Windows Reboot Freeze Up Count Down

May 19, 2008

When I try to restart my computer after upgrading my count down meter stops responding at 26 seconds. I will then power off and wait for 50 seconds and restart my computer. Vista Home Premium is my operating system. This started to happen when I installed an external Hard Drive as a back up Disk onto my computer in order to have Windows do a auto back up every week. I do not get any error messages during reboot just freezes up count down. If I disconnect my external Hard Drive everything works just fine.

Home Premium X64 Freeze After Reboot

Jan 30, 2009

The problem is that the machine freezes randomly, anywhere from 10 minutes to hours after reboot. It just locks up, mouse won't move, task manager won't open, nothing. I have to reboot. There are no events in the event viewer that correspond to this freeze-up. Original build used all the drivers off the mobo disk, and 2 HD's in RAID1. I called MS support and the first man took over my machine and did all sorts of things to "improve performance"("Your PC will work PERFECTLY from now on!"). After that it would do nothing but BSOD, even while trying to get into safe mode. I reinstalled onto a single drive. I got every up to date driver I could, Nvidia graphics, Intel ICH10 chipset, JMicron controller, Realtek HD Audio, Realtek NIC, asus monitors. No difference. I pulled out the RAM and did it with 1 stick--no difference. I set the BIOS to 9-9-9-24 and 2T, 1.5V as spec'd. It passes memtest inifinitely. I tried MS Support a second time. He ran some DOS deal (scf? skf? scannow) which found nothing. The Vista Diagnostics supposedly found and fixed issues, but he did not share those issues with me. It froze 40 minutes later. They are calling back tomorrow to see if it worked.

Manual Reboot After Freeze Harm Computer?

Apr 1, 2008

Periodically, my Vista SP1 PC freezes up. The mouse vanishes unless you move to to the bottom of the screen where the taskbar is -- and you'll see a spinning blue circle - but no keys or clicks work. Here's the question. When this happens, does manually restarting by holding down the power button damage the computer or performance or reliability of Vista?

Screen Freeze Or Blue Screen Needing Reboot

Feb 1, 2009

I've had voltage issues causing my computer to freeze or reboot during games and dvds. Fixed that and the computer was fine after memtest showing no problems. That was late Dec.

A few days ago, the computer would go to a blue screen saying it's dumping physical memory and then automatically reboots. Thinking my harddisk might be collapsing on me (I have a seagate barracuda 7200.11 500Gb HD with the SD15 firmware, the infamous crash friendly HD), I flash the HD with the SD1A firmware from seagate, then it was fine. 2days later, Catalyst started to cause problems by not responding, so I formated the drive and reinstalled vista ultimate, along with Catalyst, drivers from Mobo manufacturer ASUS, plus a couple of other softwares. That was yesterday, and now I'm getting the same blue screen back, or the computer just freezes.

Puzzling Word Count

Jul 2, 2008

On my machine there are a number of stories I have written - varying from over 70000 words down to about 1000. I need the number of words to let potential editors know when I submit something to them and use the normal Word Count that comes with Windows. These are stored in a sub-section of Documents. Today I discovered that a right click offers "more" - giving me extra column categories than I didn't know about, and they include one specifically titled Word Count. This seemed like manna from Heaven until I created and used this extra column. Some of the variations between the original W Count from the document and the one automatically inserted by Windows in the column are quite striking.

For example: (Doc count first) 3959........3032 Diff of 927 words;
3786 3161 "
625 "
12279 10321 "
1958 "
5687 4565 "
1122 "

Email Count In One Folder Off By Two With Those Emails Missing

May 9, 2009

Recently I moved two pieces of mail from my Inbox to a folder. There were 5 other pieces of mail in that folder and the count was 5. After moving the mail though the count went up to 7 but the mail did not appear in the folder. Is there any tool or any option or any edit in a folder and/or the Registry purhaps where I can straighten this out. It isn't imperative I recover the email but at a minimum I would like to fix the email count in the folder to be accurate once again. This is Windows Mail in Vista Ultimate 64-bit with all the Microsoft Updates.

