I have installed the security patch for IE and I did a disc check afterwards when I noticed , on completion that Windows had made alterations to the file system and that there was 8KB of bad sectors but the disc was clean ! Is this something that I should be worried about ?
View 5 RepliesWhen I downloaded the Windows Easy Transfer utility for a 32 bit version of Windows Vista (Windows6.0-KB928635-x86) for file transfers to Windows 7 it will not install. I receive an error message that says, "The update does not apply to your system." But my system is a 32 bit version of Vista. I am trying to get prepared for my Windows 7 version that will arrive in October. Does anyone have any idea why I would be getting this error message?

It's at stage 3 and when it's almost complete it's starts to "replace invalid security Id with default security id for file ******" it's been doing this for a while now and I was wondering what I can do to speed it up. It's currently at 170000, and if I try to restart the computer the login screen will not load if I skip the disk check.

I finally checked and I have it on the list of installed updates a dozen times--but it still keeps appearing on my task bar asking to be installed. It's like a spell gone wrong. I am unable to install Security Vista update KB967723 (released very recently). When I attempt to install this patch I get the error code '80070020'.
I have downloaded this patch manually to install with no success. I have tried turning off my anti-virus (AVG) and windows firewall, with again no success. I keep getting the above error code.
I have also scanned my system with AVG, Windows defender, Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal & Ad-Aware (nil viruses etc...)
I am running Windows Vista 64bit edition on an Asus P5Q Deluxe motherboard, Intel Q9540 2.66gz Quadcore processor with 4gb RAM. My system has been running fine for the last year and just last night (27th June 2009) windows told me there were 3 updates that should be installed. I only noticed one of the update names which was Internet Explorer 8, the other 2 were security updates or something - really not sure though. The total of the downloaded updates was around 280mb.
Anyway... So I started installing the updates and walked away. When I came back there was a Terms & Agreement box for Internet Explorer 8 which I agreed to. Once that finished it came back to my desktop and said "windows needs to restart to configure the updates, please restart now."..........
Dell forward a bunch of updates from Microsoft yesterday. One was Security Update KB950759. After this was installed I couldn't access the internet. After I uninstalled it everything worked. Again today it was sent by Dell and installed-same thing, couldn't access internet until I uninstalled it.
View 7 Replies View RelatedA Dell Inspiron 1521 running Vista. There are several problems that all seem related but the most obvious one is that I can't update Vista. It is set up to update automatically. However, the "New Updates are Available" Icon appears on the task bar. If I click on it a window comes up and immediately disappears. If I hunt through the help menus until I find a link that says "Click to open Windows Update" the same thing happens: a window opens and immediately shuts. Similarly if I go to the control panel and click Windows Update nothing happens.
If I right click on it and choose Explore a window comes up but it is empty. The Default Programs icon is similarly unresponsive. If I click on the Windows Defender Icon and click on that and say to update, it returns error 0x8007045a. In addition to that, the backup/recovery thing returns errors. And when I try to run Ad-Aware it hangs. All of these failures are related to security

I suppose I could uninstall VirtualPC since I have not been using it lately.
I should mention that it does not show up in the Control Panel | Progarams and Features Installed Updates list, though.
One other thing: VirtualPC is not supposed to work on Vista, but it does. In fact my son does development using it daily.

I play Sims 1 and I use PSP 7 to recolor and recreate objects and I have a program that transfers the objects from the Sims game to my PSP 7 program called Transmogrifier. The way it works is that when you are finished working on you iff object in PSP 7 you transfer it back to the Sims game via this Transmog program. The object is coming back to the Transmog but not appearing the game. There is a folder in the download section of the Sims game called "transmogrified" and the objects are supposed to go directly into it when I import the object. It's not happening. The only thing I can figure is it must be the administrator/security issue that won't allow the Transmog to put a file into the Sims folder. How can I get around it? The computer will collect dust if I can't contiinue with my hobby.

Does anyone know what i can do about this or why its happening? Heres what the problem is about: "Count of reallocated sectors. When the hard drive finds a read/write/verification error, it marks this sector as "reallocated" and transfers data to a special reserved area (spare area)."

The warning gives me the option to deselect the 'always ask when opeing this file', but it reappears the next time I open the file and the warning is reselected even though I already deselected it. The warning has a help link on the bottom ' how can I decide what software to run' and all the help links talk about is downloading which has nothing to do with this warning dialog box. How do I get rid of this annoying security warning on this file. If I go to properties for the file, there is an unblock option which I select and apply, but it too reappears the next time I open the file properties.

I want to disable ALL security on my Vista System. I don't want any passwords. I want every file visible/readable/writable/executable by ANYBODY who happens onto my network.
I don't want any firewalls. I don't want any antivirus. I don't want any automatic updates of any kind to anything. I don't want any popups asking for permission to do anything. I'd rather not have all the bloat and duplication in folders for different users. I want a single-user system and to be administrator of all things. Yes, I'll put some tiny subset of this back with third-party tools THAT I CONTROL. I've been poking around fixing up one issue after another...but it's a task. Is this info all in one place? Or better yet, a magic incantation to remove ALL of it in one fell swoop?

I have a system that has FAT16 file system on it. I have that file system on that for some reason so I don’t need to upgrade on that….but recently I had some files deleted and now I need to get them back. They are important for my official use and hold great importance. I know that there is software for recovery but since I have a FAT16 file system I guess that all won’t work on that.

It blocked everything I did between using my Daughters laptop and gathering info from the internet I did get the PC Doctor downloaded (took forever) and installed on the infected PC then ran a scan only to find out that I had to purchase the tool to remove it. I did and the Pc worked fine or so I thought.
DD looked up lowes last night and now today it is again posessed it will not let me run system restore everytime I look up something on the internet it redirects me to stupid pages that have nothing to do with what i key in. so I am trying system restore and it wont open it tells me it is already running. This is a vista home basics I have no idea if it is 32 or 64.
