Won't Boot Freezing During Startup

Mar 29, 2009

During my days working as an in-store PC tech at Circuit City, these were techniques I developed for cleaning heavily infected computers. This is what I did if the client's computer won't boot, freezes during startup, or constantly crashes.

1. Remove hard drive and connect it to a clean, anti-virus protected computer. Run a virus scan on infected drive. Physically delete known virus files/folders. Run a checkdsk to correct any file system errors, which was done though command prompt> chkdsk /r
2. Reinstall hard drive in client computer. Boot computer into safe mode. Used CCleaner & MSCONFIG to disable any viruses/malware from starting during boot. Run an antispyware program such as AdAware or Spysweeper (run portably through flash drive. Scan for viruses with client's AV program, if present
3. Reboot client computer normally. Run CCLeaner to delete temporary files, cookies, etc. Defrag client's computer, I used Auslogics Disk Defragmenter (on flash drive. Check for internet connectivity then update client's AV program, if it hadn't already. Scan for viruses with client's AV program to ensure computer is cleaned And if all failed, or the OS was damaged too much, then we reinstalled/recovered the OS

Will Not Complete Full Boot Freezing

Oct 7, 2008

My niece’s laptop will not complete a full boot freezing just before I would expect to see the desktop., HP 530 Notebook with Vista Basic, Intel Celeron M 440 @1867 MHz, 512 MB Memory, Advance Boot Options (F8), Safe Load loads to screen immediately prior to desktop. (Black screen with Safe Load at all corners.), Safe Load Command Prompt Loads to Safe Load Black screen but no prompt., Normal Load goes to Welcome screen and shows the wait symbol. By using “Repair Your Computer” option:

1. I tried restore points but did not resolve issue and restore points disappeared once I tried to restore prior to Service pack 1
2. I can access the command prompt. I can change directories and do directory listings.
3. Individual partitions are c: d:ecovery and e:sources. There is reference to x:windowssystem32 789 files and 71 Directories taking about 146 MB. there appears to be unnamed directories in d: & e: Owing to previous problems – now resolved – a back up or restore disk was not made. We have the Vista disks downloaded from the laptop.

My PC Screen Fades To A Snow White And Keeps Freezing Up

May 15, 2010

I went to load my computer last night and my computer wouldn't load. It said there was a problem and recommended a system repair. I did this and it then went to another screen saying it needed to check the c drive to make sure that it was consitent with the other drivers. When that was complete i could then enter my password and log in. When i did that i went to the internet then my screen started to fade to a snow white screen. My PC then froze. I switched it off and went throught the same process as above. This time i started to do a virus scan on my pc and halfway through the scan my pc froze again and couldn't complete the scan.

Long Blackouts / Screen Freezing While Starting A Game Or Minimizing It.

Jun 11, 2009

so on almost EVERY game I play, when I start it up, black screen, (Which isnt that much of a problem, i mean starting a game can take a long time.) and I enjoy it. I need to do something, check something, or do anything non game wise, I have to minimize. Well, here is where I get frustrated. I alt+tab, alt+delete, anything, even open up task manager, I get either a black screen, or a frozen screen (depending on the game) for about 30 seconds. Nothing I can do. After it is done pissing me off, my computer goes to desktop, or whatever, and then its fine. I go back to the game? Another freeze. I am running a Vista Home Premium x64 dell computer, with intel quad core, and nVidia Geforce 9800 GTX+ graphics card. (Im not exactly sure on how to fill out specs, so feel free to ask for anything you might need to know)

Fix Boot Logo, BOOT Screen No Works

Apr 16, 2008

This is the best install I have ever done (or was)…I did a fresh install and followed a tweak which was to very enlightening, to say the least. From there I have been to a few other sites and moved on to fully customizing my desktop/login and……well…this is where I stuffed up…My BOOT screen no longer works properly, even with the original “winload.exe.mui” file replaced.

I downloaded and used “Vista Boot Logo Generator” I loved the results on my last install…It worked well. Upon deciding to do a fresh install with Tweaking in mind, I simply coppied over a Boot logo I made previously after allowing permissions and all that as well as changing the NO GUI in msconfig…ect….BUT......

No Desktop Boot Or Anything Else.

Apr 13, 2009

This is Windows Vista SP1 (Build 6001) , 32bit, Dell Inspiron 1525. The desktop does not boot. There's no taskbar, no icons, no background. There's no task manager with ctrl-alt-del, nor any kind of response from touching any key. Just a mouse pointer (the mouse pointer DOES respond to the touchpad, but does NOT respond to any right- or left-clicking) on a dark blue screen (not BSOD color). I've tried booting in safe-mode, safe-mode with networking, and safe-mode with command prompt. They all have the same response. The only difference safe-mode does (different than normal mode) is that it displays across the top "Microsoft (R) Windows (R) (Build 6001: Service Pack 1)" and it says safe-mode in all four corners, on a black screen.

I'm sorry I can't give any more information, but I can't get anything else out of the laptop. I don't know if there was anything recently installed or updated (I wasn't using it, my wife was, and she knows so little about computers that she's unsure if she was installing anything, or if windows was updating)

Freezing: The Entire Screen Stops Moving, Cannot Move My Mouse, All Sound Stops Working

Aug 22, 2008

I was just wondering if anyone else had experienced these annoying freezes that occur randomly in Vista 64. It can happen while I'm playing a game, it can happen while I'm browsing firefox etc. I freeze up about 4 times a day and the only solution is a hard restart.

