View 9 RepliesAs a very new Vista user (about 5 hours!) I want to move my Documents folder to another partition. In XP I just right-clicked on My Documents and in the Properties window there was a "move" option. Can't see anything like that in Vista Home
Premium. Is there?
I have purchased a new desktop (a 64 bit Dell XPS 430)that will come with a Vista Home Premium. The desktop will have one user.
I plan to partition its HD using a tool like pmagic. Partition C will have the OS. The new partition D will be for user data.
I would like to move the /user folder that contains users files (e.g., documents, audio, video, downloads, etc) to the new partition D. (This is how I maintained my many XP systems: alluser data, except settings, were on partition D).
What is the most optimal approach? I have read Microsoft article73760 entitled "Managing Roaming User Data Deployment Guide."
Vista evidently has serious USB issues on many computers (including my own). What concerns me most is that these problems have plagued Vista since launch and Microsoft still have not fixed them. Googling around to try to find solutions to my own problems, I come across people with BRAND NEW computers who are struggling with failing USB ports. So these problems are persisting nearly a year since Vista public release, and many years since the beta release. I am therefore left wondering if Microsoft have completely no idea what the problem is and are completely unable to resolve the problem?

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.
Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix
some of them.

#1 - Links points to My Pictures Location
I unwittingly set my Links shortcut to point to the same folder as My Pictures and for some reason I cannot undo it. If I open my Links, instead of just showing my shortcut, it also shows the folders in My Pictures. Although not crucial to ops, it is rather annoying to see duplicates on my folders in My Pictures.
I found the tutorial on resetting Personal Folders useful but it did not have anything on fixing this type of "merge." The registry entry for Links is just "&Links" which tell me nothing much.
Using regedit, I have managed to fix my personal folder including My Pictures. Only this Links problem persists.
#2 - Wrong icon for C:UsersMy_Name
Second problem --
When I go to the C:Users folders, instead of seeing the folder with my log-on name, I see the folder called DOCUMENTS.
I checked the registry entry for Personal and it points to the correct folder in an E: drive.
I tried fixing my gf's laptop and ended up loosing all of her photos.
-basically she has a HP laptop running vista
-she wanted me to clean up her laptop so I remove several things in add/remove program
-one of them maybe MS SQL express that comes pre installed
-now, on her desktop she used to have a lot of folder with irreplacable memories
-but now its no longer there
-when I do a search for the name of the folder ex "2009"
-I see it appear but I can not open it, it says missing shortcuts
-it looks like its a .lnk file and everytime I try to open it, its missing shortcuts
What is the difference between a 'Manual: Restore Point' and a 'System: Scheduled Checkpoint' if any? Because I just had to tinker with the task in Task Scheduler to make it more to my liking I no longer get scheduled checkpoints after midnight if the computer is on--I don't get any scheduled checkpoint. Before I get into more detail of what I recall changing--I know I deleted the default multiple task to also create a scheduled checkpoint at boot or logon--I want to test whether anyone will tackle this problem with me or if it has been handled so many times over the years that the post will just be ignored?

Background info: vista installed on drive 1 xp installed on drive 2 dual booted just fine. A week ago my main drive stopped working - a manufacturer fault. I lost everything on the drive. I replaced the main drive 1, installed vista 64 again. Drive 2 was unaffected. I would like to dual boot so that I can run xp again, but don't know exactly how to set that up again. XP is already (I assume) on drive 2. There is no boot.ini on Drive 1 now. I know there are tutorials on how to set up dual booting, but I don't want to re-install xp if it's not necessary. The files on drive 2 are there and unaffected.

View 7 Replies View RelatedIf you change the name of your computer (under Control PanelSystem and MaintenanceSystem), then the scheduled task that Windows Calendar has will NOT be updated with the new name of the computer. The result is that this scheduled task does not run properly when it is supposed to, and when you open up the Task Scheduler, you get an error popping up in Task Scheduler:
"An error has ocurred for the task Reminders - {User Name}. Error message: The specified account name is not valid."
Where {User Name} is your user name.

