Oct 9, 2009I calculated that to migrate to Vista or Windows 7 will cost close to =A32000. not including my time - It will take around 100 hours. This is because many of my existing software / tools / utilities does not work on Vista and the vendors expect me to buy a new license because it is a "new product" even though it does exactly what it did before - just on a different OS. Even the products that do work have problems and glitches that have to be worked around. All this takes time MY VALUABLE time. In other words I am suffering because Microsoft want money. In the past some versions of windows were worth migrating to Windows 2000 and Windows XP were great
But most of the improvements to Vista / Windows 7 are mostly transparent to normal users - even monster power users like me. I believe Microsoft have a serious attitude problem. just wait until they take full advantage of TPM to screw even more money out of us. If I am wrong please point out a real tangible benefit that Vista or Windows 7 brings to a large percentage of users or to me. I also I can no longer buy a laptop because they only come with Vista GPU drivers (some come with buggy unsupported XP GPU drivers - great)
Manual Send/receive

Does Not Update (automatic Or Manual)
Jan 29, 2010I am running Windows Vista Home Premium and connect to the internet via a wireless router (Sky). I installed MSE a couple of weeks ago, but upon checking yesterday I found that it actually does not update (automatic or manual), instead it gives me the error message "Virus & Spyware definitions update failed. MSE was not able to check for updates - make sure computer is connected to the interned and try again", even though I am clearly connected to the internet (actually using it whilst trying to update MSE).
Having read your forum I uninstalled MSE, used a clean up tool to remove any potential remainders of previous anti-spyware programs and re-installed MSE. Initially the virus update worked fine, scanned the laptop and thought problem sorted. This morning, out of interest, I tried to update the virus definitions again, just to see if it works, but no, I am now getting the same error message again...also, for quite some time now, when Windows informs me that there are updates available and I try to install these I get an error message, plus I can't log into Messenger either?
SP1 For An MVP: Update Process Could Cause After A Manual Download
May 8, 2008I have been waiting for Windows Update to offer SP1 and it has not happened yet. I am in no rush for SP1, but am beginning to wonder if it will ever be automatically offered. Should I continue to wait, or should I manually download it from the MS site. My concern is the update process might know something about my system that could cause me problems after a manual download.

I have tried all the regular F keys and their combinations also all passwords from other BIOS Mfg. Is there any software out there that will access a computer without having the "Boot from CD Enabled" My laptop is now just a expensive paperweight and will remain so until I can get into it, if ever.

Jul 28, 2008Several times now I had to use the power button to shut down my pc.
This happens odd times. Last night I had been using Firefox, I.E. to visit various web sites (No porn sites) and a FTP program. When I went to shut down, I first closed all open programs except Zone Alarm and Norton and tried to close via windows. It did not work, even clicking on the browser icon did do nothing.
As I am not sure what to produce from the event viewer,I made a pic of July 27 events. I have not a clue how to read these events.
The other question, (just out of curiousity) When and why does one need to update the bios?
Manual Reboot After Freeze Harm Computer?
Apr 1, 2008Periodically, my Vista SP1 PC freezes up. The mouse vanishes unless you move to to the bottom of the screen where the taskbar is -- and you'll see a spinning blue circle - but no keys or clicks work. Here's the question. When this happens, does manually restarting by holding down the power button damage the computer or performance or reliability of Vista?

Nov 30, 2008Okay, I've heard about this horrible update and how it refuses to work, but I went around searching and found no one with the same problem as I did. So here is what happened:
1. I found it through updating, tried to update it, doesn't work (downloaded 9.5 mb, but failure on installation).
2. I manually downloaded from the Microsoft website, installed it, doesn't work (says install failed).
3. I closed everything, including anti-virus (Avast) and firewall. Installed it, doesn't work (same error message).
4. I reboot to try all the above steps again x2, doesn't work (still same error message).
Logging Off Stay Untill Manual Power Off
Apr 15, 2009Every time I try to shut down my computer or restart it, it goes to the "Logging Off" screen and stays there till the end of time or until I do a manual power off. After being forced to manually power off, I power back on and get the "Windows did not shut down properly" message. So basically, I can never shut my computer down properly.

