There seems to be a problem with my hard drive, it has a high number of reallocated sectors and im not sure why, as its a brand new hard disk. Does anyone know what i can do about this or why its happening? Heres what the problem is about: "Count of reallocated sectors. When the hard drive finds a read/write/verification error, it marks this sector as "reallocated" and transfers data to a special reserved area (spare area)."
I have a new Dell Studio XPS desktop that is running vista 64 bit. Love the machine...it works great. However, the hard drive loses free space on a daily basis. I've been working with computers for about 14 years and this is the first time I have had anything like this happen. Last night is a perfect example of what I'm talking about. I was going through my library of music files deleting duplicates(to open up space). When I went to bed I had about 45 GB of space open on my HD. This morning/afternoon when I got back on the computer, I only have 35 GB of space available. I'm not d/l anything, the only thing that was going on was that Itunes was running, playing music from a playlist. There was one new system restore point from sometime last night, but that only accounts for 1.5 GB at most. I have really only used WinXP since about 2001. I did have a new computer last year with vista, but hated the performance and switched it to XP. Any ideas on how I lost almost 10 GB of space overnight? Is it a vista issue? A system restore issue(currently set to automatic)?
I was going to run SP1 Disk Clean up tool but I need clarification from this warning from BRINK: "WARNING
Running the Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Disk Clean-up tool permanently removes the ability to uninstall the Vista SP1. Do not run this tool unless you have no plans of uninstalling the Vista SP1 and just want to save or regain hard drive space. The only option to remove the SP1 after using this tool is to do a clean install of Vista".
If for any reason I need to clean install Vista, would this be a problem? In other words, would I be able to... after having used SP1 Disk Clean up tool?
vista keeps saying that my harddrive is failing and to start backing up now i had this problem with only vista it was this for almost a year n the drive hasnt failed i used to have the warning turned off i found out how to do it in regedit on some page google brought me too. i just got done formating and i cant find the page any more now im getting the same message agian does anyone know how to turn it off?
I have four (4) hard disks C: D: E: F: all are connected with sata cable and power cable.(of course) The F: is outside from the pc and connected via external SATA and power cable (like usb NOT usb) I know,with USB external hard disk i can use the safely remove option.
Is there any option to safely remove SATA hard disk without Shut Down the pc?

1. I have a 120GB hard disk that shows a capacity of 105GB. No problems there--I understand that there's a restore partition and GB vs a billion bytes
2. My hard disk says that 54GB is being used.
3. However when I drag and select all folders in my C: and click properties, I only see 28GB of usage. This leaves an unaccounted-for 26GB.
I've just run disk cleanup and cleaned up my shadow copies before verifying all this. Besides at a MAXIMUM, system restore should only eat 15% of my hard disk (18GB). What explains this loss? How do I fight back and regain my hard-earned gigabytes?
On my machine there are a number of stories I have written - varying from over 70000 words down to about 1000. I need the number of words to let potential editors know when I submit something to them and use the normal Word Count that comes with Windows. These are stored in a sub-section of Documents. Today I discovered that a right click offers "more" - giving me extra column categories than I didn't know about, and they include one specifically titled Word Count. This seemed like manna from Heaven until I created and used this extra column. Some of the variations between the original W Count from the document and the one automatically inserted by Windows in the column are quite striking.
there are some bad sectors on my 160gb hdd at the beginning. i want to remove xp and install vista. is there a way that vista can mark the bad sectors and avoid them during installition itslef so there there are no issues after installition. xp didnt do that. it ran chkdsk after installition and while it works fine it is damn slow and booting also takes a lot of time. i know hdd replacament is the right thing but it takes a month here for seagate hdd replacments under warranty.

i got a warring at boot that 1 of my drives is failing. i ran the scandisk and found after About 85% done i have some bad sectors on my drive. scandisk didn't fix them so is there a way to mark them bad or have scandisk fix them?
When I try to restart my computer after upgrading my count down meter stops responding at 26 seconds. I will then power off and wait for 50 seconds and restart my computer. Vista Home Premium is my operating system. This started to happen when I installed an external Hard Drive as a back up Disk onto my computer in order to have Windows do a auto back up every week. I do not get any error messages during reboot just freezes up count down. If I disconnect my external Hard Drive everything works just fine.
Recently I moved two pieces of mail from my Inbox to a folder. There were 5 other pieces of mail in that folder and the count was 5. After moving the mail though the count went up to 7 but the mail did not appear in the folder. Is there any tool or any option or any edit in a folder and/or the Registry purhaps where I can straighten this out. It isn't imperative I recover the email but at a minimum I would like to fix the email count in the folder to be accurate once again. This is Windows Mail in Vista Ultimate 64-bit with all the Microsoft Updates.
I've had this problem with XP/OE and it seems to exist with a new install of Vista / Windows Mail. After a while, a newsgroup starts showing an unread count when it shouldn't. For example, at the moment, m.p.vc.ide.general shows that I have 3 unread. When I select it, no posts show up. If I do "catch up" from the right click menu, it clears but it comes back next time I select the group.
It seems that this happens after running the automatic "Windows mail can optimize" thing. A second thing is that "catch up" seems to take a lot longer after running this optimize. Clicking on a message, doing a select all, and then mark as read works immediately. This also existed with XP pro. Is there any way to reset whatever is causing this?
