selection menu, such as for opening a file within an application or 'save as...', if the list is a multicolumn one, as is usually the case, the ordering of the files is NOT vertical as it always had been before, but is horizontal.
Although I can see a logic in this, the fact is that when I'm faced with columns, my eye naturally reads down each column, and therefore I need the vertical sort arrangement as had always previously been the case.
Please, therefore, does anyone know of a fix for this, so that I can restore vertical sort arrangement in those lists?
The "Page" button on the website allows for that info to be sent by email or by link. However, when I select to send by link I get an error message about ISP and IMAP. I have gmail as my default, and I think I need to switch to whatever is compatible with windows mail. This is a new computer and prior I used XP with OUtlook.
I have Vista preminm with 3 gig of ram. I installed Dazzle video creator platinum. I installed reccommended updates from Pinnacle. Whenever I start Instant DVD recorder and select Dazzle 170 as the capture device I get the blue screen and it restarts my puter,EVERY TIME. Does anyone know how to fix this.
I hear you can choose to play games in either dx9 or dx10 when you right click on shortcut and select it from the menu. When i do this for instance i dont see the option available, once i saw with crysis launching analysis then it went away.
Recently had reason to return my PC to the store because it would not post. After weeks the store said it was a RAM failure. I had 4 GB of Ram installed. Eventually I got my PC returned and they had put 5 MB of RAM in .... The problem is my PC can only see 2 GB of physical memory. I have now got three 1 GB and one 2 GB of ram installed. My PC is preforming worse than ever. I am stating to think my PC can only see or should i say use the 2 GB bar for some reason. I have even tried to change the system config but it will only allow me to select 2048 mb.
I would like to rip all my CDs in mp3 files and save them all on my computer each CD in its own folder. Then I would like to include all the folders in my WMP library and be able to select a playlist from any number of folders. Is this possible?
I use a Vista Business OS installed but am unable to see thumbnail preview in my taskbar. When I check the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties it shows as greyed but deselected and I have not found a way to enable this option. Similarly under Notification Area Tab the Power option inder System Icons also is greyed and deselected. Can anyone tell me how to select this 'Show Window previews (thumbnails)' and 'Power' options.
I have Vista Ultimate 64bit. The screen shows "reboot & select proper boot device or insert boot device in selected boot device & press a key. Does that mean I will have reinstall Vista? Which means I will loose all my data. I do have most of the info backed up. We had a power outage for no apparent reason. Probably a squirrel or something like that. It is on a APC battery, which closes down the computer after a period of time.