Newsgroup Shows Incorrect Unread Count

Jun 30, 2008

I've had this problem with XP/OE and it seems to exist with a new install of Vista / Windows Mail. After a while, a newsgroup starts showing an unread count when it shouldn't. For example, at the moment, m.p.vc.ide.general shows that I have 3 unread. When I select it, no posts show up. If I do "catch up" from the right click menu, it clears but it comes back next time I select the group.

It seems that this happens after running the automatic "Windows mail can optimize" thing. A second thing is that "catch up" seems to take a lot longer after running this optimize. Clicking on a message, doing a select all, and then mark as read works immediately. This also existed with XP pro. Is there any way to reset whatever is causing this?

Hard Disk Warning: High Reallocated Sectors Count

There seems to be a problem with my hard drive, it has a high number of reallocated sectors and im not sure why, as its a brand new hard disk. Does anyone know what i can do about this or why its happening? Heres what the problem is about: "Count of reallocated sectors. When the hard drive finds a read/write/verification error, it marks this sector as "reallocated" and transfers data to a special reserved area (spare area)."

Windows Reboot Showing Os:

Aug 30, 2009

I bought a new top of the line laptop one week ago with Vista Business X64. Windows will be working fine and then will reboot stating that an error in the operating system has been detected and a re-start is required. I tried using the recover disk to correct the problem but it tells me that a recently added camera or external device is disrupting the system. I have not added a camera or external device. I'M FED UP WITH TECHNOLOGY - I bought this laptop as a result of a catastrophioc failure in a laptop that was 15 months old.

Insert Windows Disk And Reboot

Jul 30, 2008

I'm running Vista home premium 64 bit with the latest SP. I just installed an old game (Sniper Elite) and after installation it asked for a reboot. I did this and got the message that windows couldn't start, this could be down to a change recently made etc etc. It then said to fix it

1- insert windows disk and reboot
2- select language and click next
3- Choose repair my computer

I did this but when I clicked repair my computer it didn't show any OS in the box to repair! It just says "If you did not see your OS in the list, click load drivers to load drivers for your hard disk"

REboot To BIOS Before Windows Loads.

Jun 19, 2008

I've just gotten an Acer Aspire 6920, which came with Windows Vista SP1 preinstalled (Beforehand, let me just say I normally use Linux, the only reason I want to keep this operating system is because there MIGHT be some programs that don't have native replacements, or run in wine that I may need at university - Without that,, I wouldn't even bother with Windows, apologies to Microsoft.)

After the usual "Hey there, you bought an Acer, let us preinstall about 50 programs, and let you reboot 6 times in the process", I was up and running (Well, after another reboot for updates that is.) - All went well for a day or so, no problems, starting up went fine for a few times. Then, suddenly, without anything from my part, the system refused to boot. It went through the BIOS fine, and showed the little blinking underscore (So, nothing in Windows yet, all BIOS) - Then it restarted, went through the BIOS, showed it's pretty underscore, rebooted, etc. etc. No error given anywhere during the process. Pressing F12 (Windows bootloader screen) did nothing, it'd just reboot before something could do anything.

I installed Ubuntu on the thing (Which, for the record, works absolutely brilliant.) - And allowed it to overwrite the MBR with GRUB. GRUB can boot into Ubuntu no-problem, and has detected Vista in the correct partition (SDA2) - It allowed me to choose it from it's list, after which the system instantly rebooted to BIOS->GRUB, and back to the selection list.

Reboot Windows Will Not Start Properly

Dec 24, 2009

I have tried to install Sniper Elite on my Toshiba Qosmio with Vista Home premium running 64bit. It seems to install OK (and is supposedly Vista compatible) and as for many other games asks for a reboot when finished. When I click yes for the reboot Windows will not start properly and in fact automatically uninstalls Sniper Elite. I will try and run compatibility mode when I get home tonight but thought if it is installing OK.........