Jun 11, 2008SP1 went through the full install routine, but when it reaches the end of Stage 3, I get a message saying that SP1 failed to install and it then goes through a lengthy process to revert to the computer's previous state. There is no detailed error message telling me why it failed to install. I've tried both the automatic and manual download versions of SP1. I've also tried it with all of my virus and internet security turned off. I still get the same message. how I can get SP1 to install.

Diskeeper 2008, Outlook consume alot of memory, Search Index, Svchost (some 10 different system programs), etc. So i need more Ram. But at the same time i was thinking of buying "Boostspeed" or a program like that to clear memory, so a shutdown is not needed every day. Anyone familiar with this kind of program?

Apr 23, 2008Im ready to plunge into vista 64/32. My system is up to date 6600 quad cpu, 8 gig, 8800GT (soon to be sli) and yada, yada. I play alot of BF2 mods, RTS (currently playing world in conflict), Crysis and COD4. My worries are drivers and game patches. I would like to go Vista 64, but is 64 good for games? I know I will get hit with frame rate, but hopefully playable frame rate.

Mar 18, 2008This is how it went.
1. Had to do windows update three times before it got them all. I had just done the other day the updates for march. The first update had 8 updates in it. Update number two had one update in it. Update number three had one update in it.
2. Had to do the WGA and did pass.
3. Then the SP1 update showed up in the Window Updates and started the download. Size was about 175.mb.
4. Had to reboot after the install. During windows shut down it stop to do some more installing of the SP1 update. It has 3 stages.
A. Stage one went somewhat fast.
B. Stage two went real slow up to about 12% then went fast and stop and stalled at 100% for some time.
C. Never seen Stage three.
5. Os rebooted and during the restart of windows just before the desktop shows up it started installing Stage three and went somewhat fast. After the desktop came on they was a lot of hard drive activity.
6. The first thing that I seen is that AVG did not restart. I just started it my self and all was good.
Things I seen after install and reboot.
I now have this icon in the lower right about some Customer Experience program that want's to run but you have to say yes to turn it on.
Under the Device manager I now have an error under Built-in-Infrared Device. ( No big deal)
Under the Task manager my Processes came back up to 54 and memory is running at 50% up from what I had it dwon to, 41 processes running & Physical Memory is 33% so it looks as if it went back in and turned some things back on or added some things.
I will have to google all the processes to find what is what.
So far this is all I have seen but then have not been running the SP1 but just a few. I will post as I find more things good or bad. I figure it will take a few reboots and some system maintenance to get the boot back up to par.
AOL Desktop Any Good?
Mar 11, 2009I saw the demo video and it looks like just an interface that assists "computer newbies" to work internet related items. Does it offer anything unique? Is it worth installing? Because I remeber it used to put a lot of background tasks that do all sorts of things. I know computers are more powerful nowadays but does it still noticably clog up your task manager?

Good Idea To Go From 32 Bit Vista To 64 Bit?
Dec 2, 2007I thought i'd give 64 bit a try, what a bad decision it's terrible. I've had nother but blue screeens and other problems with it.
Think i'll revert back to the good old trustworthy 32 bit, never had any problems with it.
Best / Good Drive Imager?
Apr 5, 2008best / good drive imager? I have Acronis 11 TI, but it started hanging on me yesterday under Vista. it always hangs for 40 secs or so running standalone. I tried Paragon Drive Backup 8.51, it imaged okay but wanted 2 hrs plus to restore 5gb *Acribuis tajes 8 min) - I guess It's using PIO1... (did not send them a note).
I tried rtt r-drive image and it imaged fine but I couldn't boot the damn Linux CD even with bios sata set to IDE/disa/legacy. (sent them a note) Tried casper but it images 1:1 and I don't have the HD capacity at the moment (sata 160 and IDE 80) and prefer the compressed images that I can put to DVD occasionally if I so choose (and I do) Latest PQDI on torrent is 7 which is flagged as Vista non-compatable anyway
(I didn't try it).
I used to use ghost but a while back when I upgraded, the boot cd caused a bluescreen because it wanted to call home on an intel NIC, so I went to Acronis.

I'm a story guy, System Shock 2 and Bioshock 1 having almost identical story flow really struck a chord with me, so I am hoping (without Kevin Levine) that BS2 will be just as good.
