Instead of the usual icons/pictures there are white boxes for some of the shorcuts on my desktop. I was able to fix some by using the "change icon" option under properties. But I cannot access this option for some, like Outlook.
View 4 RepliesI turned on my computer this morning, put in my password in the log-in screen as usual. Then when windows started I noticed that my wallpaper was the original vista wallpaper, all my sidebar gadgets were just the starting ones, and that about half my desktop shortcuts were missing. On top of that, all my documents, pictures, music, and even my bookmarks on mozilla firefox were gone!! But oddly enough when I go into C:/users/Matt everything is where it should be. But if i use the links from the start bar, it takes me to Users/Temp folder.
View 6 Replies View RelatedUnder the adminstrator log in, all the shortcut images are showing under "all Programs" under the start menu. Under all other user log in's, there is a blank file image(white square) with an arrow. I can not access the program when click on the white square. Also, the shortcut tab is missing under properties. I recently used wipedrive(lost restore cd) to restore the system to original factory condition.
Some items require me to find the file location to reinstall. I tried the rebuild icon tutorial, the file associations, retore vista shortcuts/icons & the default program options. Nothing has worked. Also, I noticed when I try to open another window in internet explorer it says "can not display page". It use to say something to the effect "open tab tutorial".
How do you create a desktop shortcut to an internet web page in Vista? It doesn't seem to work like XP did, which was quite straightforward.

View 5 Replies View Relatedwe are a college and we have a multiple user platform, but in our labs we have shortcuts on the desktop to all of the school's subscriptions, like MyItLab, and Courseport etc. I have created these as a favorite in IE7 and cannot right click and send to desktop a shortcut! We need the shortcuts to show, and we need them to show for all users. At this point, I cannot get them to show for any user including myself that has admin priveledges!

When I double click I get a list (a very short list) of programs which might be used to open a particular software. It then looks to know if I want to save this program. It can then run it perfectly. One annoying aspect is that I am not able to get accessories within Programs. I use Paint quite a bit and it is now no longer available to me.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm pretty sure I'll have to do a install repair, but would like confirmation. It started when friend tried downloading a video file he sent to himself. (so no virus potential) he told the system to open with everything on his system to get it to play. It was a mpeg2 file so it would never play. When he gave up and tried launching a program. Every shortcut on the desktop launches with iexplorer. Properties for the shortcut point to the executable file for the intended program, so I don't get it. if I go to the program files folder and click on the executables, it launches correctly. only the shortcuts have been changed.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI tried nortons WinDoctor to help fix any problems with missing shortcuts, missing shared files, etc etc and my pc wouldnt startup the next time! It used to work really well with XP and never did XP not start after WinDoctor,it only speeded the pc up,in my experience.Im reluctant to "try" any other registry fixing software,unless there are some well known Vista registry fixing software that someone can recommend in here?

One of the things I'm missing is the option to create new folders from within the Vista Common Dialogs for loading and saving files. Usually on Windows this is "+, , ". Did I perhaps misconfigure Vista to not support keyboard shortcuts? Or are they missing indeed?

If I click the IE icon, it opens and functions normally. I have Vista Home Basic and IE7. I ran Windows Update. It installed a bunch of updates, including IE8. But the problem remains.

The icon is there and I can click on it but the picture representing that icon is missing. The weird thing is that if I change my colours to 16 Bit the icon's picture reappears. It does not single out any particular icon. Has anyone had this problem, if so, how do fix it?

I can get the picture there ok, but if I try to set it as centered, all I get is the center of the picture as the wallpaper. If I try to tile the picture I get the top left hand corner of the picture as the wallpaper. It seems to be tiling or centering the screen on my picture, instead of tiling or centering my picture on the screen! Has anyone else come across this problem?

