If I look at the drive in "My Computer" it is full with a file system marked as "Raw" and it wants me to format the drive.I used "Recover My Files" software and it shows some of the documents that are on the drive, but doesn't show any recovery.I looked at some internet post about the message I got and partition and boot problems like I have, but at this point I don't to try any else to make it worse.I would do a reinstall ,but on one of the drives I have some stuff that wasn't backed up.I never thought about backing it up because it wasn't on the C drive.
View 6 Replies View RelatedYesterday my (Vista 32) system crashed so hard that it took some system files with it, necessitating a complete re-install with all the headaches and thoughtless wreckage it does to one's file system. I'm desperately in need of many of my old "My Documents" files, etc. and have searched around for them, to no avail. I've been trying to access the old Users/Account folder I used in my previous installation (where I presume most of these files are located). I need to grand admin permissions to do this, and I do, but then a new window opens up and it's literally nothing but a *black* (not blank) empty space. I get no further explanation or access.
a) Where are my old files? Have they been deleted?? b) How do I access this folder? I've seen in other forums things that tell me this users/account folder may just be a sort of 'pointer' used for legacy purposes. What's going on?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI calculated that to migrate to Vista or Windows 7 will cost close to =A32000. not including my time - It will take around 100 hours. This is because many of my existing software / tools / utilities does not work on Vista and the vendors expect me to buy a new license because it is a "new product" even though it does exactly what it did before - just on a different OS. Even the products that do work have problems and glitches that have to be worked around. All this takes time MY VALUABLE time. In other words I am suffering because Microsoft want money. In the past some versions of windows were worth migrating to Windows 2000 and Windows XP were great
But most of the improvements to Vista / Windows 7 are mostly transparent to normal users - even monster power users like me. I believe Microsoft have a serious attitude problem. just wait until they take full advantage of TPM to screw even more money out of us. If I am wrong please point out a real tangible benefit that Vista or Windows 7 brings to a large percentage of users or to me. I also I can no longer buy a laptop because they only come with Vista GPU drivers (some come with buggy unsupported XP GPU drivers - great)
Much like everyone else, I'm having issues getting my vista/xp wireless network going. The routing of the network is like this: Motorolla modem ---> Netgear Wireless Router ---> Hard wired into Desktop running Windows XP Pro SP3 ----> Wireless to Vista Ultimate x32 In XP:I ran the network wizard and chose option 2 (the residential gateway one). The workgroup name on both computers is the same.
In Vista:
-- File sharing is turned on
-- Network discovery is turned on
-- Password protection is turned off
The issue: In XP I can see the "Users" folder but cannot access it. In Vista I can't see the XP desktop in the network folder at all. The only two things that show in the network are the laptop and the router. Thats it. Also, in the network map, nothing shows. Not the internet, not the router, nor the laptop. Forget about the desktop.
On Windows Mail (I am running 32-bit Vista) every few hours when I go to open a new folder a message appears where the message thread is usually shown which says that the message can't be shown because of low disk space and system memory. It does not appear to be because of a stuck email, as there are no emails in the Outbox and everything sends OK. Also, it happens when I click on random folders, from being in an existing folder.
For example, I may be in my inbox and want to check sent messages, so I'll click on the sent folder and then all messages will be hidden in all folders, and I'll just see the message about low disk space etc. If I exit Windows Mail then open it back up, the problem remains, though if I restart the computer it goes back to normal, for a few hours
I use Vista Home Premium 32-bit. I'm unable to delete a temporary folder on C:. This folder was used by an application to create an ISO file. If the job had succeeded the app deletes the temp file. I was forced to kill the job due to lack of disk space, so the folder was not deleted. In an account with Administrator privileges (not the hidden admin account), I ran the following commands in an elevated command prompt. Due to failure to delete higher folders, I am down at the lowest folder in a branch, "Documents", which is an empty folder. I would be grateful for any advice
C:vuimount5165804536UsersAdministrator>dir
Volume in drive C has no label.
Volume Serial Number is 846E-81AE
Directory of C:vuimount5165804536UsersAdministrator
02/11/2006 14:04 <DIR> .
02/11/2006 14:04 <DIR> ..
02/11/2006 14:04 <DIR> Documents
0 File(s) 0 bytes
3 Dir(s) 8,987,209,728 bytes free......
You can see from the dialog that the "del" command silently failed to delete the empty folder, "Documents".
Recently replaced an ACER factory load with a clean install of VISTA Home Preimum. My HD has 3 partitions C (228gb), D (227gb), and hidden (9gb). Would like to get rid of the hidden (ACER factory load ). My HD is 500 GB and my total use is 51 GB on C. Would it make sense to create 3 partitions C (small) for Vista and applications, D (small) for data and E (whats left) for whatever.
Is it possible / pratical to move the entire User folder to D or would this actually cause more future trouble than it is worth. Can any of this be done with Disk Management (when I right click on the hidden I get no options) or is a third party solution required ? Or should I just leave well enough alone
My buddy was bringing over some files for me on his laptop hdd running xp. I plugged it into my vista x64 computer via usb and I am having a few issues. The hdd shows up in My Computer and shows stuff in it but when I open it, it says that the folder is empty. I whent to Vistas disk manager and it shows everything is fine with the hdd but for some reason the files just wont show up.

