Public Folder Appears Automatically In Private Folder
Jun 17, 2008When I put e.g. documents in my publick folder, do they appear automatically in the private folder too? Do I really need 2 folders to see all my docs in vista?

Should Wireless Be Public Or Private?
Jun 4, 2009I just got my Vista 64bit laptop working wireless with my WinXP desktop through a Belkin router. I can transfer files using either PC and can print from the laptop on the two printers connected to the desktop. IOW, I can do everything I need so far.
When I open Vista's Network and Sharing Center on the laptop, I see the SSID name that I'm connected to, with "Public network" next to it. Is there any reason I should change it to Private? Either way, could someone please explain the pros and cons of having it set to public or private?
Joining Network: User Profile Folder Is Set To Private
Mar 23, 2008I have a Vista Laptop and am trying to join to a SBS 2003 Premium network. I would like to preserve the existing settings and so select the current user settings for the new network user. When I attempt to proceed, I receive a message that the User Profile Folder is set to Private. What should I change and where in order to set the user profile correctly?

Apr 13, 2009Two machines on my network, Mine is Vista 64 and my wifes is Vista 32.
My wife machine has Network descovery on File sharing on (does NOT say a password is required) Public folder sharing on (anyone with network access can open, change
and create).
The public folder share property confirms "everyone" has access write delete access.and If I ask her machine to show me all shared folders - it shows the "public" one.
When look in network places on my machine - I see hers, but when I tray and access I am prompted for password. If I give her machines Admin password (it used to be my machine) I get in to see and access the public folder.
Why is the public folder on her machine not accessible without a password?
Sorry for such a noob question - but it does not seem sensible behaviour.

Jan 7, 2009My problem is this: I can access the Public Folder on the PC from the laptop but not the other way round. All access is denied to the laptop from the PC . Both computers have public/sharing switched on and AUC is off. From Internet Explorer, if I can click on network on either machine I can see the whole network, but if I double click laptop from the e-machine I get the error message. Clicking diagnose the problem results in: Nothing wrong with the network. All settings on each computer look identical yet I cannot resolve this access problem. I have searched high and low for a solution without success and then I thought the Bitlocker Drive encryption on the laptop might prevent access from another computer. Without actually turning off Bitlocker, can any of you gurus out there shed any light on the matter? I don't know whether this is the problem because I can remotly connect to the laptop via PC Anywhere from the internet.

Jan 24, 2010my network connection keeps switching between public and private, despite my configuring it to a private network. Because of this, my PS3 is unable to connect (using laptop as media center to stream data to PS3). We are using a DLINK DIR-615 at the moment. I also have Linksys WRT54GS that I could switch back to, but I had problems with my laptop staying connected with that and we had the Dlink kicking around, so we swapped to see if my laptop would stay connected with it, and so far it has. Or atleast when it switches to "local only", it reconnects right away. I'm trying to stream movies and music to my PS3. But whenever it flips to "public", I can no long stream the files. can stay I it to set as a private network?

Jan 8, 2009been a while since ive posted but i have a problem i just recently installed nero 9 and had a problem installing so reinstalled and it worked but since then i have a programs folder appear on my desktop at startup, i can delete it but it only stays gone until i start up again and bang its back also on a side note, my objectdock wont load on startup, works fine but not on start up anyone have any ideas on how to delete folder from desktop PERMANENTLY??

May 17, 2008I have what appears to be an odd issue, and I can't find reference to it on the web anywhere. Under the Public folder on my Vista machine, I can see the folders Public Downloads, Public Music etc. BUT Public Documents is missing.

HOWEVER the documents folder does exist. I can CD into it and see my files. From within explorer, I can enter C:UsersPublicDocuments explicitly and get to the folder, but is does not show up under C:usersPublic.....

Jun 11, 2009A few months ago, I was messing around with the Windows indexing options , adding folders, etc. and it seems to have screwed up the way Search works. I often need to access Folder Options, and I found the easiest way to do this was by hitting the Start key and typing "Folder" since I'm used to "Launchy" type utilities. However, for some reason, Folder Options no longer appears as a search result. I've rebuilt the index several times and it still doesn't show up. Neither does Programs and Features. I haven't tested every Control Panel utility but these seem to be the only 2 so far that do not show up on Search.

Jul 15, 2008I have a folder (on my desktop) and when I open that folder, I want to view the files inside that folder as small icons. So I open the folder, select View – small icons, then deselect “auto arrange”. Then I put the icons in just the order that I want them and everything is fine. I close the folder and re-open the folder, and the files are still displayed by icons and positioned just the way I want them. Great so far. But then the next day, when I open the folder, the folder is back to displaying the icons by “Details” and the files are back in the original order. Very annoying to say the least.
The files are MP3 for some daily listening, and after I listen to one, I want to move it down to the bottom. Then the next day I listen to the MP3 on top and then move that one down to the bottom. Worked fine with XP, but now with Vista, everyday the folder gets changed back to view by Details, and the files are back in original order. How can I keep Vista from automatically changing folder views back to Details and leave it on “Small icons (no auto arrange)”. I tried searching for the answer on the forum, but got an error that I don’t have permission to use the search function.

Apr 12, 2008my emails would get marked as read or automatically move to the deleted folder when deleted. Instead, they remain BOLD black until I exit the inbox THEN return. At that point, the messages are either marked as read or have been deleted. It is weird nothing was changed by me! The box "Mark as read" is set to 0 seconds and that never changed. It's annoying to have to click on EVERY message in order to get it read and then delete what I want, move to the next message, delete it, etc.......exit the folder, then return to it for the messages to be corrected.

Nov 26, 2009I have several icons/files from my "User" folder showing up in the "Computer" folder (several in duplicate), PLUS numerous blank icons. This seems to have occurred after the Common Files folder became corrupted, after I somewhat riskily decided to power off while Vista was attempting to come out of Sleep mode - it had already taken about 3 mins and I was in a hurry - bad move, I know. That delay appears to have been due to an old version of Online Armor, and has now been fixed (by an update). Chkdsk scanned and (apparently) corrected some errors, and I also ran SFC which said it had corrected some errors but had also found some that it couldn't correct.

For some reason,my Program Files directory has been changed to the Photos directory type, so it changed from the details like file type, size, etc., to rating, photo size, etc.I cannot figure out how to change the directory back to a General file folder type. The toolbar shows things like Slide Show, etc.The sub-directories are all fine and appear as a General type. I'm running Vista Ultimate 32-bit, without SP1.How do I change the folder type back to General?I can't figure out how with this single folder.

Jul 22, 2009I have C & D drives, I use D for mundane filesdownloads and portable apps. However, I have a few folders that's are different from any I've seen. I don't know how to explain it other than using a detailed example.
I have D:Folder1
I can rename Folder1 to whatever I want.
E.g it will appear as D:NewFolder
However the dir location of it still points to D:Folder1
I have also scanned the registry for D:Folder1 and D:NewFolder there are no references of it. I've reformatted the C: drive multiple times and reinstalled windows. So I know it's nothing to this specific windows installation (the folders have been like this for about a year) It's not really a problem, I love it because I can rename the folder without messing up links etc. At first I thought it might be a junction, however in cmd it still shows as <Dir> not <Junction> I also checked for hidden folders on the drive. I found nothing.

The possible causes are not the problem. I have 2 gig memory and it was working fine when I only had 1 gig of memory. Disk space, I have over 90 gig of free space.
