Will Not Complete Full Boot Freezing

Oct 7, 2008

My niece’s laptop will not complete a full boot freezing just before I would expect to see the desktop., HP 530 Notebook with Vista Basic, Intel Celeron M 440 @1867 MHz, 512 MB Memory, Advance Boot Options (F8), Safe Load loads to screen immediately prior to desktop. (Black screen with Safe Load at all corners.), Safe Load Command Prompt Loads to Safe Load Black screen but no prompt., Normal Load goes to Welcome screen and shows the wait symbol. By using “Repair Your Computer” option:

1. I tried restore points but did not resolve issue and restore points disappeared once I tried to restore prior to Service pack 1
2. I can access the command prompt. I can change directories and do directory listings.
3. Individual partitions are c: d:ecovery and e:sources. There is reference to x:windowssystem32 789 files and 71 Directories taking about 146 MB. there appears to be unnamed directories in d: & e: Owing to previous problems – now resolved – a back up or restore disk was not made. We have the Vista disks downloaded from the laptop.

Complete PC Backup: Full Vs. Incremental

May 28, 2008

I would like to *manually* save different versions of Complete PC Backup, but Vista won't give me that option and will only save incremental backups. As someone noticed here on the forums, "using the *scheduled* backup is the only way to get the checkbox to create full backups, each and every time you want one". However, scheduled backups is not what I want to do, as I'm losing control of the exact PC versions. Can I rename the earlier backup to something else (eg. "WindowsImageBackup1"), so Vista would create a new folder "WindowsImageBackup" and save a new full backup into it? If yes, when I rename the folder from "WindowsImageBackup1" back to "WindowsImageBackup" in order to restore the earlier version of PC, will
it get corrupted or confuse Vista?

Won't Boot Freezing During Startup

Mar 29, 2009

During my days working as an in-store PC tech at Circuit City, these were techniques I developed for cleaning heavily infected computers. This is what I did if the client's computer won't boot, freezes during startup, or constantly crashes.

1. Remove hard drive and connect it to a clean, anti-virus protected computer. Run a virus scan on infected drive. Physically delete known virus files/folders. Run a checkdsk to correct any file system errors, which was done though command prompt> chkdsk /r
2. Reinstall hard drive in client computer. Boot computer into safe mode. Used CCleaner & MSCONFIG to disable any viruses/malware from starting during boot. Run an antispyware program such as AdAware or Spysweeper (run portably through flash drive. Scan for viruses with client's AV program, if present
3. Reboot client computer normally. Run CCLeaner to delete temporary files, cookies, etc. Defrag client's computer, I used Auslogics Disk Defragmenter (on flash drive. Check for internet connectivity then update client's AV program, if it hadn't already. Scan for viruses with client's AV program to ensure computer is cleaned And if all failed, or the OS was damaged too much, then we reinstalled/recovered the OS

Second Monitor Prevents Full Boot

Oct 1, 2009

Problem: Today I bought a second 22" widescreen monitor, an ASUS VK222H Upon connecting it to my second monitor port and booting, windows claims it was improperly shutdown, and when picking Boot as Normal, it blue screens shortly after before reaching user login. Removing my original monitor and plugging the new ASUS in ONLY, yielded the same improper shutdown message with following BSOD.

Either monitor will boot in safe mode, however only my original viewsonic will make it all the way to login. Everything runs fine with only the Viewsonic connected, but with only the ASUS, or with both, it blows up on me. The BSOD was something along the lines of System_Service_Exception citing a file which I believe was nvlddmkm.sys. I did a bit of googling but did not find anyone, or any answers that had something to do with adding a second monitor, lots of answers about various graphic drivers, but none specific enough that I wanted to start trying any.

Booting Up: Reboot And Select Proper Boot Device Or Insert Boot Media In Selected Boot Device And Press A Key

Jan 1, 2009

I went to turn it on this morning, I just had a black screen showing the following words;

Press F2 to run
Press F11 to boot menu
Auto detecting PRI Master Atapai CDROM.

It then went to reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key. I went into the BIOS to change the boot order and inserted my Vista home premium 32bit. I then got windows is loading in files. After a short while I got the black start up screen with Microsoft Corporation but after a few seconds it just froze. Moments later it went to a blue screen with white writing part of which said the following; A PROBLEM HAS BEEN DETECTED AND WINDOWS HAS BEEN SHUT DOWN TO PREVENT DAMAGE TI YOUR COMPUTER.

Complete PC Backup

Jun 5, 2008

I performed the complete PC backup but I don't know if it worked and if it did, what discs are valid. It was a confusing process. I have 36 GB to backup and it said it should take 3-5 DVD discs. When I inserted the first disc it said to label it, including the date and time of the backup followed by "1". It did the same thing four times, and each time the progress bar started from the beginning. After the fourth disk, it finally went through verifying the disc and the progress bar went further. It told me to label backup was complete. The last two discs are readable but the other three are not. Did the system back up all 36 GB on two DVDs? If there were errors writing to some discs then it should tell me that the discs are not part of the backup set.

How Can Complete PC Restore.

I went to see when the last time my complete PC image was made, on boot up I entered F8 and went to repair PC and went to complete PC backup. There was none made. So I rebooted and went to backup and restore center to make one. There is no backup button. Is this because I have home Premium? It's not offered on Home Premium. Is there a Freeware program that I could use to make it appear on the System repair menu?

Installation Of SP1 Will NOT Complete

I downloaded en_windows_vista_enterprise_with_service_pack_1_x64_dvd_x14-55934.iso and burned it to a DVD. Then I ran SETUP.EXE on a 64-bit Vista system. The installation ran as an UPGRADE for hours. Literally hours. When I awakened in the morning, the computer was stalled in the cleanup phase of installation. I power cycled the computer. Vista decided the Upgrade was a failure and reverted to the state before the Upgrade started. I see no reason for this behavior.

