Just bought my son a new PC with Vista HP 32 bit - he installed Warhammer online but it would not run the game - the error message was asking for a DX9 DLL file - downloaded and installed that, the game now runs, BUT will not boot next time he turns it on..... he has to boot at a restore point before the DLL was installed - is there a way round this as its a pain to do this every time he wants to play?

How can I locate the file? It's not in the download folder. If I search for the file name nothing comes up (I sure miss the old search process). But I must've done something wrong in the process because when I check the location I saved it to, it shows a shortcut (.lnk) that won't do a thing if I double click on it. Is there a way to change the extension back to .exe so I can run it (it's an install program)? I've already scouted the forums and noticed you can do something with your regs, but I'm afraid that will affect other files on my computer and I'm only having problems with this particular file.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have had the common problem on not being able to install KB938371 update which is one of the 3 prerequisites to downloading through Microsoft Update the SP1. I have tried all the tricks and suggestion published throughout the web except an in place reinstall of Vista Business. This is highly undesireable since my sony laptop will only reinstall Vista Business as per original with all the software originally shipped which is a pain to remove.
If I download the entire sp1 750mb file, will it install without the prerequsite files? I have read that the prerequisites were actually a compilation of sp1 files and not an actual update to Vista. This being the case, it seems that if the sp1 file were downloaded it would work.
I have recieved a security alert saying "security setting wii not allow this file to be downloaded. I have tried many times to correct this problem and must admit defeat.

View 4 Replies View RelatedAs far as I can determine, this update (released 22Oct08) does not work, at least not with Windows Vista Home Premium. I had update 7 running, and got an update notification for Release 10 earlier today. Downloaded and installed the update, tried the Java test page, Firefox (both 3.0.3 and today's Minefield beta-test for Firefox 3.1) hung. Tried the update in IE7, that, too, hung.
Went to Control Panel, clicked on the Java icon, had some problems opening it; when it did finally open, I went into Advanced and found that Update 10 was not recognizing IE. Opened IE, redownloaded the off-line update, to see if that worked; answer is, no, it still did not recognize IE. Back to Java, found the off-line installed for Update 7, removed 10, reinstalled 7; Java works once again. In the midst of this aggravation, trying to figure out what the problem was, I did find one link to an article that said Update 10 had been delayed due to some unspecified problem. Seems to me that, at least for Vista Home Premium, there is still at least one unspecified problem with Update 10.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI was trying to import some videos I downloaded online and it says,"The file C:UsersRosalieDownloads[DB]_Naruto_Shippuuden_010_[EC7747DE].zip cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again." But, I already installed the DivX codec that the website I downloaded the clip from recommended and I tried restarting WMM.
I know that I did this before on my old computer. I downloaded videos from the same website, and I had to download the DivX codec. Once I downloaded the codec, the files worked, and i was able to download them. Does anyone know why it won't work for me now? Could it have anything to do with the files having been downloaded as zipped folders?
My vista keeps locking up after various amounts of time, no matter whether its just idling, or im making the computer work hard. As ive read on other topics, I think its a driver issue, but I just dont know what to do. I will try another fresh vista install tomorrow and get the vista updates quickly to see whether that helps the situation. I have ensured it isnt overheating like it did initially when I bought the system, and it is now a safe and low temperature in a running state. Ive re-installed, windows, and it froze after I installed the chipset driver. I contiuned, and found a sound driver wasnt digitally signed. However it still crashes. I have got the latest drivers for it. For it to crash, all i did was open recycle bin, from idle state.
I shouldn't be surprised but here goes....I checked today for SP1 on windows update.. According to my computer no updates available however updates were last installed on 03/13/08 and yet when you look at installed updates it shows a windows defender update installed today. I have been reading several posts on this problem and have noticed that Carey Frisch posted a link to troubleshoot and now here is a problem and that is none of these apply to me... View 9 Replies View Relatedlet me start this nightmare story i had just done a fresh restalled and spent hours on getting everything installed on pc all was fine working perfectly untill that is i installed vista service pack 1 from windows updates the update process crashed halfway through so i had the only option to restart my pc then came the blue screen of death and it metioned if you have any new hardware installed make sure all drivers are installed etc etc of course i know it wasnt hardware it was because of me restating my pc half way threw the service pack 1 and the full files not been installed threw the update process crashed was the reason for the blue screen but the blue screen had notes advising me to clear shadow memory in the bois and any other memory so i stupidly assumed this was channel mapping and bank mapping and put them all to zero please see jpeg of what i changed i basically disabled everything that was enabled and put all the mapping channels and bank channels to zero and now when i switch on my laptop i get a blank screen with no post no ...........

