Recently, the welcome screen seems to be taking such a long time, before it shows the desktop? Is there anyway, in which I can make it load faster? Very annoying? I only have my antivirus as a start up program
View 3 RepliesI was working on the computer today using several programs and when I went back to the desktop, I noticed a sort of ghosted out icon that looks like a gear on top of a sheet of lined paper and the words "desktop.ini" under it. I have no idea how it got there. Is it safe for me to delete it or is there a better way of getting rid of it.
View 5 Replies View RelatedTwo icons, with the same name, "desktop.ini" have appeared on my desktop and when I open it, this is what the larger one shows. The smaller one has only one entry. I assume they are shortcuts although there is no indication that they are.

What I think happened is that I put a number of programmes on the task bar, immediately to the right of the Windows logo, and perhaps this is the information as to the location of these programmes. Are these shortcuts and, if so, can I delete them? As I went back to check on the items, I also found another "desktop.ini" file in my Documents Folder - it is different from the above two. What is the proper location of these files?
I commonly get a blue screen. So how do I solve this problem 2ndly, whenever I play music on my WMP, the computer may just hang on me, giving all but zzzz buzzes and the whole screen shows lines.

So I nixed the network magic. the one thing i did like was the ability to get to each of the computers Desktops directly. I can do that on the Windows XP computers, but when I share the desktop on the vista computers it shows up as users. You then have to navigate to the desktop, which is ok but not directly to the desktop. Is there away to make it go directly to desktop?

The game installed great, but as soon as I click on the shortcut from the desktop it will flicker a black screen and just return me to my desktop. when i download a torrent in the bottom of the screen shows me a yellow sign and then a red sign in the yellow telling connection problems and in the red not connectable but it still downloads...what kind of problem is this and how can it be solved?????
View 9 Replies View RelatedMy buddy was bringing over some files for me on his laptop hdd running xp. I plugged it into my vista x64 computer via usb and I am having a few issues. The hdd shows up in My Computer and shows stuff in it but when I open it, it says that the folder is empty. I whent to Vistas disk manager and it shows everything is fine with the hdd but for some reason the files just wont show up.
View 6 Replies View RelatedHaven't been able to figure this one out, so thought the experts can have a crack at it. I have Vista Home Basic 32bit on a Dell DimC521. There have been several occasions when I paste a file onto my desktop only to notice that it doesn't show up. If I try to repaste it again, Vista asks me if I want to replace the existing file (meaning the original paste is already there, just hidden somewhere). If I use the Rearrange option to align the icons, the mystery icon then shows up. Thus, I'm 99% sure that the icon is off screen somewhere.
I have a similar problem with Napster's Mini Player feature (legal copy with paid subscription). The Mini Player is checked as "Always Display" but it's nowhere to be found on the desktop. It can't be minimized to the taskbar either so I can't do that Move or Rearrange option. I have only 1 monitor (not dual) and I don't play any full-screen games that would alter the display settings so I'm puzzled (1) where these items are hiding and (2) how to bring them back so I can use them, and (3) how to prevent this problem in the future.
i have a problem when vista is booting up past the loading bar screen sometimes not always the system kinda hangs when about to boot into desktop?, a mouse pointer appears and the screen is black for about 30-45 seconds then the vista circle icon appears then desktop loads? is this a known problem or just my system?

View 5 Replies View RelatedSuddenly basic things stopped working. The screen settings after right-clicking on desktop won't appear. Just a blank window for a second and then it's gone completely. I can't run the screen settings from control panel, either. Clicking on games shortcut in Start menu won't work, too. Some of the icons in Control Panel don't respond at all after double-clicking them.
Firstly, I thought it might be caused by some software I installed, so I ran system restore to a point a week old. After restoring the system everything went fine, so I installed necessary aplications again and still, everything was fine. After a few days the problem reappeared, there was no installation or other input from me. I checked out the restore points and there was something like "Uninstalling the language package" restore point. So I restored the system again using this point. And it worked fine. However, after a few days the same thing happened with the same sypmtoms mentioned above. I started to think about some virus.
The computer has the latest NOD and I made sure it's up to date. I also scanned the system using latest Spybot and everything was fine, except one entry that was fixed. Still, the problem remained. After that I tried to install all the latest Vista updates that haven't been installed already. Still no change. So now I haven't got a clue what causes the problem. I thought it's something changing the registry because really, the simplest tasks like running the screen settings don't work. But there's no spyware or virus (as far as I'm concerened). Just now when I'm writing this post my sister told me that the touchpad scroll feature stopped working. This is really weird.
I just changed from Xp to Vista Problem a: the ikons on my desktop are to big, deformed and not near eachoter on my screen. Problem b: the bottom line, with start bottom and smaller ikons and clock is gone, so i can't close the pc properly.

