View 4 RepliesHow do you create a desktop shortcut to an internet web page in Vista? It doesn't seem to work like XP did, which was quite straightforward.
View 8 Replies View RelatedSome of the shortcuts on my desktop don't display properly, and display as a generic icon instead of the correct one. This is strange because I had specifically moved those shortcuts to C:UsersPublicDesktop and they all display fine on all users' desktops but mine.
View 5 Replies View Relatedwe are a college and we have a multiple user platform, but in our labs we have shortcuts on the desktop to all of the school's subscriptions, like MyItLab, and Courseport etc. I have created these as a favorite in IE7 and cannot right click and send to desktop a shortcut! We need the shortcuts to show, and we need them to show for all users. At this point, I cannot get them to show for any user including myself that has admin priveledges!
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have recently found that my desktop shortcuts no longer work. When I double click I get a list (a very short list) of programs which might be used to open a particular software. It then looks to know if I want to save this program. It can then run it perfectly. One annoying aspect is that I am not able to get accessories within Programs. I use Paint quite a bit and it is now no longer available to me.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm pretty sure I'll have to do a install repair, but would like confirmation. It started when friend tried downloading a video file he sent to himself. (so no virus potential) he told the system to open with everything on his system to get it to play. It was a mpeg2 file so it would never play. When he gave up and tried launching a program. Every shortcut on the desktop launches with iexplorer. Properties for the shortcut point to the executable file for the intended program, so I don't get it. if I go to the program files folder and click on the executables, it launches correctly. only the shortcuts have been changed.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI turned on my computer this morning, put in my password in the log-in screen as usual. Then when windows started I noticed that my wallpaper was the original vista wallpaper, all my sidebar gadgets were just the starting ones, and that about half my desktop shortcuts were missing. On top of that, all my documents, pictures, music, and even my bookmarks on mozilla firefox were gone!! But oddly enough when I go into C:/users/Matt everything is where it should be. But if i use the links from the start bar, it takes me to Users/Temp folder.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have shortcuts to web pages on my desktop. They recently stopped working. When I click one, the arrow changes to a blue spinning circle and nothing else happens. If I click the IE icon, it opens and functions normally. I have Vista Home Basic and IE7. I ran Windows Update. It installed a bunch of updates, including IE8. But the problem remains.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a mixed network of Vista (2) and XP (3). I was using Network magic reviously but had problems with printing. So I nixed the network magic. the one thing i did like was the ability to get to each of the computers Desktops directly. I can do that on the Windows XP computers, but when I share the desktop on the vista computers it shows up as users. You then have to navigate to the desktop, which is ok but not directly to the desktop. Is there away to make it go directly to desktop?

My desktop shows the shortcuts that are in the All Users desktop folder. I am not paranoid but methinks there is a user predefined in Vista that is higher than Administrator.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI am having problems with creating shortcuts on my desktop. when i select send to desktop (create shortcut) it comes up with the error. Windows could create the shortcut. Check to see if the disc is full.I have over 180 GB free space left. To get things to the desktop i can drag it into the tab section next to the start icon, and then drag onto desktop. But when i do this i am always required to give permission and it creates two desktop icons.i have been having problems with my catalyst control centre but i dont think they are related.
View 9 Replies View RelatedWhen I download (like Adobe) from net, my OS asks not if I want to "run," but only if I want to "copy." Yes, from the "copy" I can install the wanted software. But the icon directing me to "install" remains on my desktop and all attempts to delete unwanted icon cause a failure to start on restart and the "repair" always replaces the icons. If I don't get an education, I'll eventually have a desktop full of icons I neither need nor want.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI calculated that to migrate to Vista or Windows 7 will cost close to =A32000. not including my time - It will take around 100 hours. This is because many of my existing software / tools / utilities does not work on Vista and the vendors expect me to buy a new license because it is a "new product" even though it does exactly what it did before - just on a different OS. Even the products that do work have problems and glitches that have to be worked around. All this takes time MY VALUABLE time. In other words I am suffering because Microsoft want money. In the past some versions of windows were worth migrating to Windows 2000 and Windows XP were great
But most of the improvements to Vista / Windows 7 are mostly transparent to normal users - even monster power users like me. I believe Microsoft have a serious attitude problem. just wait until they take full advantage of TPM to screw even more money out of us. If I am wrong please point out a real tangible benefit that Vista or Windows 7 brings to a large percentage of users or to me. I also I can no longer buy a laptop because they only come with Vista GPU drivers (some come with buggy unsupported XP GPU drivers - great)
i left my son on the pc when i came back on half my desk top icons had changed to adobe icons
when i clicked on say outlook it tried to open with adobe
the only short fix was to uninstall adobe then all my icons went back to normal
then i tried reinstalling adobe reader and most of the desktop icons changed back to adobe icons.
I'm having trouble with shortcuts not working (not doing anything) in Vista. About as much as I can explain is that shortcuts with greyed out fields don't work, but shortcuts with all the fields editable work fine.
Examples below.

