I really need to change a system file called 'hosts'. I've changed it many times before, but today I'm not allowed. I access the file, make a very small change, then try to save it just by leaving the path as is. Then I get a message that says "Cannot save file, check path.." But I haven't changed the path.

I have reciently started to use windows vista and am now very familiar with all parts of it but there is one problem I wish to find out more about. In windows XP the "My Documents folder was lacated in a very logical place, on vista it is just called "Documents" and is arranged differently. My images and music etc are seperate from Documents folder and are all subfolders in my user profile. My question is: Is this path for Documents folder correct or should it be located in another place: "C:UsersUsers NameSaved GamesDocuments ?

RIght clicking on the shortcut and looking at either Properties/general (which tells me where the "SHORTCUT "is located or Properties /shortcut gives me the line "Target" but just shows the name of the file and not its location. I am downloading a file from a website (Janome - sewing machine related) and it shows on the list of the downloads pop up window -- but I can't find it on my hard drive. How can I locate the file? It's not in the download folder. If I search for the file name nothing comes up (I sure miss the old search process). I need to copy this file and move it to a flash drive -- in order to move it to an older laptop that no longer has Internet access - but runs my embroidery sewing machine. But I can't find the file. If I double click on the downloads pop-up -- it attempts to open the file -- So I am convinced it is there somewhere...

Just bought my son a new PC with Vista HP 32 bit - he installed Warhammer online but it would not run the game - the error message was asking for a DX9 DLL file - downloaded and installed that, the game now runs, BUT will not boot next time he turns it on..... he has to boot at a restore point before the DLL was installed - is there a way round this as its a pain to do this every time he wants to play?

I just downloaded an .exe file fromt the internet and saved it to my harddrive. But I must've done something wrong in the process because when I check the location I saved it to, it shows a shortcut (.lnk) that won't do a thing if I double click on it. Is there a way to change the extension back to .exe so I can run it (it's an install program)? I've already scouted the forums and noticed you can do something with your regs, but I'm afraid that will affect other files on my computer and I'm only having problems with this particular file.

I have had the common problem on not being able to install KB938371 update which is one of the 3 prerequisites to downloading through Microsoft Update the SP1. I have tried all the tricks and suggestion published throughout the web except an in place reinstall of Vista Business. This is highly undesireable since my sony laptop will only reinstall Vista Business as per original with all the software originally shipped which is a pain to remove.
If I download the entire sp1 750mb file, will it install without the prerequsite files? I have read that the prerequisites were actually a compilation of sp1 files and not an actual update to Vista. This being the case, it seems that if the sp1 file were downloaded it would work.

I have three computers networked together via a Linksys Wireless Router. One Dell running XP Pro, and two HP laptops (wireless) one running Vista Ultimate x64 and the other running Vista Home Premium x32. I have all issues resolved (that I've discovered so far anyway) except one. There is a shared external hard drive conneced via USB to the XP, which I have mapped to both Vistas. I can see it when I open 'My Computer' but when I click on it I get an error that says "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have appropriate permissions to view the item." The odd thing about it is that I can access the contents of the drive by right-clicking on it and choosing either 'explore' or 'open.' I can access drives mapped from the Vista(s) to the XP on the XP just fine, just not the other way around.

I have Windows Vista Ultimate. Quite often I try to change or update the names of a folder, and Vista would not let me allow, and I get dialog boxes telling me that I cannot have access, or do not have persmission, etc, and I get these denials even after I closed all the other files. It gets annoying that I get the "NO" after I already typed the new names. I am the only person who have access to this home PC. How can I change this so the computer will let me change names anytime I want to?

I know the title doesn't make sense, here goes. I have Vista Basic and I installed a program named "Sudoku 600" in "C:Program FilesSudoku 600". I let the program generate a puzzle and then save it as "Puzzle 01.sud" in the program's folder. When I look in the folder, the file is not there. I can use the "Command Prompt" and do a 'dir' and it is not there. I can hit "CTRL F" and search for it and it is not there.
When I ask the program to load the file it IS there and it loads fine (no, it isn't in a database or somewhere else - there are other "*.sud" files in the folder that were put there by the program installation and each puzzle is a stand-alone file). I can use a program called "Agent Ransack" to search for it and the file is there and I can click on it within "Agent Ransack" and it opens fine. I have the Sudoku program on a Windows XP machine and the files are saved individually and show up in the folder. Why are they hidden in Vista and not XP?

Can anyone tell me if I can change the templates used to display folders in Vista.
I've searched the forums and discovered plenty of tutorials about the problem of Vista remembering the template used and how to change which template is used.
But that is not what I want. I actually want to change the template itself (In an ideal world I'd like to create new templates), but at the minimum I'd like to change what the existing templates show.
For example, I have a number of Sound FX files and for those, I'd like the template to show the length of the clip. Similarly, I do not use Ratings, and have no use for them or Genres or track numbers, but I would like file size. For Images, I again never use Ratings, or tags (I use Adobe Lightroom to catalog my images as I have thousands) but I would like to see file type and modification date!

I accidentally changed my user folder shortcut name in Windows Explorer under Desktop.
It was changed when I tried to save a file to the desktop and accidentally create new folder while highlight the user folder shortcut. It might be a bug in the system, since I can’t duplicate the change again.
I have tried to rename it but nothing happens.
I deleted it but it came back after refresh (F5).
There is no property available since this is a special folder or shortcut like network shortcut in Windows Explorer.
I briefly went through the registry and search for ‘shell’ related value but find none to resolve the issue. Did the search on Google and this forum, I have found nothing related to this problem. Maybe I use the wrong word for the search. Does anybody know how to reverse the change or edit in the registry?

I would like to set some key folders to have icons that identify what is inside. So my Windows install folder would show a folder with the Windows logo in front. (I have the ICO for that.) But how do you do that? I found a folder that has such a specific icon, but I wasn't successful getting it to work. My example used an icon inside an EXE. My icon is a stand-alone ICO.

How much hard disk space do I need to burn a disc?
If you're using the Live File System format, you don't need to allocate any additional space to burn your disc, since each file is written to the disc as you go.
If you are creating a Mastered disc, however, Windows needs to create a complete "image" of the disc before it is burned. This disc image can be as large as the maximum capacity of the disc you are creating—you might need 650 megabytes (MB) on your hard disk to create a CD-R, or 4.7 gigabytes (GB) to create a DVD-R.
Can I choose where the disc image is stored?
Yes, if you have more than one hard disk installed in your computer, you can specify which disk is used to create your disc image. Here's how:
1. Open Computer by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Computer.
2. Right-click the drive that is your disc burner, and then click Properties.
3. Click the Recording tab, and then click your desired drive from the drive menu. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
