Sharing Desktop, Shows Up As Users

Mar 23, 2008

I have a mixed network of Vista (2) and XP (3). I was using Network magic reviously but had problems with printing. So I nixed the network magic. the one thing i did like was the ability to get to each of the computers Desktops directly. I can do that on the Windows XP computers, but when I share the desktop on the vista computers it shows up as users. You then have to navigate to the desktop, which is ok but not directly to the desktop. Is there away to make it go directly to desktop?

I would like to set up a single set of Windows Contacts which can be used by the two users on my machine, such that any changes made by one of them is visible to both. I have tried creating a shared contacts folder but Windows Mail will not
then treat this as the Windows Contacts folder for email purposes. Does anyone know of any obvious solutions I am missing?

Desktop.ini Icon Shows Up On Desktop?

Feb 12, 2009

I was working on the computer today using several programs and when I went back to the desktop, I noticed a sort of ghosted out icon that looks like a gear on top of a sheet of lined paper and the words "desktop.ini" under it. I have no idea how it got there. Is it safe for me to delete it or is there a better way of getting rid of it.

Desktop.ini Larger One Shows

Mar 26, 2008

Two icons, with the same name, "desktop.ini" have appeared on my desktop and when I open it, this is what the larger one shows. The smaller one has only one entry. I assume they are shortcuts although there is no indication that they are.

[.ShellClassInfo
]LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%system32shell32.dll,-21769
IconResource=%SystemRoot%system32imageres.dll,-183
[LocalizedFileNames]
Spider Solitaire.lnk=@%SystemRoot%system32gameux.dll,-10061
FreeCell.lnk=@%SystemRoot%system32gameux.dll,-10055
Windows Explorer.lnk=@%SystemRoot%system32shell32.dll,-22067
Windows Mail.lnk=@%ProgramFiles%Windows MailWinMail.exe,-225

What I think happened is that I put a number of programmes on the task bar, immediately to the right of the Windows logo, and perhaps this is the information as to the location of these programmes. Are these shortcuts and, if so, can I delete them? As I went back to check on the items, I also found another "desktop.ini" file in my Documents Folder - it is different from the above two. What is the proper location of these files?

Sharing Printer On XP Desktop

Jun 25, 2008

I have a desktop with XP Pro with a HP LaserJet 1018 connected to it and am trying to share it with a Vista laptop setup on a home network. I can print but do not have the functionality that comes with the driver when connected via USB cable. Specifically, I am trying to use the print on both side from the laptop. It prints one side, but will not prompt me to change paper orientation or to hit continue to print like when I print locally. I reinstalled the drivers from the HP website but no luck. Any idea how I can get the printer to work wirelessly the same as when hooked up directly?

Sharing Folders The Desktop

Apr 28, 2009

I am trying to create remote file sharing among my colleagues. We want to use a desktop (with no wireless connection) with business vista as the server and create all the sharing folders in the desktop. After that, we connect to the desktop through a common workgroup. We have done all the setup but we simply can't remotely connect to the desktop at all. The error msg is 0x80070035 and network diagnostics pinged the remote host but did not receive a response. Cannot communicatge with the "Desk Computer Name - ip address" Can someone teach me and show me what is the problem? Don't refer me to another websites because I have already checked and I still don't understand.

Cannot Ping XP Desktop While Sharing

Mar 23, 2008

I cannot ping my xp desktop from my Vista laptop when doing basic connectivity checks. I have shared out my printer attached to the Xp desktop running home edition and want to print on the Vista laptop running home premium. They are both on the same workgroup. I can even ping the Vista Laptop from XP pc, but cannot ping the XP pc from the Vista laptop. I even disabled all windows firewall, Norton on the xp pc as well as mcafee on the vista to no avail. I think that by the laptop not seeing the Xp pc, it is impossible to see the shared printer from XP on the Vista laptop. How can I get Vista to make the connection and see the XP pc?

Windows 7 Provides No Real Benefits: Vista / Windows 7 Are Mostly Transparent To Normal Users - Even Monster Power Users

Oct 9, 2009

I calculated that to migrate to Vista or Windows 7 will cost close to =A32000. not including my time - It will take around 100 hours. This is because many of my existing software / tools / utilities does not work on Vista and the vendors expect me to buy a new license because it is a "new product" even though it does exactly what it did before - just on a different OS. Even the products that do work have problems and glitches that have to be worked around. All this takes time MY VALUABLE time. In other words I am suffering because Microsoft want money. In the past some versions of windows were worth migrating to Windows 2000 and Windows XP were great

But most of the improvements to Vista / Windows 7 are mostly transparent to normal users - even monster power users like me. I believe Microsoft have a serious attitude problem. just wait until they take full advantage of TPM to screw even more money out of us. If I am wrong please point out a real tangible benefit that Vista or Windows 7 brings to a large percentage of users or to me. I also I can no longer buy a laptop because they only come with Vista GPU drivers (some come with buggy unsupported XP GPU drivers - great)

Network Show The Desktop "reset" All Sharing

Jun 5, 2009

One of my friends has a media sharing problem with an XP Home (sp3) MCE 2005, WMP 11 desktop. I've tried to help him by setting up consistent user accounts (passworded) but it doesn't seem to solve the problem. In a nutshell, his network shows his desktop as both a computer and a media device and it seems he has more shares than I think is wise -- he has disks, folders, files, all marked as share with full control permissions to everyone. He also has tried to solve his problem by consolidating media, but put it all in the "all users" tree instead of with a single user. In short, I'm not sure what he has shared and where he has it.

