Mar 23, 2008I have recieved a security alert saying "security setting wii not allow this file to be downloaded. I have tried many times to correct this problem and must admit defeat.

Jun 29, 2009My computer is running the concistency check. It's at stage 3 and when it's almost complete it's starts to "replace invalid security Id with default security id for file ******" it's been doing this for a while now and I was wondering what I can do to speed it up. It's currently at 170000, and if I try to restart the computer the login screen will not load if I skip the disk check.

How can I locate the file? It's not in the download folder. If I search for the file name nothing comes up (I sure miss the old search process). I need to copy this file and move it to a flash drive -- in order to move it to an older laptop that no longer has Internet access - but runs my embroidery sewing machine. But I can't find the file. Mar 23, 2008I have a wireless network of 4 computers. 2 x XP desktops 1 x XP laptop and a new Vista desktop. These are networked via a Belkin router. I have absolutely no problems with the network when it is open, however as soon as I enable security settings I encounter problems. The printer (which is conected to the Vista machine, although visible, is not able to be accessed by the XP machines, both Vista and XP machines although showing that they are able to access files on each other do not. As soon as I disable the security settings and become an Open network straight away all three XP machines can print through the Vista machine and I can access and move files around the network no probs. I have had the Vista machine for 9 days now and have spent about 6 hours each day attempting to sort one problem after another out, I have had it back to the technicians at the shop twice for them to resolve simple problems for me and I am getting very frustrated by this whole Vista thing.

Feb 19, 2009I just downloaded an .exe file fromt the internet and saved it to my harddrive. But I must've done something wrong in the process because when I check the location I saved it to, it shows a shortcut (.lnk) that won't do a thing if I double click on it. Is there a way to change the extension back to .exe so I can run it (it's an install program)? I've already scouted the forums and noticed you can do something with your regs, but I'm afraid that will affect other files on my computer and I'm only having problems with this particular file.

May 5, 2008I have had the common problem on not being able to install KB938371 update which is one of the 3 prerequisites to downloading through Microsoft Update the SP1. I have tried all the tricks and suggestion published throughout the web except an in place reinstall of Vista Business. This is highly undesireable since my sony laptop will only reinstall Vista Business as per original with all the software originally shipped which is a pain to remove.
If I download the entire sp1 750mb file, will it install without the prerequsite files? I have read that the prerequisites were actually a compilation of sp1 files and not an actual update to Vista. This being the case, it seems that if the sp1 file were downloaded it would work.

Dec 1, 2007I bought this new computer with Vista (expensive too!) and now I can't do the thing I love best with my computer. I play Sims 1 and I use PSP 7 to recolor and recreate objects and I have a program that transfers the objects from the Sims game to my PSP 7 program called Transmogrifier. The way it works is that when you are finished working on you iff object in PSP 7 you transfer it back to the Sims game via this Transmog program. The object is coming back to the Transmog but not appearing the game. There is a folder in the download section of the Sims game called "transmogrified" and the objects are supposed to go directly into it when I import the object. It's not happening. The only thing I can figure is it must be the administrator/security issue that won't allow the Transmog to put a file into the Sims folder. How can I get around it? The computer will collect dust if I can't contiinue with my hobby.

The warning gives me the option to deselect the 'always ask when opeing this file', but it reappears the next time I open the file and the warning is reselected even though I already deselected it. The warning has a help link on the bottom ' how can I decide what software to run' and all the help links talk about is downloading which has nothing to do with this warning dialog box. How do I get rid of this annoying security warning on this file. If I go to properties for the file, there is an unblock option which I select and apply, but it too reappears the next time I open the file properties.

Chaning Setting Control Pannel, Power Setting : Registry Resets Not
Jun 22, 2008It has happened occasionally, but with no predictability that I can see. I change settings in control pannel / power settings / balanced to 10 min for monitor and never for computer. I check the "advanced settings" to assure that they are the same. I use balanced because that seems to be the default in the registry. I do not see the actual settings in the registry. Every so often Vista resets the settings back to 20 min for the monitor. I have looked at but it speaks of "System Settings page" - I don't know what that is. In any case, my settings have no effect and I can't get the monitor to dependably go to standby after 10 minutes.

Mar 14, 2009I turned on my computer today and instead of starting up it told me something similar to "there is a missing or corrupt file and windows could not start" and then it told me I had to put in my vista disk and try to repair the problem. I put in the disk, but couldnt get the computer to run the disk from the startup menus. I then went got frustrated and clicked on "recovery partition", where it told me I could re-download vista. I hoped at some point I would be able to repair my existing vista instead of installing a new one, but instead this new vista seemed to completely override my old vista, and then it told me all my old files were put into a "windows.old" file. Then after logging in it told me I had to re-buy vista, which i didn't do. When I logged in using the limited version of vista all of my files were gone and it seemed like all of my existing settings were erased. I was even disconnected from the internet. I'm wondering if there is some way I can repair and recover my old OS and get rid of this trial version.

Jul 29, 2009I have Windows Mail set to download email from Google locally via POP3. It has been working great and I've been receiving all of my emails, no problem. Yesterday, Windows Mail started getting really slow when it came to reading messages. It may take it 2-30 seconds for an email (which has already been downloaded locally) to show up in my preview pane.
I did go through the steps are running wmutil151 and "SlowWinmail_Fix" (clears the blocked site list), which I found in this forum. I also opened Windows Calendar for a few minutes. None of them seemed to have an impact on the situation. I moved the mail folder to a different drive. No impact.
Today the problem changed and worsened. Now when I select a message, (existing or a fresh inbox message), the preview pane (only) will gray slightly for the same period of time, then turn the normal white, and no message is displayed. If I double click on a message, after the delay, it comes up, again with a blank body (the headers are all there at the top).
Messages with attachments will show the attachments, but when you double click on them, it pops up with an error box, "Windows cannot find ''. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. A third party tool ('Windows Mail Attachment Extractor') can pull down those same attachements, no problem. System is Windows Vista, 32 bit mode. Plenty of hard drive space left. The only significant recent change was the upgrade to Firefox 3.5. Antivirus software is AVG.

Oct 25, 2009Whenever i download a file, the download bar shows, but after completion i go to open the file, but it shows that it has 0 bytes. I looked online and some people said it was because of my anti virus (AVG) . i recently updated it to ver. 9. I thought it was because i updated it, so i restored my computer to prior the installation (about 2 days). i still get the same problem. Feb 1, 2008Whenever i download a file such as .msi installer, .exe executable, or .zip archive with IE and run it, it crashes (not IE but the file that was downloaded.) This recently started happening on my Home Premium 64-bit Vista installation, and the problem remains after reinstalling Vista two times from scratch. If the file was downloaded on another PC and saved to a flash drive, it runs fine on Vista. I have tried the sfc /scannow command, as well as disabling any firewall, antivirus, etc. and changing the IE settings. This occurs on a clean installation of Windows Vista also. Can't Install Any Downloaded Software
Mar 23, 2008Any time I try to install any downloaded software, for example Winamp,Firefox, etc, it does not work. I will get a popup that says "(program name) has stopped working. A problem has caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."
It has done this with every file I've downloaded and tried to install. Also,some MSI files I've downloaded (turbotax update, etc.) do nothing after I try to run them. I've verified that the software is compatible with Vista (per the places I've downloaded them from), turned off UAC, disabled Windows Firewall and Defender, Run as Admin, and even tried in Safe Mode. Also, I've run Windows Update and it says there are no available updates.
