Won't Boot Freezing During Startup

Mar 29, 2009

During my days working as an in-store PC tech at Circuit City, these were techniques I developed for cleaning heavily infected computers. This is what I did if the client's computer won't boot, freezes during startup, or constantly crashes.

1. Remove hard drive and connect it to a clean, anti-virus protected computer. Run a virus scan on infected drive. Physically delete known virus files/folders. Run a checkdsk to correct any file system errors, which was done though command prompt> chkdsk /r
2. Reinstall hard drive in client computer. Boot computer into safe mode. Used CCleaner & MSCONFIG to disable any viruses/malware from starting during boot. Run an antispyware program such as AdAware or Spysweeper (run portably through flash drive. Scan for viruses with client's AV program, if present
3. Reboot client computer normally. Run CCLeaner to delete temporary files, cookies, etc. Defrag client's computer, I used Auslogics Disk Defragmenter (on flash drive. Check for internet connectivity then update client's AV program, if it hadn't already. Scan for viruses with client's AV program to ensure computer is cleaned And if all failed, or the OS was damaged too much, then we reinstalled/recovered the OS

System Recovery Startup Freezing

Feb 11, 2009

I have an Acer 9410 laptop with Windows Vista and I had taken it to computer techs to fix some mouse pad problems as well as some startup freezing problems. They said it passed their PC check so didn't appear as anything was wrong. They said I could try to do system recovery to restore it back to its factory settings. Well, when I initially tried it, it didn't work so then, not thinking this through and not being as familiar with this as I would like to have been, I accidentally rand the Anytime Upgrade CD thinking it was also the recovery CD.

Of course, I found out after the fact that it was just that, so it reinstalled another version of Vista on my computer which then completely wiped everything including the Acer emPowering Technology software which contains the software to do the system Recovery. But it also removed some of my original drives like the memory card drivers, microphone, and maybe the webcam. In the process it saved a bunch of old Windows files to my hard drive. Are those still useful and is there any way
I can recover those drivers besides getting the recovery CD's which I can purchase from Acer or the store where I bought it from for around $40.

Will Not Complete Full Boot Freezing

Oct 7, 2008

My niece’s laptop will not complete a full boot freezing just before I would expect to see the desktop., HP 530 Notebook with Vista Basic, Intel Celeron M 440 @1867 MHz, 512 MB Memory, Advance Boot Options (F8), Safe Load loads to screen immediately prior to desktop. (Black screen with Safe Load at all corners.), Safe Load Command Prompt Loads to Safe Load Black screen but no prompt., Normal Load goes to Welcome screen and shows the wait symbol. By using “Repair Your Computer” option:

1. I tried restore points but did not resolve issue and restore points disappeared once I tried to restore prior to Service pack 1
2. I can access the command prompt. I can change directories and do directory listings.
3. Individual partitions are c: d:ecovery and e:sources. There is reference to x:windowssystem32 789 files and 71 Directories taking about 146 MB. there appears to be unnamed directories in d: & e: Owing to previous problems – now resolved – a back up or restore disk was not made. We have the Vista disks downloaded from the laptop.

Startup Repair And Failure To Boot.

Jul 12, 2009

Start up repair problem signature reads as follows:
Problem Signature:
Problem event name: StartupRepairv2
Problem signature 01: AutoFailover
Problem signature 02: 6.0.6000.16386.6.0.6000.16386.....

When I boot at the Thoshiba screen (options to boot into setup/multiboot) there are green lines going vertically through the screen. It will not boot if that is the case. It then initializes start up repair which gives me the error above. I have tried to restore from earlier points to no avail. I have reinstalled vista from my disks at which point it worked for a minor peroid of time and this started to happen again. Virus? Once In awhile it will boot without the green vertical lines and will start up just fine, but this appears to be random.

Startup System Will Boot To Safe Mode

Mar 23, 2008

I'm getting a BSOD right when Vista gets to the login screen on startup. The system will boot to safe mode, but I have no idea how to fix it from there. This happened suddenly on a system that has been running stable for 6+ months. At first I thought that perhaps some of my RAM was bad, so I tried booting with just one stick in (I have 4x1gb), but it wouldn't boot on any of them. My other suspicion was that I had installed drivers for a new keyboard that night before (as that was the only recent change to my system configuration), so I deleted those, but that didn't help either. I'm thinking my next move is to flash my BIOS, but I'm running out of ideas......