SP1: Setup Did Not Complete. Reverting Changes

Apr 22, 2008

I have an issue with Vista SP1 installing (No seriously! Nobody else having the issue, right??). It gets through 100% of stage 3 of 3, then after a minute or two says the "Setup did not complete. Reverting changes." message. Before the Microsoft super wizard got on the phone with me, I had already done a memory scan, chkdisk, scannow, file cleanup, defrag, nothing helped (I have Home Premium, and I do have the two required updates installed as well). When he connected to my computer, he tried to install right off the bat (a stupid thing to do, considering I wouldn't be calling if I didn't have the issue) and it of course failed. Then after checking to make sure no antivirus etc was active (which I uninstalled the day before) he disabled all non-Microsoft services from startup and disabled my TV card, sound card and graphics card, then tried again. Still didn't install. Lastly he installed some kind of tool from Microsoft's update site and tried to install SP1 again, this time from the standalone 500+mb version. No luck.

He scheduled a call today between 3 and 5pm from one of their research and developement team members to get deeper into the problem, but do any of you have any ideas what's going on?

Here is my computer and it's specs: ...

Starting Over After A Complete Reinstallation

Feb 2, 2010

Today, I was forced to use my Vista Ultimate installation disc to reinstall Vista - since yesterday morning, my computer was not able to get out of a loop (first going to Windows Error Recovery and then, when selecting any of the options, going to the green loading bar, where it the green bar stopped moving about 2/3 of the way, and going back to Windows Error Recovery).

The installation went smoothly enough, but I am absolutely clueless how to get my computer to roughly the same conditions it was before this fiasco. Fortunately, it would appear that all of my files and folders from before this re-installation have been saved in the folder Windows.old. However, I am at a complete loss as to how to reconfigure my Internet connection, how to restore my previous screen resolution (there are now only three options for resolution under Display Settings), and essentially getting the basics back in order.

PC Complete Failed To Restore

May 5, 2009

The hard drive was of SATA type. I attempted to use VHD file to migrate the system from the old hdd to the new hdd but failed. The following was the steps taken:

1. Created a VHD file on the laptop machine and stored it on an USB interfaced external hdd.
2. Temporarily installed the new SATA hdd on a desktop machine and created partitions including data partitions.
3. Moved the VHD file to one of the data partitions on the new hdd.
4. Replaced the old hdd on the laptop machine with the new hdd.
5. On the laptop machine, the first primary partition of the new hdd was set active since the Vista system was installed on the first partition of the old hdd.
6. Started the laptop machine, let the system boot from the installer DVD and selected "Repair".
7. "PC Complete Restore" was selected. The installer located the VHD file and the restore process began.

Then the following message was displayed:

The Windows Complete PC Restore operation failed.
Error details: The parameter is incorrect.(0x80070057)

Complete PC Backup & Restore

May 26, 2008

I want to build a PC. I've browsed around the 'net looking for information on Complete PC Backup. The only thing that I've found on the 'net explains how to do a backup & restore. I've browsed around the Microsoft Vista discussion groups & found out that it is possible to do incremental (I wish that it would do differential instead of incremental backups.) as well as full backups.

Can I give the backup files names or does Windows? For example, before I install certain software can I give the backup a file name such as "before installijng XYZ software"? The way I understand it with incremental backups, the full backup has to be restored first & then the incremental backups are restored next starting with the oldest & proceeding to the latest. Since the Complete PC Backup does incremental backups, does the Restore wizard restore the incremental backups in order?

Backup did not complete successfully. I am running Business Vista 32bit on a HP Compaq desktop with 3 GB of RAM and 100GB hard disk drive. I went to another Business Vista computer on the same network, and backed up to the same Server folder (Userbackups) without any problems. I am not interested in Acronis True Image 2009. I would like to continue using the automatic backup feature that came with Vista.

I Want Complete, No Hassel, Control Of My Computers!

May 8, 2008

As long as I've worked with Computers, (about 30 years) I've never had an Operating System that was so poorly designed that I can't do anything without having to jump through multiple hoops, in order to accomplish what I need to do. I want to know how to set Windows Vista up so that I can get some work done. All of my computers are networked, (5 of them) and I am the only person who operates them. I need to be able to access any file, or folder, from any computer, on the network. I need be able to read, write, delete, cut & paste, rename, or perform any other operation, on any file, or folder, from any computer, without getting "Access Denied" messages. I own these computers, Microsoft doesn't!

As the only user, I am also the administrator, and yet I attempted for almost an hour tonight, to Rename a Folder, that I created, and I still have not been able to do that. When I go to the Help information, The Instructions are Wrong! There is no option on the "Action" Menu called "New Share," and I shouldn't need to go through using a Command Line to accomplish a task that should be simple........

Complete PC Backup (0x80780048) Not Enough Space?

I'm running Vista Ultimate 32bit and I'm trying to do another Complete PC Backup to an external 500gb USB drive and I'm getting error (0x80780048) due to not enough free space left on the backup drive. The screen before says, if there is not enough free space it will start deleting prior backups starting with the oldest. This does not seem to be the case as advertised! I do scheduled regular data backups once a week and every month or more I also do a manual Complete PC Backup. Is my only resort to reformat my external
500gb backup drive and start over with a fresh complete pc backup until the drive fills up again? I thought this was a cool feature with Vista Ultimate (which made me buy it over the Premium edition) but it does not automatically delete the oldest backups to make room?
