Open File - Security Warning On .exe Files

Mar 23, 2008

I get this annoying warning when I open and .exe file. The warning gives me the option to deselect the 'always ask when opeing this file', but it reappears the next time I open the file and the warning is reselected even though I already deselected it. The warning has a help link on the bottom ' how can I decide what software to run' and all the help links talk about is downloading which has nothing to do with this warning dialog box. How do I get rid of this annoying security warning on this file. If I go to properties for the file, there is an unblock option which I select and apply, but it too reappears the next time I open the file properties.

How To Disable Open File - Security Warning Dialog Box In Windows?

May 24, 2008

Every time I want to open a .url file using the customized Links menu on the deskbar (channel bar), I get a dialog box with a security warning message "Do you want to open this file?" How do I disable this security warning dialog box from popping up? I am confident my Avast! virus definitions will detect and intercept any virus or spyware attached to any url before the file is opened, so I really don't need this feature, it is annoying.

Hyperlink: "File Download Security Warning"

Jul 29, 2009

In the last few days, when I have clicked on certain links, a Window opens headed "File Download Security Warning". It says underneath: "Do you want to save this file or find a program online to open it?" The name of the file is stated, and is said to be of the type "Unknown Filetype".

Below that there are buttons offering "Find", "Save" and not surprisingly "Cancel". If you click on "Find" a Window opens headed "Windows File Association" This says the file is "MIME Type: Application/x-gzip-compressed." None of this is normal, so I used System Restore to go back three days. This seems to have cured most of the errant links, but not all. The problem remains. When you click on a link, you should go to that link, right?

Windoes Security Conflict Warning

Mar 23, 2008

When my PC was delivered, and evaluation copy of McAfee Command Centre was pre installed. As I prefer to use my own antivrus product as well as Windows own firewall, I uninstalled McAfee. Although it didn't fully install, I removed the files left behind with the removal tool provided by McAfee. I installed my own antivirus product, aVast, and activated Windows firewall. If I look in Security Centre, the is a conflict warning saying that I have two firewalls activated. For some reason, McAfee is still shown as being present as both a firewall and antivirus protection. I don't know how this can be because McAfee is no longer on my computer. Furthermore I cannot find any way to remove the reference to McAfee.

Windows Security Warning Dialogs

Jul 7, 2009

This is a problem on a Windows Server, but this sort of thing is more of a general Windows problem.... so, onwards...One of our servers recently died and required restoring from backup, which went almost perfectly. The sole exception is that the server is now using Webdings/Wingdings for IE download dialogs and Windows security warning dialogs. And I have not the slightest idea why it's doing this. I've hit the search engines and help sites and haven't found anything, and the WindowsFonts folder is perfectly intact as far as I can tell.

Suppressing Mail Server Security Certifcate Warning

Jul 2, 2008

I am experiencing is related to the lack of a security certificate for an email server from which I am receiving mail with Windows Live Mail. I want to know if there is a way I can suppress the warning message I receive from Windows Live Mail every time I start the application, or I can otherwise tell the program that this is a trusted server even though there is no certificate. Since I can simply dismiss the warning each time and receive mail I am looking for an automated way, short of requiring this server to install a certificate, to indicate to Windows Live Mail that this is a trusted server.

Open With - Files Associations - Changed Default Browser, The .html And .htm File Associations Had Been Set To "unknown"

Mar 23, 2008

Having changed my default browser, the .html and .htm file associations had been set to "unknown". Don't ask me why. Trying to set them via the usual mechanisms: "open with" or "file associations" menus does not work because they are populated only with MS programs. All attempts to select other programs via "browse" option fail. I can select the program but it is simply ignored and no change to the file associations happens. Nor is the selected program added to the list of programs available for selection. As there is no option provided for typing in the full path, as used to be the case with earlier and better operating systems, and the "browse" option does not work, I am totally stuck.

Is this a new MS policy to prevent users from running non-MS programs?? Whatever it is, it is very frustrating and affects all programs and extensions, not just the .html of the above example. Another very annoying thing is that even when I manage to run some non-MS programs manually, they will only work if run in "admin mode", as they are prevented from writing to disk. Are users not supposed to be allowed to write to our own disks anymore????

File Open & File Save Dialog Box Hangs

May 15, 2010

Whenever I request a "File|Open" or "File|Save" from any application, the mini-Windows-Explorer dialog box that opens freezes and hangs the entire application. Happens with almost all applications. Not limited to just Microsoft programs. It does not matter if I like change the download folder or if I rt click always the same.

Back when it was under warranty Hp tells me to just restore to original settings. I hate to do that. But I am about to see that this might be the only fix for it. (But I am hoping not.) I think it started a long time ago when I was changing the USB ports I used for my external Hard drive and it changed drive letter. (maybe maybe not.. just seems I remember that being something that had happened when I first recall things hanging...) anyway I have all drives in the place I want them now and this issue still happens even if I dont have that external drive plugged in.

Security/Administrator Won't Allow Trans File

Dec 1, 2007

I bought this new computer with Vista (expensive too!) and now I can't do the thing I love best with my computer. I play Sims 1 and I use PSP 7 to recolor and recreate objects and I have a program that transfers the objects from the Sims game to my PSP 7 program called Transmogrifier. The way it works is that when you are finished working on you iff object in PSP 7 you transfer it back to the Sims game via this Transmog program. The object is coming back to the Transmog but not appearing the game. There is a folder in the download section of the Sims game called "transmogrified" and the objects are supposed to go directly into it when I import the object. It's not happening. The only thing I can figure is it must be the administrator/security issue that won't allow the Transmog to put a file into the Sims folder. How can I get around it? The computer will collect dust if I can't contiinue with my hobby.

Exe Files Open As Text Files

Sep 26, 2009

I have encountered a very strange problem. I have downloaded two exe files recently. When I doubleclick on the exe file, instead of the application installing, what should happen but Word of all things opens with, in the case of one of them a box headed 'File Conversion - arw5setup.msi', and a similar wording in the second, asking me to select the encoding that makes my document readable. Whatever I select, the exe file then opens as a text file.

(The reference to an msi file is baffling as both files were exe files.) When it happened the first time I thought it was a corrupt file, but when it happened again it has to be that there is something wrong with my system. Is this a virus? Spybot has just come up with a clean slate ...
