After loading a fresh copy of Vista Ultimate, every once in a while my system will randomly blue screen with the message "MEMORY MANAGEMENT"...wtf? I have a 939 board, Athlon X2 4200, 1GB DDR RAM, and 2 hard drives (1-40gig and 1-120gig).do I need a firmware update for my board or something? Also It doesn't seem to happen as often when I put in my thumbdrive and turn on ReadyBoost.

So my HP started acting up, it's dual boot XP/Vista. I used the boot recovery dvd's from HP to attempt to re-install XP. It caused a blue screen, and messed up the boot sector so I can't now get to Vista either. So after a few hours I finally gave up trying to save the data and went for a full recovery (reformat-install XP clean) that toolead to a blue screen So I finally get Vista to install fresh (wouldn't allow me to install w/my code, said I had to be in windows to use the code.) So I install Visa w/o a code, go to activate and says this had to be an upgrade! technally it still is! So I go to try to find an e-mail or ph for MS and they say $59 to talk to someone! That is BS! If I could get the boot recovery to work I'd go back to XP and never look at vista again! Is there anyway I'm going to be able to save this machine? I'm going to try to contact HP, but have little faith as it's over a year old now, but I'm sure they'd gladly sell me a boot dvd! I relize the first message was in the wrong group.

I am new to this forum so I hope you'll be patient with me. I have a MSI MS-163C laptop with 2GB of RAM and a Intel Dual Core Processor. I have received a copy of Vista Ultimate 64 Bit addition as part of my MAPS subscription and thought that would give it a go, my current version is 32 bit. I have researched and found that 3 to 4GB of RAM is recommended for 64 bit so I purchased 2 x 2GB sticks from FutureShop [Buffalo DDR II / 667mhz PC2 5300 However, anytime that I install any more than the 2GB already in the computer the computer goes to a "Blue" crash screen and I can't go any further. I checked the ram that is in the computer and they are 1GB sticks 667mhz, pretty much the same. If I take both of them out and install just one of the 2GB sticks the computer seems OK, but even if I install a 1GB with it to make it 3GB it crashes again. I am trying to determine for myself it this might be a BIOS problem or what,

I've been getting the same blue screen as early as attempting to load the Vista install PE environment from the DVD. Would like some specifics as to what that is pointing to. Initially, I had a bad stick of RAM. I have since RMA'd the RAM, and tested the new RAM. I'm not showing any errors with the new RAM. It does it irregardless of 64 bit mode, or 128 bit mode. It does it, when I add a second stick of RAM however.

Am running Vista 64 Business on XFX 680i Sli LT with 2Gb ram, Quad core 6600, 600GT video. System runs fine, but I want more memory to help performance. When I try to install additional 2Gb, I get a blue-screen every time I boot (some blue screens have an IRQL_NOT_LESS_THAN_OR_EQUAL, most have no error msg). Is there a way to determine if my installation of Vista already has this installed? I've already checked the Control Panel/Windows Update/Review Update History, it's not in there, I thought it may be in the core install on the DVD?

Business with SP1
Sony laptop, fast core2duo, 4GB
Defender+Avast!
Working beautifully for many months, and then a few
weeks ago this began happening:
Perhaps 2-3 times a week, and with no consistency of circumstances, a blue screen will appear. It might happen while working or when returning from hibernate. There's a countdown as memory is stored, and then a freeze. The only way to recover is to do a hard OFF (5 seconds on the power switch) and restart. When it first happened, I had not installed or changed anything, so I was comfortable doing a restore. It happened again.
It's confusing because the stated cause is inconsistent. I've checked to ensure that all drivers are updated and nothing that's contraVistarian is installed. What analytical steps can I undertake to discover what's causing this, and then to help me make the necessary changes?

You want to install software using Ubuntu? Synaptic is a graphical front-end to apt, the package management system in Ubuntu. It combines the point-and-click simplicity of the graphical user interface with the power of the apt-get command line tool. With windows, insert the CD or DVD and it autostarts. If not, you can click SETUP on the media. then click next and it installs. No command lines. No wonder why 99.999999% of the users reject Ubuntu as garbage. It is garbage.

Problem Blue Screen. No new hardware or software installed recently, last Windows vista update was on 01/15. When I start first, PC passes user registration (boots fine) and
does the normal stuff like loading software and starting the wireless internet connection via Netgear, opening some windows/programms I will close. All normal, but than comes a Blue Screen and very fast shut down of system with restart. Hardly can read the message...Look like Blue Screen appears when to much action is going on like opening of IE and Outlook... or open to many windows... or some bad programm/hardware is booting. But when I restart, restart gives a different blue screens and trouble is much earlier or directly after registering to the system.
But all starting or booting turn slower, real slow now. Start in --safe mode with net working-- the PC works, but the PC can't handle heavy workloads, is really slow in action. I cannot open --My pictures-- to see all picture files displyed on screen (2.7 GB) (the process trying to access the files in safe mode is real slow) and when I attempt to transfer the file to a USB stick, the computer is stopping in middle of action (after 50% transfer)..........