View 9 Replies View RelatedI turned on my computer today and instead of starting up it told me something similar to "there is a missing or corrupt file and windows could not start" and then it told me I had to put in my vista disk and try to repair the problem. I put in the disk, but couldnt get the computer to run the disk from the startup menus. I then went got frustrated and clicked on "recovery partition", where it told me I could re-download vista. I hoped at some point I would be able to repair my existing vista instead of installing a new one, but instead this new vista seemed to completely override my old vista, and then it told me all my old files were put into a "windows.old" file. Then after logging in it told me I had to re-buy vista, which i didn't do. When I logged in using the limited version of vista all of my files were gone and it seemed like all of my existing settings were erased. I was even disconnected from the internet. I'm wondering if there is some way I can repair and recover my old OS and get rid of this trial version.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have Windows Mail set to download email from Google locally via POP3. It has been working great and I've been receiving all of my emails, no problem. Yesterday, Windows Mail started getting really slow when it came to reading messages. It may take it 2-30 seconds for an email (which has already been downloaded locally) to show up in my preview pane.
I did go through the steps are running wmutil151 and "SlowWinmail_Fix" (clears the blocked site list), which I found in this forum. I also opened Windows Calendar for a few minutes. None of them seemed to have an impact on the situation. I moved the mail folder to a different drive. No impact.
Today the problem changed and worsened. Now when I select a message, (existing or a fresh inbox message), the preview pane (only) will gray slightly for the same period of time, then turn the normal white, and no message is displayed. If I double click on a message, after the delay, it comes up, again with a blank body (the headers are all there at the top).
Messages with attachments will show the attachments, but when you double click on them, it pops up with an error box, "Windows cannot find ''. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. A third party tool ('Windows Mail Attachment Extractor') can pull down those same attachements, no problem. System is Windows Vista, 32 bit mode. Plenty of hard drive space left. The only significant recent change was the upgrade to Firefox 3.5. Antivirus software is AVG.
Whenever i download a file, the download bar shows, but after completion i go to open the file, but it shows that it has 0 bytes. I looked online and some people said it was because of my anti virus (AVG) . i recently updated it to ver. 9. I thought it was because i updated it, so i restored my computer to prior the installation (about 2 days). i still get the same problem. This recently started happening on my Home Premium 64-bit Vista installation, and the problem remains after reinstalling Vista two times from scratch. If the file was downloaded on another PC and saved to a flash drive, it runs fine on Vista. Any time I try to install any downloaded software, for example Winamp,Firefox, etc, it does not work. I will get a popup that says "(program name) has stopped working. A problem has caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."
It has done this with every file I've downloaded and tried to install. Also,some MSI files I've downloaded (turbotax update, etc.) do nothing after I try to run them. I've verified that the software is compatible with Vista (per the places I've downloaded them from), turned off UAC, disabled Windows Firewall and Defender, Run as Admin, and even tried in Safe Mode. Also, I've run Windows Update and it says there are no available updates.

View 4 Replies View RelatedA friend of mine has Vista on his 2 home computers. His and his Wife's. They recently rearranged furniture, including the computers. When they plugged them all back in to their router, neither their computers, nor their xbox, could connect to the internet anymore. They called their ISP(Charter Communication) and Charter told them nothing was wrong that their cable modem was showing up fine and seemed to be working just fine. So they had a tech come out to their place and the guy was baffled. He swapped out their cable modem but said nothing was wrong with the old one, he just swapped them to make them feel better I guess. But even the tech guy couldn't understand why they suddendly cannot access the net. Even removing the router from the equation did not help one little bit. A buddy of theirs brought his laptop over to their house and was able to connect to the net through their cable modem so we know the modem is working just fine.
Well, thats when my Brother told them to call me. I did all the basic things you'd expect, starting from scratch. We started with connecting directly to the cable modem and got what I expected, zilch. I checked ipconfig and noticed they had a 169.*.*.* IP on both computers. by the way I'm doing all this long distance since they live several hours away from me. That 169 is wrong, or at least it seems like it to me so I banged away trying to change that with no results. Every change I made
reset to 169 instantly. Even a restart didn't help. So I had them plug it into the router and got a normal 192.*.*.* IP. At this point, several hours after we began, I gave up for the time being on that particular problem............

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've seen this problem posted a number of times, and either there's no fix for it or it was attributed to something that doesn't apply to my situation. Here's the description:
- With Firefox and Google Talk, any downloaded file cannot be opened by the program.
- IE8 and Chrome both work, and since I use Chrome for everything, I never noticed the issue in Firefox. File transfer in Google Talk has been screwed since I installed Vista.
- It happens when they're run in Administrator Mode as well
- The files do not appear in the specified Download directory (my UserDownload folder)
- A search shows that the files do not exist -anywhere- on any of my HDs
- The files aren't in AppDataTemp either
- I do NOT have AVG, nor have I ever had it installed on any of my HDs, ever
- The account I use is the original account I created on install, and has Administrator privileges
- I have already granted special permissions for all Users to Create/Modify files within the folder
- The User folders are not in their original location. They've been moved to a separate HD specifically for Docs/Downloads.
The most common answer I see is "Turn off UAC," but I see that as a last resort and would prefer a different solution. I'm tempted to just switch to 7 today and deal with the RC but I'm wary of the problem not being fixed there either.
All my outgoing messages stay in my outbox. I have downloaded the KB941090 fix but it does not help.
