Periodically, my Vista SP1 PC freezes up. The mouse vanishes unless you move to to the bottom of the screen where the taskbar is -- and you'll see a spinning blue circle - but no keys or clicks work. Here's the question. When this happens, does manually restarting by holding down the power button damage the computer or performance or reliability of Vista?
View 7 RepliesI got a blue screen on the 1st day I was up and running with Windows Vista 64 (pre-loaded on my new HP Pavilion computer). Everything was working beautifully, I was very happy that it all went well and I had no major problems getting set up. Then out of the blue, nothing was going on, I went to the START menu and as soon as I touched the Start button it crashed into blue screen.
WHen it restarted I got this message:

My computer freezes and reboots when I surf the web. I use Firefox, Internet Explorer just doesn't cut it for me. My Windows is fully up to date. It also happens when I use Azureus.
View 9 Replies View RelatedThe problem is that the machine freezes randomly, anywhere from 10 minutes to hours after reboot. It just locks up, mouse won't move, task manager won't open, nothing. I have to reboot. There are no events in the event viewer that correspond to this freeze-up. Original build used all the drivers off the mobo disk, and 2 HD's in RAID1. I called MS support and the first man took over my machine and did all sorts of things to "improve performance"("Your PC will work PERFECTLY from now on!"). After that it would do nothing but BSOD, even while trying to get into safe mode. I reinstalled onto a single drive. I got every up to date driver I could, Nvidia graphics, Intel ICH10 chipset, JMicron controller, Realtek HD Audio, Realtek NIC, asus monitors. No difference. I pulled out the RAM and did it with 1 stick--no difference. I set the BIOS to 9-9-9-24 and 2T, 1.5V as spec'd. It passes memtest inifinitely. I tried MS Support a second time. He ran some DOS deal (scf? skf? scannow) which found nothing. The Vista Diagnostics supposedly found and fixed issues, but he did not share those issues with me. It froze 40 minutes later. They are calling back tomorrow to see if it worked.
View 7 Replies View RelatedWhen I try to restart my computer after upgrading my count down meter stops responding at 26 seconds. I will then power off and wait for 50 seconds and restart my computer. Vista Home Premium is my operating system. This started to happen when I installed an external Hard Drive as a back up Disk onto my computer in order to have Windows do a auto back up every week. I do not get any error messages during reboot just freezes up count down. If I disconnect my external Hard Drive everything works just fine.
View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen I reboot my computer through Windows the computer shuts down correctly, but then the monitor remains black and the bios starts beeping out the error code for "VGA not detected". Why would this be? I am forced to press the power button and wait from 5 to 10 minutes to reboot normally. (I'm using Windows Vista Ultimate x64, have an ASUS P6T Deluxe motherboard and a Gigabyte Geforce GTX 280. 800 watts ZION power supply) Is this a BIOS settings or GPU problem? I already reseated the GPU. Could it be a power supply failure?

A few days ago, the computer would go to a blue screen saying it's dumping physical memory and then automatically reboots. Thinking my harddisk might be collapsing on me (I have a seagate barracuda 7200.11 500Gb HD with the SD15 firmware, the infamous crash friendly HD), I flash the HD with the SD1A firmware from seagate, then it was fine. 2days later, Catalyst started to cause problems by not responding, so I formated the drive and reinstalled vista ultimate, along with Catalyst, drivers from Mobo manufacturer ASUS, plus a couple of other softwares. That was yesterday, and now I'm getting the same blue screen back, or the computer just freezes.
My (stock speed) Intel Q9550 @2.83Ghz is running at temps of 105 degrees Celcius or 221 degrees farenheight (for those not from my country) I dont think this is normal, am i right? I think this is the sole reason for my constant computer freezes? Im guessing Im right and I have to get a new CPU fan/heatsink and some top quality thermal paste. I want the absolute best fan solution available with the best thermal paste known...
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have successfully been using p2p connections on my previous Windows Vista 32 setup on my laptop, however, since I bought this desktop with 64 bit windows my computer continually locks as I open p2p connections. Included programs which cause the lock are, Azureus, Blizzard Downloader, and Bit Torrent. I believe this may be a port issue. Not sure however. Has anyone had this issue with 64 bit Vista?
The freeze is almost instant as the program opens. Within 5 seconds of opening any of the above programs the comptuer locks/freezes requiring a restart as I can do nothing else. This is why I suspect a port problem; it seems as the firewall opens the p2p port, the computer instantly freezes.
The problem i have is when i load windows it comes up fine, but if i open up anything it freezes for 5-6 seonds then does it then freezes again and again i have updated all my drivers, when its been on for say 5-10 mins its fine seems to correspond with the vista update as soon as it pops up saying updates available about 2 mins after that its fine getting to the point where im going to trash it and reload xp

I'm running Vista Home Premium x64. At least 4-5 times a day my computer completely freezes up and will remain that way until I manually restart it. I've looked at the problem reports and solutions and there seems to be 2 main problems. Most of the errors are under the group called "windows." the Problem event name states there was a blue screen error. I've heard of the blue screen error, but I thought it was odd that my screen didn't actually turn blue. The other problems are under the group "windows explorer." The error name there is "AppHangB1." I have no idea what that means.
Just bought a brand new gateway nv52 with vista home premium x64 and it is constantly crashing like several times a day. I'll be running just a few programs like firefox and windows media player or word processor and the computer will freeze, the sound will take whatever the last little note that came out and stutter repeat it several times and then the entire screen will go completely blank to a dark blue screen.