MSCONFIG Boot - Stuck In Safe Mode Or Selective Startup

Apr 14, 2008

This has not been a week that's made me much enamored of Vista. In order to troubleshoot my parents' Vista PC after their wireless mouse/keyboard suddenly stopped working after 4/9's automatic updates, I had to a do a system restore from Safe Mode. Their corded USB keyboard we got to work (along with a PS2 mouse) to do the fixing wouldn't work using the F8-method to get into Safe Mode, so I had use MSCONFIG to force a safe mode boot.

The system restore worked, and I've disabled automatic updates until MS comes out with a fix for the apparently widespread original problem, but now I'm stuck with a very frustrating situation. My parents' computer will only boot up into Selective Startup (which leaves some important things such as graphics drivers unloaded) or into Safe Mode. Within MSCONFIG, when I choose "Normal Startup", it automatically checks the "Safe Mode" Box in the boot tap, and when I uncheck that box, it automatically selects "Selective Start" on the previous tab. (I've tried hitting apply on each of the tabs, but it doesn't help). I've found a few other threads with this same problem across the web, but never found a solution.

Vista Startup: After Two Minutes I Get The Welcome Screen. Then The Monitor Goes Black For A Full Two Minutes Before Continuing The Startup Process

Mar 23, 2008

I have just puchased my first Windows Vista computer - an HP laptop. I have purchased at leat five laptops since 2000 so I am familiar with setup and
comfortable with installations etc. I have three questions here.

1. My last computer had Windows XP and an 80 gb hard drive with 70 gb full - After copying the data only (55 GB) to my new 250 gb hard drive I have only 107 GB remaining of the 222 GB C drive partition. I have not yet added many programs. That tells me that Vista must be using 50-60 GB or more of the drive. Can that be correct?

2. My new computer takes 5-6 minutes to start up. After two minutes I get the welcome screen. Then the monitor goes black for a full two minutes before continuing the startup process. Is this normal for Vista?

3. Occasionally the monitor goes dark for a few seconds and a window pops up saying the display driver has failed but is back. Is this normal?

I certainly gained no speed with this new computer. There are many things I like about Vista. Since I have no previous experience with owning it I am trying to sort out if this computer is a lemon that should be returned or if I should just put up with the downside.

BAM Freezing

Aug 26, 2008

I bought a new lappy recently and was dismayed that it had to come with vista and I was not allowed to dual boot or anything or else void my warente. However that is not what I am here to rant about, ok I got it a month ago, it worked fine for the first 2 weeks then BAM It began freezing, and I mean total system lock up hard restart etc etc . If I leave it for half an hour or so it eventually goes black and displays an error "Login process has failed to create the security options dialog" I've been looking at solutions and calling tech support and all I've gotten is

1) reformat everything and reinstall Vista. - Did not help 1 iota, the problem came back a week later.

2) uninstall Asus live updates - done and no effect

3) press Ctrl + Alt + Del and fix - Not going to work its freezing just after startup (or during) and nothing responds other then force restart.

After about ten minutes it will unfreeze but proceed to execute all of the clicks I made during the time it was frozen. I am at about an intermediate stage when it comes to computers.

Ultimate Keeps Freezing

Mar 9, 2010

I have an XPS 720 H2C that up until 2 nights ago, was running fine. Then all of a sudden, my OS (Vista Ultimate) started freezing after about 10 minutes. I am unable to do anything when this happens apart from press the power off button.

I haven't installed anything new.
I haven't updated anything.
I haven't done anything unusual.
I have Norton Antivirus running in the background etc

The system is a Quad Core 2.93ghz, 4g ram (although Vista only allows 3...bah) and it's a 32 bit OS. I have a Zotac 1gb GTX 285 Amp GFX card, a Blu-Ray drive and a Liteon DVD DL RW and a SoundBlaster X-Fi card. So no changes. Nothing. The system has crapped out on me. I have rolled back to 2 previous save points (first one made no difference) and I have also installed the latest updates to try and fix it. Nada. Still crashing. I now throw myself at your mercy and hope you don't tell me to get a Mac/Linux - tell me my OS is lame, that Dell is overpriced crap (I got my second hand dirt cheap).

Is 1GB Of RAM Enough To Run Without It Freezing All The Time?