I tried nortons WinDoctor to help fix any problems with missing shortcuts, missing shared files, etc etc and my pc wouldnt startup the next time! It used to work really well with XP and never did XP not start after WinDoctor,it only speeded the pc up,in my experience.Im reluctant to "try" any other registry fixing software, unless there are some well known Vista registry fixing software that someone can recommend in here?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI recently acquired a Dell Studio XPS 435 desktop with Vista Ultimate as the OS. My plan is to upgrade to Windows 7 in the next couple of months or so. Therefore I won't need the Vista recovery partition on the hard drive. I am trying to eliminate it and add to the C: drive partition. Looking at my drive 0 in disk management I have from Right to left a C: partition 683Gb NTFS with the usual Healthy (System, Boot, Page File, Active, Crash Dump, Primary Partition). Directly to the left is the Recovery or D: drive which is 15Gb NTFS marked Healthy (Primary Partition) and finally to the left is the last partition of 71Mb marked Healthy (EISA Configuration). No idea what that is. Right clicking in the Recovery partition gives several options including: format, shrink volume, extend volume, delete volume, mark volume as active, change drive letter and paths, as well as help.
My question is how to remove the recovery partition and then extend the C: partition. My first thought is to format the recovery partition, delete the volume and then right click the C: drive partition and extend it but I really need some advice so I don't screw up the whole disk. For instance I have no idea what if anything hapens to the drive letters.I think maybe what I am calling partitions are really volumes so you can see I am over my head here.
i want to extend my system partition on Vista, and my friend Bob told me to use EASEUS Partition Master or Partition Magic, but i dont know which one to choose?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI think I messed up my hard drive while trying to erase the EISA partition on it. It's a Gateway P7811-FX laptop with a single 200 GB hard drive. Before, I only had 1 main partition: the C: Drive (176.31 GB), along with the hidden 10 GB EISA partition. After making recovery disks, I followed this tutorial: Delete and Remove to Unlock EISA Hidden Recovery or Diagnostic Partition in Vista » My Digital Life
Following that, I went in Disk Management. The hidden partition showed up, but I couldn't extend the C drive to use the unallocated 10 GB, so I converted it to a simple 10 GB volume. Then I used Acronis Disk Director Suite and merged the two partitions. And now, I can't do anything in Disk Management. There's only one partition now (186.31 GB), but when I right click on it, there's no options to create, shrink, delete, or extend the partition. They were there before, but the only option that shows up is Help.
Under Status, it says Healthy (Active, EISA Configuration). I think I merged the partitions the wrong way, so now there's no "System, Boot, Page File..." partition. Everything is on the EISA partition. When I try to run Acronis, the program doesn't load up. I've tried using Diskpart but I can't create any new partitions either.
I've got a Hp computer that has Vista Home Premium 64 bit on it and I want to remove the partition D which is the recovery partition. I have factory backup dvd's, made my own backup dvd's and have a True Image of the drive with both partitions, so I think I'm covered. Anyone know how to go about removing the complete partition?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI don't know if this is the place to post this thread so excuse me if this is the wrong group, I saw none that really applied. I'm running Vista SP1 64bit.
I'm looking for a Free Partition program to partition my external hard drive into at least 2 partitions. Does anyone know of such a program that's straight forward without all the bells and whistles? Also, would I set the partitions as Logical or Primary? Currently the drive is a Primary but if I partition it into 2 partitions what should they be?
My C: drive is 1Tb in size (931.43Gb), with Used Space of 73.8Gb and Free Space of 857.65Gb. I want to shrink the C: partition down to 200Gb, and use this just for my OS and App files - I'm running Vista Ultimate 64 bit. This would then leave me with a new partition of c. 750Gb for my data files and documents etc. However, Vista will only offer to shrink the C: partition by around 260Gb as a maximum. It will not allow me to select a larger size than this. I've tried turning off System Restore / Shadow Copies, but this makes no difference. Any ideas why this should be, and what can I do? p.s. I've tried using Acronis Disk Director as well, but whilst I can select a new C: partition size of 200Gb, when the system reboots, nothing has changed, so ADD won't work either.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI see lots and lots of discussions. This is EASY to fix. I have Vista & IE8, BTW. click on Start (or the circle thingy for Vista), All Programs and right click Windows Mail (under All Programs, not on the start menu). Select Properties. The value "Start in:" is set to %UserProfile%. This does not work because opening an attachment cannot save the attachment to a temporary file on that folder. I changed it to "%UserProfile%Local SettingsTemp" and that fixes the problem. You can also just clear the field "Start in:" (remove the value) and that fixes it also.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've got a really weird scenario: I've installed Vista on one of my partitions, after a few days it got corrupted, so i've installed another version on a different partition (different disk as well). I've since deleted the first vista installation. Now vista works perfectly on my other partition, no problems. However, when looking at the disk management I can see that the old vista partition's status is:" Healthy (System, Active, Primary Partition)" whereas my working vista partition is: "Healthy (Boot, Page File, Active, Crash Dump, Primary Partition)" My vista partition is not a system partition. This causes some problems, as I can't format the old vista partition. Trying to disable the disk at startup and booting with the Vista DVD doesn't help (it recognizes some problem but when rebooting, nothing happens, no loading of anything). Is there a way to assign the 'System' attribute to another partition and/or to remove the 'System' attribute from a partition?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have several icons/files from my "User" folder showing up in the "Computer" folder (several in duplicate), PLUS numerous blank icons. This seems to have occurred after the Common Files folder became corrupted, after I somewhat riskily decided to power off while Vista was attempting to come out of Sleep mode - it had already taken about 3 mins and I was in a hurry - bad move, I know. That delay appears to have been due to an old version of Online Armor, and has now been fixed (by an update). Chkdsk scanned and (apparently) corrected some errors, and I also ran SFC which said it had corrected some errors but had also found some that it couldn't correct.

For some reason,my Program Files directory has been changed to the Photos directory type, so it changed from the details like file type, size, etc., to rating, photo size, etc.I cannot figure out how to change the directory back to a General file folder type. The toolbar shows things like Slide Show, etc.The sub-directories are all fine and appear as a General type. View 3 Replies View RelatedI have C & D drives, I use D for mundane filesdownloads and portable apps. However, I have a few folders that's are different from any I've seen. I don't know how to explain it other than using a detailed example.
I have D:Folder1
I can rename Folder1 to whatever I want.
E.g it will appear as D:NewFolder
However the dir location of it still points to D:Folder1
I have also scanned the registry for D:Folder1 and D:NewFolder there are no references of it. I've reformatted the C: drive multiple times and reinstalled windows. So I know it's nothing to this specific windows installation (the folders have been like this for about a year) It's not really a problem, I love it because I can rename the folder without messing up links etc. At first I thought it might be a junction, however in cmd it still shows as <Dir> not <Junction> I also checked for hidden folders on the drive. I found nothing.
When I put e.g. documents in my publick folder, do they appear automatically in the private folder too? Do I really need 2 folders to see all my docs in vista?
