Second Monitor Prevents Full Boot

Oct 1, 2009

Problem: Today I bought a second 22" widescreen monitor, an ASUS VK222H Upon connecting it to my second monitor port and booting, windows claims it was improperly shutdown, and when picking Boot as Normal, it blue screens shortly after before reaching user login. Removing my original monitor and plugging the new ASUS in ONLY, yielded the same improper shutdown message with following BSOD.

Either monitor will boot in safe mode, however only my original viewsonic will make it all the way to login. Everything runs fine with only the Viewsonic connected, but with only the ASUS, or with both, it blows up on me. The BSOD was something along the lines of System_Service_Exception citing a file which I believe was nvlddmkm.sys. I did a bit of googling but did not find anyone, or any answers that had something to do with adding a second monitor, lots of answers about various graphic drivers, but none specific enough that I wanted to start trying any.

Screen Saver Prevents Monitor From Turning Off

Mar 23, 2008

I recently got a new computer running Windows Vista and everything is working great except the monitor won't turn off automatically like it should. My Screen Saver starts fine after 3 minutes of inactivity - I'm using the built-in My Pictures Slideshow that shows personal pictures & video clips. But the monitor never turns off even though I have it configured to auto-power off after 30 minutes of inactivity - it just stays
on all day running my screen saver. If I change the screen saver to a different one the monitor turns off after 30 minutes like it should. The problem seems limited to the My Pictures Slideshow screen saver. This is troubling because this same configuration worked fine with Windows XP (the only difference was that XP's My Pictures Slideshow did not include videos - it only showed pictures). Is this just a bug in Vista or is there something I can do to resolve the problem?

X64 And 24 HD Monitor: Can Only Get Full Screen With 1280x720

Apr 2, 2009

I’m running Vista x64 with a 24” wide screen HD monitor with 1920x1200 native resolution. (Check my System Specs for all my hardware.) However, I can only get full screen with 1280x720. Any higher and my screen shifts to the left and I lose about 1/3 to ½ of my available viewing area. Anything on the left side of my task bar is gone, including the Windows (start) button. If I go to my native 1920x1200 res the text is so small it’s virtually unreadable (along, again, with losing a third of my viewing area). What’s the purpose of having this monitor if I can’t get it to display the full screen with readable text? I’m guessing I must be doing something wrong.

Will Not Complete Full Boot Freezing

Oct 7, 2008

My niece’s laptop will not complete a full boot freezing just before I would expect to see the desktop., HP 530 Notebook with Vista Basic, Intel Celeron M 440 @1867 MHz, 512 MB Memory, Advance Boot Options (F8), Safe Load loads to screen immediately prior to desktop. (Black screen with Safe Load at all corners.), Safe Load Command Prompt Loads to Safe Load Black screen but no prompt., Normal Load goes to Welcome screen and shows the wait symbol. By using “Repair Your Computer” option:

1. I tried restore points but did not resolve issue and restore points disappeared once I tried to restore prior to Service pack 1
2. I can access the command prompt. I can change directories and do directory listings.
3. Individual partitions are c: d:ecovery and e:sources. There is reference to x:windowssystem32 789 files and 71 Directories taking about 146 MB. there appears to be unnamed directories in d: & e: Owing to previous problems – now resolved – a back up or restore disk was not made. We have the Vista disks downloaded from the laptop.

Monitor Does Not Engage On Boot Up

May 15, 2010

ive recently started having this problem been googleing it for a couple of days on and off and havent seen a solution for me. I turn on my pc to boot it and power comes on fine. i turn on my my monitor either before the pc or after (either is the same result) but the monitor stays black while the pc goes through the normal booting up process. I know its booted because if i switch on and off the monitor roughly ten times it the picture finally appears.at this stage the pc and monitor work normally.Until the screensaver comes on if i leave the keyboard or mouse for whatever time is set.

then the pc goes black (was mistaken before not sleep mode) if i havent come back to the pc.then the problem is most of the time the picture wont come back.the pc is still on but i have no picture again.then i have to turn the on switch on and off a couple of times again till i get a picture. If i use the pc for a long time period i have no problems as long as i dont let it go to black(think its poewer saving).example put the screensaver to 20mins. Also if i have to restart the pc , doing updates etc the pc reboots fine and the monitor works fine. so basically on boot no picture. on reboot have full working monitor.

Monitor Loses Signal On Boot Up

Mar 23, 2008

I have a Viewsonic LCD monitor. i just put a new pc together with an XFXForce 8600GT video card. The problem is when i boot the pc i see the bios screen fine. it's not until i see 'Micrsoft Corporation' and am about to see the status bar going back and forth that the screen goes blank and i then see 'No sginal'. I'm connected using a DVI-I cable. If i unplug the cable from either the card or monitor and plug it back in i then get video. I sent the monitor to Viewsonic which they said they fixed a problem. hmmm anyway i'm still seeing this proble. If i use a VGA cable with a DVI adapter i won't have this problem. While the LCD monitor was away i used an old CRT monitor with a VGA cable and had no problem.

Vista Startup: After Two Minutes I Get The Welcome Screen. Then The Monitor Goes Black For A Full Two Minutes Before Continuing The Startup Process

Mar 23, 2008

I have just puchased my first Windows Vista computer - an HP laptop. I have purchased at leat five laptops since 2000 so I am familiar with setup and
comfortable with installations etc. I have three questions here.

