I went to see when the last time my complete PC image was made, on boot up I entered F8 and went to repair PC and went to complete PC backup. There was none made. So I rebooted and went to backup and restore center to make one. There is no backup button. Is this because I have home Premium? It's not offered on Home Premium. Is there a Freeware program that I could use to make it appear on the System repair menu?
View 4 RepliesThe hard drive was of SATA type. I attempted to use VHD file to migrate the system from the old hdd to the new hdd but failed. The following was the steps taken:
1. Created a VHD file on the laptop machine and stored it on an USB interfaced external hdd.
2. Temporarily installed the new SATA hdd on a desktop machine and created partitions including data partitions.
3. Moved the VHD file to one of the data partitions on the new hdd.
4. Replaced the old hdd on the laptop machine with the new hdd.
5. On the laptop machine, the first primary partition of the new hdd was set active since the Vista system was installed on the first partition of the old hdd.
6. Started the laptop machine, let the system boot from the installer DVD and selected "Repair".
7. "PC Complete Restore" was selected. The installer located the VHD file and the restore process began.
Then the following message was displayed:
The Windows Complete PC Restore operation failed.
Error details: The parameter is incorrect.(0x80070057)
I want to build a PC. I've browsed around the 'net looking for information on Complete PC Backup. The only thing that I've found on the 'net explains how to do a backup & restore. I've browsed around the Microsoft Vista discussion groups & found out that it is possible to do incremental (I wish that it would do differential instead of incremental backups.) as well as full backups.
Can I give the backup files names or does Windows? For example, before I install certain software can I give the backup a file name such as "before installijng XYZ software"? The way I understand it with incremental backups, the full backup has to be restored first & then the incremental backups are restored next starting with the oldest & proceeding to the latest. Since the Complete PC Backup does incremental backups, does the Restore wizard restore the incremental backups in order?
I can create restore points but when I try to restore to a previous point, always get the message: "System Restore did not complete succesfully.

I suffered a hardware failure on the system (C:) volume yesterday, which is in a RAID 0+1 configuration (of four Western Digital Raptor 74GB drives). I managed to keep the system up long enough in degraded mode to perform a full (and successful) Complete PC Backup onto an external USB hard drive. This was done just in time, as at the next reboot, the RAID array failed completely and caused data loss (amongst others, my user profile files and the boot manager system file). When I booted up with my original Ultimate DVD and chose to completely restore the PC, it cannot find any images despite the USB drive being connected to the PC. I have verified in the BIOS that the USB drive was recognised. Upon further research, the original (pre-SP1) Vista RE does not support the loading of USB drivers at the Complete PC recovery stage - these drivers have to be loaded in manually via drvload.exe in X:windowssystem32.
I tried to load in drivers in C:windowssystem32 (surprisingly still accessible), but failed to do so. Has anyone done this before? Where do I find the correct INF to load into Vista RE in order to access my Complete PC Backup image? Do I need other INF files in addition to USB.INF to get this working? I presume it may be necessary to get the USB drivers onto a CD-R and loading them in that way, although I'm hoping the solution will be more self-contained on the PC's system drive.

1. Backed up C: using Windows Complete PC Backup. (6 DVDs no errors.)
2. Removed old HD and inserted new.
3. Booted Windows Vista install DVD. (I proceeded to partition HD but did not complete the install.)
4. From Windows Recovery Environment, I chose Windows Complete PC Restore.
5. Inserted Backup image DVD disc1.
6. When it looked for the location of the image it couldn't find it so it fails.
Why can't I use system restore to restore back to certain restore points? I was only successful twice with it. When my laptap was new and when I used it after re-formatting my hard drive. On all occassions after those two instances I can never restore back to any restore point. It always says that "unspecified error" line. If Microsoft doesn't know what happend, how could I. Why did they bother putting system restore if it doesn't work all the time anyway. It gives you a false sense of security.
View 5 Replies View RelatedAfter installing SP2, on 5/25, System Restore seems to have stopped creating automatic restore points every 24 hours. I checked the Task Manger and it is set for 24 hours. It shows a restore point being created on 5/26. System Restore shows the last Restore Point being created on 5/25 about 1 hour after downloading.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a recent problem installing Windows updates on Vista Ultimate as the update process stays on 'creating restore point' forever. I've let it run as long as 7 hours in this state, with no change. It looks like the system is unable to make a restore point sucessfully. I know it has worked in the past, as I'm fairly up-to-date on Windows updates. Reading some other threads, I've tried using Disk Clean-up to remove all by the most recent restore points, and then try to disable/re-enable system restore - this part without success. When I check the system properties for System Restore, the System Restore button is greyed out. I've attached a screenshot of the screen for reference. I've checked the group policies to verify the System Restore is not disabled there.

That little window disappeared but then nothing hasppened. I was expecting to see a list of possible restore points but nothing showed on my screen. I clicked system restore again and got a message that system restore was already running and would now exit.