This only happens the first time each day. It opens instantly for the remainder of the day. I am forced to power off and reboot which can happen 1 to 3 times before Windows Mail will open. I am running Vista with SP1. I have not installed anything new and no settings have been changed.
View 5 Replies View RelatedJust got a new HP Pavilion d6500t with installed Vista Ultimate x64. Has been tough going, but was scraping by until today. I installed Quickbooks (via download) and transferred my data files from my old pc to the new pc. Things seemed fine. then BAM!
The screen became "jumpy" and I received a number of error messages. Could not bring up Task Manager, so I had to shut down the pc manually (turned it off). Reboot involved a system check because of the manual shut-down. System check was fine...but, now my pc is frozen on a black screen with the hp logo in the middle. My choices are the usual: Press <ESC> to enable startup message, <F1> to enter System information...etc. I cannot go ANYWHERE from here. The F-keys are not responding AND I cannot even manually shut off the pc! I am a total novice when it comes to pc systems.
Here 3 days ago i was playing a game on my computer and suddenly it just shut off. when i try to start it again the fan is just running for 4 sec then it shuts down and reboots again. This loop will go on forever and it never starts. The only way of getting it to stop is cutting the power totally. I laid my computer to rest for a day and i tried starting again.
it runned perfectly for about 1 hour, then whitout any warning at all it just shuts off again, Just like if someone cutted the power. I have not been able to start it since. I have tried to plug out the harddisk too see if something on that might have caused the problem, but same thing happens, Keeps rebooting every 4th second.
I have a problem with this graphic card, when I run a game with better graphic details. My computer freeze for 2-5 second, next is black screen for 2seconds(as monitor is shuted down) and next is black screen while i don't stop the game. Next I see this-> I hope that you solve my problem(and see that image) BTW: if this problem was solved on this forum sorry, but on system instantForum i was never been and i don't know how it control. Or if this post is in bad category please send message for me when you move it.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI am running Windows Vista Home Premium and connect to the internet via a wireless router (Sky). I installed MSE a couple of weeks ago, but upon checking yesterday I found that it actually does not update (automatic or manual), instead it gives me the error message "Virus & Spyware definitions update failed. MSE was not able to check for updates - make sure computer is connected to the interned and try again", even though I am clearly connected to the internet (actually using it whilst trying to update MSE).
Having read your forum I uninstalled MSE, used a clean up tool to remove any potential remainders of previous anti-spyware programs and re-installed MSE. Initially the virus update worked fine, scanned the laptop and thought problem sorted. This morning, out of interest, I tried to update the virus definitions again, just to see if it works, but no, I am now getting the same error message again...also, for quite some time now, when Windows informs me that there are updates available and I try to install these I get an error message, plus I can't log into Messenger either?
I have been waiting for Windows Update to offer SP1 and it has not happened yet. I am in no rush for SP1, but am beginning to wonder if it will ever be automatically offered. Should I continue to wait, or should I manually download it from the MS site. My concern is the update process might know something about my system that could cause me problems after a manual download.

I have tried all the regular F keys and their combinations also all passwords from other BIOS Mfg. Is there any software out there that will access a computer without having the "Boot from CD Enabled" My laptop is now just a expensive paperweight and will remain so until I can get into it, if ever.

This happens odd times. Last night I had been using Firefox, I.E. to visit various web sites (No porn sites) and a FTP program. When I went to shut down, I first closed all open programs except Zone Alarm and Norton and tried to close via windows. It did not work, even clicking on the browser icon did do nothing.
As I am not sure what to produce from the event viewer,I made a pic of July 27 events. I have not a clue how to read these events.
The other question, (just out of curiousity) When and why does one need to update the bios?
Okay, I've heard about this horrible update and how it refuses to work, but I went around searching and found no one with the same problem as I did. So here is what happened:
1. I found it through updating, tried to update it, doesn't work (downloaded 9.5 mb, but failure on installation).
2. I manually downloaded from the Microsoft website, installed it, doesn't work (says install failed).
3. I closed everything, including anti-virus (Avast) and firewall. Installed it, doesn't work (same error message).
4. I reboot to try all the above steps again x2, doesn't work (still same error message).
Every time I try to shut down my computer or restart it, it goes to the "Logging Off" screen and stays there till the end of time or until I do a manual power off. After being forced to manually power off, I power back on and get the "Windows did not shut down properly" message. So basically, I can never shut my computer down properly.

View 6 Replies View RelatedSP1 went through the full install routine, but when it reaches the end of Stage 3, I get a message saying that SP1 failed to install and it then goes through a lengthy process to revert to the computer's previous state. There is no detailed error message telling me why it failed to install. I've tried both the automatic and manual download versions of SP1. I've also tried it with all of my virus and internet security turned off. I still get the same message. how I can get SP1 to install.

My system has two raid 1 arrays - one is running on XP Professional SP3 the other one is running on Vista x64 Ultimate SP1. When I start my virtual machines (either from the Virtual PC console or when double-clicking the *.vmc files) than everything is working fine on XP and the virtual machines are booting and running as expected. However, on Vista the following is happening (and I hope somebody has an idea):
1. Starting the Virtual machines from the console leads to an immediate reboot of my host machine (I can't even see any boot screen of the virtual machine - it is like clicking start in the VPC console -- > reboot of host).

so im not a computer expert and I just got my computer a few months ago. Recently I donloaded Skype 3.6, but i never knew it wasn't for Vista, so it messed my computer up. I deleted it, but now my right click dosnt work, only my touchpad and my computer it 100x slower. Someone told me i should just reboot my computer, but no matter what i try it dosnt reboot, any idea's on how to reboot??