I have installed the security patch for IE and I did a disc check afterwards when I noticed , on completion that Windows had made alterations to the file system and that there was 8KB of bad sectors but the disc was clean ! Is this something that I should be worried about ?
Hi, new here. I have a sony vaio laptop that has been working perfectly up until a few days ago. I got a blue screen that said unmountable boot volume. I have a vista restore/repair disk but no sony restore disks.I'm not really sure if mine came with any? I used the vista disk and when i try to repair it it says no hard disk found as the error. Is there a way to get my computer to see the hard disk? I've tried using the command prompt but a lot of things i've tried like chkdsk aren't working or i'm not sure what they mean.
I have had a problem where, apparently at random, my hard drive starts running and ties up my laptop to the point nothing will run. This lasts anywhere from 5 to 18 minutes. I have not been able to reproduce this on purpose, but yesterday it happened 3 times when I started either Outlook or Foxfire. Today it happened when I tried to sync my PDA. I have tried to turn off any indexing I can find, but no help. It doesn't always happen every day, but will do it several times a week. I am running on a Toshibe Satellite laptop with Vista Home Premium.
We have 2 identical Dell XPS desktop PCs, both with duo 2.66 processors, 240 GB hard drives, and running Vista Home Premium SP1.For a few years now we've been using a Linksys cable modem which has 4 Ethernet outlets (numbered 1-4) and paired antennas for Wireless-G. My PC was on Ethernet output 1 and my wife's PC was on a Wireless-G adapter. Recently my ISP doubled its speed to 16,000 kbps, but this seemed to have very little effect on my wife's Wireless speed. Rather than hassle with the wireless system, I uninstalled the Wireless-G adapter and ran a new Ethernet cable from output 2 to my wife's PC.The weird thing is that when both PCs are turned on and connected to the Internet, my PC (Ethernet 1 output) seems to be continuallyaccessing the hard drive. While this is happening, the output 1 and output 2 LED's on the modem are madly flickering, as is the disk access light on the PC. No unusual hard disk activity is going on with the wife's PC. If I shut down either PC, this excessive hard disk activity doesn't take place and the output light (1 or 2) is steady. I've even tried leaving both systems totally inactive for many hours, other than an automatic check for mail every 5 minutes.
Every 1/2 hour or so I'd look in and see that the hard drive activity is still going on and the output lights are flickering. Whatever is going on is happening whether the PCs are active or idle. This has been going on for 3 days now, 16 hours a day, ever since I added the new Ethernet line!
if there are any good hard disk utilities available that perform more comprehensive testing/correction than those performed by Windows own check disk utility?
i have a sata hard drive running windows vista 32 business. how would i format the hard drive completely and start again? i did a reinstall last weekend but it would not give me the option for format from the DVD, it just gave me a "windows.old" folder which wasn't really what i wanted.
I am using Vista Home Premium, so I do not have the CompletePC Backup feature, sadly. I just finished reinstalling VISTA and a ton of programs, only to realize stupidly that I am running out of hard disk space because of all the downloading I am doing. It would be pure hell to have to reinstall everything again.
I want to replace my hard drive with one with double the capacity. Can I copy / backup / whatever the entire c drive on to an external drive, then copy the entire contents back on to the new disk drive? Apparently, I have to purchase a product such as Acronis True Image Family.
I am looking for the recommendation of utilty erasing data from harddrive. I need the utilty which: 1. Will NOT stop on errors (disk write errors) but it will continue until all disk is done or 2. Will allow me to choose sectors to overwrite.
I've used this forum A LOT to find answers to the many problems I've had with my pc - now I have one that I can't find a solution for, so here I am posting! I'm trying to format a new Seagate Barracuda 1.5TB hdd but it won't go any further than 73%. Computer Management tells me that its still formatting (i.e. NO error message) but its been there for hours. I've tried formatting from the Vista installation cd during boot but it plain refused (I forget the error message), it won't even do a quick format in Computer Management. Is my drive humped?
I can't afford to lose any of my data (who can?), I'd like to have something on my laptop that monitors the hard drive - and any external USB drives. Free is good but I also want quality. Perhaps some readers have suggestions for software for me? Don't worry, I keep an external hard drive for backup and use it often. But, it wouldn't hurt if I had something to monitor my drives. The external hard drives crap out to often and leave me without a backup until I replace it.
Hey again I???m here as a new user of vista and Im going trough a bunch of problems. As for now one day I ran the diskeeper and some how I lost 45 GB of hard disk space for no real reason. After that I ran it again but it didnt help, I don???t know if it has to do with the diskeeper or maybe some other type of problem with the computer applications.
Recnetly I noticed I had a 4th hard disk drive instead of 3. The strange thing is that I can't remember adding one.. I just got my 2 internal hard disk drives and 1 external hard disk. But now it shows 4. Also, when I try to open this 4th hard disk it gives an acces denied error message. Also, I'm unaible to scan the hard disk. For my other hard disks, when I right click, I got the option to scan for virus. This option isn't in the list when I right click this new station. Here are the menu list by right clicking on the HDD's.
How do you exactly partition a hard drive or can some one tell me a good place to get a partitioning program or website for a free partitioning program downlaod and what is a good program cause i want to get a good program and not a peice of crud.
I've basically screwed up documents and important stuff so i need help reinstalling vista from the dvd, Formatting the hard drive. My M/B is a ga-p35-ds3l and i cant use my keyboard if the shut down is forced it auto chooses.
