I was currently fixing my folder i cons because they were yellow instead of green, i replaced the desktop.ini for all the folders. then i went to command prompt and typed this in attrib +r AdminDesktop and now he User is desktop: when i click it and i go to the top it says "C:UsersAdmin" : I tried viewing hidden folders but nothing.
View 4 RepliesI tried experimenting with some themes from the internet and somehow got the wrong browseui.dll to boot with vista so i'm stuck with windows with no GUI. now, i would like to fix it by renaming back the original browseui.dll (which is now named browseui1.dll, in the same directory [C:windowssystem32]) but when i type in "ren C:windowssystem32rowseui1.dll browseui.dll" i get the access is denied message (this is after typing "cmd" in the run textbox). i still have access to the taskmanager and the usual "ctrl+alt+del" menu.

View 4 Replies View RelatedYesterday my (Vista 32) system crashed so hard that it took some system files with it, necessitating a complete re-install with all the headaches and thoughtless wreckage it does to one's file system. I'm desperately in need of many of my old "My Documents" files, etc. and have searched around for them, to no avail. I've been trying to access the old Users/Account folder I used in my previous installation (where I presume most of these files are located). I need to grand admin permissions to do this, and I do, but then a new window opens up and it's literally nothing but a *black* (not blank) empty space. I get no further explanation or access.
a) Where are my old files? Have they been deleted?? b) How do I access this folder? I've seen in other forums things that tell me this users/account folder may just be a sort of 'pointer' used for legacy purposes. What's going on?
I calculated that to migrate to Vista or Windows 7 will cost close to =A32000. not including my time - It will take around 100 hours. This is because many of my existing software / tools / utilities does not work on Vista and the vendors expect me to buy a new license because it is a "new product" even though it does exactly what it did before - just on a different OS. Even the products that do work have problems and glitches that have to be worked around. All this takes time MY VALUABLE time. In other words I am suffering because Microsoft want money. In the past some versions of windows were worth migrating to Windows 2000 and Windows XP were great
But most of the improvements to Vista / Windows 7 are mostly transparent to normal users - even monster power users like me. I believe Microsoft have a serious attitude problem. just wait until they take full advantage of TPM to screw even more money out of us. If I am wrong please point out a real tangible benefit that Vista or Windows 7 brings to a large percentage of users or to me. I also I can no longer buy a laptop because they only come with Vista GPU drivers (some come with buggy unsupported XP GPU drivers - great)
Much like everyone else, I'm having issues getting my vista/xp wireless network going. The routing of the network is like this: Motorolla modem ---> Netgear Wireless Router ---> Hard wired into Desktop running Windows XP Pro SP3 ----> Wireless to Vista Ultimate x32 In XP:I ran the network wizard and chose option 2 (the residential gateway one). The workgroup name on both computers is the same.
In Vista:
-- File sharing is turned on
-- Network discovery is turned on
-- Password protection is turned off
The issue: In XP I can see the "Users" folder but cannot access it. In Vista I can't see the XP desktop in the network folder at all. The only two things that show in the network are the laptop and the router. Thats it. Also, in the network map, nothing shows. Not the internet, not the router, nor the laptop. Forget about the desktop.
I have and found this forum while I was trying to figure out how to switch from vista to xp. I have found a few thread on the subject, pretty much implying that there was no possible way (my computer has been bought last year in another country so my supplier cannot be reached easily).
Many of the answers were asking: why switch from vista to xp?
Well, personally, I am not a great geek, but I am amazed how much complications with softwares seem to result from vista. And the greatest of all, for me, is the incapacity to edit my movies (which was the main purpose of my purchase). According to what I experienced and read on other forums, Vista does not recongnize most of the camcorders (with Premiere or Movie maker) and I have been unable to install avid either... anyone has a solution for me? cheers!

I have Vista on my laptop. I need to connect to a wireless network which has WEP encryption with a 6 character pass phrase. Every time I attempt to connect Vista tells me that the pass phrase must be 5 or 13 characters long. The other users all have XP machines and are connected and working. There is no way to get the pass phrase changed.