Check to see if the disc is full.I have over 180 GB free space left. To get things to the desktop i can drag it into the tab section next to the start icon, and then drag onto desktop.But when i do this i am always required to give permission and it creates two desktop icons.i have been having problems with my catalyst control centre but i dont think they are related.
View 9 Replies View RelatedWhen I download (like Adobe) from net, my OS asks not if I want to "run," but only if I want to "copy." Yes, from the "copy" I can install the wanted software. But the icon directing me to "install" remains on my desktop and all attempts to delete unwanted icon cause a failure to start on restart and the "repair" always replaces the icons. If I don't get an education, I'll eventually have a desktop full of icons I neither need nor want.
View 5 Replies View RelatedSome months back I installed Vista 32-bit Home Premium in C: partition. When W7 came out, I installed W7 Ultimate 64-bit in D: as a dual boot. Now I want to keep Vista, but use W7 as the main OS I am going to build on from here on out, so I want it at the front of the hard disk in C: (where it will run faster) and my secondary or experimental OS in D: (Vista).
So I backed up Vista to an external drive, booted from a CD (DriveImage XML BartPE) and restored the Vista image to D: ... then reinstalled W7 in C:.
When I booted after re-installing W7, the multi-boot menu listed Windows 7 twice, instead of Windows 7 and Vista, which I kind of expected, because W7 *had* been in D: and now it was in C: "too." I used Easy BCDEdit to correct the text.
Now the machine boots into W7 fine, but when I try to boot to Vista, I get the usual logo, then the Welcome screen, which lasts a bit longer than it would if nothing was hooey... then I get a cursor (responsive) and a black (empty) desktop.
I used Ctl Atl Del to access Task Mgr, and tried clicking the New Task button and entering explorer.exe, but it is looking at my C: drive for explorer, rather than where it SHOULD be looking in D:, because a funky, unstable, nonfunctional W7 desktop finally came up INSIDE VISTA!! (mind you, W7 is 64-bit!)
I shut down and tried booting into safe mode.... Got the same result of a black screen, and tried entering D:windowsexplorer.exe but got the same error message:
"...ieframe.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error..."
..and again the W7 desktop "tried" to come up.
I suspect it's looking in W7's folder (C:) because the backup image I made of Vista probably contains the original MBR, which mapped Vista to C:. I was hoping when I re-installed W7 to C: with the restored VISTA image already in D: that W7 would create a correct MBR... and it did, I think, but it left the old MBR at the beginning of the D:drive TOO... so when I boot to D:, the MBR record [ON D:] is telling VISTA it is in C:!! Hence Vista goes pokin around in my W7 (C:|) directory.
I downloaded the bootable Vista Recovery CD but it didn't find any problems, and I believe that's because VISTA isn't the problem... the MBR on D: is!
I don't want to have to rebuild the Vista OS... just need to remove the incorrect (old) MBR from the beginning of the D: drive... Can I do that?? Can I test this theory by somehow reading the first sector of that drive?
I bought my HP Pavilion November of 2007. It has enough problems to fill another few pages here. I'm thinking - is it time to buy a new computer, which I assume will have Windows 7, which from what I've seen might turn out to be closer to what I"d like. Also: some time in the near future I will probably be moving from my roomy apartment to a much smaller one. I've never owned a laptop. Will a good laptop type keep me from missing a desktop?

have done a system restore but that didn't cure it. other user accounts are not affected
So basically, a few weeks after i got Vista i tried to install Stellarium (freeware astronomy program), which crashed my computer. I restarted, and after typing in my password I get "My Documents" open on a black screen, nothing else, no taskbar or desktop icons or anything. When i try to open the "taskbar and start menu" icon in Control Panel, nothing happens. Also, when I Ctrl-Alt-Del the usual screen comes up, but the task manager is no longer an option, and i can't think of how to access it or my taskbar. I've installed all the servfice packs and they haven't helped.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have recently had strange pixilated images mixed in with our photos when playing music and selecting slide show, our photos appear along with random images, they are not coming from MY PICTURES folder as i have right clicked when the odd pic appears and they are coming from random folders that i can't find.
I thought the strange graphics were coming from itunes or Tom Tom so i have uninstalled them both...but the images keep coming. How do i stop media center looking and producing these annoying images
All the pictures in my Pictures folder have disappeared, leaving behind a bunch of empty folders. I did not delete them, and I have no viruses according to AVG. It appears that this happened to a few others on this forum, but no solutions were presented. I noticed that the Read Only button was checked on the main folder, so I unchecked it, and I watched the status window un-apply "read only" protection from all my actual pictures files, so it seems to me that they're still there but invisible.
I performed a system restore, and Recova is in the process of performing a "Deep Scan" for my pictures (the quicker scan did not find the files). Has anyone solved the problem of the disappearing pictures? Is this a Vista problem, or perhaps a problem with an update?
i left my son on the pc when i came back on half my desk top icons had changed to adobe icons
when i clicked on say outlook it tried to open with adobe
the only short fix was to uninstall adobe then all my icons went back to normal
then i tried reinstalling adobe reader and most of the desktop icons changed back to adobe icons.
I'm having trouble with shortcuts not working (not doing anything) in Vista. About as much as I can explain is that shortcuts with greyed out fields don't work, but shortcuts with all the fields editable work fine.

For some reason my shortcuts have program icons on them. I used a Windows teaking program awhile ago to remove the shortcut arrows and I dont think thats the problem cause' its been fine until now.