For some reason my shortcuts have program icons on them. I used a Windows teaking program awhile ago to remove the shortcut arrows and I dont think thats the problem cause' its been fine until now.

View 5 Replies View RelatedUnder the adminstrator log in, all the shortcut images are showing under "all Programs" under the start menu. Under all other user log in's, there is a blank file image(white square) with an arrow. I can not access the program when click on the white square. Also, the shortcut tab is missing under properties. I recently used wipedrive(lost restore cd) to restore the system to original factory condition.
Some items require me to find the file location to reinstall. I tried the rebuild icon tutorial, the file associations, retore vista shortcuts/icons & the default program options. Nothing has worked. Also, I noticed when I try to open another window in internet explorer it says "can not display page". It use to say something to the effect "open tab tutorial".
If i download acrobat reader allshortcuts of exe files opens with acrobat reader

View 5 Replies View RelatedRemote Assistance in Windows Vista is a great tool that is ofter overlooked and forgotten about. When it is actually used, it can be very valuable when trying to troubleshoot issues and demonstrate how to do a task to remote users. I find it very helpful when trying to assist my parents when they have a computer issue. Instead of trying to blindly walk them through something on the phone, I can connect to their computer and show how since remote assistance allows them to see what I am doing.
In Windows Vista Remote Assistance has been greatly improved and now has many command line parameters that make it easy for administrators to create shortcuts for their users. Check out the sections below for various Remote assistance shortcuts: ...

I am experiencing difficulty concerning file association with email shortcuts as can be seen in the attachment. When I click on what I think is my email shortcut, I receive the attached message.
This has only started within the last days and wonder if anyone can instruct me how to correct this error.
About a week ago I noticed that I could no longer right-click and create shortcuts. When I click on New > Shortcut, nothing happens, and I can't figure out why.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI first set hands on an IBM PC in 1980: DOS 2.0, Word 1.0 & Lotus 1 (not 1a). I'm organized can find things on a hard drive just fine, thank you very much. I'm used to a tree and a file list, and had them with PCTools long before Peter bought that app and turned it into Norton Utilities or Gates even dreamed of such a thing as part of his OS.
Vista's Explorer tree goes:
Desktop
Sarah
Public
Computer
etc
I understand and use Computer, and I'm finding Public useful, but in Sarah, there are some shortcuts that don't go anywhere, e.g., application data, local settings, my documents, cookies, etc. When I left-click on them, all I ever get is "location not available" "access denied" with blather in between.
Do they have a name? I tried hunting for info on them, but without a specific name for them, it's impossible. What earthly use are those shortcuts supposed to be if you can't click on them and go anywhere? Is there someplace else that they show up or do they only exist in explorer under the user name? If they do show somewhere else, are they any use there? Can they be safely deleted? I've already tried moving them and you can't.
I'm guessing that "Sarah" is my personal user collection of folders or shell folders. It has already "collected" stuff that I don't want to see there. I'd like to clean it up, but I'll settle for getting rid of these bits of trash first.
In the last few months I have been unable to adjust my speaker volume by using the keyboard shortcut buttons, ( fn + F10; fn + F11; fn + F12). Is there a way I can fix this?
