Shortcuts On Desktop Don't Display
Apr 20, 2008Some of the shortcuts on my desktop don't display properly, and display as a generic icon instead of the correct one. This is strange because I had specifically moved those shortcuts to C:UsersPublicDesktop and they all display fine on all users' desktops but mine.

Jun 3, 2008we are a college and we have a multiple user platform, but in our labs we have shortcuts on the desktop to all of the school's subscriptions, like MyItLab, and Courseport etc. I have created these as a favorite in IE7 and cannot right click and send to desktop a shortcut! We need the shortcuts to show, and we need them to show for all users. At this point, I cannot get them to show for any user including myself that has admin priveledges!

Apr 19, 2010I have recently found that my desktop shortcuts no longer work. When I double click I get a list (a very short list) of programs which might be used to open a particular software. It then looks to know if I want to save this program. It can then run it perfectly. One annoying aspect is that I am not able to get accessories within Programs. I use Paint quite a bit and it is now no longer available to me.

Sep 12, 2008I'm pretty sure I'll have to do a install repair, but would like confirmation. It started when friend tried downloading a video file he sent to himself. (so no virus potential) he told the system to open with everything on his system to get it to play. It was a mpeg2 file so it would never play. When he gave up and tried launching a program. Every shortcut on the desktop launches with iexplorer. Properties for the shortcut point to the executable file for the intended program, so I don't get it. if I go to the program files folder and click on the executables, it launches correctly. only the shortcuts have been changed.

I tried renaming one of the existing personal user folder (i.e. Downloads renamed to Shortcuts) and changing the location it points to another folder. However, if you execute the shell command "Shell: Downloads", it will still go to the folder being pointed to now by the "Shortcuts" folder. Is there a way to change this via registery?

Jun 2, 2008I turned on my computer this morning, put in my password in the log-in screen as usual. Then when windows started I noticed that my wallpaper was the original vista wallpaper, all my sidebar gadgets were just the starting ones, and that about half my desktop shortcuts were missing. On top of that, all my documents, pictures, music, and even my bookmarks on mozilla firefox were gone!! But oddly enough when I go into C:/users/Matt everything is where it should be. But if i use the links from the start bar, it takes me to Users/Temp folder.

Jun 3, 2008When I download (like Adobe) from net, my OS asks not if I want to "run," but only if I want to "copy." Yes, from the "copy" I can install the wanted software. But the icon directing me to "install" remains on my desktop and all attempts to delete unwanted icon cause a failure to start on restart and the "repair" always replaces the icons. If I don't get an education, I'll eventually have a desktop full of icons I neither need nor want.

Mar 8, 2009I, use the email for listing my auctions on several sites. We, use to have Outlook Express on the older computer. With this new computer we are using Windows Mail which I can see now is one of the most useless mail systems. When I, go to the page that I want to link to, and copy the address at the top and have it in my que, I then go to the email and click on the hyperlink button and paste the address in with the Type of File set for http:, and do a OK.
Now when I save the message, and then go back to it the link works, but if I go somewhere else in Windows Mail and come back to the message, sometimes the link works and sometimes it doesn't. Then when you open the hyperlink button again the address has either disappeared or it has change Type of File to "(other)" What made it change the Type of File to "(Other)"??
So, I grab the address again, and change the Type of File back to http: and paste the address into the box, Hit OK. Then on the email I can copy what I want so I can transfer the information plus the hyperlink to other messages that need the same information in them. But then when I go back and check those hyperlinks they have been changed from http: to (other) so now the hyperlink will return a non-valid-address. What is making this happen??

Creating Partition (x64)
Jan 7, 2009I have tried several times to create a new partition using Acronis Disk Director, and it fails with an error code I can't find any reference to.
So then I tried using the built-in tool in Vista to "shrink" my current partition, to allow me to create another. But the max available "shrink space" was something ridiculous, less than 1GB (and the drive has 75GB free).

With Vista, I am having to type in the full address each time unless working from the contact list. Addresses are not kept in the memory more than a few hours. This means that each time I wish to forward an attachment, the whole e-mail address has to be typed in letter for letter.

when i clicked on say outlook it tried to open with adobe
the only short fix was to uninstall adobe then all my icons went back to normal
then i tried reinstalling adobe reader and most of the desktop icons changed back to adobe icons.

Jul 8, 2008I recently purchased a new machine with Vista installed by the manufacterer. the hard drive has been partitioned with a 10gb section holding recovery files. I was originaly told by the salesman,( who apparently had an overwhelming compunction to lie ) that the partition was the complete installation of the OS and that I could burn as many copies as I wanted. After I got the machine home and powered up I found that several of his claimes were false. including the contents of the partition. What I have are recovery files. OH well, My main problem is that when I try the burn to cd obviously the files wont fit on one disk and I ame unable to insert a second disc to continue the burn without the system going back to the begining and starting over. I must be using the wrong process as I would think that I would be prompted to insert the second disc. Secondly I want the original
instalation disk. I feel that its BS that because I didn't install the OS my self that I don't get a disc. I still payed for the OS. I've done this enough that I know that I need to be prepared for a melt down. And the time to prepare is before it happens. I have alot of questions about imaging on DVD, Bios, etc. but first I want to burn the recovery files.

Jun 12, 2008I heard that Vista has its own recovery manager to create recover disc. I was looking through all of my files and could not find and I couldn't find it. I found back up option which I don't think is the same. Reason for this is that my Vista CD is behind a furniture that I can not be bothered to move and get it. I will use some of image creation software and create images but until i save some money to buy Western Digital TB external USB HD I need recovery disc. I am not sure if I am allowed to mention this here but there are a lot of torrent offering recovery disc for Vista 32 and 64. Are they OK to use or creating recovery disc from within Vista itself is better option.