It is beyond me, I have the video card drivers up to snuff, all updates are installed, virus scanners/spyware scanners, video card isn't overheating, CPU idles at 33 loads at 42. I'll describe the problem a little better other than to just say it's freezing. When the freeze occurs, the entire screen stops moving, I cannot move my mouse, all sound stops working, and if there was a sound playing, it will get mutilated into a nasty buzz.

Desktop Boot Freez

Sep 26, 2008

I shut my desktop off just now and was getting ready to go to bed but realized that I had forgotten to do something that I needed to do. So I go back to my PC and power it back on (good 5 minute gap in between power down and start up) to find that after the initial Windows boot logo it froze and would not proceed to my log in screen. I restarted my PC and tried again with the same results, from there I booted with Safe Mode... While going through the loading drivers list, the system froze up on "crcdisk.sys" and refused to go any further. I rebooted and tried again with the same results, however I let the system sit there for about 5 minutes this time and after awhile it restarted by itself and booted Windows normally. I don't want to shut me PC off again to say the least... Unless someone knows what's going on here...

Can someone at least tell me if their Vista 64 OS does the same?

Boot Failure, Drew The Desktop Background

Jul 29, 2009

I recently bought a new Vista computer and after a few hours, it wouldn't boot all the way. It drew the desktop background but did nothing else. It was showing the mouse pointer, and Task Manager said only about 5 processes were running, including the desktop manager. It was not the first time I had booted it up. I wound up totally exchanging the whole computer. What would cause this to happen and what could you do to try to fix it - safe mode?

Off Screen Icons On The Desktop

Nov 22, 2008

Haven't been able to figure this one out, so thought the experts can have a crack at it. I have Vista Home Basic 32bit on a Dell DimC521. There have been several occasions when I paste a file onto my desktop only to notice that it doesn't show up. If I try to repaste it again, Vista asks me if I want to replace the existing file (meaning the original paste is already there, just hidden somewhere). If I use the Rearrange option to align the icons, the mystery icon then shows up. Thus, I'm 99% sure that the icon is off screen somewhere.

I have a similar problem with Napster's Mini Player feature (legal copy with paid subscription). The Mini Player is checked as "Always Display" but it's nowhere to be found on the desktop. It can't be minimized to the taskbar either so I can't do that Move or Rearrange option. I have only 1 monitor (not dual) and I don't play any full-screen games that would alter the display settings so I'm puzzled (1) where these items are hiding and (2) how to bring them back so I can use them, and (3) how to prevent this problem in the future.

Screen Settings After Right-clicking On Desktop Won't Appear

Sep 28, 2009

Suddenly basic things stopped working. The screen settings after right-clicking on desktop won't appear. Just a blank window for a second and then it's gone completely. I can't run the screen settings from control panel, either. Clicking on games shortcut in Start menu won't work, too. Some of the icons in Control Panel don't respond at all after double-clicking them.

Firstly, I thought it might be caused by some software I installed, so I ran system restore to a point a week old. After restoring the system everything went fine, so I installed necessary aplications again and still, everything was fine. After a few days the problem reappeared, there was no installation or other input from me. I checked out the restore points and there was something like "Uninstalling the language package" restore point. So I restored the system again using this point. And it worked fine. However, after a few days the same thing happened with the same sypmtoms mentioned above. I started to think about some virus.

The computer has the latest NOD and I made sure it's up to date. I also scanned the system using latest Spybot and everything was fine, except one entry that was fixed. Still, the problem remained. After that I tried to install all the latest Vista updates that haven't been installed already. Still no change. So now I haven't got a clue what causes the problem. I thought it's something changing the registry because really, the simplest tasks like running the screen settings don't work. But there's no spyware or virus (as far as I'm concerened). Just now when I'm writing this post my sister told me that the touchpad scroll feature stopped working. This is really weird.

I have just installed Quake 4 on Vista 64 Ultimate with the latest 1.4.2 patch. When i go into single player mode the game will just sit there with a black screen and then quit to my desktop with a little pop up on my start menu saying "the video driver has stopped responding". Last time i played this on Vista i was able to play single player no problem, but it would still do the same, but during game play. So i thought i install it again and give it another try, but it still does the same thing. Also i'm running the latest beta 169.09 drivers with a 8800gtx.

Black Screen And Change Desktop Color

May 5, 2008

how the broken system acts. When I turn the computer on (it's an HP pavillion DV2000 laptop) it first shows the black screen with the little bar that says MICROSOFT CORPORATION near the bottom of the screen. Then it transitions to the Vista screen that says WELCOME , then the message changes to PREPARING YOUR DESKTOP. These phases take about as long as usual, and the hard drive LED shows a lot of hard drive activity. Finally the Vista logon screen is displayed. I type in my password and the screen changes to my usual desktop color but there is nothing displayed except the mouse pointer.

There is nothing to click, nothing to do. Ctrl+Alt+Del gives the usual menu for LOGOFF, Task Manager, etc. Task Manager shows about 20 processes and the CPU is 96% idle. It shows many services - some of them stopped. Starting in SAFE mode ends up in the same situation. I can't start from a Vista CD because I never got one with this machine - I have only the recovery partition for reloading the original software. So I can't get to recovery console...............