1. My last computer had Windows XP and an 80 gb hard drive with 70 gb full - After copying the data only (55 GB) to my new 250 gb hard drive I have only 107 GB remaining of the 222 GB C drive partition. I have not yet added many programs. That tells me that Vista must be using 50-60 GB or more of the drive. Can that be correct?

2. My new computer takes 5-6 minutes to start up. After two minutes I get the welcome screen. Then the monitor goes black for a full two minutes before continuing the startup process. Is this normal for Vista?

3. Occasionally the monitor goes dark for a few seconds and a window pops up saying the display driver has failed but is back. Is this normal?

I certainly gained no speed with this new computer. There are many things I like about Vista. Since I have no previous experience with owning it I am trying to sort out if this computer is a lemon that should be returned or if I should just put up with the downside.

UAC Prevents Norton Installation

Apr 22, 2009

I have Vista Home Premium, and I'm trying to install Norton Internet Security 2009, which I downloaded from the website. The problem is that even when I tell User Account Control to allow the install program to run, nothing happens. I contacted Symantec about it, but all they said was that the user control policy is not allowing the installation to run and that I should contact Microsoft about how to fix it so the program can run. How do I do that?

I have tried some fixes, such as Tools/Accounts/Connection/Properties, and the Never Dial a Connection radio box is marked but all is greyed out, so I cannot apply it. Also, if I try to open anything else from the Properties box, such as General or Advanced, the procedure goes grey and I get a "Not responding" message.

Configuring: Game Controller Prevents Display Blank

Mar 26, 2008

I have my power settings configured ot turn off the monitor after 15 minutes of inactivity. . . but the problem is, if I'm playing a game with my Logitech USB Gamepad, Vista doesn't count the input from the gamepad as 'activity', which is a little puzzling.

Is there a way to get Vista to recognize gamepad input as activity so that it does not turn off my display in the middle of playing my game? I do realize that I can change my power settings to just not turn off the display, but that's inconvenient because then I have to change my settings back when I'm done with the game. As far as I'm concerned, Vista is just not behaving in a reasonable fashion if game controller input doesn't prevent screen blanking.

Added A Second Monitor To The GeForce 7100 GS Using A DVI-VGA Adapter And For The Life Of Me Cannot Get It To Display Anything, The Monitor Is Just In Sleep Mode

Apr 23, 2010

I added a second monitor to the GeForce 7100 GS using a DVI-VGA adapter and for the life of me cannot get it to display anything, the monitor is just in sleep mode. I've got the latest driver, Windows is up to date, checked the cables, tried another adapter, tried everything but, still nothing. The second monitor shows up in the device manager and in the Nvidia control panel. It's enabled and set to extend desktops. It seems the system knows it's there because I can move the mouse over, but cannot see anything. The power light on the second monitor just flashes. I've swapped monitors over, to make sure there's not a problem with the display and it's fine. When I do that, the main monitor is then plugged in to the DVI adapter and then that one goes to sleep. Just seems whichever monitor is plugged in to the DVI-VGA adapter just doesn't want to work........

OEM Vs Full Version

Due to a very long and unsuccessful attempt to get Office Enterprise to work properly on a new ACER (VISTA Home Premium) computer that came c/w a pre-installed trial version of Office 2007 as per Office technical support I need to do a clean install of VISTA. My problem is that the only option I have is to re-install the ACER factory load c/w the trial version and all of the other useless stuff. I am contemplating buying either a full or oem version of VISTA Home Premium, Format C, get rid of the hidden partition and start from scratch. What is the difference between oem and full other than the price.. Advice will be appreciated, this is my fourth computer but I have never needed to do anything this drastic before.

Disk Full, But Should Not Be Be

Nov 22, 2008

I have Home Premium Vista, 64bit and 688GB hard drive(size when checking C: drive). I recently checked and it showed less than half full. Then a few days ago I tried saving a file and I got disk full message. I checked the c: drive again and it showed full- no space available, which should not be. I did a defrag, check disk and that did not work. I do remember seeing a warning around that time, but it vanished before I read it all. I think it said a file was not working or was corrupted and may have said something about "Catalyst". I found Catalyst Control Center on my computer, but that seems to be ATI card (graphics card?). I did delete a bunch of junk so it can now function, but latest check still shows only 72 MB available and that can't be.

Run Full Back Up To D?

Mar 23, 2008

Due to an Office Enterprise issue that can only be resolved with a clean re-install of Vista on an ACER computer rather than re-installing the ACER factory load I have bought a Full version of VISTA Home Preimum so that I can do a CLEAN install. I have 3 partitions on my HD C, D & hidden, the hidden contains the factory load. My plan is to run a full back up to D as well as copies of my files. I will also make copies of my files off computer. I do have the ACER recovery disks but I hope to never have to use them. When I am all backed up I would like to format C, get rid of the hidden partition, keep D, put the VISTA DVD into the drive and do a clean install of VISTA on C. I could be wrong but I think that it would be best to format before putting the VISTA disk into the drive so there is no confusion between product keys etc. this is not an upgrade it is the same version that ACER supplied.

I tried to do a search but the "full" just brings up references to the Full Backup you can do with Windows Vista Ultimate. Any one know where I could find out best practices for doing backups. For example, do I reformat the drive my backup is on so I can do another backup? Or do I buy a bigger drive, and continue doing this as the months go by? Do I swap for another drive to continue doing my backups, and just keep buying more drives as they get filled? Do I hope that Moore's Law also applies to hard drive storage?