My hard drive went south so I had to reinstall Ubuntu. I timed it and it took exactly one hour to install Ubuntu, download and install 124 updates, all the programs I use and tweaking Compiz Fusion to my liking. Windows XP, OTOH, on the same drive, took DAYS to finish.

My HP system was built with Vista in mind and has been working flawlessly for a year and a half. It runs better than XP and takes one awful beating from me and my system is on all the time with sleep engaged, waking up to perform tasks on it's own very reliably. I really do not know what people are bitching about! Just lucky I guess.
My question has to do with Virtual PC, I have tried 2004 and 2007 and have the same problem with both. In trying to install Ubuntu Linux there just not seem to be a way to get the display resolution correct. In VPC during the install VPC reports that the guest OS has selected a resolution too wide for the screen. I have tried all three resolution options in the VPC setup without sucess. XP installs in VPC perfectly. Linux and XP install perfectly in Virtual Box. Virtual Box has some issues with virtual disk size that I have been unable to resolve or I would just use Virtual Box from Sun systems. and Virtual Box runs much more quickly than VPC.

I've been trying to find an issue for, but so far I have not found a thread anywhere on the internet that even addressed my problem precisely. Occasionally, usually after my computer has been running awhile, my screen will randomly scramble up, and parts of it will become inoperable. There are no "black lines" going across the screen, and my screen hasn't "rotated"; parts of the screen shift up, down, left, or right, but nothing is covered by lines or rotated. I don't believe this to be a problem with my monitor. My reason to believe this is because sometimes, when I open a folder from my desktop, Windows Explorer (explorer.exe) will crash and restart, and after that happens the problem is gone.
If the folder opens and explorer doesn't crash, then the only way I could fix this was to reboot, and after that it would be fine. By the way, when I open the folder, the window is completely black, and I cannot blindly click on the files nor can I rummage through them with my keyboard, etc. Another thing that this affects is the start menu. When I click the start menu, it is completely grey and partially transparent, like the top line of an explorer window (if settings are set to make it transparent). From there, I cannot select any file or option to open, and I cannot shut down, hibernate, log off, etc. from there. Basically, I want to know what is causing this to happen, how to prevent it, and what to do (other than reboot or force restart explorer.exe) when this happens again.

the main audience is "Vista" users. People who already spent a lot of money for an operating system, which they do want to use now. Ubuntu has a clear right of existence in it's area, but not in this group. If you like it better, fine. But don't try to spread your "religion" here when someone asks for help about a Vista problem.

i uninstalled "Fable Lost Chapters" because it was using up space on my drive. So i uninstalled the game, half way through the uninstallation the PC lagged so i used task manager to close the uninstaller. My first mistake was right there, after when i tried to uninstall it, it said i had finished but everything was clearly still there.
So i read around the forums, and i used a force uninstaller which worked fine, except the "fable lost chapters" icon was still in the "uninstall or change program" windows, with no stats, (ie how big it is, last altered ect). Game was gone but the value was still there. So i fished around the regeditor hoping to find it, but no luck there. I have also tried using "C CLeaner" to delete the entry but it gives me this error message "Cannot delete MSI installer" no idea what that means.

I've had voltage issues causing my computer to freeze or reboot during games and dvds. Fixed that and the computer was fine after memtest showing no problems. That was late Dec.
A few days ago, the computer would go to a blue screen saying it's dumping physical memory and then automatically reboots. Thinking my harddisk might be collapsing on me (I have a seagate barracuda 7200.11 500Gb HD with the SD15 firmware, the infamous crash friendly HD), I flash the HD with the SD1A firmware from seagate, then it was fine. 2days later, Catalyst started to cause problems by not responding, so I formated the drive and reinstalled vista ultimate, along with Catalyst, drivers from Mobo manufacturer ASUS, plus a couple of other softwares. That was yesterday, and now I'm getting the same blue screen back, or the computer just freezes.

My one guess is its something to do with the display driver maybe because that has been stuffing up a bit of late, in the way of the screen going black for a couple of seconds then recovering.

I've had pretty good luck with vista so far but every so often it will blue screen on me and I cant figure out why. The scenario is
1. System startup from power off condition
2. System boots to login screen
3. Blue screen referencing processor timing or something
I have not overclocked or anything everything is vanilla. I would also note that I run hardware diagnostics utilities and it seems fine. Also, I never get the message about abnormal system termination like ususal. How can I get a clue as to what is going on here. So far it seems like the error is bogus, I can log in and the machine will run for days with no problem.