I have just installed Quake 4 on Vista 64 Ultimate with the latest 1.4.2 patch. When i go into single player mode the game will just sit there with a black screen and then quit to my desktop with a little pop up on my start menu saying "the video driver has stopped responding". Last time i played this on Vista i was able to play single player no problem, but it would still do the same, but during game play. So i thought i install it again and give it another try, but it still does the same thing. Also i'm running the latest beta 169.09 drivers with a 8800gtx.

When I turn the computer on (it's an HP pavillion DV2000 laptop) it first shows the black screen with the little bar that says MICROSOFT CORPORATION near the bottom of the screen. Then it transitions to the Vista screen that says WELCOME , then the message changes to PREPARING YOUR DESKTOP. These phases take about as long as usual, and the hard drive LED shows a lot of hard drive activity. Finally the Vista logon screen is displayed. I type in my password and the screen changes to my usual desktop color but there is nothing displayed except the mouse pointer.
There is nothing to click, nothing to do. Ctrl+Alt+Del gives the usual menu for LOGOFF, Task Manager, etc. Task Manager shows about 20 processes and the CPU is 96% idle. It shows many services - some of them stopped. Starting in SAFE mode ends up in the same situation. I can't start from a Vista CD because I never got one with this machine - I have only the recovery partition for reloading the original software. So I can't get to recovery console...............
i have had this for a while, and i have no idea what it is, just a little white square in top left corner of screen. doesnt appear in full screen apps or windows, only on desktop (even if i change pic) when i have no programs running the only thing in task manager - applications is ASUS ACPI Cneter could it be that? what is that? doesnt affect comp in any way just annoying seeing it there

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a Vista Ultimate laptop connected to two monitors. I can extend my desktop to the second monitor just fine. But when I come back from a meeting, and my screen saver has been on, my desktop is no longer extended. Both monitors show the display for monitor 1.
The setting is still correct under Display settings and I can fix the issue by changing Monitor 2 to be the main monitor and then switching it back to Monitor 1 being the main monitor.
i want to connect my pc to my tv using hdmi and also keep my desktop monitor using vga but be able to view both screens identically. my mobo is a gigabyte ga-73pvm-s2h and im using the onboard nvidia geforce7100 /nforce 630i graphics. at the moment the only way i can connect tv and monitor is by using the nvidia control panel but i cant set diferent resolutions for each screen and run them both identically so whichever screen i set as the main is fine but when i look at the second screen res is wrong.. is there a way to have both screens running simutaneously with different resolutions(my monitor is 15" and tv 32")or a setting in windows to allow this rather than having to change the main screen all the time?

View 8 Replies View RelatedWell, I did installed SP1 today. Everything (the installation) went fine! After it finished, I checked again the WU and got the update for my Realtek AC'97 which I was trying to avoid. Although, I ended up installing it because I read somewhere that it needed to be updated for the SP1. Now, this update (Realtek) doesn't fixed anything since now every time I right-click on the little speaker and select Playback/Recording Devices then I get a message with: "Windows has detected that audio enhancements for the following device are causing problems: Realtek blah, blah, blah..." Can anybody explain that?
But now, the real good one, I have only 1GB of memory but when I go into the properties of the computer, then it tells me that I have 8GB installed... Don't I wish!!! So, I thought, hmmm, maybe if I remove the 1GB and try only 512MB then Vista will recognize its mistake. Well, guess what, I got then instead 4GB available showing on the properties... Strange! Very strange, I thought to myself... Funny is that the task manager shows the correct amount of memory! Have any of you had such a situation too??? I did already an uninstall of the SP1 which came from the WU and installed the one from the download link in Microsoft website. But, as you guess, it made no difference...

I got a new 2GB RAM and pulled upgraded the machine to 4GB by pulling out the 1GB. After the installation, the BIOS shows 4GB RAM, but Windows shows only 3GB. In computer properties, it shows 3062MB. Ive had 8 GB in my machine for over a year, all is fine, runs no probs. But I recently installed Everest and noticed that it reported my 8GB being 4096 of physical RAM. Opening task manager confirms this also, yet the BIOS, and the Vista welcome screen says 8GB
I read that the nforcei 680 (?) chipset doesnt use more than 4GB, yet other articles state you need to have MIMO in operation.
Well, I have a quadcore QX6850 processor which supports 64bit computing, IM running Vista Ultimate X64 and have the ASUS P5n32-e Sli motherboard with a 9800 G2 SLI card. So which is true? Do I need to remap the memory? If so how, how? I looked in the BIOS and you can change volate, timings etc but without proper guidance on that IM dead in the water.