As a result his music and pix seem to share on the network ok, but he gets duplicate entries in wmp and conflicts when trying to stream video on his network. Maybe this last problem is because of multiple shared videos with the same name maybe in multiple locations (or as multiple users)? So here are my two questions. First, is there an easy way I can help him turn off all sharing and start over? And second, does it matter that his desktop shows up as a media device AND as a computer? If so, how can he fix that problem?

Desktop Printer Sharing: Won't Find Printer

Jun 10, 2008

I have a Vista Home Premium Laptop, an XP Home laptop and an XP Home desktop (and an XBox 360) connected to my Linksys wireless G router and an XP Home desktop connected via CAT5 to the same router. All connect to the internet fine. The XP laptop finds and uses the printer on the desktop fine. I had setup a share of the Canon I560 printer, connected to my XP desktop, on the Vista laptop and it worked fine. I don't believe I made any changes, but now it won't find the printer and I can't seem to install a new copy.

The Vista machine will not detect the printer and won't even find the XP desktop or laptop on the network. The XP machines find each other fine. All machines get their IP address from the router via DHCP. All are in the same workgroup, or it seems so. Strangely the Vista machine shows WORKGROUP and the XP machines show Workgroup, even if I type the name in caps, XP still shows Workgroup and Vista WORKGROUP.............

File Sharing Is 'on', Password Protected Sharing Is 'off'

Mar 23, 2008

Network of two computers, a desktop running vista home premium and a laptop running vista basic. I am the only user on each of the computers, my user account name is the same on both computers and I don't need a password to log on. File sharing is 'on', password protected sharing is 'off', and I have shared the 'documents' folder on both machines

When I view my network I see both computers "PAUL-PC" and PAUL-LAPTOP", when I select the one I'm not working on I see "Users", "Documents" and "Printers". When I select "Documents" I see "\PAUL-LAPTOPDocuments is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource....... etc."

IE 7 Users: Stop Looking At Porn Now!

Dec 16, 2008

IE 7 users: stop looking at porn now!Written by Adam O'Donnell @ 10:39 pm 12/15/2008
Source: IE 7 users: stop looking at porn now! | Zero Day | ZDNet.com. Microsoft has reported sightings of exploitation of the recent vulnerability in IE7 on various porn sites. This isn’t really bad news, since no one looks at such improper things on the Internet, right?

According to an article posted late saturday night on Microsoft’s Threat Research Blog, approximately .2% of all worldwide users have been exposed to exploits against the data processing vulnerability, and the exploit is now appearing on pornography sites. If Microsoft’s numbers are correct, that means millions of systems may have been freshly compromised over the past few weeks. I would be surprised if we don’t see an uptick in the knock-on effects of more compromised systems, including higher levels of spam and credit card fraud. Since there is no patch for the IE problem as of right now, your best bet is to use an alternative browser such as Firefox, Opera, or even the Windows version of Safari. Remember, when you are browsing strange websites, it is important to use protection. You don’t know what kind of diseases they may have.

Prevent Users From Disabling UAC

Feb 18, 2008

I have a domain with several Vista boxen with users who are local Admins but not Domain Admins (accomplished using Restricted Groups). I need to ensure that these users do not disable User Account Control on their machines as I am sure they will be tempted to do so. Is there a way I can do this (perhaps through Group Policy)?

I found several UAC-related settings and enforced them, but nothing stops them from disabling it entirely. Is there anything I can do besides the obvious choice of not granting them Administrative privileges?

64-bit Users: How Do Browse W/x64 Without X64 Plug-in

Feb 28, 2008

Internet Explorer 7 in 64-bit mode: Awesome! Minefield, otherwise known as Firefox 3 Beta 3, the only x64 Firefox browser currently available. Incredible...BUT! There are no Flash/Shockwave, amongst others, 64-bit plug-in's available, so I am forced to use FF2 x86, as well as IE7 x86, and I don't understand how anybody browses without, at a minimum, the Adobe Flash Player plug-in.

Most sites that I frequent require the Adobe Flash player, some do the Shockwave, too. I watch a lot of CNN and NBC News, and both of those, amongst many others, require the Flash player. Is anyone aware of beta plug-in's, or an ETA as to when they'll be released? Is there any other (temporary) solution that I am unaware of.