It opens instantly for the remainder of the day. I am forced to power off and reboot which can happen 1 to 3 times before Windows Mail will open. I am running Vista with SP1. I have not installed anything new and no settings have been changed.

Windows Freeze After Hibernation/monitor Off

Oct 4, 2009

After doing a ton of updates for my Vista (haven't been able to update for months, but the problem was solved two days ago), it's been freezing up every single time hibernation mode is exited or if the monitor just turns off automatically after X amount of time to save power. After automatically going into hibernation mode/monitor off, I move the mouse, the desktop comes back, and only the mouse is movable, everything else is stuck. Only option is to reboot every time. Have done several virus/other scans with Nod32, Windows Defender, etc., all with negative results. I'm using a Dell 1525 laptop with Windows Vista Basic.

Windows Update Stage 3: Endless Reboot

Aug 17, 2009

We have a problem for which there seem to be countless posts from other frustrated Vista users - a Windows Update gets applied and the Vista machine goes into an endless loop of rebooting after saying 'Stage 3 of 3'. We took the computer to our local computer shop recently (in July 2009) and they reinstalled Vista for several hundred bucks (because we didn't have the skills to do a repair). But when we got it home - voila! it does it again!

Has Microsoft not fixed this problem? Is there not a permanent fix to it? It makes me want to buy a mac and throw Vista in the garbage. Everyone I know (everyone!) who went to Vista wishes they had stayed on XP until the 'fixed Vista' is released, which I understand is in Oct 09). Vista and Windows ME will go down in history as the worst operating systems that any company ever created. Now that I've finished whining, does anyone have any answers?

Reboot Computer Through Windows The Computer Shuts Down Correctly

Jun 16, 2009

When I reboot my computer through Windows the computer shuts down correctly, but then the monitor remains black and the bios starts beeping out the error code for "VGA not detected". Why would this be? I am forced to press the power button and wait from 5 to 10 minutes to reboot normally. (I'm using Windows Vista Ultimate x64, have an ASUS P6T Deluxe motherboard and a Gigabyte Geforce GTX 280. 800 watts ZION power supply) Is this a BIOS settings or GPU problem? I already reseated the GPU. Could it be a power supply failure?

No Reboot After Updates

May 3, 2008

I have had this issue for many months, now. I loaded Vista x64 Home Premium to run in a dual-boot configuration with my XP Pro. I do critical work so I didn't trust going to Vista exclusively. I mainly wanted it to see if I could utilize all my RAM and speed up Photoshop processing. I have had it working three or four times, (except for tablet functionality) then when I must re-boot because of SP1 and other security updates or in one case, I installed Office 2007, it does nothing on restart; black screens and just sits there, totally unresponsive.

No blinking of the LED which shows drive activity. When re-booting, F8 isn't working (nothing happens). Regarding the previous instances, I gave up trying to get it to respond and went back to booting into XP, which always works fine. Then after a period (usually a month or more) I will try booting into Vista, on restart, and viola, it works again! WTF is going on?

Sometimes Reboot From Sleep

Occasionally when I've been away from the computer for a short time and it goes into sleep mode (it`s set for 15 minutes), I can't bring up the display simply by hitting a key. I have to shut it down and restart. The boot button on the console will still be lit and I have to shut it down before I reboot. This probably happens about 30% of the time. The other 70% it comes back up with a key touch.

System Not Reboot

When I click start > restart it will shut down like it should, then it will go to the POST screen and from there it goes black and nothing happens (where it would normally load windows). I have taken out my C: drive and put it in another PC and it worked perfectly. I have a C and D drive which are both 2 separate hard disks and always worked fine in XP. How can I fix this? They are both IDE. I have to now power off the PC and power it on again to restart.

Screen Freezes, Needs Reboot

Green, White, and then the last is black that goes away and comes back like the monitor is trying to reset itself. Always black tho. I have to restart in order to get it to reboot.