In other versions of Windows its C:windowsfonts, which it appears to be in Vista, but once in C:Windows I cannot find the fonts folder. If I go through the control panel to the fonts folder it will not let me copy the front from there. It will let me right click the font to copy, but not let me paste onto a memory stick. I have already got into Folder options and made sure that Hidden files are visible.

Source: IE 7 users: stop looking at porn now! | Zero Day | ZDNet.com. Microsoft has reported sightings of exploitation of the recent vulnerability in IE7 on various porn sites. This isn’t really bad news, since no one looks at such improper things on the Internet, right?
According to an article posted late saturday night on Microsoft’s Threat Research Blog, approximately .2% of all worldwide users have been exposed to exploits against the data processing vulnerability, and the exploit is now appearing on pornography sites. If Microsoft’s numbers are correct, that means millions of systems may have been freshly compromised over the past few weeks. I would be surprised if we don’t see an uptick in the knock-on effects of more compromised systems, including higher levels of spam and credit card fraud. Since there is no patch for the IE problem as of right now, your best bet is to use an alternative browser such as Firefox, Opera, or even the Windows version of Safari. Remember, when you are browsing strange websites, it is important to use protection. You don’t know what kind of diseases they may have.
Please, add a feature, in a patch or sevice pack, to allow to change simply the location of C:Users, or C:UsersOneUser folder location. I have done many internet searches, this seems not to be possible simply. And don't tell me that I have to change each folder location (Music, Pictures, and so on). This does not fit my need.

I need to ensure that these users do not disable User Account Control on their machines as I am sure they will be tempted to do so. Is there a way I can do this (perhaps through Group Policy)?
I found several UAC-related settings and enforced them, but nothing stops them from disabling it entirely. Is there anything I can do besides the obvious choice of not granting them Administrative privileges?
we are running a workgroup based network and their are two different internets are being used in the network currently all users have administrative rights so that they can easily change the IP class to shift from one internet to the other Now i want to restrict users but i still want that users change their IP by themselves

View 6 Replies View RelatedInternet Explorer 7 in 64-bit mode: Awesome! Minefield, otherwise known as Firefox 3 Beta 3, the only x64 Firefox browser currently available. Incredible...BUT! There are no Flash/Shockwave, amongst others, 64-bit plug-in's available, so I am forced to use FF2 x86, as well as IE7 x86, and I don't understand how anybody browses without, at a minimum, the Adobe Flash Player plug-in.
Most sites that I frequent require the Adobe Flash player, some do the Shockwave, too. I watch a lot of CNN and NBC News, and both of those, amongst many others, require the Flash player. Is anyone aware of beta plug-in's, or an ETA as to when they'll be released? Is there any other (temporary) solution that I am unaware of.