View 4 Replies View RelatedAfter using perfmon to determine what applications were hogging my internet connection at 2am every morning I found that AeLookupSvc and Appinfo were the culprits. After looking up what they did and deciding that it would be ok to disable them (!!) I did so, and now any activity that requires administrative privileges either does not respond, or returns the error "C:Windowssystem32services.msc The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. Perfmon, services.msc, windows firewall, system restore, accessing my registry, none of it works. I can still run programs and serf the net, but anything that needs admin priv will not work. I guess what I need is some kind of workaround, I need to enable Appinfo without administrator privileges so I can get my administrator privileges back. I have never had a prolonged experience with something so clunky, so ridiculous, and coming highly touted from one of the largest corporations on the planet! While playing warcraft I'll suffer from framerate issues with a powerful dual core until the cpu's decide "hey, he's got 6 fps, lets stop whatever we were doing and help him out" and my framerates will jump to 60. I spent an hour in the registry working on my latency issues, I spent 30 minutes in the registry fixing a fallout 3 console problem, svchost will decide to go surf the net in the middle of me doing something myself and lag the crap out of me. My computer has a mind of its own and rarely is it doing something I want to do too! If windows vista wiped my a$$ it would be a 47 step process and have to stop and ask my permission to ask my permission. I went to microsoft support for help, entered in my product i.d. in order to determine if I could get support help WITHOUT having to PAY $49, and it told me the number was for vista home premium 64 bit instead of the 32 bit I selected, well, ok, I went back and changed the option to 64 bit, re-entered the SAME exact i.d., it gave me a product i.d. format error......the same, copy/pasted i.d..... I went and did it two more times both ways including opening a new browser window laughing my ass off!!! Way to go microsoft! Your $230 billion dollar organization wants $49 from me to help me with your problems! I'm so glad I was so frustrated I laughed, otherwise my laptop would have traveled through the wall. ( I know, anger issues, but can you blame me?!?!) There's some more I could write if you're still reading, but my finger's are getting cold, I haven't typed this much since my senior design project.

View 7 Replies View RelatedSo I just bought my 2nd Evga 8800gt card Superclocked Edition. I tried running SLI with it and when I enable SLI, I'm only getting 10 fps on 3dmark06. When I disable SLI, I'm getting a much higher fps running just 1 card. Is it some bug with Vista x64? Does anyone have any idea why this might be happening? I've tried everything from reinstalling the drivers to reinstalling the cards themselves. Both cards show up in my device manager and both are bridged. I can't figure out why this is happening.

I get quite a few e mails on this list and often send to it. For some strange reason tonight, when I try to reply to an e mail that has been sent to the list, it tries to reply from one of my other e mail address's rather than my default one. Yet when I do a new e mail its ok, and creates one from my default e mail address!

View 4 Replies View RelatedIt would seem like the wiring in my recently bought 'gaming' PC from eBay is shot. if you move the internal wires, around with the PC on (I mean, just poke the bundle of wires) all sorts can go wrong, if you move the fan wires, the fans come off and on and the graphic's card's power does the same. What is going on?? What can I do to sort this problematic wiring problem? I do not believe it to be the PSU. as if you poke the wires near to the PSU end of things, nothing happens at all.

I just had a new harddrive put in, luckily my computer was under warranty. It is an HP desktop running Vista. Every so often my clock shows the wrong time. I figured out it happens everytime my computer automatically synchronizes my time. Somehow it is synchronizing it wrong.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI didn't seem to find a solution for this issue. I have a wallpaper that's 1280x800 and that's my monitor's resolution as well. I tried to have it "fit to screen" but the wallpaper ends up being at the upper left side of my screen (cutting part of the wallpaper). I've also tried the other available options tiling and centering but they all came out to be the same. I have to change the resolution every time I turn on my laptop in order for it to actually fit to the screen; change 1280 to another resolution and then change it back again to 1280 for it to actually fit. I can send all my emails except to one person, who also uses comcast as the server. It seems that my machine is displaying the same icon regardless of the CD or DVD I put into my DVD drive. At one time, I put a Windows XP installation CD in my DVD drive, and the CD/DVD drive icon was replaced by the HP logo. I put another software or game into my DVD drive and I still got the HP logo as the CD/DVD drive icon. So I tried emptying all of my Prefetch files from my Prefetch folder, and I thought I solved the problem when I put the Windows XP CD into the drive and got the regular Setup icon. But when I put a different CD into the drive, the same Windows XP Setup icon showed up. And when I right-clicked 'Properties' on the CD/DVD drive Icon, in some cases there is no icon in the upper-left-hand corner next to the name of the CD.