Mar 17, 2010

A few weeks ago my computer died whilst playing online poker. Got the BSOD followed by computer refusing to boot at all. In the end I got it to boot up from the cd drive to run memtest86 and windows memory diagnostic to check my 2gb RAM. Sure enough both of these scans found errors and so today I opened the machine up! Took out 1gb or stick of RAM, and left the other 1gb in the machine. I then ran both memory tests again and this time no errors were found! So in my mind I had removed the faulty RAM and maybe vista would start for the first time in weeks! It did start to my relief and it seemed to be running ok. Then all of a sudden while browsing the net, the computer just froze. Now it keeps freezing often and randomly, sometimes even just by moving the mouse!

One bit of good news is that it is JUST freezing and no longer giving me various BSODs. Does it keep freezing because 1gb of ram is not enough? Another interesting thing is that when the system died on me 2 weeks back I was playing online poker and was always wondering if this caused the problem. Then today I ran a virus scan and it was scanning fine until it came to scanning one file which froze the scan and computer. The file was the following - c:Program filesfull tilt pokergraphics... widget.Tournamentinfo.PNG. Obviously this file is from the same site I was playing poker on. Does that mean anything or am I reading too much into it? Main thing. Is 1gb of RAM enough to run Vista without freezing randomly all the time? I would have thought it was, but I'm not that clued up!

My Computer Keeps Freezing

Ok, my computer is fairly new, about 2 1/2 weeks old. And past week or so, I been experiencing random and sudden freezing. The first time it happened was when I was playing BF2. Another time when it happened was when I was browsing the web and listen to iTunes. So far, my computer froze about 6 times. I know it froze because there is a repeating sound of either my game or the songs. And also the Num Lock light won't turn off or on and the mouse pointer is frozen. Hodling CTRL+ALT+Delete does not respond. Just now, while browsing this forum using the key "Page Down", it froze. It's like any sudden movement will freeze my computer.

Keeps Freezing/Not Responding

May 10, 2009

I just recieved my new Dell with Vista 64-Bit Home Premium on Friday (the 8th) and since the initial start-up, I can be doing anything (web surfing, viewing task manager, any program) and without any warning the program just stops responding. In most cases I can't minimize or close the program and clicking Start - Restart even does not respond. The 'only' way to end this and restart the computer is by actually unplugging the power cable.

Viweing the Event Viewer I see that within 2 days, I have 83 Error messages listed under Windows Logs - Applications (These are the red buttons under the LEVEL column). All updates are installed. I have to write this quickly before the bugger freezes up again.

Freezing During IE7 Opperations

I recently purchased a new computer. It has been plagued by freezing and crashing ever since i bought it. (just froze) I also have unfrequently had the (just froze) "nvlddmkm display driver has stopped working and has recovered" message. Could that account for the frequent freezing. The thing is that it is not accompanied by a black or blue screen.

This freezing usually occurs during IE7 opperations, but also occurs while playing games and fiddling with gadgets. (just froze) I have 2gb and wondered if this could be the problem - i seem to remeber reading somewhere that when you have 2gb or + it frequently freezes.

Usually, I notice this:

1.It's usually happens when it's idle, and running uTorrent.

2.If uTorrent isn't open, it's when a lot of programs are open.

Nothing special happens, all that happens is that the computer freezes up, with no error message. The only way to restart it is to go and take out the battery.

Neophyte: Freezing Up

May 21, 2009

I've been using Vista since 01/2008 without any issues. Now I have a melt down of sorts.
My computer is an HP Pavilion dv6775us laptop with Vista Home Edition 32bit. I was doing my standard evening email check when I clicked on a hyperlink to check UPS shipping on a recent online purchase and my mouse (PS/2 touchpad on laptop) froze up. Ctrl-alt-del doesn't work either. So I hard restart. Here is the sequence of events that followed:

Restart normal --> mouse won't work, ctrl-alt-del won't work. hard restart

Restart safe mode --> mouse works, everything seems normal. restart

Restart normal --> mouse won't work, ctrl-alt-del won't work, screen shifts to black with cursor. hard restart

Restart safe mode --> mouse works, system restore. restart

Restart normal --> mouse works for a minute or so. system locks up. shut down.

I tried to uninstall software, but Vista safe mode doesn't allow it. I tried accessing the internet via safe mode + networking, no love. The mouse and keyboard work fine in safe mode, but only 1-2 inputs in regular mode before freezing up. What are my options besides a Vista reinstall (can't as I'm working offsite on assignment, no Vista CD's).