As it is restoring Norton sees the virus and removes it from my system but Norton can not see the virus inside the restore files. Right now my system is fine (virus wise) but I need to restore from an earlier restore point because I deleted some files and now my cd/dvd drive is not recognized. But like I said, I can not restore do to the fact that I have a virus buried inside my restore files. I could care less about the virus in the restore files, my main goal is to get my cd/dvd drive working again so I can install my business software.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI performed the complete PC backup but I don't know if it worked and if it did, what discs are valid. It was a confusing process. I have 36 GB to backup and it said it should take 3-5 DVD discs. When I inserted the first disc it said to label it, including the date and time of the backup followed by "1". It did the same thing four times, and each time the progress bar started from the beginning. After the fourth disk, it finally went through verifying the disc and the progress bar went further. It told me to label backup was complete. The last two discs are readable but the other three are not. Did the system back up all 36 GB on two DVDs? If there were errors writing to some discs then it should tell me that the discs are not part of the backup set.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI downloaded en_windows_vista_enterprise_with_service_pack_1_x64_dvd_x14-55934.iso and burned it to a DVD. Then I ran SETUP.EXE on a 64-bit Vista system. The installation ran as an UPGRADE for hours. Literally hours. When I awakened in the morning, the computer was stalled in the cleanup phase of installation. I power cycled the computer. Vista decided the Upgrade was a failure and reverted to the state before the Upgrade started. I see no reason for this behavior.

I don't know that much about computers, what can i do to load this game, as i have completed all the other myst games apart from the path of the shell. View 9 Replies View RelatedI have an issue with Vista SP1 installing (No seriously! Nobody else having the issue, right??). It gets through 100% of stage 3 of 3, then after a minute or two says the "Setup did not complete. Reverting changes." message. Before the Microsoft super wizard got on the phone with me, I had already done a memory scan, chkdisk, scannow, file cleanup, defrag, nothing helped (I have Home Premium, and I do have the two required updates installed as well). When he connected to my computer, he tried to install right off the bat (a stupid thing to do, considering I wouldn't be calling if I didn't have the issue) and it of course failed. Then after checking to make sure no antivirus etc was active (which I uninstalled the day before) he disabled all non-Microsoft services from startup and disabled my TV card, sound card and graphics card, then tried again. Still didn't install. Lastly he installed some kind of tool from Microsoft's update site and tried to install SP1 again, this time from the standalone 500+mb version. No luck.
He scheduled a call today between 3 and 5pm from one of their research and developement team members to get deeper into the problem, but do any of you have any ideas what's going on?

Today, I was forced to use my Vista Ultimate installation disc to reinstall Vista - since yesterday morning, my computer was not able to get out of a loop (first going to Windows Error Recovery and then, when selecting any of the options, going to the green loading bar, where it the green bar stopped moving about 2/3 of the way, and going back to Windows Error Recovery).
The installation went smoothly enough, but I am absolutely clueless how to get my computer to roughly the same conditions it was before this fiasco. Fortunately, it would appear that all of my files and folders from before this re-installation have been saved in the folder Windows.old. However, I am at a complete loss as to how to reconfigure my Internet connection, how to restore my previous screen resolution (there are now only three options for resolution under Display Settings), and essentially getting the basics back in order.
I run Vista Home Premium and have been informed that it has built in backup capability to make a 'dic image' of my entire computer similar to what "Ghost" does.
however, I cannot locate the starting point which I was told is under the 'system and maintenance' heading in Control Panel. in my control panel there is no such system and maintenance setting.
now i know there is an automatic way of backing up files and folders using windows vista but i was wondering if there was a way of automatically backing up my complete system. now i've tried using Acronis True Image for this but i'm afraid that i won't be able to restore if my boot drive gets corrupt or i don't have an OS to installed Acronis to and load the back up image.

I'm running Vista Ultimate 64 and the drive I'm trying to back up to is just a secondary SATA drive.
I have tested the Complete PC Backup feature several times. It bombs out 75% of the time. Has anyone experimented with this feature? What were your results?

I have about five that begin with "J" and only one of them will auto complete. On the others I have to type the entire address.
Backup did not complete successfully. I am running Business Vista 32bit on a HP Compaq desktop with 3 GB of RAM and 100GB hard disk drive. Over the past two months I have had my document folder backed up to a W2K Server folder-automatically. Last week, I got the following error message: "The backup did not complete successfully. A shadow copy could not be created for the following reasons: Incompatible version of the serializing package (0x81070724)."
I went to another Business Vista computer on the same network, and backed up to the same Server folder (Userbackups) without any problems. I am not interested in Acronis True Image 2009. I would like to continue using the automatic backup feature that came with Vista.
I'm new this process and am hoping that someone can lend a hand. I understand how BIOS flashing works and the risks involved, but I'm not sure how to find the file to dl and how to actually complete the 'flash'.

I only wish to backup C: as it has the OS and installed programs (I use a different process to back up other data).

I want to know how to set Windows Vista up so that I can get some work done. All of my computers are networked, (5 of them) and I am the only person who operates them. I need to be able to access any file, or folder, from any computer, on the network. I need be able to read, write, delete, cut & paste, rename, or perform any other operation, on any file, or folder, from any computer, without getting "Access Denied" messages. I own these computers, Microsoft doesn't!
As the only user, I am also the administrator, and yet I attempted for almost an hour tonight, to Rename a Folder, that I created, and I still have not been able to do that. When I go to the Help information, The Instructions are Wrong! There is no option on the "Action" Menu called "New Share," and I shouldn't need to go through using a Command Line to accomplish a task that should be simple........
I'm running Vista Ultimate 32bit and I'm trying to do another Complete PC Backup to an external 500gb USB drive and I'm getting error (0x80780048) due to not enough free space left on the backup drive. The screen before says, if there is not enough free space it will start deleting prior backups starting with the oldest. This does not seem to be the case as advertised! I do scheduled regular data backups once a week and every month or more I also do a manual Complete PC Backup. Is my only resort to reformat my external
500gb backup drive and start over with a fresh complete pc backup until the drive fills up again? I thought this was a cool feature with Vista Ultimate (which made me buy it over the Premium edition) but it does not automatically delete the oldest backups to make room?
